Hello New England PGA Members,
Once again, welcome to a crazy Spring in New England. As I write this, Hatherly looks like it’s going to wash out to sea and New Hampshire and the Northern States are getting walloped by a major snowstorm.
While looking out my office window at the extreme rainfall which has formed streams and lakes of standing water (that wouldn't normally be there) running through the course, it still amazes me how many calls we get inquiring about the use of golf carts Only true PGA of America Golf Professionals and trained Associates can handle these calls and not make our members feel bad about asking them.
The season, with its full volume of daily play, tournaments and other events, will be on us before we know it and we will wish for quiet days like we are enjoying now. Best of luck to you all in the start of your 2024 golf season.
I wanted to provide you with a status report on what the NEPGA Officers, Board and Staff have been doing this Winter and Spring.
In January, The Officers (me, Joanne and Brendan) all met with Mike Higgins and Larry Kelly at the PGA Show in Orlando to interview the talented crew of PGA Members running for PGA of America National Secretary. We sat down and talked with Barry Howard, Arkansas, Derek Gutierrez, New Mexico, Eric Eshleman, Alabama and Jared Barnes, Utah. All the candidates were very passionate, professional and quite prepared to take on any questions we threw at them The topics ranged from their individual ideas of focusing on the PGA member, balancing the budget and the uncertainty of professional golf with LIV and how this affects our association.
Shortly after, at the end of February, the Officers, Mike and Larry were fortunate to meet again with the candidates during the Super Regionals in Houston. This setting was more formal, and the candidates had more time to express their ideas and mission to elevate the PGA of America. Overall, a truly great experience that provided our group with a chance to get to know these talented individuals and their ideas even better
I had the opportunity to jump on The Empower Hour featuring Nathan Charnes, PGA of America Secretary, Mike Higgins and Larry Kelly I really enjoy the Empower Hours; they are fast, convenient and informative (they need to be with our schedules) The NEPGA duo presented Nathan with some great questions ranging from the new logo, national compensation increases and our association’s plan moving forward especially with the Ryder Cup, the PGA Championship, LIV and the uncertainty of professional golf Our secretary did not disappoint I, for one, was not a big fan of the logo change The objective to separate or differentiate the PGA of America from the PGA Tour did not resonate with me initially but seeing the turmoil the PGA Tour is going through with their never-ending battle with LIV, I believe, now, this was a very tactical, forward-thinking decision. The logo change and adoption of a new slogan: “We Love this Game” are initiatives of a national campaign to educate the world on who we are and elevate the role of our 30,000 PGA of America golf professionals as major influencers in the game of golf.
The game of golf is in a very good place. Rounds are up and club’s memberships are full. For the first time since 2007, we have more associates getting into the PGA of America than getting out We currently have 200 associates in the New England PGA Coupled with 30,000 members nationally, we are in a very different place than we were a few years ago.
Also, a very big thank you to our career consultant's tireless work in increasing our average national compensation oh head professionals to exceed $100,000. Our own, David Wilson, has made such an impact on compensation and the quality of life of our NEPGA professionals. David, thank you.
Jeff Martin, Tournament Chair and and his dedicated committee have been working tirelessly and have created such a great tournament program with some new events that hopefully, will fit in with your schedules. Cape Week, October 15-17 will run concurrently with Rhode Island Week This addition of three RI prestigious venues will create additional playing opportunities for this extremely popular end of season pro-ams. Also, new to our schedule is the Miacomet Island Pro Am. This will be an elevated event with discounted hotel pricing, enhanced food options and a couple of other surprises.
Jim Remy, NEPGA Senior Director and Commissioner of the Senior’s Association has put together a Pro-Pro Series of 4-5 events focusing on comradery, fun and enjoyment of the game. Also on the Senior front, there will be a forward tee option this year (65+ years of age) for our NEPGA Senior’s Championship. This would be a separate division.
New this year, NEPGA Senior professionals (65+ years of age) may move one tee forward for all section pro ams.
And just when you thought the golf season was over, Woodland Golf Club, Boston will be hosting a Pro-Pro on October 21 The Avidia Stroke Play Series schedule is complete with the finals to be held at Pine Brook Country Club, Weston, Ma. on September 30.
I can’t possibly end my thoughts without bringing mention to our NEPGA Spring Meeting Honestly, in all the meetings I’ve attended, I have never felt so much energy and engagement from our members. Special thanks to Kraig Kann who gave an awesome, thought-provoking presentation providing our attendees with skills to stand out and build your own brand. “What separates you from everyone else” is the question you need to ask yourself.
As mentioned during this meeting, the NEPGA’s focus of our North Stars is you, the member. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if I may be of assistance to you or even if you just want to chat about the magic move you're working on with your swing, I welcome your call

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be named Golf Professional of the Year. I am as delighted as I am honored - and I am truly honored.
You don’t start a career in golf with the goal of winning an award… so I find myself truly speechless.

The New England PGA is excited to announce the 2024 Section Award Winners
The 2024 Awards are headlined by Glenn Kelly, PGA (Woods Hole Golf Club) who has been named the NEPGA Golf Professional of the Year.
Kelly is the Head Golf Professional at Woods Hole Golf Club, a position that he has held since 1986. He joined the Golf Industry as an Assistant to Andy Froude, PGA at Charles River CC in 1981. Along the way, Kelly worked for Les Kennedy at Pawtucket CC in 1982, Don Ross from 19831984 at Glastonbury Hills CC, and then moved to Woods Hole GC in 1985 as an assistant to Herman “Dutch” Wessner
“I am as delighted as I am honored – and I am truly honored,” said Kelly “You don’t start a career in golf with the goal of winning an award as prestigious as this one It’s for notable people who have accomplished so much throughout their careers… so I find myself truly speechless ”
Kelly attained his PGA of America Professional Membership in 1988 and has excelled in many areas, specifically Golf
Shop Operations and Tournament Operations.
Over the years Kelly has served the Section on the Junior Golf Committee, Awards Committee, and Finance Committee. He also served as the Cape Cod Chapter Tournament Chair in 1987 as well as the Chapter District Director from 2011-2014 and 2015-2018.
“I try to lead by example,” said Kelly. “I urge my fellow Professionals to give it a try when you are called to service. You will look back as I do with pride and you will serve as an example for the next generation.”
retirement I can do more of that.”
Kelly participated in 18 Golf Fights Cancer Marathons, raising close to $250,000. He has also participated in two Francis Ouimet Golf Marathons and hosted the Eastern Amputee Golf Association for the past 38 years.
Kelly’s peers say he is the definition of what a PGA Professional should be. He is a student of the game, a mentor to his staff, and a valuable employee to his club
Kelly was awarded the New England PGA Cape Cod Chapter Golf Professional of the Year Award in 2009 and 2022. In 2023 he earned the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund Professional of the Year Award.
Kelly has been active in the growth of the game of golf over the years. He attributes his success in the growth of the game to the professional staff at Woods Hole GC
“Whenever possible, I try to volunteer my time giving lessons to junior golfers, free of charge,” said Kelly. “I hope as I near
“I want to thank the Board of Governors and the Membership at Woods Hole Golf Club for their support over the past 39 years. I am so fortunate to work at the most wonderful facility in New England with the kindest, most generous group of people. I want to thank all of my coworkers, both past and present, and numerous mentors,” Kelly concluded.
Kelly is one of 13 individuals to earn recognition of their service and dedication to their profession as the NEPGA announced its full slate of 2024 award winners.

Everyone’s puzzle is constructed differently, how will you solve your puzzle?
Club’s have a series of teams behind the scenes that deliver the best possible experience to members and their guests every minute of each day. All teams are made of unique individuals completing interdependent tasks to work toward accomplishing a common mission or specific objective. The rate of change within the club industry over the last ten, even five years, has been a lot to wrap ourselves around and that change will only increase as time moves forward Teams are constructed like a puzzle Trying to use a puzzle piece that works at the club across town may not work for you and that piece that once fit at your facility may not fit as it once did either.
As a Career Consultant with the PGA of America, I work closely with PGA of America Members as well as Facilities trying to best understand everyone’s specific needs and goals Everyone that we work with has a story unique to themselves and has experienced the last five years very differently. The individuals and facilities who have continued to excel and achieve are those who lean in to this idea of change and welcome the excitement while focusing on the people who have made it possible
As Rory Sutherland of the advertising and marketing firm of Ogilvy once said, “All too often what matters to people is not whether an idea is true or effective, but whether it fits with the preconceptions of a dominant convention or incumbent. New things put ego, status, jobs and identities at stake.” The way in which Sutherland talks about innovation and how people process change is summed up by a phrase we have all heard before, that is not how we do things here. Innovation disrupts because it is different and by definition it should look weird, feel unconventional, should be misunderstood and should sound wrong.
Let’s highlight a few staffing innovations that challenge how individuals view the club world and look at best practices and data points that can help you fight off cognitive dissonance and embrace the next wave of change as you work to solve your puzzle
Quantifying the level of service at a facility can be subjective to say the least. This becomes even more challenging when looking at one facility compared to another without truly knowing the activity level or resources within the golf program. We like to use a metric called Dollars per Round. We advise facilities to evaluate their dollars per round internally by evaluating how that number has changed from 2018 to today. With the increased usage at clubs it is important to make sure that those levels are appropriate at your facility before comparing to others
(Total Golf Staff Payroll - Golf Department Lead)/Rounds of Golf
Golf Department Lead, typically the Director of Golf or Head
Professional is removed from the equation due to various compensation structures paired with the fact that they should be in a supervisory position in the operation
Data from Club Benchmarking shows that this number has increased across the board with the median increasing by 13% while the top 25th percentile has increased dollars per round by 21%. Over this same period reports from the National Golf Foundation show that rounds of golf increased by 22%.
Schedule:
The PGA of America has a team of recruitment specialists who are in the field creating awareness and sharing career opportunities within the Golf Industry These individuals are able to have conversations with individuals looking to make golf their career. Common themes they hear in the conversations are flexible work weeks, weekends off and flex pay for shifts that are harder to fill. To that end we have heard of facilities adopting this and changing the ‘traditional’ schedule to accommodate more flexibility and time away from the facility in the form of 4 full day shifts or one weekend off per month.
Technology:
From AI to Range Picker Robots technology is only increasing to change how we experience the club. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs in sports and entertainment are expected to far outpace the average in every other industry through 2032. Making tee times might get easier and picking the range may look different but working with a PGA of America Professional on your game will remain a critically important piece of the experience at your facility. Embrace technology in a way to enhance an experience, not replace it

“We are very excited to have Tim join our team. His experience and knowledge will help our tournament operations tremendously as we continue to elevate offerings for our PGA of America Professionals,” said Executive Director, Michael Higgins

With lodging at the famous Carolina Hotel and the premier line-up of courses, including an additional round at The Cradle short course, our Professionals and Amateurs were provided the full experience and it did not disappoint.
Congratulations to Matt Lombard, PGA and his team from North Andover Country Club who took home first place. They took home the title by a 12-stroke margin to Ed Kirby, PGA and his team from The Aquidneck Club.
The 2024 Pro-Am featured the Donald Ross masterpiece, and centerpiece of Pinehurst Resort, No. 2 course. The tournament also featured course No. 4, a Gil Hanse’s innovative design which offered dramatic vistas and a stunning test to golf. Home to a course that continues to carve out a reputation of it’s own, designed by George Fazio, No. 6 was also a highlight of the week Lastly, No 8 offered a private club experience which combines a classic Donald Ross concept with the whimsical snarls that have become Fazio’s calling card. Augusta National Golf Club is widely known for its well-maintained fairways, tall magnolia trees, luscious azalea bushes and the infamous green jacket. But on Sunday, April 7th, 2024 - the eve of the 88th Masters Tournament - all focus was shifted to 80 junior golfers from around the country, competing in the 10th annual Drive, Chip, and Putt National Finals.
Amongst the hundreds of volunteers, Augusta National staff members, and PGA of America Golf Professionals that came together to execute the National Finals, they welcomed 41 staff members from every Section of the PGA of America across the country to assist in the operation. Chad Eades, Foundation Program Manager for the New England PGA Foundation, represented the NEPGA during this memorable weekend As he expected, Eades’ first experience on the grounds of Augusta National would be one to remember.
“I was extremely honored to represent the New England PGA and play a pivotal role in running the Drive Chip and Putt National Finals”, said Eades. While he was excited to represent New England at this historic event, he wasn’t the only New Englander on property on Sunday. Four of the National Finalists that had qualified at the Drive Chip and Putt Regional Finals at TPC Boston and their families were from the New England Section. Aarya Tsarong (Newton, MA), Callen Cronin (Haverhill, MA), Jackson Jodoin (Bedford, NH) and Champa Visetsin (Sudbury, MA) were amongst the 80 talented juniors competing for a National Champion title in their respective age division.
“Being able to be a part of this special weekend was one thing, but being able to share this experience with the four New England competitors and their families is something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life”.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE 2024
OCTOBER 19, 2024
The 2024-2025 PGA of America annual dues invoices will be available in early May, and the deadline to pay is June 30, 2024. Members and Associates should be prepared to pay by ACH, logging into their financial institution via the dues billing interface or having their routing number and checking account number available, avoiding the convenience fee. If a Member or Associate requires a more convenient payment option, credit and debit card payment options will be available with a 3% convenience fee.
Membership credentials will be sent when the payment clears. With ACH transactions, payments normally clear in three to five days.
The ACH dues payment process is a completely separate process from ACH expense reimbursement, tournament winnings, payouts, honorariums, etc.
Dues billing will take place in Member 360, meaning dues balances will not appear in SMS/CCMS
The Member/Associate bands in SMS/CCMS have already been extended to a June 30, 2025, expiration date. For those who ultimately do not pay the 2024/2025 dues, their band will be retroactively expired as of June 30, 2024. This process will not take place until early August, 2024. The PGA of America Membership Team will be available to help you navigate all of this.
The Northeast Region PGA of America Sections, also known as District 1, inclusive of the PGA of America Connecticut Section, New England Section, and Northeastern New York Section are coming together to provide and share educational opportunities for PGA of America Professionals across the region.
