Support for Additional Needs
At Nescot we offer a wide range of support for students with additional needs and disabilities. We will work with you to support you, make reasonable adjustments, and help find practical solutions to any difficulties you may have.
The Learning Support Team supports students with and without and Education Health and Care plan (EHCp) with:
• Specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyspraxia
• Moderate learning difficulties
• Physical or mobility needs or sensory impairments
• Social, emotional or behavioral difficulties
• Exam access arrangements.
If you hold an EHCp, please inform your Local Authority that you wish to apply to Nescot. They will ask the college to complete a Needs Assessment to ensure your needs can be met.
A discussion may also need to be had on the provision Nescot can and cannot provide. This takes place before 31st March of the year you wish to enroll. It is important to let us know you hold an EHCp when you apply. Nescot is able to provide in class support, this is rarely 1-1.
Students have access to Assistive Technologies such as Read & Write Gold, specialist textto-speech software; Inspiration, mind mapping software; and Google classroom.
Nescot does not provide Speech and Language, Occupational, Drama or Art therapies. If you continue to require this support through your EHCp, Nescot will work alongside you and the therapist provided by your Local Authority.
Nescot also works with external, specialist agencies to support students with a hearing or visual impairment in line with the EHCp.
Exam access arrangements are assessed by Specialist Support Tutors in line with the Joint Council of Qualifications regulations.

Learning Support Mentors
Students who hold an EHCp have regular access to a Learning Support Mentor.
These staff work within the Learning Support Department and provide support to EHCp holders with social interactions, emotional and welfare difficulties.
Staff will work with you to try to enable you to overcome or manage your anxieties so you can access your studies. This may involve liaising with the welfare and safeguarding teams or providing information on external support agencies.
Personal Development Coaches
Students who do not hold and EHCp but require additional guidance and support can access this through Personal Development Coaches assigned to each curriculum area.
These members of staff support the wellbeing of learners within their curriculum area, deliver tutorials and liaise between tutors, parents, carers and students.
Welfare staff in N20 advise students on any safeguarding and wellbeing issues.
As well as taking a proactive approach to wellbeing, organising activities and awareness sessions, they will respond to safeguarding issues and signpost students to further internal or external support on any wellbeing matters.
