FOUNDATION LEARNING OUR DEPARTMENT

OUR FACILITIES

Nescot’s Foundation Learning department offers a wide range of qualifications aimed at supporting students to achieve their full potential. Some of our programmes are aimed at students with learning difficulties and disabilities, and others have been developed for young people who left school with few or no formal qualifications.

We have invested substantially in our environment over the last few years. Foundation Learning students have their own dedicated area within the main college. This means they can transition at their own pace from a quieter area with specialist support to using communal parts of the campus, such as the canteen and library.

OUR STAFF We have a dedicated team of teachers, who are experienced in working with young people who have learning difficulties or disabilities. You can also expect: • Learning Support Assistants in every lesson • Student Mentors to support social difficulties • College Counsellors to provide emotional support • A college nurse to help with medical needs.

FOUNDATION LEARNING LEARNING PATHWAYS

ENGLISH AND MATHS

Our focus is to prepare students for a life after college and improve their life chances and choices. We have developed a curriculum to give students a clear pathway through the department to further education, employment or supported living. Students will be assessed to ensure they join their chosen pathway at the right level and are able to progress.

Students on all pathways will study English and maths at an appropriate level until they reach Level 2 or GCSE Grade 4-9. It is important that students provide evidence of prior achievement as part of their initial assessment. Stepping Stone qualifications are available for students who are assessed as needing more than one year to develop the skills required to achieve a complete level.

FOUNDATION LEARNING

14-16 PROGRESSION PATHWAY From September 2019, we are launching a new programme for young people aged 14 to 16 who have Special Educational Needs. Young people will be referred by their school or local authority, and a bespoke curriculum with Personalised Learning Plans will be developed for and with each education partner. The programme will include English and maths and a selection of vocational awards and certificates to meet young people’s aspirations and to enable them to progress within the college.

nescot.ac.uk

In consultation with each education partner, students will be timetabled for four hours a day five days of the week and across 35 weeks of the year into the summer term. New students will be welcomed at the start of each term if they are at risk of becoming NEET and existing students are given the opportunity to change vocational programme in year. Students will need to be referred by their school or local authority, and will be invited for an interview to discuss their place. An additional Needs Assessment will take place for students with an Education, Health and Care Plan.

FOUNDATION LEARNING FOUNDATION E1 N5434 This qualification is aimed at students who are transitioning into college from a specialist learning environment and require high levels of support. Students will have the opportunity to experience a range of vocational tasters, while identifying employability skills and improving independence as well as encouraging physical fitness, wellbeing and creative expression.

SUPPORTED LIVING PATHWAY E2 N5528 AND E3 N5529 This pathway is for students who need support to develop life skills to help them become more independent. The majority of the sessions are practical so students are able to experience and develop skills in personal care, household skills, communication, travelling independently, accessing external services and becoming a valued member of the community.

The Futures Programme is focused on identifying the appropriate support within four key areas:

THE SUNNYBANK FUTURES PROGRAMME The Sunnybank Futures Programme aims to support young adults with learning disabilities at the point of transition from Nescot or other FE colleges.

6

• Employment • Being safe and healthy • Living independently • Having fun and friends Students transitioning from the supported living pathways, or in certain circumstances considered eligible, will be invited to apply for a place on this programme.

FURTHER EDUCATION PATHWAY This pathway has been designed for students who are planning to go on to Further Education. Students take part in sessions on personal development whilst experiencing vocational tasters. The aim is to build confidence and independence as well as helping students to decide which vocational pathway would suit them best. E2 N5527 - Students develop their personal and social skills through the completion of a number of units including Planning for Progression, Effective Communication, Introduction to ICT and Working as Part of a Team. Students also take part in vocational tasters within the Foundation Learning Department in areas such as Construction, Animal Care, Catering and Horticulture.

E3 N5416 – Still within the Foundation Learning Department, through the completion of units in Administration, Animal Care, Building and Construction, Crafts, Creative Arts & Design, Horticulture, ICT, Performing Arts, Retail and Commercial Exercises, Sport Leisure and Recreation and Transport Operation and Maintenance, students continue to develop their vocational skills. L1 N5530 – At Level 1, as transition to Further Education, students spend one day per week in the main college completing units with vocational staff. Students switch vocational area every half term and experience what it is like to study in a variety of curriculum areas: Art & Design, Media & Music Technology, Performing Arts, Construction, Motor Vehicle, Animal Care, Catering, Sport and Computing.

FOUNDATION LEARNING

EMPLOYMENT PATHWAY This pathway is designed to give students the competencies they need for employment. Students initially develop skills to help them find employment, such as CV writing and performing well at interview, until a work experience place is obtained. Throughout the year, whilst at college, students improve their employability skills to support their work placement. Units studied include: Conduct at Work, Personal Presentation and Hygiene, Working as Part of a Team, Creating a Good Impression on Customers and Environmental Awareness. There are work experience opportunities at each level as follows:

8

E2 N5477 - As a group, students take part in a fully-supported work experience placement over two half days at a local National Trust Property. Students work in the cafÊ, shop and in the grounds, developing skills and growing in confidence. E3 N5485 - Students spend the first 6-8 weeks studying units to help them identify, apply for and achieve a work placement. From October half term, students attend work experience independently for 1 day per week with visits from their class tutor to support and assess their progress. L1 N5449 – Students will be supported to develop their work placement from the previous year or identify a new one. Once established, students attend work experience independently for 2 days per week with visits from their class tutor to support and assess their progress.

FOUNDATION LEARNING SUPPORTED INTERNSHIP This study programme is aimed at young people who have travelled along our employment pathway, have a statement of Special Educational Needs or an Education, Health and Care Plan, and continue to need support to move into employment. Interns are placed with a host employer for up to four days per week, preparing them for sustainable paid employment by further developing the personal and professional skills needed for working life.

nescot.ac.uk

Internships are unpaid and last for the full academic year and wherever possible the intern graduates into paid employment at the end of programme. Students are supported by Job Coaches in the workplace. Alongside the work placement, the interns follow a personalised study programme, which includes the chance to study for relevant qualifications, if appropriate, as well as English and maths.

FOUNDATION LEARNING

ACHIEVE N7013 This is a full-time introductory programme for young people who left school without formal qualifications but who want to go on to study a Level 1 course. Students study the Prince’s Trust qualifications in Personal Development and Employability Skills, which recognise the personal skills, qualities and attitudes needed to progress onto education and needed by employers across a range of sectors.

To help transition into Further Education, students spend one day per week in the main college completing units with vocational staff. Students switch vocational area every half term and experience what it is like to study in a variety of curriculum areas: Art & Design, Media & Music Technology, Performing Arts, Construction, Motor Vehicle, Animal Care, Catering, Sport and Computing.

Students can join the course in September, January or at Easter, and the qualifications are offered as an Award, Certificate and Diploma. Students develop English and maths skills through a range of stepping stone qualifications, with a GCSE re-sit option for students with a Grade 3 who start in September.

Nicola did a work experience placement at the Sunnybank Trust as part of her course. She impressed so much that they were keen to offer her a longer-term role, so Nescot staff helped to arrange a Supported Internship. Nicola was nominated for a Student of the Term award in spring because of her positive attitude. Her sense of humour, maturity and determination always shine through, and staff in the department have learnt a lot from her.

NICOLA Supported Internship

I am studying Horticulture and Catering on my course. We’ve been learning about plants and how they grow, and now we’re planting seeds to see what happens. On Fridays we prepare food like salads and jacket potatoes and then we go to a church and do a café. We put out the chairs and tables and the cutlery and we lay the tables, and then we put our aprons on and start serving the food. I like doing the café because the people are nice.

ALEX Building Blocks

When I started at Nescot I didn’t have many qualifications, but doing Achieve means I can move to Level 1 Catering next year. I’m really looking forward to it, and my goal is to work in restaurants one day. I’m enjoying Achieve because I like learning new things. I’m also doing maths and English, which I will need in the future. The teachers are really good and they help us learn things like how to apply for jobs, and how to eat healthily. I work in the student kitchens twice a week, where I help the staff to prepare the ingredients for students in the Foundation Learning Seasons Café to cook.
