WHAT IS AN HOW WE CAN APPRENTICESHIP? HELP YOU An apprenticeship is a way of combining training and employment. Apprentices do a ‘real’ job, and spend 20% of their time working towards a recognised qualification. Most of the cost is met by the government, and in some cases the employer pays a contribution. Apprenticeships aren’t only for new staff – you can also help your existing employees to upskill.
We offer our employers a bespoke service. We listen to what your business needs are and then develop a solution that works for you – whether that’s setting up a new qualification for your current staff, helping you to recruit new staff, or advising you on our other qualifications. You will always have a dedicated Account Manager to support you throughout the process.
HOW DO APPRENTICESHIPS SUPPORT YOUR BUSINESS?
A Q&A with Ajay Syal, Managing Director at Broadplace Advertising.
Q. How many apprentices do you currently have?
A. We currently have three apprentices working for us – two in the Broadplace agency team and one working specifically on our start-up app, CampaignHero.
Q. What do your apprentices do in a typical week? A. The average week can really vary for our apprentices. It can involve anything from assisting with winning new clients, working on current clients, supporting teams leads, to developing content for our own sites. So there isn’t a standard week and it really gives them a good grounding in digital marketing.
Q. Why did you decide to hire apprentices?
WHY HIRE AN APPRENTICE?
Apprenticeships are a way of developing a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce. Employers also tell us that hiring apprentices improves productivity, and that investing in existing staff through an apprenticeship boosts morale and reduces staff turnover. Investing in apprenticeships is also costeffective, with government initiatives including a £1,000 incentive that companies employing a new apprentice aged 16 to 18 may be eligible for. Apprenticeships can also help you to: • Grow your team while keeping costs down • Make hiring cheaper and simpler • Develop new recruits to meet your needs • Help your existing staff to gain new qualifications To find out more, contact The Business Centre on 020 8394 8593 or email businesscentre@nescot.ac.uk
A. We are a diverse company and hire people from a variety of backgrounds but there’s something really beneficial that comes from underpinning workplace learning with college training. Employing apprentices also helps with our staff retention as we make a dual commitment for the duration of the employee’s studies. The majority of our apprentices tend to stay with the agency for many years beyond their course completion and we often see them move quickly through the ranks to management positions.
Q. How do they benefit the business?
A. We like to think that our apprentices boost the appeal for working in the digital marketing sector. At Broadplace, we have a really good culture and although our work is largely computer-based, there’s also a huge social element. As a Google Premier Partner, Facebook Partner and Microsoft Advertising Elite Channel Partner, our staff often visit their head offices for training and networking events. Our apprentices are a great advert for companies like us who invest heavily in staff training.
Q. Why did you choose Nescot as your apprenticeship provider?
A. Anyone who has visited Nescot will be able to tell you how modern the facilities are. Our apprentices love having access to up-to-date creative software from major brands such as: Adobe, Apple and Microsoft. We also love the fact that our apprentices have tutors with industry experience. Our apprentices often encourage us to re-think whether we are using the right programmes in our own business and they really help us improve our approach.
Q. What advice would you give another company thinking about taking on apprentices?
A. We would advise anyone who is thinking of taking on an apprentice to really think about their learning and development processes. It’s important to think about whether you have the right processes in place to make sure that you can take someone who has a very basic knowledge of marketing and help them grow within the company. In addition to this, you really need to make sure the apprentice will have a dedicated mentor.

THE APPRENTICESHIP LEVY: USE IT OR LOSE IT
Businesses that have an annual payroll bill of £3 million of more automatically pay a levy of 0.5% of their pay bill into their Digital Apprenticeship Service account, to be used towards training and assessing apprentices. However, funds expire after 24 months, with money that hasn’t been used being clawed back on a month-by-month basis. If you’re not sure how to use your levy pot, our Business Centre team will be happy to help.
WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENTS
Work experience placements are a great way for businesses to access a new generation of talent, with new ideas and a fresh perspective. Placements also give young people the opportunity to find out more about the industry they want to work in, and to help them to understand the skills, qualifications and experience they will need. To find out more contact the Work Experience team by emailing wex@nescot.ac.uk
