Saturday Academies Starting 8 June
Are you 13-16 years of age? Our Saturday Academies for 13 to 16 year-olds are fun and practical courses. They run for four consecutive weeks and lead up to a final project. You’ll be taught by our expert staff using the latest technologies and resources and you’ll be producing work that you can take away with you. As well as being enjoyable, you will learn new skills that will help towards your education or career choices.

Our current Academies are listed below: Creative Computing Academy Start date – 8 June 2019
Enjoy playing Fortnite? At Nescot you can take that interest and turn it into a skill set that will prepare you for a career in IT. This academy is created for young people who want to try out programming and is a fun way to learn computing in a social setting. Students are taught to code using software like Python, After Effects and Gamemaker. We use a series of computer game projects, which help students learn the core concepts of software development and coding. Course Description Learn to apply logical thinking to solve problems. Create your own websites and computer games. Meet others who are learning to program. Week 1: Visual Effects, Introduction to the camera, physical shooting, green screen removal and motion tracking. Week 2: Coding, introduction to Python, operators and statements, making text-based games. Week 3: Game Making, introduction to Gamemaker engine, creating objects, creating tilesets, scripting. Week 4: Web Design, introduction to HTML, using mark-up languages, generating webpages, styling content with CSS. Creative Computing Academy
Media Make-Up Academy Start date – 8 June 2019
Our media make-up academy shows you how to create casualty make-up effects, so it’s not for the faint hearted! Learn, apply and create realistic make-up effects like those seen on TV shows such as Casualty and Holby City. Course Description The film, television and theatre industry is a huge employer in the UK and worldwide. Nescot has full-time courses that help our students progress into the specialist jobs that exist in this field. Hence we Media Make-Up Academy have experienced staff and great facilities that we’ll be utilising for our Saturday Academy course for younger people. Our staff will teach you new skills in special effects and stage make-up. You’ll learn how to create bruises, blood, cuts, scratches, scars, knife wounds and finger amputation. Each week you will learn a new technique then you’ll bring it all together in the final week to create your own casualty victim. Circus Skills and Clowning Start date – 8 June 2019
Come and unleash your inner clown. Spend four sessions exploring what it takes to find the funny within and love doing it. Circus and clown activities explored during the academy include performing, acting, object manipulation and physical skills. These include juggling scarves and balls, spinning plates, diablo, hula hoops, acrobatics, acro-balance, partnering and slap-stick comedy. Circus Skills and Clowning
eSports Academy
Start date – 8 June 2019 E sports –‘Play with a passion, Learn with a purpose.’ TRAIN2GAME@Nescot in collaboration with NEXT Gen are offering you the opportunity to attend our E Sports Saturday Academy. Course Description Over the course of 4 weeks, you will work in teams playing games such as Overwatch and League of Legends. You’ll be developing skills in sportsmanship and communication as well strategic and competitive gaming. The course will be held in our state-of-the-art eSports Academy Games Hub equipped with the latest gaming software and hardware as well as a screening room where you will analyse and live stream game play. You will finish the 4-week academy by competing against established E-Sports teams across the country.
Animal Management Academy Start date – 8 June 2019
Have you ever wondered the best way to handle a python or how tricky it is to catch a sheep or goat? Do you contemplate what fruit chickens like best for their tea or if ferrets prefer scrambled or boiled eggs at breakfast time? Would you like to plan and prepare enrichment activities for our coati or our families of rabbits and guinea-pigs? Would you like to assist in flying ‘Swoop’ the owl? Course Description This four-week course aims to provide a relaxed and informative introduction to the key skills needed to care for furry, feathered, fleecy and scaly animals. During the course you will work in small teams, building up your skills and confidence, to prepare for an interactive ‘Animal Presentation’ for your invited guests in your final week. No previous knowledge of caring for animals is necessary – you bring the enthusiasm and we’ll provide the experience! Please email zbrown@nescot.ac.uk before booking if you have any allergies that could affect you whilst on the course e.g. allergies to animal fur, hay and straw or nut-containing animal feeds. Students will also need warm and waterproof clothes and stout shoes or wellingtons as there will be outdoor activities.
