Course Summary

The Foundation Degree in Supporting Teaching and Learning is a 2-year full-time course providing you with an opportunity to extend your knowledge and skills in supporting teaching and learning in the classroom. It will give you an opportunity to network with colleagues and to enjoy the challenges of further study. The course is validated by the University of Greenwich. Whilst the Foundation Degree is a qualification in its own right, with further study it can also lead to a top-up BA Honours Degree. There is an expectation that students will undertake further study following the lectures to deepen their knowledge and understanding, this is conducted at the student’s convenience.

What are the entry requirements?

All candidates will be interviewed and will be required to undertake an assessment. Applicants are normally required to hold a level 2 qualification in Communication or a GCSE in English Language. An appropriate level 3 qualification in Learning Support is normally required. Where appropriate, candidates with substantial relevant experience as a teaching assistant in a relevant setting may be considered. There is no formal entry requirement for numeracy or IT; support will be available to facilitate the achievement of level 2 in both these areas whilst taking the Foundation Degree. This may require some independent study.

What are the next steps?

This course will enable students to gain a deeper understanding and insight into their work in highly complex settings. Graduates will become more effective practitioners and play a full part in professional teams within an educational setting. This award will allow learners to progress to a top-up Honours Degree – BA Education Studies – NESCOT (validated by University of Greenwich). With further study this may then lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or Qualified Teacher Learning + Skills (QTLS).

The Teacher Training Department at Nescot prides itself on flexible and targeted provision of courses for those who want to teach. These courses are designed for those with a real passion for teaching and will show you how to transmit that passion directly to your pupils and students in the classroom arena while giving you the solid qualifying foundations you need to teach.

The course includes both formative or practice assessment and formal summative assessments. The purpose of a formative assessment is to develop and test your understanding in the subject area. Formative assessments do not count towards your final module mark but your course team will give you feedback to help you improve. Formal or summative assessments normally count towards your module/unit mark and therefore towards your final award (i.e. distinction/ merit/pass).

Assessment methods may include a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and often a major project or dissertation in the final year.

The BA Honours Degree in Education is a top-up programme of 120 credits at Level 6 for those who already hold a foundation degree (such as the existing Foundation Degrees in Education and Training, Early Years, and Supporting Teaching and Learning) or their equivalents at Level 4 & 5 with total credits of 240. It will give participants a new network of colleagues and an opportunity to enjoy the challenges of further study for a full degree award. There is an expectation that students will undertake further study following the lectures to deepen their knowledge and understanding, this is conducted at the student’s convenience.

What are the entry requirements?

The PCE requires 100 hours of mandatory teaching practice during the period of training. Nescot will provide teaching practice placements for full time applicants. Placement places are limited and distributed on a first-come first-served basis.

Students are required to hold a professional or vocational qualification at level 3 or above in the subject they wish to teach and an English GCSE grade 4 or above, or equivalent. The Professional Certificate in Education (PCE) (FE & SS) at Nescot is a two-year part-time course leading to a recognised level 5 teaching qualification, validated by the University of Greenwich. This course provides individuals with a professional teaching qualification, for those without a degree but having a professional or vocational competency qualification at Level 3 or above and who would like to teach students aged 14 years or older.

BA (Hons) Professional Practice Working With Children and Young People (0-19) - Level 6 Full Time (Top-up)

(Fridays - online from 3.30pm - 5.30pm and Saturday attendance for lectures from 10am - 12pm)

Course Summary

This unique course has been developed in response to employer and students’ feedback and is a Level 6 Top Up Award for those working or volunteering with children aged 0 – 19 years in either early years, education, or health settings. The course aims to produce child centred graduates with the leadership skills, knowledge, confidence, and resilience needed to ensure effective child-centred professional practice and professionalism in the workplace.

What are the entry requirements?

Students are required to hold a degree in their Applicants will need to hold one of the following qualifications:

• Foundation Degree in Early Years OR

• Healthcare Play Specialism OR

• Level 5 qualification in a related field e.g. Education; Play Work; Youth Work or Health and Social Care.

Evidence of level 2 Literacy will also be required, for example key skills or functional skills at level 2 or GCSE English language at Grade C/4 or above. If applicants do not have evidence of Literacy at level 2, it will be necessary to complete a piece of writing to demonstrate competence in written English. Other requirements:

A current, clean DBS Check.

To be working in an appropriate setting with children aged between 0 – 19 years (either paid or voluntary) for at least 16 hours per week for the duration of the course.

In addition to the above all candidates are required to evidence suitability for the course (from either their work-based setting or where they volunteer) with a professional reference, confirming that the setting is fully supportive of completing the programme. Evidence of this is required with a signed agreement.

The course will be an excellent progression route into careers that require a post graduate qualification, for example; Early Years Teacher status, Qualified Teacher status or PGCE.

The distinctive feature of this course is that there is a focus on developing resilience and confidence in students to support their transition from Level 5 to 6.

Students will be advised at interview of the required prerequisite qualifications such as Maths, English and Science GCSE if this is their intended route.

The team responsible for delivering the programme have a broad range of expertise within the sector from working directly with children, performing at a senior management level, and influencing national policy and practice. As members of various national bodies (directly concerned with children) all teaching and learning is informed by current research and proven best practice.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements however, if you cannot demonstrate Level 2 ability in Literacy and Numeracy, you will be supported in working to achieve this. This may require some independent study.

What are the next steps?

On successful completion of the AET L3, one possible progression route is the Foundation Degree in Supporting Teaching and Learning. This is a 2-year full-time course providing you with an opportunity to extend your knowledge and skills in supporting teaching and learning in the classroom. It will give you an opportunity to network with colleagues and to enjoy the challenges of further study. The course is validated by the University of Greenwich. Whilst the Foundation Degree is a qualification in its own right at Level 5, with further study it can also lead to a top-up BA Honours Degree (Level 6), followed by the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) (Post-compulsory - Level 6).

These courses are designed for those with a real passion for teaching and will show you how to transmit that passion directly to your students in the classroom arena while giving you the solid qualifying foundations you need to teach in this exciting sector.

Course Detail

The Award in Education and Training programme at Nescot College is an initial award, aimed at candidates who are:

• Pre-service and wish to explore the possibility of teaching in Post-16 education, or

• In-service and require an introduction to teaching in Post-16 education, or

• In-service and would like to progress to the full teaching qualification leading to QTLS status, or

• In-service and would like to progress to the teaching qualification leading to ATLS status for those with a more limited teaching role.

Nescot is in Ewell in Surrey. We are on the outskirts of London, in a safe and well-connected area.

We’re within easy walking distance of two train stations, Ewell East and Ewell West, and there are buses linking us to Morden underground station and Kingston. We have a large free car park with easy access to the M25, A3, A23, A24 and A21, and we’re halfway between Heathrow and Gatwick.
