SUPPORT, INSPIRE AND PROMOTE SMALL BUSINESS ON 6TH DECEMBER AND BEYOND
SmallBusinessSaturdayUK.com @SmallBizSatUK SmallBusinessSaturdayUK
Join the national campaign to celebrate your local shopping parade Saturday 6th December is the day designated by the national Small Business Saturday campaign to promote our small retailers and to encourage people to shop locally across the UK’s high streets. With the Christmas lights now turned on, the businesses of Central Parade are looking forward to a busy pre-Christmas period. With a trial extension to the free parking (1 hour free parking starting on 1st December); this is the perfect time to revisit your established traders in preparation for Christmas and to sample the goods and services of some of the new businesses recently arrived in the Parade. Ken Burgess, Chair of the Central
Parade Business Partnership (CPBP) says: “We are extremely fortunate to have such a diverse range of shops in the Parade. Not every high street can still claim to have a Post Office, pet shop, bank, butcher, fruit and veg shop, supermarket, chemist, florist, bakers, dry cleaners, card shop and hardware shop within a few minutes walk. New Addington has this and much more”. The Parade now also boasts an impressive mixture of cafés and take-aways, food and drink retailers, health, beauty,
household and professional services Helen Mason, Business Adviser to the New Addington BID compares the Parade to many other South London High streets when she says “we have all seen that it is not unusual for a high street to have a limited range of shops and an overrepresentation of certain sectors; such as betting shops, charity shops or loan companies, as businesses respond to tough times and less cash in people’s pockets. New Addington bucks the trend. The Central Parade Business Partnership should be proud; not only to have achieved a full take-up of the available shop premises, but also to be providing such a strong mix of local goods and services to its local residents.” For more information on New Addington BID go to: www.bidcpbp.co.uk
The Central Parade Business Partnership (CPBP) wishes all its customers, residents, partners and fellow traders a very happy healthy Christmas season and a prosperous New Year in 2015 6

Front Cover Special
New
Front Cover Competition in association with Addington High School As the editor of the New Addington Magazine I have to spend time organising adverts, community features and deciding on what to put on the front cover. December was fast approaching and I really wanted the front cover of the Christmas Issue of the New Addington Magazine to be created by our readers. I went to see Christopher Owens, Assistant Headteacher from the Addington High School and asked him for the schools help. (See back page for more details of how to contact the school).
It was immensely difficult to choose just one winner ‌ We selected Liam Clarke’s entry as the Winner for the front cover. We think it looks beautiful x

The design specification included: Related to Christmas, Colourful, Eye-Catching, Uplifting and fit into the box size on the front cover 150mm x 145mm. All of the entries were amazing and I 2nd Place - Tyler Dalton in 7D loved them all! 3rd Place - Josh Crossgell in 7A
4th Place - Jamie Rice - Jones in 7D 5th Place - Ria Thorpe in 7D

Editors Letter Welcome to the Christmas issue...
Hello everyone, There is something magical about this time of year, we all come together to share our blessings and reach out to those less fortunate. There is a host of initiatives taking place in New Addington to support families by providing some basic essentials such as food, presents for the kids and someone to talk you. The Salvation Army have organised a Food Bank with Iceland, so please give what you can. You can find out how you can help via the New Addington Pathfinders group on facebook. Massive Congratulations to Sarah Jane Atkinson & Shirley Murphy, two incredible ladies who organise the Face2Face group and Energetic & Wise. They won The Croydon Guardian Champions Award which is an amazing achievement. So proud of you both xx I’m loving the Christmas lights! So far we have enjoyed the Christmas Lights at the parade, Alex Hopkinson turned on his amazing lights on Kind Henry’s Drive and Paul Murphy who will be launching his light show to music at 11 Leveret Close, CR0 0ER on Saturday 6th December at 5pm. Special guest Malachi will be switching on the lights and raising money for his charity Malachi’s Only Wish. We hope you
will all attend and donate as the light show will continue every night throughout Christmas. Christmas is soooo contagious and I know some of you have already completed your Christmas shopping (Lisa!) This year I have really embraced the Christmas Spirit and for the first time (in quite a few years) I will put up a Christmas tree. I have already purchased the “Pink Baubles” and plan to decorate at least one room in the house! If you are really proud of your Christmas tree please share it with us on the facebook page www.facebook. com/newaddingtonmagazine. Lastly, I want to thank the generous advertisers who have continued to advertise with us and a big welcome to the new advertisers who have joined us this month. Your message will be hand delivered to 7,500 homes & businesses, with another 500 copies available from pick up points reaching an audience of 20k readers. I hope you enjoy the special features in this issue and please continue to support your local businesses and actively use their services. Until we meet again next month, have a super Christmas and I’ll see you in the New Year. .

Christmas Feature
How to Make Your Own Christmas Crackers in 6 Simple Steps The traditional Christmas cracker was invented by Tom Smith of London in 1847 and resembles an oversized sweet-wrapper. We all love winning the prize inside the cracker and just image how fabulous it would be to win something specifically chosen for you. That’s why I love homemade crackers... Equipment Required: • Toilet roll tube or kitchen roll barrel • Glue (I used pritt stick) • Scissors • Christmas wrapping paper or tissue paper • Cracker snap (Not essential) • Tinsel, Ribbon or string for tying • Small gift, toy & Sweets • Party hats and hand written jokes (Not essential) • Optional: Additional decoration material, stickers, paint, glitter & ribbons.
Procedure: 1 Take your wrapping paper and measure 3 times the size of the toilet roll approx 30cm x 20cm and cut to size. 2 Lay out your paper and glue the snap, only sticking the ends to the paper to make sure it will snap when you pull the cracker. 3 Place the tube in the centre of the paper and using a tight grip and rolling away from yourself, roll the paper onto the tube. Then glue the seam of the cracker. 4 Using a piece of tinsel / ribbon, tie around the paper at the ends of the central section in the paper to create a neck at either end of the cracker. Tip: Gently twist the ends of the cracker to shape before you add the tinsel. 5 Add gifts to the cracker by dropping them carefully into one end. Tip: Add the personal touch by adding a special gift, hand written jokes or name tag. 6 Repeat no 4 and twist the other end of the cracker and tie with your tinsel.
Finishing Touches: Gently shape your cracker ends and personalise them with more decorations!
Are you going to make your own Christmas crackers this year? What will you put inside them? Looking forward to hearing all your comments and seeing pictures of your finished Crackers on my facebook page www.facebook.com/ newaddingtonmagazine Special thanks to Sophie from Warm Wishes & Fairy Kisses for helping me make the Christmas Crackers. Merry Christmas to you all and have a super New Year x Note: You can be very creative with the content of your crackers. Banking By Martin Lewis
It’s not yet time to hoot the horn in celebration, but There’s a bank account price war. They’re desperate for switchers - paying cashback on bills, 5% savings, or just bunging you cold hard cash. Yet just 2% of people have switched in the last year. Unless you’re 100% happy with your bank, check now if you can gain. The contest has stretched far beyond traditional banks. Even M&S wants to be, well, the M&S of banking. It’s just launched its first fees-free account. In fact so much so, it’s willing to bribe you with a £100 voucher if you switch.
The www.halifax.co.uk Reward account
So here’s what you need to know about the best fee-free bank accounts...
Santander wins my ‘most innovative account’ pick
7-day switching means it’s now mostly no hassle. The 7-Day Switching system now moves your direct debits and standing orders, closes your old account and ensures payments made to it get forwarded to your new bank - all set up within seven working days.
£100 switching bribes galore. If they’ll pay you to switch, unless there’s a compelling reason, grab the cash. Though you’ll need to pass the credit check and genuinely switch to get the money…..
The new www.marksandspencer.com account Gives £100 on an M&S gift card if you switch, one reward point for every £1 spent at the store, a £100 interestfree overdraft and doesn’t require you to pay a minimum amount each month. While decent for regular M&S shoppers, basic rate taxpayers will need to spend £500/ mth there for it to beat Halifax and its bank’s service is untested compared to First Direct.
Gves £100 cash to switchers and pays a flat £5 (after basic rate tax) each month you’re in credit. Avoid its costly overdraft though. The min pay-in’s £750/mth.
While technically not fee-free - www.santander.co.uk 123 account only charges £2/mth fee and for most this is dwarfed by what it pays back. While Santander was once known for poor service, the 123 account is our second highest-rated, with 75% saying it’s great. The minimum pay-in is low too, at £500/mth (equivalent £6,000 salary). As Kelly tweeted me (@martinslewis) “I’m getting about £18 per month back after my fee - fantastic. £6 just for my mortgage.”
Switch bank and earn 5% savings A range of top fee-free bank accounts now offer high savings rates as loss-leaders to get you to switch to them – such as TSB for up to £2,000 at 5%, for up to £5,000 Lloyds is 4% and for up to £20,000 (see above) Santander is 3%.
Slash overdraft costs An overdraft is a debt like any other. The key is to cut the interest so you can clear it quicker. There are two main choices…
The www.firstdirect.com account
Switch to a 0% overdraft

The Marketing Clinic
6 winning ways to increase response to your mailshots Wahay... the Chartered Institute of Marketing has reported a significant upswing in the use of targeted direct mail in the business to business and business to consumer sector. The keyword here is targeted. The days of buying a huge, random list and bombarding it with your messages in the hope that some will stick are over. However, if you’re looking to communicate with cold prospects consider a charming, relevant and targeted direct mail campaign. 1. Don’t do a cheap as chips flimsy flyer Use my Power of 3 for unless you are a cheap as chips flimsy results shoestring style 1. A teaser message to let the recipient know that something exciting is going to be hitting their doormat in the next few days. Use LinkedIn, twitter and Facebook to make that initial connection. Remember a teaser message is just that. A couple of lines to stimulate interest as opposed to a soliloquy on the assets of your business! 2. Make sure that your direct mailshot has intrigue and impact power. A lumpy enclosure such as a nice pen, an attractive coaster, a product sample; something off the wall but entirely appropriate for your brand will ensure the envelope is opened. If you’re going to use a colourful envelope match it to your brand. 3. Follow-up the prospects you really want to convert to paying customers either by telephone or go back to social media.
According to Marketing Week we have fallen in love with flyers again! Apparently big brands including Virgin Media have taken to using flyers – through business and consumer letter boxes. Use my Power of 3 for flyer success:
brand. Nice thick card at least 180 GSM, the input of a professional designer and some compelling statistics and benefits about your business combined with genuine customer testimonial will ensure your flyer has sufficient eye contact to make a connection where a real need exists.
2. Consider a genuine offer to stimulate responses and if you have an all singing all dancing website, promote this on your flyer. 3. Consider enclosing your flyer in an envelope with a hand written message if you are focusing on a small number of prospects. I can’t stress just how powerful this approach is if you are targeting prospects in your local geographic area. Writing “by hand” on the top right-hand corner of the envelope with a handwritten message in the middle of the envelope will guarantee the envelope is opened and your flyer read. In the last five years alone I have managed to generate hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of business for clients using these very simple techniques. What’s stopping you?

Pets Corner
Household
Tips Bearded A shiny Dragon loo Whilst they may look rather exotic, a bearded dragon is incredibly easy to look after. So for an older child they can become a very interesting pet to keep. With a large appetite eating both animal and plant matter, the cage needs daily spot checks to ensure cleanliness so an adult or older person needs to help with care.
If you have coke drinks in your house, especially the larger bottles, you’ll often have some left over that goes rather flat... Rather than waste it... just pour it around the pan of your loo. Leave it for half an hour and then flush. The lime scale will have dissolved and the pan will be lovely and shiny! :)
Whilst they’re happy to be kept caged on their own, bearded dragons do enjoy handling and once they’re comfortable with you they’ll sit with you, perched on your shoulder. When kept in their cage they need to have full spectrum lighting for between 12-14 hours a day and also a ceramic heat emitter to create a basking spot. Remember that they also have quite a long lifespan living anything up to around ten years old so they are a big commitment from this point of view. 28 The New Addington Magazine

FOR December
SCORPIO
By Astrologer Russell Grant
You'll be able to exercise your leadership talents effectively and productively at the start of December. People will appreciate your decisive approach and, at long last, some work will finally be accomplished. Your distinctive style will attract lots of romantic attention. Ultimately you'll be more interested in spending time with friends than pursuing a love affair. The Full Moon on the 6th will bring good news about a creative project or business initiative; this will be a great time to sign a contract. Spend extra time on your appearance at mid-month, as you'll be the subject of intense public scrutiny. Resist the urge to get in a power struggle with an authority figure, as you lack the influence to emerge victorious. Working for a humanitarian organisation will be both fulfilling and rewarding later in the month. The New Moon on the 21st is perfect for launching a campaign or going on job interviews. Christmas will be a lucrative time for you. A business or romantic partner will rely on your expertise in early December, which feels gratifying. You'll have a chance to make your workplace a more pleasant place during the first week of the month. Put up some decorations and improve the furniture placement. The Full Moon on the 6th puts a little extra money in your bank account, just in time for the Christmas holidays. Schedule a glamorous vacation at mid-month, when you'll be able to find some fantastic rates on luxury accommodations. The New Moon on the 22nd is perfect for applying to schools, launching a writing project, or going on a long distance vacation. December ends on an extremely positive note, with people celebrating your artistic talent. If you've ever wanted to start your own business, the end of 2014 is an opportune time to do so. Friends will be eager to give financial and emotional support near Christmas. It will be difficult to talk rationally to a business or romantic partner about your career prospects in the beginning of December. Postpone this discussion until later in the month. On the plus side, you have an exciting opportunity to get an advanced degree or publish an article in the days surrounding the 4th. The Full Moon on the 6th attracts both fame and acclaim and your friends will be quick to celebrate your success. Taking a short trip with the one you love is will be wonderful for you both in the middle of December. The two of you will benefit from a change of scenery. If you're single, you could find romance on this journey. The New Moon on the 22nd will cause your sensual side to come out. This is a wonderful time to exercise your powers of seduction. Money from an inheritance, dividend, or lawsuit will allow you to pursue your dream career as Christmas approaches. Your business or romantic partner will encourage you to take some time off for fun in early December. Be sure to follow their advice; you could really benefit from a break. You'll feel considerably better after launching a health regimen during the first week of the month. The Full Moon on the 6th prompts you to delegate work responsibilities to others so that you can have more leisure time. An intimate relationship will become much more rewarding at mid-month, when you're able to spend more quality time with your amour. If you're single, you could catch the eye of a dynamic executive. It may be best to play hard to get with this admirer, at least in the initial stages of your courtship. The New Moon on the 22nd is great for getting engaged, married, or joining households with the one you love. Alternatively, you may decide to launch a business alliance right around Christmas. Arguments over money could disrupt a romantic relationship in early December. You might be forced to apologise by buying your amour an expensive gift, so be careful what you say. The Full Moon on the 6th brings exciting news about a group endeavour. It looks like your team will be given recognition in the form of an award or grant. You may have to scale back your personal plans during the first half of the month, just to attend all the Christmas parties that will take place. Someone will be impressed by your expertise at mid-month and could make a pass at you. While this attention is flattering, you'll be more focused on finishing work so you can enjoy the holidays. The New Moon on the 22nd brings an exciting job assignment that puts a spring in your step. It looks like you'll have an opportunity to hone your creative talent as December draws to a close.
Don't let your family comment on your love life in the opening days of December. You have a right to your privacy. Sneaking off to some private hideaway with your amour during the first week of the month will be extremely enjoyable. The Full Moon on the 6th marks an impressive career achievement. Prepare to receive a raise, promotion, or award. Relatives will be eager to welcome you back into the fold at midmonth. The Christmas holidays have a way of softening people's hearts. You'll be able to indulge your sentimental side during the third week of December. Spend this time putting up decorations, listening to carols, and making favourite delicacies from childhood. The New Moon on the 22nd will prompt you to launch a creative project or embark on a romance. There's also a chance someone will announce they are having a child, setting off a lovely round of celebrations at Christmas. You'll get plenty of support on the home front in early December, especially as far as finances are concerned. Be sure to attend a glamorous party during the first week of the month, as you'll meet several interesting people. The Full Moon on the 6th finds you graduating from a class or winning a legal settlement, giving you a profound sense of satisfaction. Spending more time at home during mid-month allows you to enjoy the Christmas season in style. Don't feel pressured to keep up a frenetic pace at work. An unreasonable business or romantic partner will mock your family traditions as the holidays approach, but pay no attention. They're just jealous of your capacity to enjoy this magical season. The New Moon on the 22nd is ideal for buying or selling of all types, large and small scale. 2014 ends on a high note, with your health getting a significant boost from a fitness regimen. You'll be able to lead a team to victory in early December. People have tremendous respect for your talent and expertise. Take this opportunity to negotiate a raise or higher paying job. The Full Moon on the 6th finds you getting a reward or recognition for your efforts. Spend this money on lavish Christmas presents for your nearest and dearest. You might have a chance to go on a glamorous business trip in midDecember. Getting paid to travel is your idea of heaven. Don't worry; this journey won't affect your holiday plans. You'll be back at home in time for all the family festivities. The New Moon on the 22nd brings good news about a friend, neighbour, or cousin. This is truly reason to rejoice. Christmas brings a sense of profound peace and contentment. Celebrate this special time with friends at an intimate party. Your family may not be especially sympathetic to your heavy work schedule in early December. Fortunately, you'll fare better with a romantic interest that is eager to lighten your load. The Full Moon on the 6th brings about an exciting turning point in a relationship. This is a great time to get engaged or married. If you're single, prepare to meet someone who speaks to your soul near this fateful date. You'll get a mid-month raise or bonus which allows you to enjoy the Christmas season in style. Throwing a big party for friends and family will be lots of fun. The New Moon on the 22nd attracts a great job offer from a humanitarian organisation. It looks like your professional star will rise in 2015. Don't be surprised if you're occupying a corner office by this time next year. Alternatively, you could launch your own business, which might suit you even better. Urge the team to put forward an extra impressive performance at the beginning of December. If you work hard at this stage, you could be given a nice little bonus, just in time for Christmas. The Full Moon on the 6th yields impressive results from a fitness regimen. Don't be surprised if you attract lots of romantic attention at holiday parties. Spending time on solitary activities mid-month helps recharge your batteries. Be sure to get plenty of sleep during this festive but frenetic time. You'll be looking your best during the second half of December and will be able to lure the object of your affection into your bed with very little effort. The New Moon on the 22nd is ideal for changing your look. Go ahead and splurge on a salon treatment or wardrobe upgrade. Finding spiritual fulfilment will become increasingly important as 2014 draws to a close. Working behind the scenes will prove productive at the start of December. Fortunately, your business or romantic partner will provide lots of support during this busy time. You'll be able to cope with the stress by getting plenty of exercise, especially throughout the first half of the month. The Full Moon on the 6th finds you taking a romance to the next level. If you're already in a relationship, you and your partner may decide to embark on a creative endeavour together. At the very least, you should plan a fun vacation together. The Full Moon on 6th brings the successful end of a creative project; you'll finally be rewarded for having a unique voice. More money for luxuries becomes available mid-month, allowing you to afford extra nice Christmas presents. Of course, you should buy yourself something special, too. The New Moon on the 22nd gives you a chance to enjoy the holiday season in heavenly peace. Be realistic when setting work deadlines at the beginning of December. It's better to be conservative with customers when predicting when you can finish jobs, so they won't be disappointed. You will get an opportunity to take the lead of a very prestigious assignment. If you perform well with this job, you'll be given an impressive raise. The Full Moon on the 6th marks an exciting time for your family. An engagement, marriage, or birth will set off a round of festive parties. Friends will want your company as the holidays approach; you'll have to choose among several enticing invitations as Christmas draws closer. You might have to spread yourself thin during this busy time. The New Moon on the 22nd finds you realising a childhood dream and nobody is more surprised than you. Pause to give thanks for your blessings. Making a donation to charity will continue to keep the good energy flowing, right into 2015.

New Addington Established 2010
Thank you to all who attended the Remembrance Day Parade and Service this year, and to all those who gave their time and goodwill for a respectful and well attended event.
It will soon be Christmas!!! We aren’t surprised to report that all tickets for the free Salvation Army Pantomime have been allocated. We are hoping everyone will give back generously and remember those less fortunate by bringing with you, or by donating gifts and goods (non-perishable) when you come to the Panto, or any Tuesday or Sunday morning. Should you be able to donate, there is a need for toiletries, Christmas gifts and treats for adults and especially children for the Salvation Army to distribute through The Vine food bank and also via Christmas Hampers. Other events we enjoy are our annual turning on of the Christmas Lights. Thanks goes to Mick Watts and his team, and Bottons Fun Fair for all their hard work every year in providing this entertainment for us. Our elderly residents will also be enjoying their annual Christmas Dinner at the ACA on 6th December with displays from Dance with Grace and other entertainment. How great that local residents will again be helping to provide transport for them to arrive, and to get them home safely afterwards. The community Christmas Tree, bought to you by Pathfinders and the Christmas Lights committees, will again be available for anyone who wishes to place on a bauble or decoration. Some wish to remember a loved one, some just to say Merry Xmas – all are welcome.

Do you love animals and the glorious local countryside? Have a couple of hours to spare per week?... then our friendly flock needs you and so do we please! The Downlands Partnership’s livestock has been grazing for conservation at Hutchinsons Bank Local Nature Reserve and neighbouring Chapel Bank over the last few years. The main access to the reserve is off Featherbed Lane, New Addington. We rely on the invaluable voluntary support of local stock checkers to help keep an eye on our animals whilst they are on site. We urgently need some extra volunteers for our ‘livestock lookers’ rota please, during the week (especially Tuesdays) and at weekends. Our sheep and Dartmoor ponies will be residing this winter and are ready to welcome you! Full training and support will be given by our Grazing staff. If you are interested please call 01883 341140 and speak to Sean or James to find out how to get involved.
Many thanks!
