About one in eight women in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. There’s a good chance of recovery if it’s detected in its early stages. Sutton has highest rate of breast cancer deaths in London, say Office of National Statistics.
YOUR CHECK LIST
DO YOU KNOW? Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the population • Breast screening is a way of detecting breast cancer at a very early stage by taking an x-ray or mammogram, of each breast. It can detect small changes in breast tissue which are too small to be felt but could lead to cancer. • Screening is free and is provided every three years to all women aged 50 and over. Women over 70 years are encouraged to make their own appointments at their local unit every three years. • Results are sent to the woman and her GP within two weeks. • If women are in between GPs or unregistered with a GP, they may not receive an appointment, so it is important to get registered as soon as possible. • In the near future there are plans to lower the age of screening to include women aged 47 and upwards to 73. • In Croydon, the screening site is based at Impact House 2 Edridge Road, a walk in centre (WIC), by the flyover. The centre has wheelchair access and is easily reached by public transport, but you can attend for screening at any other breast screening location.

How to plan the content of your book... An exclusive extract from Number 1 bestselling author Dee Blick’s latest critically acclaimed book The Ultimate Guide to Writing and Marketing a Bestselling Book on a Shoestring Budget. At the content gathering stage you start thinking in detail about your book and exploring the options without putting the brakes on your thoughts and your ideas. Your best ideas are formulated when you’re in this creative mode. This means expanding further on your big idea. For example you could think about the case studies and all of the material that’s going to give your book substance, depth and gravitas; material that will make it a compelling and captivating read. If you skip this crucial stage and head straight into writing chapters, you’ll short change your book and your readers. I spent several weeks gathering the content for this book as follows: • I researched half a dozen books on this subject and made a note of the tips I thought were really helpful and that I should include. • Over several weeks I wrote copious notes on the content I wanted to include with the reasons why I believed that established and budding authors would benefit from it. • I began to think about my guest contributors and the role they would each play in my book. I drafted their questions and then refined them as my thinking became clearer. • I sketched out the rough titles for my chapters, knowing I would change them further on but I needed a starting point. 6
The New Addington Magazine
• I gathered the marketing articles, blogs, emails and tips I’d written in the last few years to promote my books. • I revisited the notes I had written for my previous books and extracted sections I thought my readers would benefit from in this book. Great ideas don’t usually emerge the moment you pick up your pen so be patient and you will be rewarded. How much time should I spend gathering my content? You can spend so long on the content gathering stage of your book that when you’ve reached the end you’ve lost the will to write it. Be disciplined. Set a date by which you’ll have completed this process. You can fall into the trap of thinking that you have to cover every single facet of your subject matter for your book to be perfect. Firstly, I would imagine it’s nigh on impossible for you to do this. And secondly, even if you could cover everything there is to know about your subject matter, your book would resemble an encyclopaedia. Many readers would find a book that size disheartening. What should I include in my book? These questions will help you decide.
By Dee Blick
What content can I include that’s not essential but will add value to my book? (You may want to include case studies and tips that will reinforce key points and make your book easier to understand). Would guest contributors enhance my book and if so what do I want them to share and why? What am I not going to include in my book because it’s outside of my skills, experience and expertise or because it’s just not needed? I have more than enough great content anyway.

Plant of the Month
Mimosa
Growing up to 8 feet tall, the Alpinia Zerumbet (best known as ‘shell ginger’) produces tropical looking flowers once into its second year which resemble sea shells. They are best grown in rich, medium-wet soil that is well drained in full sunshine or partial shade. You can also keep them indoors but they need to be in a bright and humid atmosphere. The fragrance of these plants is wonderful and together with the striking form and colour make for an amazing plant - as long as you get some sunshine!

Health the HARCOMBE WAY
The Truth about Fat
Thirty years ago we demonised ‘fat’ – saturated fat especially. Only it wasn’t fat that we demonised. We called biscuits, cakes, confectionery, crisps, ice cream, pastries, pies, savoury snacks etc “saturated fat”. They are, of course, junk food; predominantly carbohydrate and, perhaps surprisingly, invariably containing more unsaturated than saturated fat. Nutritional gold mines – meat and dairy products – were put on the same list, rather like lumping Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker together. They could not be more different. So let’s state some facts about fat and I mean real fat – not processed food or carbohydrates or anything else that we have got terribly wrong... 1) Fat is utterly life vital There are three fats: saturated; monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. We would die without these fats and we must consume them in our diet. Fat provides the two essential fats (omega-3 and omega-6) and the four fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. From eyesight to bone density to cell viability to blood health – every fat soluble vitamin is utterly vital for our survival. 2) We need to eat more fat The UK government’s own data confirms that we are dangerously deficient in fat soluble vitamins. The UK Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs) are inexplicably low compared to American nutritional standards. The average UK citizen is getting 2.78mcg (micrograms) of vitamin D from household food. The UK RDA is a paltry 5mcg. The USA upgraded their RDA from 10mcg to 15mcg in 2011. Hence UK citizens are getting half the UK requirement for vitamin D, or one sixth of a much wiser minimum. It’s no wonder that the UK has seen a re-emergence of rickets in children. 3) Every food that contains fat contains all three fats... ... there are no exceptions. Meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, avocados, oils, nuts 12 The New Addington Magazine
and seeds – all of these foods contain all three fats – saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. The only thing that varies is the proportion of each fat. It is therefore impossible to avoid one fat and consume another. This alone makes nonsense of the idea that saturated fat is bad and unsaturated fat is good – why would they always be found together, without exception? 4) Only one food group contains more saturated than unsaturated fat Dairy products are the only food group with more saturated than unsaturated fat. Meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds and even lard – all have more unsaturated than saturated fat. Not that any real fat is better or worse than any other, but just to set the record straight. If you think that Mother Nature is trying to kill you – by all means avoid dairy produce. But you have no reason to avoid any other real food – offal, red meat, seafood, eggs etc. And you had better eat over 200g of fish (with bones) daily (or 39 eggs!) to get just the vitamin D, let alone the calcium and phosphorus, so vital for bone health. 5) Dietary advisers don’t know their fats from their elbow! How often are we told to consume olive oil and to avoid red meat? Olive oil is pure fat – it contains no water, protein or carbohydrate. In 100g of olive oil 73g is monounsaturated fat, 14g is saturated and 11g is polyunsaturated (trace elements make up the rest). Pork is 75g water, 21g protein, 1.8g monounsaturated fat, 1.5g saturated and 0.5g polyunsaturated fat. So, olive oil has
25 times the total fat of pork and over 9 times the saturated fat content. Bet you didn’t know that! We are told to eat oily fish and avoid red meat. Mackerel has twice the overall fat of sirloin steak and one and a half times the saturated fat. 6) Fat has not made us fat The average UK person consumed 51.7g per person per day of saturated fat in 1975 and 28.1g in 1999. Intake of all fat, butter, meat, whole milk and eggs fell. Dramatically in some cases – the UK eats half the number of eggs that we used to and one fifth of the butter and whole milk. During this time obesity increased from 2.7% for men and women in 1972 to 22.6% for men and 25.8% for women in 1999 – almost a tenfold increase in obesity, as saturated fat intake all but halved. 7) Saturated fat has never even been on trial In the 1984 document that first demonised saturated fat, the following confession is made: “There has been no controlled clinical trial of the effect of decreasing dietary intake of saturated fatty acids on the incidence of coronary heart disease nor is it likely that such a trial will be undertaken.” They may be even more astonished to know that the trial has still not been done nearly 30 years later. The UK Food Standards Agency admitted in 2009: “The ideal controlled dietary trial for prevention of heart disease has not yet been done and it is unlikely ever to be done.”

Common sense should tell you that the experiment doesn’t need to be done. Nature didn’t provide food, containing all the essential fats, protein, vitamins and minerals that we need for survival and then lob in something harmful at the same time. Will biscuits, cakes, confectionery, pastries etc make you fat and sick? I have no doubt. But they are not fats – they are junk food carbohydrates. If you think that 60% of the few grams of fat in your steak are trying to save you while the other 40% is trying to kill you – may the force be with you!

New Nissan Qashqai Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer • www.carwriteups.co.uk •
@carwriteups
innovative safety features which helped it confidently pass all Euro NCAP’s tests to record the maximum five-star rating.
The latest Nissan Qashqai, which went on sale in January 2014, is available in four time-honoured grades: Visia, Acenta, Acenta Premium and Tekna. The model tested here comes in flagship Tekna trim. But we’ll come to that in a bit. Firstly, here’s some background. The second generation, family oriented car is now longer, lower and wider, giving it a more imposing stance while maintaining a raised driving position. The vehicle under review is front-wheel drive, the set-up which Nissan says will account for most sales, but all-wheel drive is available too. The Qashqai’s exterior looks modern and there’s a better quality feel to the cabin - perfect for many years of hardcore family use. The range-topping Tekna model features an array of technologies that highlight the Japanese motor manufacturer’s lead in the crossover market. But hang on, what is a crossover vehicle? Well, it’s a motor built on a car platform, combining characters of a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) with elements from an estate or a hatchback. The crossover mixes SUV design cues such as tall interior packaging, lofty seating, high centre of gravity and elevated groundclearance with car-like handling and good fuel economy. Anyway, back to the Tekna trim Qashqai under review. The Nissan benefits from
darkness piercing Bi-LED headlamps and it excels when it comes to kit. The car comes equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, part-leather seats, a large glass roof, heated seats, and front and rear parking sensors. There’s also a seven-inch touchscreen display, DAB digital radio, and smartphone connectivity. The Qashqai is available with a petrol or diesel engine; the review car came with turbocharged petrol power. But it turns out that the Nissan doesn’t need anything huge under the bonnet to deliver a firstrate drive. Motoring through a six-speed manual transmission, the 1.2-litre engine packs a punch, offering sharper acceleration and greater flexibility than the first generation Qashqai’s 1.6-litre unit. Despite its modest size, the engine’s low weight and more fuel-efficient operation also mean it’s cleaner and more economical than the model it replaces. The 1.2 engine emits just 129g/km of CO2 (15g/km less than the outgoing 1.6-litre petrol unit), and has an average fuel consumption figure of 50.4mpg. Being a family car, you’d expect safety to be a priority for the Qashqai – and you’d be right. The Nissan features a host of
Engineered to offer the best possible levels of protection for children, the fresh Qashqai particularly shone in the Child Occupant tests. Based on readings from the dummies used in tests, the Qashqai scored maximum points for its protection of an 18-month old infant. On that basis alone, I’m sold on the car – but then I do have an 18 month old and two other small children to take to school. I can definitely see the appeal – and so, it seems, do other parents. Yep, buy this car and your offspring will be safe from harm – even if it means you lose all individuality when you merge into the vast sea of other Nissan Qashqais parked outside the school gates. Car insurance prices have fallen 40% over the past two years, according to the AA. But with a rise in fraudulent claims, its latest index predicts an increase of up to 8% in 2015; others think 10% is possible. It’s worth checking if it’s worth it.

are steps to really kick it up. It’s important to understand that there’s no one cheapest provider, so it’s a case of following a system.
Never just do one comparison, you need a benchmark of a few comparisons to find out where’s cheapest. There’s a system to follow fully explained at www.mse.me/ carinsurance. In a nutshell…
and get a new policy now, the cancellation fee will diminish any savings – so that’s a bit futile. Yet there is another trick – www.aviva. co.uk, www.postoffice.co.uk and www.lv.com quotes last 60 days, so why not grab them now and you’re effectively locking in those prices in case they rise in the meantime.
Combine comparison sites. They don’t all cover the same insurers, so combining a number of sites is the best way to really make a meaningful saving. My current top picks for a typical driver are www.moneysupermarket.com, www.confused.com, and www. comparethemarket.com
Q Are the savings that great? Can’t you just auto-renew? A Never just auto-renew without
Check insurers that comparisons miss. Comparison sites let you compare 100s of insurers quickly but they don’t capture the entire market. The biggies, including Aviva, www.directline.com and www. zurich.co.uk only offer their products directly.
checking elsewhere, often it just lets insurers smack a price rise on you, as it knows apathy means many will keep paying more and more.
I’m not saying auto-renewing will never be your cheapest option 16 The New Addington Magazine
More than one car at home? Comparison sites can only cope with one car at once so don’t include
multi-car discounts. Therefore you should always manually check those that offer it. The big one is www. admiral.com multi-car, but www. churchill.com, www.directline.com and www.privilege.com also offer it. I’m not saying they’ll win, but that you should check. Difficult to insure? Use a broker. If you’ve difficult circumstances (eg, past bans or big accidents) that make getting insurance difficult, a comparison site is less likely to help as these are mainly focused on ‘normal’ policies. You may be better off finding a local broker - see the British Insurance Brokers’ Association website (www.biba.org.uk), as these can sometimes find a cheaper deal for you.
Q So it’s all pretty straightforward? A Ah if only. Common-sense doesn’t always do the job…
- Third party’s not always cheapest. Merely selecting comprehensive makes some insurers see you as a lower risk. So always check both. - Adding a responsible second driver can cut your costs. This can bring down your risk average and price – of course, it must be someone who may drive your car. As Mazzyb5 tweeted: “Took your advice and added mum – saved £500.”
Find out how to advertise YOUR BUSINESS here - Please call 07946 891 705
- Tweaking your job description can cut costs. I’m not saying lap dancers should call themselves cabinet ministers (or vice versa, heaven forbid). But these days many people have such specific job descriptions car insurers don’t list them, as Fabsternation tweeted: “Thanks. Changing from creative director to marketing manager saved £300.” See my fun car insurance job picker tool www.mse.me/jobpicker. - Beware paying monthly. A monthly payment plan for your insurance is essentially a high-interest loan. For example, if your premium is £1,000 but you’re paying an APR of 25%, your insurance will actually cost £1,140 once you factor in the interest. So either pay in full, or if you can’t afford it, use a credit card with a lower APR or better still, a 0% credit card for spending, ensuring your repayments are big enough to clear it within a year.
Q And any special tips for young drivers? A With the average premium for
a 17-22-year-old at an eyewatering £1,194 per year, young car drivers can be priced out – all the techniques above will help, but if you’re not getting there, check ‘pay how you drive’ (telematics) this involves a device being fitted inside your car that monitors your actions behind the wheel. Full info in www. mse.me/youngdrivers.
In dire straits? If the debts are all too much for you, it’s worth considering non-profit debt help from agencies like :-
• www.stepchange.org • www.citizensadvice.org.uk • www.nationaldebtline.org Don’t be scared to speak to them, they’re there to help not to judge.

FOR March
PISCES
By Astrologer Russell Grant
The early days of March are ideal for meeting someone special. Don't bother blending in with the crowd, stand out and shine. The secret of your allure is a distinctive appearance. The Full Moon on the 5th will mark the end of a difficult period. The results will be mixed, which is disappointing, but it can't be helped. You can't please all the people all the time. Your love life will blossom and bloom like spring flowers midmonth, but your work will suffer. Don't be surprised if your boss starts taking you to task for leaving on time and doing the bare minimum. Fortunately, the Solar Eclipse on the 20th brings an exciting career opportunity. Working behind the scenes at a hospital, university, or government agency works well for you. Your financial situation will improve dramatically towards the end of March. Take care to put a portion of your income into a savings account or your boosted bank balance will soon disappear. Spending time on your own will refresh your energy in early March. Sneak off to some secluded beauty spot that has always inspired you. Even waking up early to watch the Sun rise will prove therapeutic. The Full Moon on the 5th brings an angry conclusion to a relationship matter. You may decide a lover's demands are excessive, or that you're just not ready for a romance just yet. Things will settle down during the second half of the month, when your charm, wit and good looks will attract a legion of admirers. The Solar Eclipse on the 20th is perfect for launching a group effort, joining a humanitarian organisation or helping a charitable fund raising effort. Don't be surprised when a respected authority figure develops a crush on you as March turns into April. The two of you will make an impressive power couple. Do you already have a lover? Then take a romantic trip together. You'll be feeling restless at the beginning of March, but resist the urge to schedule a trip. You'll just have to cancel when a pressing obligation occurs. Fortunately, friends will be a welcome diversion while you're stuck at home. Be sure to attend a big surprise party. You'll have a lot more fun than you expect. The Full Moon on the 5th will force you to scale back work in favour of domestic responsibilities. Be realistic about how you schedule your time. It won't be possible to carry a heavy work load this month. Fortunately, your boss will be receptive to your suggestions after the 13th. Schedule important career talks after this date. A Solar Eclipse on the 20th invites you to apply for a position that becomes available quite unexpectedly. This is your chance to move up the ladder of success. This job will have significant fringe benefits. Your social life picks up as March melts into April. A raise, promotion, or well paid position will be offered to you in the beginning of March. Your star is on the rise. The Full Moon on the 5th warns against hasty communications. Bite your tongue instead of making sarcastic jokes. The last thing you want to do is insult someone who could be a powerful ally. You'll be put in charge of an unusual project in the first half of the month. Your unorthodox management style will prove effective. A Solar Eclipse on the 20th will find you taking an overseas trip. This unexpected journey will prove extremely romantic. If you're in a relationship, be sure to take your partner along. Spending more time with friends will brighten your mood as March turns into April. Be sure to attend as many parties during this exciting period as possible. All eyes will be on you. This calls for a shopping expedition. Your broad minded optimism attracts lots of fans in early March. Don't be surprised if you're given an opportunity to study abroad or publish a book. The Full Moon on the 5th forces you to take a second look at your budget. You'll have to make a few adjustments to cover increased expenses. A mentor will push you to expand your horizons at mid-month. You would be wise to follow this advice. A Solar Eclipse on the 20th brings an unexpected windfall. Put a good chunk of this money into savings, where it will protect you against financial uncertainty. A romance with someone who is much older or younger spices up the final days of the month. The two of you have lots to teach each other. If you're already in a relationship, encourage your partner to develop their artistic talent. Your support will prompt your amour to reach a whole new level of success.

Your love life will sizzle with excitement as March gets underway. Don't expect much cooperation from colleagues, who will be annoyed by your dreamy expression. It's hard to focus on work when you're falling deeper and deeper in love. The Full Moon on the 5th makes it difficult to find time for yourself. It's important to put your needs first, even at the risk of having an argument. Your best friend or lover will simply have to fare for themselves while you do the things you enjoy. A close relationship will get stronger at mid-month, when the two of you join forces on a creative project. The Solar Eclipse on the 20th will prompt you to launch a romance, business venture, or both. Two heads are much better than one on this magical day. Creating a budget is strongly advised towards the end of the month, when your financial priorities will change. A hidden benefactor will come to the rescue with a domestic matter in early March. Don't be surprised if someone gives you an inside tip on a property or investment deal. Taking advantage of this offer will result in a big, spacious home that is quite affordable. The Full Moon on the 5th brings an unpleasant secret to the fore. You will look at a colleague in a whole new light after this news comes out. An intimate relationship becomes a lot more serious during the second half of March. It looks like you and your amour are on the verge of making a serious commitment. If you already have a partner, they will come in to some extra money, which will benefit you. A Solar Eclipse on the 20th brings a fabulous work assignment. Getting paid to be creative is an answer to a prayer. The final days of March are perfect for adding decorative touches to your home. A promotion or high profile job will be awarded to you quite suddenly in early March. It's good to know you have the confidence of your superiors. The Full Moon on the 5th tears you away from an attentive lover. Although you'd rather be locked in your amour's arms, it's better to attend a special occasion for your best friend. You'll be able to quit a bad habit on or around the 6th, thanks to your terrific willpower. Resist the urge to do battle with a colleague in mid-March, or it will become impossible to do your work. A Solar Eclipse on the 20th is perfect for falling in love, getting engaged, or launching an art project. The final days of March will prove romantic, when your partner gives you a fabulous gift. Are you single? This is a great time to post a provocative profile on an online dating site. Beware of promising more than you can deliver in the first days of March. Unexpected delays will force you to cancel a commitment. Extraordinary romantic luck is coming your way on the 3rd. If you're looking for love, you will find it in an unusual place. If you're already in a relationship, your amour will have some exciting news that benefits you both. The Full Moon on the 5th forces you to spend more time away from home than you would like. Career demands will require you to put in long hours at the office. If you're out of work, you may get disappointing news about a job you wanted. Keep your chin up; better times are ahead. An opportunity to travel, write, or teach will arrive in mid-March. The Solar Eclipse on the 20th is perfect for finding a more spacious home or adding a member to your household. The beginning of March augurs very well for your home life. If you're looking for a place to live, search an up and coming neighbourhood. You could find a spacious place for an incredibly good price. Are you already happy with your abode? Think about making improvements to the bathroom or kitchen. Modern conveniences will add tremendous value to the place. The Full Moon on the 5th warns against getting into religious or political discussions. Although you're offended by someone's beliefs, you won't be able to change them. It's better to agree to disagree. Fighting will just undermine your reputation and make everyone around miserable. You will have to reconsider a spiritual matter in mid-March. Be willing to back away from a limiting philosophy. A Solar Eclipse on the 20th will prompt you to sign up for an art class. Developing your creativity will boost your self esteem and bring hidden talents to the surface. Practice humility throughout the early days of March. A wonderful teacher will come forward to help you. Turning away their assistance will be a terrible waste. Open yourself to new ideas. Working with a group will allow you to turn a good idea into a great one. You're sure to get some valuable feedback from the quirkiest members of the group. The Full Moon on the 5th forces you to dig down deep to pay a bill. You'll have to be extra frugal throughout the rest of March. Big changes will impact your social circle on the 17th, forcing you to reassess several friendships. Prepare for some shocking secrets to come to light. A plum position will be offered on the 20th, when a Solar Eclipse improves your financial prospects. This job will give you an extra measure of freedom, which is a relief. The closing days of March are ideal for domestic pursuits of all kinds. A lucrative job will fall in your lap in the opening days of March. The Full Moon on the 5th forces you to make some sacrifices for a neglected lover. If you're single, it may be because you are unrealistic about how much time an intimate relationship requires. Money will come in quite quickly during the first half of March. Resist the urge to go on a wild shopping spree. You're better off putting your earnings where they will work for you. You'll be given a greater measure of freedom at work in mid-March, when a boss is too busy to monitor your progress. A Solar Eclipse on the 20th is ideal for transforming your appearance. Now is the time to get a salon treatment, cosmetic procedure, or dental work. Keep your mobile charged as March turns to April, because you'll be fielding a lot of calls. That's the price you have to pay for being popular. Drop your brand onto 7,500 door mats with the The New Addington Magazine

Tips
Raspberry ICE Cream
Go Bananas!
You don’t need an ice cream maker for this easy recipe and if you fancy substituting the raspberries for another berry then you can! INGREDIENTS 300g frozen raspberries 100g sugar 150ml cream • Put the frozen raspberries and sugar into a blender. • Whilst it’s running, slowly pour in the cream and mix it up until it’s really well combined. • You can serve it immediately or freeze it.
If you keep bananas connected at the stem they will ripen faster and go squidgy and brown before you can use them all. So make sure you separate them and keep them away from other fruit to lengthen their shelf life. :)
The mixture lasts for up to one week.
Dry skin brushing – the fast effective morning detox
By Kristin Jade Neuwirth
This is nothing new. The Japanese and Scandinavians have been doing it for decades and it’s a well know Ayurvedic cleansing philosophy. A simple, fast, and uber effective daily detoxification technique, that helps the body inside and out. Dry skin brushing is the perfect start to your busy day. If you only get 5 minutes to yourself, this is the best way to spend it. Top 5 health benefits: 1 Stimulates the skin to increase blood circulation and rejuvenate cells, for better muscle tone and distribution of fat deposits. 2 Detoxifies the body by stimulating the lymphatic system to eliminate toxins. 3 Cleans the pores of the skin so they can absorb more oxygen and essential nutrients Strengthens the Immune system… under stress? You need this. 4 It stimulates nerve endings in the skin to revive out nervous system. 22 The New Addington Magazine
How to incorporate it into your daily life: Select a natural fiber body brush. Prior to your morning cleanse i.e. bath, shower, steam, sauna brush your whole body using long stroking movements in the direction of your heart. You want to follow the pathway of the lymphatic system. Work left to right, lower body to upper body, feet, legs, hands, arms, back, stomach (use a clockwise circular motion here to follow the movement of your digestive system), chest, then neck. Pay particular attention to the areas of the major lymph nodes: groin, under arms, base of neck. Use light pressure in more sensitive areas and avoid broken or sensitive skin areas. After 3-5 minutes follow with a bath or shower. It is now the perfect time to moisturize. For a super immune boost brush twice a day and for longer intervals. Don’t under estimate your skins role in daily detoxification.

Central Parade: Our High Street our future
By Ken Burgess, Chair, CPBP and New Addington BID
Industry and government reports consistently tell us that our local high streets are under pressure and need to think differently to survive.
and work hard as a BID board to improve the trading environment for our levy payers. Much of our work is to address the ‘usual suspects’ of cleanliness, security and business competitiveness. So we have introduced new cleansing and lighting schemes and opportunities for businesses to switch to cheaper telecom and utility providers.”
Business partnership leaders, town teams, industry experts and retail champions will be gathering together at the end of March at the Future High Street Summit in Nottingham to share experiences and ideas for more prosperous high streets. Hot topics will include the changing customer base, digital high streets, the nighttime economy and developing loyalty schemes. The common theme is ‘future proofing’ our high streets.
The way people shop has changed enormously and with it the demands and expectations of shoppers. In a world where people are increasingly mobile and online, high streets all over the country are discovering new ways to reach customers and to nail that sale.
At the same time the Mayor of London has announced another initiative to support business partnerships working together to develop new ideas to improve the look and feel of our high streets Central Parade may seem a long way from Nottingham and London City Hall, but on our high street our local traders are concerned with similar issues. Safety and security, cleanliness, good transport links, increasing footfall and trade and giving businesses a voice in local decisions are the main agenda items for discussion at the Business Improvement District (BID) Board meetings. Said Chair Ken Burgess, Chair of the CPBP BID; “We are extremely proud of the diversity of the retail offer on the Parade
The Central Parade Business Partnership (CPBP) has always been keen to champion the case for its local businesses. Now in its 3rd year of delivering the New Addington BID, the CPBP continues to work with the Council and other local partners including the Police, Fire Service and New Addington Pathfinders to develop new projects and practical arrangements to address the daily challenges businesses face. Central Parade may be the smallest BID in the UK; but it too is keeping up with the times and looking to the future. Ken continues: “The CPBP are constantly alive to new trends and pressures on our traders. As an example, our BID programme is planning to offer support and training in digital and online sales and marketing.”
Help our local high street by shopping locally and supporting your Central Parade traders.

Established 2010
Spring will have sprung by the time you read this. Clocks going forward means much needed brighter mornings and lighter evenings and a promise that summer – and your annual Carnival are just around the corner!
The theme for this year IS “Music through the Ages” and, holding the event on the 13th & 14th June means the added benefit of a birds-eye view of the Biggin Hill Festival of Flight from Milne Park ;) If you’d like to have a stall, make use of the arena for your local school or club, or join in the competitions, please search the New Addington Carnival’s Facebook page or email them on bookings.napc2010@gmail.com. The committee also have a few of their fundraising evenings coming up – the more money
the committee have to spend, the better the Carnival for you. There is also a gofundme page http://www.gofundme.com/ Please consider making a donation however small or large, all are gratefully received. For all the Spring and Summer events and childrens activity programmes keep an eye on our Pathfinders Group page on Facebook. A last congratulations to New Addington. In conjunction with the London Fire Brigade and Croydon Councils All Ages group, our area took 5 teams to the final of the Fire Safety Challenge at the Fairfield Halls. Of the 9 teams participating: 1st place went to Wolsey Parents team, 2nd place to the Energetic and Wise team, and 3rd place to Pathfinders youth. Thank you to all for a great, fun day!
