Things they don’t want you to know

By Martin Lewis @MoneySavingExpert

A company’s job is to make money, nowt wrong with that, but our job is to keep it. Some firms use a host of tricks to keep us in the dark, yet if you can uncover their secrets you can win. Their techniques are wide and varied. One example is ‘price differentiation’, where they aim to charge each customer as much as they’ll pay - often done using ‘white labels’, where the same thing is sold under different names. So here are 7 tricks to turn the tables… 1. British Gas customer? It also operates under the name Sainsbury's Energy but there it's £200/ year cheaper. British Gas runs Sainsbury's Energy for the supermarket, yet there you pay it far less. Based on a year’s typical dual fuel usage...

• • •

On British Gas’ standard tariff you pay an average £1,154. On British Gas’ Price Promise March 2016, its cheapest deal, you pay average £1,100. On Sainsbury Fixed Price March 2016, you pay average £950.

Sainsbury's Energy does have separate call centres, but it's still operated by British Gas and while like many energy firms it gets its fair share of complaints, in my most recent poll 43% rated its service 'great', British Gas 37%. So if for some reason you're brand loyal and want to stick with British Gas, huge savings are still possible. However, as always price varies by region and usage, so do a comparison to see how it stacks up for you via my www.CheapEnergyClub.com (where you also get switching cashback) or any www.ofgem.gov.uk approved comparison site. 2. Zara sells its clothes at a fraction of the price. If you’re one of millions planning a trip to Spain this summer, you may want to stop shopping at Zara here 12 The New Addington Magazine

right now. Spain is Zara's home country and it sells its clothes at vastly lower prices there. Better still, the www. zara.com Spain website has an English language option, you can compare prices before you go (you can’t order UK delivery from it). Clothes there are often cheaper in euros than in pounds, even before the currency conversion. In fact on a basket of goods it was on average 38% cheaper. Some of you may think ‘ah yes I’ve seen the euro price on some labels in the UK’, but that’s usually the French price, which is generally more expensive. This trick works for others in the same group, Massimo Dutti, Pull & Bear and Uterque. 3. If a loan's advertised at 3.9% rep APR, they're allowed to charge 20%. Every loan these days is listed as a 'representative' or 'rep' APR - that means by law only 51% of accepted applicants need to get the advertised rate. The rest can be and usually are charged more, and there's no cap on how much more. Worse, the only way to know is to apply, and that leaves a footprint on your credit file. So be very careful. One way to mitigate this somewhat is to use the calculator at www.mse.me/eligibility which tells you your odds of being accepted without marking your credit file. The higher your acceptance odds the more likely you are to get the advertised rate, although it’s not guaranteed.

4. Amazon shopper? You're entitled to music going back 16 years. If you've bought CDs or vinyl, you're entitled to the downloads for nowt going as far back as 1999. To be fair Amazon doesn’t hide that you can do this, but it’s a good trick. Just login to your www.amazon.co.uk music library to see if you’ve any past tracks available. As JHL1959 told me: "Crikey, it's given me 182 albums, that's 2,367 tracks. Amazingly, I still like a lot of them - cheered me up." It’s not always such a success though, GingerJuice said: "Just did this - thought it was brilliant then realised I'd bought the mother-in-law the Susan Boyle CD last year... ugh."

existing network and see if they’re cheaper. 6. Energy firms can't charge exit penalties within 49 days of a fix ending. If you’re on a cheap fixed energy deal you needn't wait until the last day to switch to avoid exit fees as rules state that 49 days before your fix ends, you're allowed to switch without penalty. 7. Play the codeshare trick - where two airlines sell the same flight. Airlines don't shout that their partners often sell their flights too, sometimes for less. If you're going on popular long-haul routes this can be a way to save.

5. Only get good mobile signal with one network? Switch to a piggyback. Many people tell me "I wish I could switch network but only Vodafone/EE works in my home." Yet there's a way to switch provider but keep the same signal... Only EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 are actual mobile networks, yet there are many cheap virtual networks piggybacking on the same signal. E.G. Giffgaff is O2, Asda is EE, TalkMobile is Vodafone and Shebang is Three (full piggyback list at www.mse.me/piggyback). So check which other providers piggyback on your

CONSUMER CHAMPION Private parking tickets – your rights By James Walker, www.resolver.co.uk Invoices not fines You know those signs you see in the car parks of supermarkets and retail parks stating that, if you park for longer than a set period of time, you get a parking ticket? Many people think that, if they fall foul of these regulations, the tickets they are issued are the same as those issued by councils for parking offences – and fear that if they don’t pay up, they’ll get a visit from the bailiffs. But this is not the case. These tickets are not fines – they’re invoices. Let me tell you a story about a woman – let’s call her ‘Lady X’ – and the letter she received through the post after visiting a major national supermarket – let’s call it Tescbury’s. Now, this particular Tescbury’s where Lady X shopped has a parking policy that prohibits drivers return to the car park within two hours once they’ve left. So Lady X did her shopping, packed it into her car and drove away. She then got to the first roundabout outside the supermarket, realised she’d forgotten to buy dog food and returned to the supermarket to get it. Two weeks later a £70 ‘fine’ drops through her letterbox, making that particular can of Winalot the most expensive dog food ever. But should she pay up? She has broken the stated ‘rules’ of the car park, but there are two questions she needs to ask – was the penalty imposed ‘reasonable and fair’? And: did the supermarket actually lose out because of her behaviour (ie can the supermarket or private parking contractor actually prove a ‘consequential loss’)? The answers here are almost certainly ‘yes’ and ‘no’ respectively; Lady X has in fact acted exactly

as Tescbury’s would want her to do – she has parked specifically to spend money in their store. But how could she challenge the ‘fine’ (translation: invoice)? For starters she could use resolver.co.uk to make her case. Read on and find out how… What is a Parking Fine Notice? A PFN sounds similar to the tickets issued by councils, which are known as Penalty Charge Notifications (PCNs). However, a PFN and a PCN are not the same. But while the PCN is a fine that can be enforced debt recovery if unpaid, The PFN is actually an invoice. Although the way the PFN is often presented does not give that impression! If you do not pay the ticket, it cannot affect your credit record and the issuers cannot send bailiffs to recover the money. If they want to force you to pay, they will need to take you to court, which is costly and time-consuming. What they are sending you is an invoice for a breach of contract. When you drive onto private land or a car park, you enter into an unwritten contract. The issue is therefore a contractual, civil matter and not a criminal one. Where could you receive a Parking Fine Notice? If you have parked on private land, for example a road, car park, shopping centre, retail park or supermarket car park, then you could receive a Parking Fine Notice. If you have paid If you want to appeal your ticket but have already paid, then unfortunately it is too late. If you want to dispute the ticket, never use terms such as appeal, as you are creating legitimacy for the ticket. Instead, state that you would like to “dispute the ticket”.

“IT’S ALL CHILDS PLAY”

Putting the fun into Father’s Day

With Father’s Day just around the corner, children in nurseries and schools around the globe will be lovingly making cards and gifts to let their dad’s know just how special they are. Wonderful as these glued and crafted creations are, as adults we all know that you can’t beat the warm glow that you get from spending quality family time together. This got me thinking about Father’s Day a few years ago when my husband, two children and I took a trip to the beach. “It’s like being a child again” said a granddad to me. Three generations of a family (women and all) had gathered by an inland boating lake, with their model boats proudly lined up in a row. The men cradled, cleaned and caressed their

boats, an ocean liner, tug boat, yacht and speedboat, before lining them up, side by side on the verdant grass, waiting for their turn on the water. The women had come prepared with chairs, flasks, sandwiches and lots of patience and good humour. Although they feigned boredom they were clearly almost as hooked as the men, enjoying the playful camaraderie of the occasion. It being nearly lunchtime, my children sat on a grassy bank, sandwich in hand, captivated as they watched the spectacle unfolded. As each vessel was carefully lifted onto the lapping water the suspense (of whether it would sink) was palpable as each child (and adult) perhaps imagined himself the 16 The New Addington Magazine

captain of a ship, travelling to some distant shore. With concentration interspersed with laughter and frivolity, the men proceeded to take it in turns ‘sailing’ their boats. It was in one such bout of laughter, creased over like a child with the ’full-bodied’ experience, that the granddad of the family explained to me how playing with toys made him feel. You could see it in his wide grin and eyes glinting with playfulness. The huge flashy speedboat (one of his son’s) had just had to be rescued by a tug (another son’s) in a dramatic manoeuvre, which clearly had tickled the father as well as the heckling women onlookers. Meanwhile my then five and eight year old (not to mention their Dad) sat watching mesmerised, drifting in distant shores judging by their glazed expressions. From doodling to sailing grown-up toy boats, even adults enjoy playing. Sat watching the adults and my children that day, it was difficult to tell the children and adults’ responses apart. It could so easily have been a game of conkers in the playground, the children carefully lining up their proud finds before making a selection and preparing for the ‘battle’. Play is all about the process and on that sunny day by the sea the process of play was apparent, as was the satisfaction, excitement and allure of distant shores. Whatever your plans this Father’s Day, make sure you make time for Dad’s to play. Sue is a published author, trainer, educational consultant and therapeutic play practitioner. Friends Adam Hillier and Joe Weller, who both live locally, set up the GreenThumb franchise for Croydon in 2005, when they were aged just 24 and 22 respectively, and May this year marks their 10 year anniversary. In that time they have gone on to expand into Bromley and parts of South London and even prestigious properties a stones throw from Buckingham Palace!

Today they manage a great team of 13 staff that deliver a friendly high quality service to almost 4500 customers. The service has all the benefits of a national company with payment options such as Direct Debit but the also the personal touch and dedication of a family business. Talking to and meeting customers to understand their needs and concerns can produce a wonderful lawn and also a great working relationship, in fact some customers are even now considered friends. Joe now spends most of his time on customer care and enjoys meeting new and old customers to ensure both the service and lawns are the best they can be. Adam spends most of his time at the computer scheduling the thousands of lawn treatments they now carry out each year to try and ensure that they never let anyone down. Sensei

S AY S

Sensei Rob Wood is a Fourth Dan in Goju-Ryu Karate and has taught children and adults for over 20 years in his dojo in the UK South Coast.

Is karate just for fighters? I like to think of Karate being a path that everyone can or maybe should take. Clearly I’m bias, but the benefits are immense and the fighting aspect is just a single entity in a huge collection of the Martial Art skill.

Needless to say, Karate is not just about facing physical violence physically. The installation of confidence is a huge by-product of being taught. Let’s face it, a confident and assertive person is far more unlikely to be a “target” for the undesirables in the world so ensuring my students can confidently assert themselves respectfully to peers and adults will forever stand them in good stead right the way through life.

S is for Safety and Security Our First Priority By Ken Burgess, Chair CPBP and New Addington BID

Issues of crime and disorder are always high on the list for any group of high street retailers. This is no less so on Central Parade. Safety and Security is the number one concern of the Central Parade Business Partnership (CPBP) A key part of their work through the BID (Business Improvement District) over the last 3 years has been to work with the Police and other relevant authorities to address crime and disorder. Their ambition is to ensure the local environment is conducive to trade and that shoppers, residents and families feel safe and secure at all times of day or night. So the Business Partnership were delighted with recent appointment of 2 additional Police Officers in New Addington with a focus on Central Parade. Lucy Butler and Alex Smith started their new role in April 2015. Said Ken Burgess, Chair of the CPBP and BID Board: “The CPBP has had a long- standing and excellent relationship with our local Police colleagues. They attend our Board meetings, take the concerns of the Parade traders seriously, are always quick to respond and keen to work together to share intelligence, address issues and reduce local crime and disorder.” He continued: ”Over the years the Partnership has lobbied strongly for a greater Police presence on the Parade, so we are extremely pleased with this recent increase in the Police complement. This is very welcome and was in part due to pressure by the Business Partnership representing the concerns of traders to the relevant authorities.

24 The New Addington Magazine

Here Helen Mason, Business Adviser to the BID interviews Lucy about her new role: Qu 1. When did you start in this position and what were you doing previously? A. I was appointed here was on 1st April 2015. Prior to this I was in uniform as a Police Constable (PC) covering the South East Croydon area; which includes Fieldway, New Addington, Shirley, Heathfield, and Selsdon & Ballards. This gave me a good understanding of the main local issues. Qu 2. What do you see as the focus of the role? A. The focus is very much on visible patrols across Fieldway & New Addington; in particular at areas needing increased presence including schools and Central Parade. As well as enforcement, my role is to build on existing community relationships, whether with residents or businesses. I also work closely with the Dedicated Ward Officers, often patrolling with them. Qu 3. W hat is a typical day like on the Parade? A. I look at overnight crime trends so I can plan my patrols for the day. This could include visiting victims of crime, vulnerable people, attending community meetings or assisting council colleagues with evictions or ASB prevention.

Find out how to advertise YOUR BUSINESS here - Please call 07946 891705

Qu 4. What have been some of the highlights of the job so far? A. Having the opportunity to spend more time within the community without being taken out to other areas. Qu 5. How do you see your role in relation to the needs of local businesses on the Parade? A. Central Parade has ongoing issues around ASB, shoplifting etc. Working alongside the Dedicated Ward Officers (DWO's) I hope to provide a continued presence and be a familiar face that people can recognise and call upon. Qu 6. How can the Central Parade Business Partnership assist you particularly and the Police in general? A. Any intelligence, however trivial it may seem can assist the police greatly. I urge anyone with information to either pass on to me or my colleagues or CrimeStoppers (0800 555 111). For example, similar information has led to drugs being executed and drug dealers arrested. Lucy and her colleague Alex are actively addressing incidents of anti-social behaviour. Since these

appointments local traders have reported a reduction in anti-social behaviour and petty crime. Ken Burgess concluded: “Word is definitely getting round. The visible presence of additional Police colleagues is having a positive impact on antisocial behaviour along the Parade. This means traders can concentrate on their businesses without distractions and local people can visit shops and cafés with peace of mind.“ The BID wishes Lucy and Alex all the best in their new role and looks forward to them being part of the New Addington community for some time to come. “Members of the public are particularly asked to assist your local Police Officers regarding the recent incidence of off-road bikers around Central Parade. People (including children and the elderly), are at risk of being hit from one of these dangerous off road bikes.

Please contact the Police if you know who is driving these bikes or where they are coming from.” PC Lucy Butler

FOR June

GEMINI

By Astrologer Russell Grant

Travel plans will be cancelled in early June, thanks to a stressful Full Moon. This change of plans is actually a blessing in disguise, only it won't feel like one if you have to pay a stiff cancellation penalty. Breathe deep and know the Universe has bigger and better plans for you. A surprising email or phone call will prompt you to do some research. You may not have any interest in this subject at first, but will develop a real passion for it as your knowledge and know how grows. It will be much easier to make plans and negotiate deals at mid-month. Postpone any heavy decisions until June is halfway through. The New Moon on the 16th prompts you to take a trip for pleasure. If you're not in love, you will find it on your travels. Good luck arrives through your social network near the end of the month giving you more time to spend at home with friends and family. The early days of June bring an end to a source of unearned income. You won't be able to rely on an insurance payment, grant, or scholarship any longer. Fortunately, family is poised to close the gap. Pooling your resources will help you overcome this temporary shortfall. The New Moon on the 16th is ideal for landing a good job. Seek opportunities related to teaching, writing, or travel. A relative will tip you off to a great position before it is officially advertised. Have your CV ready for submission. If you're looking for a place to live, search neighbourhoods that are off the beaten path. You'll find a great home that's actually quite close to your job. The surroundings will be unconventional, but who cares? The price will be great, giving you more money to decorate. If there's anything you enjoy, it's transforming a drab environment into a beautiful showplace. The Full Moon on the 2nd marks the final phase of an intimate relationship. It's important to gain a greater measure of independence this month. You'll garner all sorts of favourable publicity during the first half of June. This is a great time to show off your expertise while updating your skill set. Taking a class will prove enjoyable. It will be much easier to get the information you need from a big bureaucracy on the 11th. Be sure to initiate a creative project at mid-month; this endeavour will bring both fame and acclaim. The New Moon on the 16th is perfect for updating your look. Change your hair or add some up to the minute outfits to your wardrobe. A friend will ask you to accompany them on their holiday towards the end of June. Be sure to accept this generous offer. You'll spend a little more money than usual, but you're overdue for a splurge. The Full Moon on the 2nd reveals a health problem. You might have to consult more than one medical professional to get the proper diagnosis. Be patient. Ask friends for doctor recommendations. Someone who has suffered a similar complaint may have a good suggestion. It may be necessary to cancel some holiday plans in the first half of June, due to unforeseen circumstances. Don't despair. You'll be able to reschedule a much nicer trip later in the season. The New Moon on the 16th prompts you to take up a spiritual practice. This ritual will give you an extra measure of peace and contentment. It will also remind you to spend more time on the activities that make life meaningful. An exciting moneymaking opportunity will arrive towards the end of the month. There will be more money for luxuries as June turns into July. Go ahead and splurge on some beautiful artwork and furnishings for your home. The Full Moon on the 2nd forces you to put your foot down with demanding people. You've been devoting all of your attention to other people's needs and it has been exhausting. Take this opportunity to go on holiday or buy yourself some luxuries. If this causes an argument, so be it. You're not the type who can withstand long periods of deprivation. The first half of June is ideal for getting cosmetic treatments of every description. Change your hairstyle, update your wardrobe, get a cosmetic procedure, or do all three. You'll be very pleased with the results. Working as part of a team will yield terrific ideas at midmonth. The New Moon on the 16th is ideal for networking. Be sure to attend a business conference or party, as you'll make some influential contacts. A surprising opportunity to teach, write, or travel for money will fall into your lap by the end of June.

The Full Moon on the 2nd makes family life stressful. Your relatives aren't happy with certain choices you've made and will be vocal in their disapproval. Fortunately, your personal appeal will be very strong at this time, allowing you to win support from other circles. It may be necessary to revise travel plans on or around the 11th. Be as flexible as possible and prepare to pay a penalty fee for a cancellation. You'll realise a career ambition at mid-month, causing everyone to envy and admire you. The New Moon on the 16th is perfect for changing your look. Your updated image will open new doors for you, both personally and professionally. An unexpected work assignment proves both lucrative and enjoyable. This is your big chance to show off your creative side. This marks a wonderful new phase of your career, which will involve rubbing elbows with prominent business executives. The Full Moon on the 2nd piles more work on your plate. It will be difficult to accomplish everything on your 'to do' list, but try anyway. An authority figure won't be very sympathetic about your plight. Don't let their insensitive attitude spoil the day. Family proves wonderfully understanding and will do their best to make life easier in early June. If a relative offers to babysit or run errands, be sure to accept. Positive feedback about an academic or writing project is music to your ears in mid-June. Go out and celebrate with friends. The New Moon on the 16th prompts you to venture into unfamiliar territory. This is a great time to study a language or take up a musical instrument. A platonic relationship could turn into a passionate romance during the closing days of June. You'll be amazed at how physically compatible you and this friend are. The Full Moon on the 2nd brings an end to a source of income. This situation is incredibly unfair, but you won't be able to reverse it. The best thing you can do is look for a new job. Opportunities related to art, fashion, cosmetics and entertainment are strongly featured. No matter what sort of work you are seeking, it is important to dress professionally on job interviews. If you are offered a position with a low salary in midJune, negotiate for more annual leave. The New Moon on the 16th allows you to pay off a long standing debt. Once you are free of this burden, you can spend more time on creative pursuits. Fashion design, painting and jewellery making are activities that will offer you lots of emotional fulfilment. Your work will attract the attention of a respected artist or critic at the end of June. Be sure to display the fruits of your labour at every opportunity. The Full Moon on the 2nd finds you facing off with a pushy partner. You simply must stand your ground regarding a personal boundary. You're very generous by nature, but you can't continue giving everything away at the expense of your own health. Fortunately, a compassionate mediator will come forward to negotiate a more balanced arrangement. Look for good deals on holiday packages on the 8th, when you'll be able to reserve a nice hotel room for a terrific price. It will be necessary to make some adjustments to your household in mid-June, when family obligations wreak havoc with your sleeping schedule. The New Moon on the 16th is perfect for signing a contract or embarking on a serious romance. Your expert knowledge gives you a greater measure of freedom towards the end of June. Be willing to demand a schedule that works for you, even if it means your colleagues will get second choice. The Full Moon on the 2nd brings an embarrassing secret to light. Go ahead and admit a mistake to your colleagues. They'll respect your honesty. People will seek your professional advice during the first half of June, which is gratifying. If you aren't running a consultancy business, you probably should. The New Moon on the 16th attracts an intellectually stimulating job. Although the pay won't be terribly impressive, you will enjoy developing and discussing ideas with students. This is also a good way to establish your reputation in the academic community. Don't be surprised when your boss unexpectedly offers you ticket to an exclusive event on the 21st. You'll have a wonderful time rubbing elbows with community leaders. Be sure to wear something special to this glittering occasion. If you're not in a relationship, you will meet someone special here. Keep your ears open for someone with a sexy accent. The Full Moon on the 2nd forces you to stop what you're doing and come to a friend's rescue. If their troublesome behaviour has become a trend, you need to re-examine this relationship. You'll be brimming with energy throughout the first half of June. Take this opportunity to get more exercise. Being cooped up in an office building all day will really put a downer on you. Outdoor activities like hiking, biking, walking and running are all great possibilities. The New Moon on the 16th is suffused with romance. If you're single, you will meet someone special at a cultural or educational gathering. Are you in a relationship? Your amour will get a big award or prize and you'll indirectly benefit from their good fortune. You'll have the power to make a cherished dream come true on the 21st. Don't turn down a well intentioned and generous offer of help. This is the Universe's way of nudging you towards victory. The Full Moon on the 2nd prompts you to question certain career choices. You're tired of having no time for a personal life. Fortunately, a rewarding job that allows you to work from home is on the horizon. Be ready to accept such a position on or around the 6th. It will be easy to resolve domestic problems in mid-June, when roommates and relatives have a better sense of their schedules. The 14th is perfect for launching a DIY household repair job. If you're worried about money, the New Moon on the 16th will bring extra funds. Your artistic talent will generate lots more income during the second half of June. Put this money towards improving your existing home or putting a deposit on a place. It's so important for you to have a haven from the professional world. Take this opportunity to create an abode that allows you to rest, relax and rejuvenate.

We are looking forward to an even bigger Carnival weekend of the 13th & 14th June. The Procession on Sunday is FREE to enter so please ask if your school is getting involved, if you have a local business why not advertise in a fun way? Joining the Carnival on the Saturday afternoon between 124pm are PlayPlace delivering the Big Lunch with lots of free activities for young people to get involved with. Why not bring a picnic and come and join in.

– if it’s a ‘one off’ please don’t be too harsh and if the early morning noise does get too much and knocking to ask politely doesn’t work – here’s the out of hours Council number to ring: 0208 760 5483 or report using the Council’s My Account app. Please remember the Octagon Hub is open every Tuesday and Friday for advice and signposting, job club on Tuesday mornings, for faxing, scanning and printing services also for a small charge to keep the building running. All the best till June

As the sun shines we open our windows, leave doors ajar and sometimes forget; even if you go upstairs remember to pull these closed – why invite burglars? Same with your car – how many of us ladies have the driver and passenger side windows open and leave our handbag on the seat? As a community please also respect others when having a BBQ or hosting a party. Evening BBQ’s when everyone’s washing is in causes less arguments unless you know your neighbours well or are happy to approach and speak with them. To those party-hard animals out there, please turn it down at 11pm and ask your guests to be kind to your neighbours when leaving. To all of us who hear the noise of a party 30 The New Addington Magazine

What’s on your mind? Topic: The older generation... Guest: John Steel from Steel Gym, in New Addington

Do you want to share your thoughts on this page? If you have a subject that is dear to your heart and would like to share your views, please email me for more informtaion. michelle@newaddingtonmagazine.co.uk Just think ... this could be your story next month. I've always felt an affiliation to the older generation. I relate more to the era they come from more so than I do to the younger generation now and the people I tend to cross paths with. So because of this I've always felt apathy towards old people and have always had it in my mind to partake in some kind of community work that might benefit people who are older, able bodied but may feel isolated from society because of their age. Things really hit home lately during 2 hospital visits. I was in hospital having a tumour removed from my neck and a serious post op infection saw me back in hospital for 3 days in a High Dependency Unit during which my attention was again drawn towards the older generation. I noticed that come visiting hours a vast majority of the older people in the wards surrounding me were left alone and didn't have any visitors so I reached out to them with offers of company, newspapers and offering to make visits to the coffee/tea machine. A week after I was discharged I was back on a hospital ward, this time visiting my dad who had just had heart surgery.

I found the same thing occurring, whilst my dad had 4-5 visitors sitting around him at visiting times the other patients were alone, just them sitting up looking in our direction hoping to soak up some of the family atmosphere that was surrounding my dad. So I started off with a few small gestures like making sure I brought daily newspapers in for everyone and not just my dad. After posting a Facebook status about my experience I had my attention brought to a local group called Energetic and Wise and I arranged a meeting at the gym with the 2 ladies that ran the group. I went to one of their local meetings and saw how everything is run and seeing as they are having a day trip to Hastings in June I offered to cover the cost of all the pensioners lunches so they had no cost to cover and the day was completely free. Also a local hairdresser called Laura Geary contacted me and suggested we organise a 'Pamper Day' where OAP's can get their hair done by professional stylists for free. And at the moment the gym is going to buy a giant hamper of shopping to

lay on a table the next time Energetic and Wise hosts a free meal for all the OAP's and people will be allowed to pick what they want from it free of charge. This was a great success with lots of positive feebdack.

We intend on continuing to work closely with Energetic and Wise to inject some kind of enthusiasm and something to look forward to for any elderly people in the local area that may feel secluded or lonely so hopefully many more projects in the future. We are also looking towards people to sponsor or donate to Energetic and Wise anything that they think might be beneficial to these older people that clearly should still be able to have a healthy social life despite being old. We hope this will bring

a lot more of the elderly people in the community together. John Steel

ADDINGTON HIGH SCHOOL Ambition, Harmony, Success

London’s most improved school? Dear Friends, I believe we are now London’s fastest improving Secondary school. While a lot of work remains to be done to create an outstanding school, we are well on the way. Only six months ago, when I became the Headteacher, this school was widely regarded to still be at the inadequate standard of the predecessor school. Now, thanks to the support of our parents, the very strong desire of the students to be successful and the dedicated and extensive efforts of all of the staff and governors, we have an Ofsted report that clearly reflects the tremendous improvements that we have so far secured. Importantly, the report demonstrates that we are doing everything in our power to rapidly improve student outcomes, and it shows that inspectors agree that the actions we have taken in the first six months will continue to improve results in the years ahead. As we move forward, please be assured that we will never stop doing what we believe is right, so that we can instil personal motivation, ambition, a thirst for learning and a passion for success in each and every student in our care. A full copy of the report is now available on our school website. Some of the key phrases in the report say that:  The leadership of the new Headteacher has transformed the school.  Teaching is improving rapidly; leadership and management are good at all levels in the school. Staff and student morale is high. Capacity to improve further is strong.  There is a strong embedded culture of ambition and aspiration.  Leaders at all levels in the school are united in their determination to do their best for the students. There is a strong sense of moral purpose to develop the highest quality teaching.  Middle leaders are dynamic and highly motivated.  The behaviour of students is good. There is a calm purposeful atmosphere in the school.  Students feel listened to and valued. They are proud of their school.  The leadership of the new Headteacher, improvements in teaching and new reliable systems for tracking students’ progress have enabled students’ achievement to rise rapidly.  The most able students are now making better progress. Addington High School has a very bright future. It is a safe and secure school where students are making very fast progress. If you are considering having your child join us or transfer into Year 7, 8 or 9, then I would like to invite you to visit our rapidly improving school. You and your child can experience a school assembly, a tour of lessons with existing students and a Q&A session with me. Mr M Giles Headteacher Please contact Sue Hickmott (01689 842545 – Extension 108) to arrange a personalised visit of the school.
