New Addington Established 2010
New Addington Pathfinders Group is made up of local residents who are committed to making a difference in the area. We started from a home office initiative and we were, and still are volunteers. We now fund ourselves through applying for grants, hiring out the Hub to local groups and Churches and offering printing, faxing, laminating and other services for a small fee. We aim to help make things better throughout the whole of New Addington whether you live, work or learn here. We promote the concept of being good neighbours and consult with people about community cohesion including; anti-social behaviour, nuisance noise, cleanliness, poverty and employability.
What have we done? Promoted the ‘Buddy Leaflet’ – aided by our partners the London Fire Brigade and Croydon Drop-In young people have received tips for a safe night out
Lights Out – remembering the 100 year Great War this 4th August, a simple but poignant service was held on the Market Square with Huw Duffield from the Salvation Army leading the service, and poems read by Councillor Simon Hall, ex- serviceman and Royal British Legion member Tony Pearson and Captain Matt Spencer of the Salvation Army. Poppy Planting – well, hopefully we will see a beautiful display of red Flanders Field poppies next year. Sadly despite the best
efforts of those who took part planting the approx. 60,000 poppy seeds … not one poppy has yet appeared! Regeneration of Central Parade – We worked closely with the Council and Assemble Design Team to make as many residents aware of the choices available within the remit of the funding. We are looking forward to further improvements and being a part of the Steering Group to help put forward the community’s views. This is just a snapshot of the projects New Addington Pathfinders have been, and still are involved in. We will work with anyone who wants what we all want – the best for New Addington! If you want to find out more, join us on our busy Facebook page - search for New Addington Pathfinders (NAP) where you can keep up to date with what’s going on locally, and future projects on a page where the residents are all communityminded like us.
Fire Safety Challenge – the youth Pathfinders team have won the interBorough challenge twice now! Hoping for our third victory this year though it sounds like there may be more competition! Silver Sunday – a celebration of our older generation. Young people from Rowdown School joined with the Pop-In family and had a good old sing-along with Cockney entertainer Gordon Bennett Mosaic Project – funded through Croydon Council’s All Ages project, young and old designed and produced the mosaic which now has pride of place by the 2 new benches outside the Octagon Hub. The New Addington Business Improvement District BID The BID has several other projects in the planning stage as part of the 5 year BID business plan.
The New Addington Business Improvement District (BID) is half way through its second year. Voted for by the 66 businesses in Central Parade, Ken Burgess, Chair, CPBP Salcot Crescent and Chertsey Crescent in and New Addington BID December 2012, and started in February 2013, the BID is run by the Central Parade Business Partnership (CPBP); the long-recognised voice of business interests and concerns in New Addington. A BID is an agreement where business rate payers in a local area agree to pay a small extra annual contribution to a central fund, usually for 5 years. This money is used by the businesses to fund projects, services and events to improve the local area. Through legal agreements, the BID Board also makes sure that the Council, Police and other services maintain their services within the area. Says Helen Mason, Business Adviser to the BID; “The impact of the BID is gradually becoming evident. The CPBP has always had a reputation for speaking up for New Addington businesses and getting things done. The BID has given the partnership more certainty. The guaranteed annual funding from the BID levy helps CPBP to budget and plan projects and improvements more effectively.”
• developed a project to help individual businesses assess and reduce their service costs • begun the replacement and upgrade of stairwell lighting • supported the events programme in the Market Square • participated in Small Business Saturday to encourage residents to shop locally • secured participation in the GLA’s London Foodsave programme for Central Parade food businesses (cafes, take-aways, market stalls and retailers) to help them reduce their business costs by reducing their food waste • worked with the Council and contractors to negotiate a better residents’ refuse collection. This is intended to reduce unsightly fly tipping on the Parade.
Helen continues; “The average BID levy for participating businesses works out at less than £7 per week. This raises approximately £20,000 each year. This funding is overseen by the partnership and spent on behalf of the businesses on projects and improvements that address safety and security, cleanliness and make Central Parade welcoming and attractive for local people to shop. The fact that over 93% of the businesses paid their BID dues in the first year shows that the concept works” Ken Burgess, a local trader and Chair of the CPBP BID Board says; “The BID continues to support the Central Parade Partnership’s mission to be a voice for local businesses and a force to make the Central Parade area better for traders and residents alike. Being part of a nationally recognised high street scheme, the BID has given us more credibility with partners and the possibility of joining national and regional programmes to benefit our local traders. The BID is more equitable; every business is required to contribute proportionally to the BID pot; as dictated by their annual business rates.” For more information on the BID go to: www.bidcpbp.co.uk
In the first 18 months of the BID the Central Parade District Partnership has: • continued to represent the interests of Central Parade businesses on planning and parking issues • arranged and covered the cost of the Christmas lights • instigated a regular programme of stairwell cleansing Drop your brand onto 8,200 door mats with the The New Addington Magazine

I also like the ‘Library in your living room’ which are the online resources available to all library users in particular the audio books and the audio downloads, which I listen to in the car with my daughter on our way to school. The activities in the library are great fun to watch too, particularly the new under five story and songtime on Friday mornings. Neighbourhood
Watch What is the purpose of neighbourhood watch? It is about building a community spirit among your neighbours, to look out for each other and to help the more vulnerable in the community. It is also, of course, about helping to prevent crime by making people more aware of crime prevention measures and how they can assist the police by being aware of potential criminal activity and knowing how to report it.
So how does it work? Croydon Borough Neighbourhood Watch Association (CBNWA) covers the whole borough of Croydon. A “Watch” area can be a road, part of a road, a block of flats etc. where one person acts as a Co-ordinator. The role of the Coordinator is to act as a focal point and keep those in their watch informed of crime prevention measures, current scams and other criminal activity notified to them by CBNWA or police. To help in this, CBNWA produce a newsletter 3 times a year which the coordinator will deliver to those households in their watch. Some coordinators email those in their watch with the newsletter - this helps to save us money. In addition a weekly update is emailed to coordinators by CBNWA. This gives the latest information which the coordinator can disseminate as appropriate. What are the benefits of being in a neighbourhood watch? The main benefit is the building of a community spirit, getting to know your neighbours, keeping an eye open for them, particularly the elderly and more vulnerable ones. Being informed of all the latest scams, bogus caller activity, crime prevention measures etc. is a bonus for those in a watch. In addition a watch will also be able to have neighbourhood watch signs displayed on lamp posts at either end of their watch area (or some suitable location) - a reminder to the criminal that he is in an area where people will be looking out for one another. Some insurance companies will give a discount on house insurance to those in a watch area. Appropriate NW stickers are also available to those in a watch to display in a window near their door – e.g. “No Cold Callers”
For an information pack and to register your interest, contact the Neighbourhood Watch Manager – Katie Moore – on 020 8555 1200 extension 37637
You can also email CBNWA at nhw@cbnwa.com Or write to Croydon Borough Neighbourhood Watch Association Neighbourhood Watch Office c/o Croydon Fire Station, 90, Old Town, Croydon CR0 1AR Space for this article does not permit providing information on crime prevention measures. Feature Story
Malachi’s Only Wish His Story
Hi my name is Malachi. I am 10 years old and I have Cerebral Palsy. I was delivered by emergency c-section 6 weeks early after suffering fetal distress whilst in my mum’s tummy. I weighed 4lb 7oz and they put me in an incubator to stabilise my breathing overnight and then kept me in hospital for over two weeks to put on weight. I was eventually diagnosed at 18 months with Spastic Diplegia because I wasn’t reaching the normal milestones expected. I am unable to stand alone and cannot walk without the aid of my walking frame or tripod sticks and I need my wheelchair for longer distances. My condition causes the muscles in my legs to be very tight, which is known as spasticity. I need help from my family all the time to move from sitting to standing or transferring to the toilet or shower, which is a real struggle. I do daily exercises to ease the intense tightness and spasticity in my muscles which become tighter as I grow. I have always wished I could run or even walk unaided around the playground to play football with my friends instead of being the referee in a wheelchair or the boy
sitting on the side lines watching with tears in my eyes and an aching heart. There is, however, the chance of a life changing operation carried out by Dr. Park at St. Louis Hospital in America – an operation called SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy). To put this simply, this is an operation done by making a small incision at the lower back and testing the nerves individually by using electrical currents, which then shows which nerves are sending ‘faulty’ signals from my brain to my muscles to cause the spasticity. The ‘faulty’ ones are then carefully cut and the spasticity disappears.

Why you should love local advertising It was the advertising legend David Ogilvy who said, “When I write an advertisement, I don’t want you to tell me that you find it creative. I want you to find it so interesting that you buy the product.” If you’re advertising in a local publication like this your aim should be to increase sales. If you build an abundance of goodwill too that’s wonderful but don’t lose sight of the fact that sales and plenty of them are the lifeblood of your business. I’ve spent many years in advertising and can tell you from experience that local publications provide a powerful, cost effective channel through which to engage a local audience. You can attract many new customers for a modest outlay. If, despite your very best efforts, your advert fails to work there isn’t such a big dent in your budget to remind you.
Here’s what it takes to write a successful advert in a local publication.
to use images, make sure they’re good quality and caption them.
· Make a tempting special offer - limited to a number of readers, with a close date to encourage early responses.
· Don’t forget your contact details. If you want readers visiting your website, give them a positive taster of what they’ll find... download invaluable top tips... get your free voucher... discover what other local customers have said about our restaurant, and so on.
your advert checking it for spelling · Your headline has to stop the reader · Edit mistakes and enlist the services of a in their tracks before they turn the page. Can you promise a benefit, for example, “Reduce your time spent on administration by 75%” has more impact than “Outsource your administration”.
· What about the body of your advert? Focus on 3-6 compelling benefits underpinned with genuine testimonial from a delighted customer. Is there one big promise your advert can communicate? For example do you offer an unbeatable price guarantee... an experience that’s out of this world.... free delivery... products and services that readers would be hard pushed to find elsewhere?
· Include your awards, accreditations and qualifications too - they reinforce your credibility and expertise. If you’re going
professional designer. You want your advert to look good too. It’s not just about the words. I’ll conclude with a few words from another advertising sage, Raymond Rubicam. He believed that impact was at the heart of a successful advert defining it thus...
is that quality “inImpact an advertisement which strikes suddenly against the readers’ indifference and enlivens their mind to receive your sales message.

Overdrafts By Martin Lewis
Overdrafts are a debt like any other, if you don’t manage it, it will spiral out of control. While there are methods to cut the cost, they’re often far less talked about than the common techniques for cutting credit card bills – but are just as important. In a nutshell your aim should be to cut the cost and repay what you owe. Here’s my tips on how… Overdrafts are a debt like any other, if you don’t manage it, it will spiral out of control. While there are methods to cut the cost, they’re often far less talked about than the common techniques for cutting credit card bills – but are just as important. In a nutshell your aim should be to cut the cost and repay what you owe. Here’s my tips on how…
Get paid £100 to take a free overdraft. There are two big players who offer decent deals for those with overdrafts who switch account. Though you’ll need to pass their credit score. Move to www.firstdirect.com, which is the no. 1 rated bank for customer service (92% of my web users rated it ‘great’) and you get an ongoing £250 overdraft. Crucially it also gives you £100 sign up bonus, which you should put straight towards your debt. To get it you’ll need to pay in your salary or income, which must be at least £1,000 a month. Alternatively for a potentially larger 0% overdraft there’s the www.nationwide.co.uk FlexDirect account. Yet it only gives you this overdraft for the first year, so ensure you use that time to clear the debt or afterwards it’s 50p a day.
Shift your overdraft to a 31 month 0% card. While you may have heard of credit card debt shifting deals called balance transfers, a few cards also offer a ‘money transfer’ where it simply pays cash into your bank account, so you can then pay off your overdraft, meaning you then owe it instead. This is a good option if you’ve a bigger overdraft and will need more than a year to repay it. My top pick card right now is www.mbna.co.uk, which lets accepted customers do it at 0% for 31 months for a oneoff 4% fee (it’s just 2.88% for normal balance transfers). However, it’s credit score dependent, so use the www. mse.me/eligibility tool which will show you which money transfer cards you’ve the best chance of getting. 22 The New Addington Magazine
If you are doing a money transfer do follow these golden rules: a) Don’t assume all cards do this, most charge a fortune. b) Always repay the monthly minimum or you’ll lose the 0% deal. c) Plan to clear by the end of the 0% period or it jumps to the full rate - with MBNA that’s 22.9% rep APR. d) If you’re unsure of what you’re doing use the step-bystep help in www.mse.me/moneytransfers.
Manage your way back into credit. Cutting the cost of your overdraft isn’t the end game, you should aim to always be in credit (or at least always within your overdraft when there’s no cost). To help do ask companies you pay to shift direct debits to near the end of your working month. If paid on the 25th, aim for the 20th. This artificially boosts your balance so you’re in the red less - but don’t spend the cash. Moving bill dates cuts fees, but won’t tackle the overdraft. So sit down and do a budget to find out where you can cut back. Organise incoming cash and move it into bill pots at the start of the month so you’re not tempted to spend unnecessarily, it’s called piggybanking. Use this technique to make payments - eg, £100 a month - to your overdraft, treating it like any other bill. Use my free automated budget planner to help at www.budgetbrain.com.
Use savings (if you’ve any). Having overdrafts and savings isn’t sensible. Think about it: a £1,000 overdraft at £20 a month equals £240 a year, but the same in easy access savings, after tax, earns a paltry £13 at best. So repay debt with savings and you’re £229 per £1,000 up each year. Once the overdraft’s paid off, you can save more freely. You may think: “But I’ll have no savings if the boiler packs up or the roof falls in.” True, but in an emergency, access the overdraft you’ve paid off

again and you’ll be no worse off. To beat the fear of being without savings, read www.mse.me/repaydebts.
Poor credit? Get 0% respite from bank charges. The options above won’t help if your score’s poor, but there is one card that offers 0% on spending until October even for those with a poor credit history. The www.luma.co.uk card accepts some with CCJs or defaults over a year old to get it. Now as this isn’t a debt shifting card, you have to play clever and be disciplined to take advantage of it for reducing overdrafts. The technique is you do your normal, budgeted, day-to-day spending on the card up to the credit limit, instead of from your bank account. This builds up the debt on the card, but allows your overdraft to be repaid by your income. Do ensure you can make monthly repayments to clear the card before the 0% ends though or the rate jumps to 34.9% representative APR.
“I got £1,560 in unfair bank charges back.” If you have an overdraft the nightmare scenario is exceeding your limits and getting stung with bank charges – these transaction fees can be £6 per day or up to £25 per transaction. Get it wrong and they can add up to £100s or £1,000s a year. Do everything you can to avoid them and communicate with the bank if there’s no solution. However, if you are or have been hit, do remember reports of the death of unfair bank charges reclaiming have been exaggerated. Admittedly now it’s mainly for those where charges put you into financial hardship, yet some do get money back, Alice emailed me to say: “I sent your template... a day later the bank refunded £1,560. Thanks.” For full help and template letters on how to reclaim bank charges for free see www.mse.me/bankcharges.

Legal Eagle Column Major Changes to Child Maintenance For many years the Child Support Agency (CSA) has dealt with the issue of child maintenance between parents. Many parents over the years have been highly critical of the CSA and how it operates and it has been accused of being inadequate, secretive (in relation to how it calculates maintenance) and unfair. However, the CSA is now to be abolished so all is about to change. Here’s what you need to know. What will replace the CSA? The CSA will be replaced by a new entity called Child Maintenance Service (CMS), a name that must have taken ministers years to dream up!
What will change? This is not only a name change, there are also new rules being implemented too. Under the new rules, the parent who doesn’t live with the child will now have to pay a 20% fee on their payments for using the service and the other parent will lose 4% of the money they receive. A non-resident parent using the CMS will therefore pay £20 on top of every £100 of child support, while the parent living with the child will only get £96 of that sum. There will also be a £20 charge levied by the CMS for set-up costs.
When will these changes happen? Parents who currently use the CSA will receive letters anytime between now and 2017 explaining the changes and when they will be implemented in relation their case. When parents receive these letters they will be told that there case with the CSA will be closed in 6 months time. Parents will then have the choice to either move over to the CSM or deal with each directly.
New parents who want to use the service will now have to go to the CSM where they will be dealt with under the new rules.
Can I avoid the fees? The short answer is yes and government is actually encouraging this. Parents can therefore avoid the charges by agreeing to pay each other directly, bypassing the state-run system. This means that you could either avoid the CSM altogether by agreeing the amount to pay and then paying directly or simply use the CSM to calculate the amount to be paid and then pay directly.
What about existing arrears? If arrears have built up whilst a case was with the CSA and the parents choose to use the CSM, the arrears will still stand and can be enforced. This will also be the case where parents decide to come to a family-based arrangement.
Are there any changes to how maintenance is calculated? Yes the formula for calculating maintenance is also changing. For those that earn less than £800 gross weekly income it will be: 12% of gross income
Drop your brand onto 8,200 door mats with the The New Addington Magazine
Dean Dunham for one child, 16% gross income for two children and 19% gross income for three or more children. For those that earn more than £800 gross weekly income it will be: 12% gross income for the first £800 and 9% of the gross income on the remainder, 16% of gross income on the first £800 and 12% of gross income on the remainder for two children and 19% of gross income for the first £800 of gross income and 15% of the gross income on the remainder for three or more children. Until the changes are implemented the old CSA basis of calculation will continue, namely: 15% of net income for one child, 20% for two children, 25% for three or more children with a cap for net income of £104,000 per annum.
Are the changes a good idea? There is no doubt about it changes needed to be made to the CSA and they needed to be drastic. However, the last thing that was needed was for parents to be penalised for using the service, I find that remarkable. That’s not to say that it is not a good idea to encourage separated parents to be amicable with each other but the reality is that on many occasions this is just not possible. Child support should be all about the needs and best interests of the child, not another back door tax for the government.

Halloween A yearly celebration, Halloween is observed in many countries on the 31st October which is the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. Countries who embrace this tradition include the United Kingdom, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Halloween has been adopted by children and families as a time to join their communities in activities such as costume parties, trick or treating, apple bobbing and the carving of pumpkins to leave as lanterns in windows and porches. Most homeowners now know to stock up on a pile of sweeties and other goodies or face an evening of hiding in a darkened room behind the sofa to avoid being caught by scary little ones!
Interesting facts: • The word Halloween dates to about 1745. • Trick or treating became firmly established after Walt Disney portrayed it in the cartoon of the same name.

Household
Tips Guinea Smelly Pig
Bins...
Despite being technically a rodent, the guinea pig has gained widespread popularity in the Western world as a household pet. With their docile natures and seeming enjoyment of handling and care, this makes an ideal little pet for children who are happy to gently play and entertain these furry creatures.
There’s nothing worse than keeping the outside of your kitchen bin nice and shiny and then lifting the lid and being hit by fumes... Simply pop a tumble dryer sheet at the bottom of the bin to kee it smelling fresh... :)
Domestic guinea pigs bond and recognize other guinea pigs and it is for this reason that they should be kept in same-sex pairs. In contrast to hamsters, guinea pigs have developed a different biological rhythm from those living in the wild and tend to have longer periods of play interspersed with shorter bouts of sleep. This makes them great pets for those who prefer not to be nocturnal! Guinea pigs are poor climbers, although they can navigate small obstacles. They also startle very easily so care should be taken not to scare them. 28 The New Addington Magazine

Stand firm against peer pressure in the opening days of October. Your nearest and dearest are trying to get you to embrace conventional wisdom, but that doesn't have much appeal for you. Going against the grain has always been your style. A Lunar Eclipse on the 8th brings an abrupt end to a source of income. In a strange way, this will be liberating. Once you break free of an oppressive employer, you'll find a more meaningful way to earn a living. Opportunities related to art, diplomacy and advertising will be especially attractive. A Solar Eclipse on the 23rd allows you to make money from your expertise. Putting your creative talent to work will be stimulating. It looks like you'll be working alongside some extremely accomplished people, too. The end of October ends on a definite high note. Your star is on the rise; enjoy the ride. ADDINGTON HIGH SCHOOL Ambition, Harmony, Success
A message to families with Primary School children in Year 6 from the new Headteacher
Dear Parents and Carers Every year, and for at least the last four years, more parents and carers who live in New Addington have sent their Year 6 children to a High School or Academy outside of the area than those who have sent their children to our school. They’ve done this each year for one simple reason – Addington High School had a reputation as not being worthy of selection. It was considered as being a failing school. It’s time for that reputation to change. One year ago, Addington High School closed and then re-opened (with the same name) as an Academy in the Ravens Wood Learning Trust. In the last year, this ‘new’ school has made significant progress. Since becoming its Headteacher a few weeks ago, I have been hugely impressed by the high standards of focused learning that takes place here. I have been bowled over by the positive way in which our students behave and show respect. From day one I’ve delivered a very clear message to our staff, students and parents. It is that every one of us must take ownership of ambition and raise our expectations of the success we can achieve, both individually and as a community. I insist that this is not a school where compliancy is tolerated. This is a school that is totally focused on ensuring that every child is supported and challenged to deliver outstanding personal progress. Here and now, I’m not asking you to choose our school. I am, however, asking you to come and visit us and to see for yourself just why I believe you must consider us as your school of choice for September 2015. The last few weeks have been the most enjoyable and privileged of my professional life. To be the Headteacher of Addington High School, and have the chance to lead it forward to become outstanding, is nothing less than an honour. I genuinely believe that if you and your child come and meet me, my staff and our students, you’ll understand why I feel that way. We are all lucky that the Borough of Croydon has so many fantastic schools for each family to choose from. Addington High School is ready to take its place as one of those schools. I look forward to welcoming you to our school. Mr M Giles Headteacher
