Get Paid for Doing the Things You Love!

- A Little Help May Go a Long Way - Take Time to Spend Time

- recipe : caesar dressing - The Norfolk Hotel

Letter from the Editor In this life, we were born to have friends... to be part of a family. We were not created to be alone. We need to feel that we belong somewhere, needed by people who matter to us, loved by them and to give love back. But often, relationships are not that simple. Most times, it’s easier, less difficult and painful for us to get a pet. But even the unconditional love of a faithful animal or some say... a man’s best friend, will not be able to satisfy the need for us to build healthy relationships with other human beings. But the fact is, in relationships... frictions DO happen! It doesn’t mean that you don’t love each other but sometimes our different characters and natures collide. We expose our hearts in close relationships, that’s why we need to protect our hearts and be consistent internally. Because we may get hurt! So, be careful who you choose to have a relationship with. Some friendships may bring heaven into your life and some hell! But no matter what happens around you, other people can be inconsistent in their thinking and emotions, but we must be consistent. If not our hearts will be torn in so many different ways and we will not be able to function properly. When our hearts are contaminated, we will make wrong and emotional decisions that we’ll regret for the rest of our lives. We will think wrong thing and feel wrong things! But because we want to have close relationships with them, we cannot over protect ourselves from them. We need to learn to trust them even if we can get hurt at times. But don’t be foolish, stay on guard and protect your heart! Live your life soberly because the safety and welfare of other people’s lives, such as that of your spouse, children, parents and close friends are at stake!!! BE CONSISTENT IN LIVING OUR LIVES! Not sure why I wrote this, but I hope it speaks to someone... Hope you enjoy this edition’s articles and please write to me and let me know your thoughts. Cheers, Ben Irawan Editor of NEW CITY Magazine editor@newcitymagazine.com

Dear Editor, To clarify the ‘Triangle of Life’ theory is controversial in what to do during an earthquake, but I do applaud you for highlighting earthquake risk in Australia - which is rather low! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triangle_of_Life. Sticky Notes on the mirror: The Art of Positive Self Talk A friend of mine asked a funny question the other day: If you were to write an autobiography, what would you call it?

It spurned a lively and highly amusing conversation, but genuinely got us all thinking. Some took it as an opportunity to really think about what their life means, what they want their contribution and legacy to be. Some people put their mantra into title form. Others just found funny statements they liked. “I told you I would slap you if you said that again” was one. “The muffin interjection” was another one that came from a friend whose brightest ideas always struck at moments when he had a mouthful of muffin and someone else was talking. Mine, I think, would be called “Sticky notes on the mirror.” But why ‘sticky notes on the mirror?’ Have you ever put a bit too much pressure on yourself, found it hard to relax or had too much on your plate? Are constantly multi-tasking? Yep. That’s me down to a tee. I jokingly call myself ‘a bit of a Type A person.’ I had to have High Distinctions on everything at University. I always have a million projects on the go. I like to live life fast and have done so for as long as I can remember. People say “Stop and smell the roses.” I say “What roses? Oh! You mean the coloured blur I passed five minutes ago? Well I am not going back now. Too late.” Then at age 22 I had my first patch of burnout. Three jobs, uni course, not enough sleep, a ten year history of chronic pain and too much self-inflicted pressure got to me. I didn’t learn the lesson though and five years later I hit patch number two.

I am healthy now but still a multi-tasker. My desk is covered in sticky notes. “Don’t forget this.” “Do that.” But over the course of my 20’s, I have learned that the most important things in life aren’t always on the task list. I have also noticed that of all the information that goes into our heads any given day, the things we seem to remember most easily are where we have failed or need to improve. It’s a thing called self talk and some of us need to work on it so we can stay physically and mentally on top of our game. So now my desk is not the only thing covered in sticky notes. My mirror is too. Only these ones say things like “Roses exist. Don’t forget to stop and smell them.” “Have FUN sometime today” and “There is no point banging your head against a wall trying to turn it into a door. Know when to move on.” These are things that I have to remind myself.

If there is one thing that we really do have to watch, it’s our self talk. If we allow the pressure of negative thinking and high expectations to build up in our brains, we can do damage not only to our self esteem but also to our bodies. (High blood pressure, low energy levels and fatigue to name a few). Is there something you need to remind yourself of? Go whack a sticky note on your (or somebody else’s) mirror. Remind yourself of what is important. (CH)

But I have been known to whack the odd sticky note on someone else’s mirror. Sometimes it’s been things like “Good morning good looking!” for a friend who struggles with body image. Or “This too is temporary. The sun WILL come out” for a friend who was going through depression.

Get Paid for Doing the Things You Love! Do you hate your job? Is it a drag just to get up and go to work every day? Then it’s time for a change. We all ask the inevitable question of ‘Okay, so what do I do?’ I say to you that your gift is your wealth. To discover this I believe that we need to ask ourselves a few important questions first. • What do you enjoy doing? • What skills do you have? • What are you passionate about? • What do you do choose to do when you have time to yourself? (Watching television does not count). • How can you develop what you love to do more?

What you and I have is what we need to work with. If we look at people who are successful in business and in their chosen field we will see that they have taken what they are gifted in, what they love to do and developed it. Can you imagine doing what you love to do and getting paid to do it? It’s possible. Let’s say for example that your passion and gifting lies in the area of computers and IT work. How can you develop that more and provide a service different from all the rest?

Here’s some other ideas to get you thinking about what you may be able to do with this skill – - Offer a personal one on one basic computer skills course in the comfort of people’s own homes. - Speak to your local library, TAFE, Probus group, and Senior Citizen’s Centre about running a class for pensioners. - If you enjoy fixing computers then why not advertise a mobile repair service? -Contract yourself out to businesses and community groups to educate certain groups in various computer skills. Is your passion music and playing an instrument? Music classes are expensive at music schools etc. If you have the necessary skill and passion why not teach music theory or individual lessons on your chosen instrument? What about tuition in songwriting, small children’s introduction to music, or improvisation, or whatever slant your skills will take you. Start a young voices or older voices community choir or an orchestra or band. Age is not really a factor here. If you have a heart to do something and set your mind on it then why not? You can be fifteen or fifty, it matters not. We don’t have to quit our job tomorrow, but chip away at developing your skills and talents until you can begin to offer your own services to the community in which you live doing what you love to do, getting paid for it, and looking forward to work each day! Real Prosperity and Your Ideal Life. Describe your ideal 24 hours- what would you be doing and who would you be doing it with?

The answer to that question determines what’s really important to you. How often do you live your ideal day? If you are not experiencing parts of your ideal life on a regular basis, perhaps it is time for a re-evaluation. Last issue we suggested that real prosperity should be redefined as “peace, wholeness and well-being in every area of life.” It takes courage and perseverance to make changes to our lives but the end result will be well worth it. There is an old saying- Without vision, the people perish and without a vision for your ideal life you will definitely not move forward towards it. There is something powerful about writing down a vision for what you want to accomplish. Next issue we will discuss the 7areas of life that make up real prosperity.

Tips on How to Boost Your Energy

You probably don’t really think about your energy levels until you experience that post lunch time “Oh my gosh, how on earth am I going to stay awake until knock off time?” slump. We have all experienced lack of energy and lethargy. It’s the brain fuzz at the end of the day. It’s thing that drives us all to the coffee cart mid afternoon when everyone is falling asleep at their desks or dreaming of holidays in the Bahamas’ while the board meeting roles on. It’s a pain in the bum really. So I am coming to your rescue.

Here are a few tips on how to boost your energy.

We are going to talk about BMR. “What is BMR,” you may ask? It is your Basal Metabolic Rate.

It is the energy your body uses to carry out normal functions including digestion, breathing or just sitting at your desk at work. It is how much energy you expend during an average day. This varies depending on how active you are, how much exercise you do, whether you take the elevator or the lift, park your car close or far away from the door. These are the things that determine how much energy you use during your average day.

How do you work out your BMR then?

How do you know how many kilocalories or kilojoules you are burning during your average day? (Don’t just read. Grab a pen and a calculator. We are doing this now.)

Females aged between 18 and 30 Here is your formula for working it all out: ‘14.7 times your weight in kilos plus 496.’ Here is an example. I am in this age group and weigh 60 kilograms. So my formula is 14.7 x 60 = 882. We add the 496 and arrive at my BMR in kilo-calories per day which is 1378.

Males aged 18 to 30 - The formula is the same just with a few different numbers: ‘15.3 times your weight in kilograms plus 679.’ So a male in this age group who weighs 75 kilograms would have a formula like this. 15.3 x 75 + 679 = 1826. Okay now we will look at ages 30 to 60. For a woman, it’s ‘8.7 times weight plus 829.’ For the 30 to 60 year old male it is ’11.6 times weight plus 879.’ Stereotypically, males use more kilo-calories and energy than us ladies because the higher the amount of muscle or lean body mass a person has, the higher the BMR. Just in case you are wondering, one kilocalorie is 4.2 kilojoules. So I have a can of tuna in my hand. It says on the back of the pack that it gives 395KJ of energy. Divide that by 4.2 and you arrive at the Kilocalorie count of 94. In your common fitness magazines, recipe books and food packaging, it will give you calories and kilojoules. This is a little misleading as they are actually referring to kilocalories and kilojoules. It’s just packaging shorthand. Now we know how much our BMR is and how many kilocalories we need to eat in a day to survive. So what do we do with this information? If you want to lose weight, you must expend more energy than you are taking in. If you want to gain weight, it’s vice versa. Easy!

HOW CLEVER ARE YOU???

Let’s find out just how clever you really are! Ready? GO!!! Question 1:

You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?

Question 2: If you are feeling the afternoon brain fuzz, this could be a case of not eating as much as your body requires. This is why we need to know about all the BMR stuff. Or it could be a lack of nutritious, long term energy yielding foods in your diet.

If you overtake the last person, then you are the second to last person!

Feeling the fuzz? Have an apple, some almonds and a bottle of water close at hand when you are at work. Water is absolutely, incredibly vital! We need about 2 to 3 litres a day to meet our body’s requirements. Once again this depends on how active you are. More active, more water. I know you have probably heard this before, but have you drunk the adequate amount today? Probably not, hey. You may end up spending half the day running to the bathroom but your body will thank you for it. I promise. Why apples? They are rumoured to be a better ‘wake me up’ than coffee. They are high in anti-oxidants which are stimulants. Sure coffee has anti-oxidants but apples have more. And apples have fibre. And fibre is your friend. Almonds are high in protein, fibre and vitamin B. Speaking of which… The next thing that may help boost the energy stores is the good old vitamin B group. Some signs of Vitamin B Group deficiency include fatigue, mood changes such as depression and others, diarrhoea and some mild skin disorders. Not very appealing hey? To top up your B stores you can eat lots of whole-grains, lean meats, fish, poultry, banana’s, avocado’s, peas and lentils. Otherwise, under professional supervision, you can take a B Group Vitamin supplement. B Group supplements such as Berocca are thought to give you energy. However, vitamins and minerals do not actually provide the body with energy. The B Group vitamins in particular help you use your energy from proteins, carbohydrates and fats more effectively, in turn, giving you more energy.

Question 3:

Very tricky math! Note: This must be done in your head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it. Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now, add 10. What is the total?

Question 4:

Mary’s father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini, 4. Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?

Question 5: There is a mute person who wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing one’s teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done. Now if there is a blind man who wishes to buy a pair of sunglasses, how should he express himself?

ANSWERS: Question 1: If you answered that you are first, then you are absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are second! Question 2: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST Person? Question 3: Did you get 5000? The correct answer is actually 4100. Don’t believe it? Check with your calculator! Question 4: Nunu? NO! Of course not! Her name is Mary. Read the question again Question 5: He just has to open his mouth and ask, so simple.

So if you thought you could skip brekky, down a Berocca and feel on top of the world, think again. Have brekky! Chow down on B Group vitamins found in food or go the supplemental way. Eating a better diet and getting vitamins from food is always better than relying on supplements and/or stimulants such as coffee. It is possible to eat your way better energy! All you need to know is the basics and you are on your way. (AH & CH)

REFLECTIONS A Little Help May Go a Long Way While on the way to work today, I saw a young mother with a little 2 year old boy talking in American English, so I figured that they must not be living locally. “How old is your son?” I opened a conversation casually. “He is 26 months” she replied, then continued, “We have just missed out connecting flight from Sydney to the States, so we are stuck here in Sydney for the next 2 days. I have decided to take him to Taronga Zoo while we wait for our next flight.” I looked at the young mother going to the zoo with the 2 year old with no pram or a backpack. Then I reminded her that she should try to borrow a pram from the information centre at the zoo. I look through my bag and found a packet of baby wipes and handed it to her.

“Ohhh thank you so much.. it’s always good to meet another mother!” she thanked me with a smile.

I went to work thinking that I didn’t do much for her, but yet my little contribution may have made a big difference in her situation. You never know how a little help may go a long way. Try to help someone today and make a difference in their life. (CI)

Take Time to Spend Time While I was on the train, I saw a man with a little girl talking on the train. The way he talked and joked around with her indicated to me that they have a very good relationship with each other. I turned around and asked him: “How old is she?” “3 years old” he replied as he looked lovingly at his daughter who was smiling back sweetly at her dad. “You know, it is very encouraging to see a little child having a good relationship with her father. I just went to a Family Conference and found out that most people who are experiencing problems in their marriage are because of a bad or lack of relationship with their father. You are giving her the best every time you spend time with her.” He looked at me, smiled and said “Thank you.” How many times are we too busy to

spend time

with our loved ones because of our busy schedule? We need to realise that to love is to take time out to spend time with them, no matter how busy our lives can be. (CI)

Eco trend This month we are focusing on recycled, re-used and eco friendly products to revamp the home. You see it everywhere, its even debated in politics. Everyone wants to go green and environmentally friendly. We all want to reduce our global footprint to some degree, but how can we do it without compromising on style? If you know where to look, it is easy to be stylish and doing your part in the ‘green’ stakes.

Italian Beauty Spots For a country that is overflowing with tourist attractions and history, it is no wonder Italy is one of the most visited countries in the world. I went there myself not so long ago and I remember being in awe of this beautiful country. Here I will give hints and tips on some of my favourite attractions in the hope that, one day, you’ll be able to experience everything Italy has to offer too.

Rome “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” You bet it

wasn’t! And it’ll definitely take you more than a day to be able to appreciate this majestic city. Be prepared to do a lot of walking because, after all, it is much more worthwhile to go on foot and be able to see all the little details hidden in this city, known as Roma in Italian. The first stop would definitely have to be The Colosseum. The construction is amazing and the history behind the deteriorating walls is incredible. Over 2000 years old, The Colosseum was used for games and events for over 50,000 people. Taking a step into The Colosseum is like taking a step back into time. Amazing. It’s quite hot when you visit in summer, so be sure to wear sunscreen and pack a water bottle. It’s not like The Colosseum comes with shade or anything!

The Vatican Museum was a favourite of mine, and for all those history buffs out there, you’ll definitely love it too. The only problem was that this place was so big, there wasn’t enough time in the day to see everything. Countless extraordinary artworks call The Vatican Museum their home. Frescoes line the floors, sculptures decorate the halls and paintings are displayed on the walls, all created by famous Italian artists like Michelangelo and Raphael, for example. One of the more interesting things for me was the busts and portraits of past Roman emperors and members of the royal families. Then once you’re done with travelling back in time, take a break by the Trevi Fountain, toss in a coin, make a wish and then chill with some gelato because it is deliciously delightful.

Venice Venice, or Venezia, may be a little bit crowded, but there are little quiet spots if you can find them. It’s the city on water and it is absolutely stunning. Everybody knows that you cannot go to Venice without riding on a gondola. Sure, it’s not as romantic as the movies make it seem nor is it as magical as one might think. The boats rock, the water smells, there’s water traffic. But hey, it’s an experience. Piazza San Marco is the main square in Venice. It can often be full of people but it is a beautiful sight at night. Surrounding the square are shops stocked with delicate Murano jewellery, a specialty of the city. Venice is also full of beautiful and deli-

cate Venetian masks. You can also visit St Mark’s Basilica in Piazza San Marco. There are many mosaics to feast your eyes on, and this church is absolutely stunning, you could stay there forever. If you have some spare time, feel free to make a trip to Burano Island. It’s a small little town where the houses are painted in bright colours and you can’t help but walk around and feel cheerful. Getting lost in Venice is actually not a bad thing to do, so don’t think of it as a horrible experience. My friends and I got lost. It was an interesting adventure and we enjoyed it. So if you do get lost, just walk around and soak in the atmosphere.

Florence One of my favourite cities was Florence, Firenze in Italian, because of how easy it was to access everything. Here, there are two towers you can climb. One is The Dome and the other is Giotto’s Tower. I had the pleasure of climbing Giotto’s Tower, but only because my companions and I picked the wrong staircase to walk up and we actually thought we were going up The Dome. But no matter, both are equally beautiful and the architecture is astounding. When reaching the top of either tower, you are presented with the most glorious view of Florence. It’s such a thrilling sensation to feel as

though you are on top of the world and that is what you get at the top of these towers. Take a stroll over the Ponte Vecchio Bridge and watch a sunset. There is something captivating about the river around this time and it will make you appreciate spending a day in Florence. A trip to the leather markets can be fun, the one near the San Lorenzo Church in particular. There are so many things to see and if you’re a popular person, here’s the place to buy souvenirs. Don’t forget to pick something up for yourself too!

So much more beautiful than what any camera can capture, Italy is a country full of possibilities and experiences. Words cannot even come close to describing the beauty and the architecture of The Colosseum, the talent of the artists or the secrets in the streets. There’s obviously much that I haven’t mentioned, but you’ll just have to find out about those yourselves. And if you do decide to go, keep an eye on your belongings, have a fully charged camera every morning and don’t forget to eat pizza. You may never want Domino’s again. (SF) NEW CITY MAGAZINE . 15

The Norfolk Hotel The new spot to hang out in the Surry Hills area, The Norfolk Hotel has been revamped and is under new management. Now with all the pokie machines taken out of the hotel and a really catchy food theme, The Norfolk Hotel has become the place to be, to do the two things we all love to do: eat and drink.

http://www.thenorfolk.co

With an American/Mexican style finger/street food concept, people have been switching from eating a big meal to snacking. You can find items such as Taco’s (chicken, beef, fish, pork, vegie) and American style mini hot dogs, spicy double coated wings, deep fried pickles, pork belly rolls and potato skins with bacon and cheese. They also offer main meals like osso bucco pappardelle pasta, ribs, parmagiana, homemade beef pie and fish and chips just to name a few.

And if you’re thinking that it sounds all expensive, then come down for lunch for a $10 meal between 12-3pm or if you can’t make lunch, then pick one of their special nights to come to. Style Guide

The number one rule in wearing a cape is to keep the rest of your outfit slim lined so you are not overpowered by fabric.

WINTER STYLE

The guide to your best Winter Cape

Petite shapes

– keep the length short so that it doesn’t finish past your hips and shorten you further.

In Sydney our weather does not always call for a long heavy coat yet we still need to keep warm and there comes in the cape which is so hot right now. Keeping covered and chic in this cold weather is easy. Choosing a neutral colour will enable you to take the cape from office to weekend and then onto night.

Pear shapes

– ensure the length of your cape does not fall at your thighs as this will emphasize them, instead choose a cape that falls mid length.

Athletic build – look for a cape that incorporates a belt

to help create a waist.

Pair with fabulous wedges or boots in a similar shade to elongate your legs. Patterned capes are fun but if you are new to this shape, black is always a safe option. Camel or chocolate is just as versatile and allows for extra colour to be added like a pair of red jeans. These will become a great wardrobe addition to start your colour blocking collection. If you are still not sure then one of your “must have” wardrobe staples is the classic trench and who can go past this gorgeous coat by Burberry who are world renown for their amazing style.

k.d. lang: Recollection She’s been described as “the best singer of her generation” by music great Tony Bennett. With her simple approach and warm feel, you cannot but be drawn to her graceful tones and high quality vocals. When k.d. lang hits a note you can be assured that she will maintain it and that’s the simple beauty of her singing which is both elegant and graceful. As you all know, we’re living in a time where synthetic sounds and diva belted tunes are the order of the day, don’t get me wrong though I love R&B and Dance tracks too. It’s just that I miss simple, well produced songs that are totally real, striking a chord within your heart and make you come alive so to speak. After 25 years, we finally get to hear her first career retrospective album which comes nicely packaged in a 2 CD set with over 20 songs to enjoy! This album has everything from minor hits to certified chart toppers without the cheesiness of “country”. She has wonderful collaborations on this album which include duets with giants like Roy Orbison, Tony Bennett and Elton John to name a few. She may be the only person that could sing “Crying” with Orbison and not ruin it as well as singing “Moonglow” with Bennett with such charm and ease. “Constant Craving” the song we all know rocketted lang’s career into the stratosphere is also a wonderful addition to this album not to mention “Hallelujah” the Leonard Cohen classic which features not once but twice too. The simple things in life are often the best! (MR)

Crowded House: The Very Very Best of Crowded House I know some of you may be thinking another best of album; this being the third and the second one was released over a decade ago and had the same amount of tracks. There are 19 tracks on this album and it’s strangely familiar to “Recurring dream” (previous best of album) with the only real difference being that this new album has been reshuffled and they have dropped four songs in favour of another four which are, ‘Chocolate cake’, ‘Pour Le Monde’, ‘Nails In My Feet’ and ‘Don’t Stop Now’. Apparently this album was meant to commemorate their 25th Anniversary and describe their journey as a band. On a more positive note though Crowded House are super stars in their own right with many of the songs on this album being true solid Gold greats. They have been described as modern day Beatles and regarded by some as the southern hemisphere R.E.M! The album itself is their most complete to date and covers all of their studio albums except for “Intriguer” which was released recently. The songs to look out for on this album are the chart topping, ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’, ‘Something So Strong’ and ‘Mean To Me’. ‘Private Universe’ is also on the album and is one of their most intimate songs to date. All in all a great pop/rock album but if you want some good advice, drop this album from your list and buy “Recurring Dream” instead. It has 15 identical tracks and is a fraction of the price! (MR)

CD review The Black Eyed Peas: The Beginning

Architecture in Helsinki: In Case We Die

This is Architecture in Helsinki’s second studio album that met with high acclaim when released in 2005. They are a flagship band for Australian indie pop, with their symphonic and electronic pop sound that is both tentative and will charm your socks off! ☺ Their aptly named “Super Melody World Studio” was where this baby was born and what a gift it has been. There are truly sweet melodies and vocals with that real pop feel flowing throughout the album. It’s kinda playful and will have you humming along and tapping your feet to the rich and versatile sounds that are distinct yet blended masterfully. I particularly like the track ‘Do the Whirlwind’ and will let Heather Phares of allmusic describe it to you, “the single “Do the Whirlwind” -- which is so sleekly synthy that it could almost pass for straight-up dance-pop -- shares at least some of the quirky warmth of more homespunsounding songs like “Tiny Paintings.” Most of the songs are very multifaceted and constantly change, like the great opening song ‘Neverevereverdid’, which starts with a chilling opera inspired feel then transitions into lyrically charged folk-pop and finally transforms into a fast , loud rock fuelled track. There are also nice sweet touches like the power-drill solo on ‘Frenchy, I’m Fakin’ and great jungle vibe on ‘Need to Shout’ which guarantee the album’s authenticity as a slick, well produced and polished album. (MR)

Birthdays

Apparently Will.I.Am has said of their club-banging track, ‘Don’t Stop the Party’, “This is that original... There is no identical”. Well that’s a big statement to make when most of their songs these days are filled with samples of popular and familiar songs. Take for instance, ‘The Time’ (Dirty Bit), which features the well known sample of dancing hit, ‘Time of My Life’ (Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes). This is a freakish hybrid of hip hop and synth pop; that amazingly enough, seems to work even though it comes off as cheesy. LOL ☺ If not careful, in the future due to their excessive use of samples they could come off as a modern pop cover band! Their track ‘Fashion Beats’ is very Blondie inspired and relies heavily on guitar riffs and keyboard synth with the trademark Fergie rap solo’s we all enjoy. ‘Love You Longtime’ is close to being an original track even though it still tends to borrow familiar beats from other songs. ‘Play It Loud’ sounds so much like U2 it’s uncanny and ‘Do it Like This’ is a pretty good dance track as well as ‘The Best One Yet (The Boy). The Beginning is more cheese than wine, which as you can see I prefer the later. If only it was a blend of both it would have been exquisite but it lacks the WOW factor this time round. It’s a blast to listen to the first time but ends up being average with time. (MR)

Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro

You’ve heard of HSV’s Clubsport, an honest naturally aspirated V8 made by some Americans, shipped to us to bolt onto a Commodore. It is a massive 317kw of raw power from a 6.2ltr engine, its enough power to get you into trouble. I like that sort of thing; I really love the fact that we can produce some awesome cars from a country where the humble lump of coal and wheat are our best assets.

I felt proud until I saw and heard recently of a concept car that might make it to production in a guise of a small little hatch from Audi. The Audi looks mean; it ticks all the boxes for a sports car from a donor body, like HSV is to Holden Commodores. This Audi A1 is supposed to be a tamed and civil civic car for the masses. Stylish 30-somethings who’d buy a Mini but want to be different as well. Not anymore! This Clubsport cannot be mixed up with HSV’s, this A1 Clubby Quattro is made by zee Germans, and we all know zee Germans don’t muck around when it comes to making a quick car.

A 2.5 litre 5-cylinder turbo engine pumping out 370kw and 660Nm of torque powers the beast. That is a 0-100km sprint in 3.7 sec, that’s Ferrari and Porsche territory. All this power is apparently inspired and parts derived from the German DTM race franchise. You can always rely on the Germans to get that much power out of a 2.5 litre engine. Its mind blowing and I really hope they put this car into production. But it will make the HSV Clubsport look like just a club minus the sport. (JY)

MOVIE r e v i ew Monte Carlo This looks set to be a great movie with an enjoyable story, great acting and cheeky moments. With the likes of singer/songwriter Selena Gomez taking on the leading role as Grace (a young girl who goes on vacation to Monte Carlo with her two friends, Leighton Meester as Margaret, Grace’s future stepsister) and Katie Cassidy as Emma (a high school dropout). It’s actually quite a funny movie with adequate points of drama, comedy and a twist that sees Selena’s acting ability blossom, as she also takes on the role or better said guise as Cordelia, a British Heiress! ☺ The three young girls use their savings to travel to Paris and live out their dream holiday, which actually ends up being a total disaster. But just as the night is always darkest before the dawn..., it dawns on the three girls that Grace has a remarkable resemblance to the British Heiress Cordelia, who happens to be going out of town so to speak. So this then opens up the opportunity for Grace to pretend to be Cordelia and together with her friends, live it up like royalty, enjoying the five star benefits amidst many others. From exquisite hotel rooms to being chauffer driven and eating a 26lb lobster (the size of a small dog) LOL. They then embark on a wild adventure that is a huge adrenaline rush as the thought of getting caught is always lingering in their minds. This then leads to the girls travelling to Monte Carlo where they make some interesting new friends. This movie ticks all the right boxes as far as teenage chick flicks go and even has something in there for couples too. (MR)

Zookeeper Kevin James (Hitch, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Grown Ups) returns to form with another crazy and outlandish role, this time round as Griffin Keyes a friendly and lovable Zookeeper! ☺ You know you’re in for a funny and memorable movie when director Frank Coraci (The Wedding Singer, Click) is on board. The Beloved Zookeeper Griffin decides that it’s time to quit his job and try his hand at dating. He then finds out that his animal friends have been keeping an incredible secret from him? Griffin is a single guy who absolutely loves his job at the Franklin Park Zoo. He has a special bond with the animals but realises that as great as the animals are, that he really needs more. He decides that a more prestigious job is what he’s looking for and may be the key to him finding a new girlfriend. Word then gets out to the animals that Griffin will soon be leaving and this sends them into a state of panic as they don’t want to lose him (Think Doctor Do Little crossed with Night at the Museum). The animals then decide that the only way to keep Griffin around is to tell him their incredible secret... that they can talk! Who knows maybe his animal friends can help him out with some dating advice and teach him a thing or two about courting, thus leading him to meet the girl of his dreams without losing the job he loves. Other great actors include Rosario Dawson (Men in Black II, Eagle Eye and Unstoppable) who co stars alongside Kevin along with the voice talents of Sylvester Stallone (Lion), Adam Sandler (Monkey), Nick Nolte (Gorilla) and Cher (Lioness) among many others. (MR)

Captain America: The First Avenger

The Smurfs

I am so excited and can’t wait for this movie to be released on July 22. As this is Marvel Studio’s Patriot Superhero, you know they are going to give it the royal treatment and spare no expense in the process. So with that in mind, they have the likes of Director, Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III, The Wolfman) and Writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely ( The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader), working hard on bringing the world of Captain America to life. It also stars Chris Evans as Steve Rogers aka Captain America, who I believe is perfectly suited for the role. My initial thought when I saw the preview was how far technology has come and how fortunate we are to live in a time when great comic book characters can be realistically portrayed on screen in all their glory! Captain America is no exception and has wonderful acting, vibrant characters, great action and comedy too. Hugo Weaving (The Matrix Trilogy and V for Vendetta) stars as Red Face, the evil villain of the film and he just blazes onscreen as one would expect from the iconic Agent Smith that we have all come to know and love! I know there are many of you out there that can still remember his classic one-liners... ☺ So this sets the stage for an intense and amazing movie experience, set in the 1940’s during World War II when Hitler was in power. You will come to appreciate the deeper meaning of the film as it portrays justice, heroism, patriotism and sacrificial love, where there is always hope that good will eventually triumph over evil. (MR)

Those cute little pint sized blue creatures are back finally and they are cooler than ever. Being a first for the Smurfs franchise, this movie is a blend of CGI and live action. I believe the blend works well and has done the Smurfs justice too. Katy Perry voices Smurfette, the wise cracking and domineering female Smurf lead of the film, who is reminiscent of Miss Piggy from The Muppet Show. There are other favourites too that include Papa Smurf (Jonathan Winters), Clumsy Smurf (Anton Yelchin) , Brainy Smurf (Fred Armisen), The evil Gargamel (Hank Azaria) and many others. I loved the cartoon as a child and remember singing the classic Smurf tune regularly too (La la la la la la...La la la la la). I know it’s so simple but the simple things in life are often the best! Anyway you’re in for a real treat with this new instalment as we journey with the Smurfs into their forest homes among the mushrooms, ponds and trees which are all faithfully recreated from the cartoons. Suddenly, the Smurfs are rudely interrupted by the dastardly Wizard Gargamel who discovers their secret village and chases them into a wooded area. Clumsy Smurf then wanders into a forbidden grotto followed by some of the other Smurfs. Since it’s also a blue moon, a magical portal then transports them from the middle ages to present day Central Park in New York. They end up being taken care of by a married couple, Patrick and Grace Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays) as they desperately try to find a way back to their village before Gargamel finds them.
