Well, I’m no scientist and will not comment more on that. I’ll leave that to the experts. But, what I do know and if you’re aware what’s happening around the world, you would be able to read that these are times of uncertainty. We don’t know what we’re going to get. Even if the scientists say one thing or the government saying another thing. We will most likely get something else! We don’t know who to trust or can’t even convict them of lying to us because we do not have much proof. It feels like the blind leading the blind.

March is here. Summer hardly came. Soon it will be autumn and then winter again! This summer felt more like winter. So much for global warming... I think that’s why they call it different now. It’s now “climate change” since it’s not a warming that were experiencing but more on the cooling side.
But no matter what happens, we must be ready for it. The years 2012 and 2013 will be different and different things are required of us so that we can excel and move forward to the next level in life. Sometimes, we need to come to a place of emptying and cleansing ourselves, before we can go to the next level. Are you satisfied with where you are, what you are and what you have accomplished? I know it is a good thing to be “thankful” with what you have, but it is a different thing when you are “satisfied” with where you are and not having the desire to move forward. Internally, you must cleanse and empty yourself from being just “ok” with what you have accomplished and go for the best, but not forgetting to be thankful with what you have right now. TRUE CONQUEST will not come until there’s internal CLEANSING. Are you just “happy” with your 9-5 job, weekly pay check, or you know you’ve got more to offer, that you can do better than that? And if you’re at a place where you feel that you are losing everything that you have at the moment... don’t worry, keep persevering and have hope... because usually cleansing comes before conquest. So, just prepare yourself mentally, physically and spiritually, for the victory you’re about to receive. Cheers, Ben Irawan Editor of NEW CITY Magazine editor@newcitymagazine.com

Getting Ahead of the New Mid Life Crisis Most of us have heard the term “mid life crisis.” Most of the time it goes something like this “Oh he/she seems to be having a bit of a mid life crisis.” The speaker frowns. The listener responds with a sympathetic sigh and a sad shake of the head.
I have often joked that I am looking forward to my mid-life crisis. I will know when it comes because I will have finally given into the temptation to dye my hair blonde (there is a shade of blonde for everyone so my sister says) and quit my job in pursuit of a more artisan ‘who cares if it doesn’t pay the bills’ career. At this point I will get a motorbike. I am looking forward to wearing leathers. But of course this is all in jest. In actuality, a mid-life crisis is a transitional stage often marked by serious feelings of restlessness, disappointment, dread, anxiety or panic. Author Jim Conway has stated that ‘escaping the mid life development crisis is probably as likely as a child escaping adolescence.’ While some manage to sail through the mid life developmental stage with relative ease, just as some teenagers sail through adolescence, others find it much harder to deal with. Biddulph, author of many books on the topic of manhood, makes an interesting claim on the matter. He believes that every man should plan for his mid-life crisis, setting up his life so that he can take a year off at age 40 to spend in the wilderness, camping, fishing, spending time with the family and re-assessing what the next forty years are going to hold. Just a little aside, British research has shown that the age of said crisis is creeping forward from forty to thirty five. Perhaps planning for this stage of life isn’t such a bad idea. Who of us hasn’t turned up to work on a Monday, glanced in passing at the mounting paperwork waiting on the desk and headed straight for the kitchen where we stared into our mugs and thought ‘Can I do this until I retire?’ It is not Mondayitis that causes the crisis. Usually we are over that by Tuesday. But when this career rut becomes chronic it can lead to disappointment, restlessness, stress and hey presto! Crisis point arrives, having tiptoed in sneakily when we weren’t looking.
Take your annual leave every year: This is a big mistake made
by so many people. Annual leave is there for a reason. We need the time to regenerate and recharge. So often people don’t take leave or don’t rest when they are on leave. The better way is to spend some time resting and reflecting every year. Use the time to set some goals and look at the areas of life that require attention. What’s more, celebrate the things that you love. “But I am on a casual wage?” You might say. No you don’t get annual leave but you do get a 20% leave loading on top of your hourly rate. It is meant to be a pay off for the sick leave and holiday pay you don’t get. Just so you know…
Create a personal growth plan: This
can serve to minimize feelings of powerlessness and disappointment that often contribute to the crisis. It also helps you keep an eye on the big picture. For many, the crisis crept in when they felt they had achieved all they could achieve and that they had peaked in life. Having a personal growth plan can keep you focused, knowing that you haven’t peaked yet.
Look after the body: Mid life is a stage where people can get frustrated that the body doesn’t heal and recover as quickly as it used to. This, unfortunately, is a fact of life and can be a confronting reminder of lost youth. However, putting a few proactive measures in and looking after your physical wellbeing is one way you can minimize the impact of bad health. Structure your finances for freedom: Mortgage ruts, career ruts, debt stress – it all contributes. However, if you are taking a proactive approach to mid life, financial freedom is important. If you do find yourself in a situation where time off is needed, it’s nice to have the financial reserves to be able to do so.
Nobody wants to end up there. But as they told us in business school, people don’t plan to fail. They fail to plan. Maybe you can’t take a year off at age forty and trip around Australia reflecting on what has been so great about the last forty but you can take some proactive steps minimize the impact of this development stage.
Well that’s the proactive stuff. But what do you do if you find yourself in the situation where proactive action is not enough and you are in the crisis good and proper. 1. Level with your spouse. You are going to need their support and
understanding. Times of depression or withdrawal may strike. Often feelings of resentment can creep into a relationship simply because you look at your spouse and children and start to pin blame on them for the way you feel. Remember this: They are not the problem. It is a development and transition stage. Your spouse can be an amazing support and ally in your recovery. What’s more, weathering the crisis together can build further trust and add a richness to your relationship that comes from facing adversity together.
2. Remember your values. Okay I am going to be blunt about this. We
have heard about the mid life crisis affair all too much. But how crushing it can be to the spouse and family of the unfaithful partner. There is broken trust. There are feelings of betrayal and failure. There is the fallout when a family dynamic changes. Many spouses are left thinking “What happened? This is so out of character for him/her.” This is where values are important. Articulate them. Write them down. Commit to them. And don’t give in to the temptation. Your values are what have defined your life so far. Don’t give up on them.

DON’T NEGLECT YOUR KIDS! Regular dental checkups for children are very important.
3. Don’t give in. Don’t give up. Yeah, it’s not easy. The compulsion to
escape might be a really hard one to fight. But hang in there. Anger, self pity and frustration or depression are common by products of the mid life crisis. But people have weathered it before. You can too. No matter how hard it feels. Sure, you might have to call in some support staff. You might have to break a habit of silence and open up to some people who can help you through. You might have to muster all the strength you can find. Easy? No. Doable? Yes.
4. Change and escape are two different things. Change can be really positive. Focus on that. Change is the hope that can see you through the crisis. Just make sure that values are what don’t change. Stay consistent with them. (CH)

FOOD REVIEW
Bay Vista F
rom time to time my stomach just craves all things sweet and it usually ends up with me having a really sore stomach, but all you sweet tooth people out there know it is a small consolation for the sweet sweet goodness.
So, to satisfy my sweet tooth I went down to BAY VISTA at Brighton Le Sands. Now I’ll be honest, I never really knew it had been there for over 21 years. It might have been cause they used to have the 80’s styled neon lights at the front which didn’t make it very appealing. BUT, walking pass it the other day I was gobsmacked at the transformation of BV, it’s trendy and up to date. The decor is spot on, almost looking like something you see on tv in america. I especially love all the quirky quotes on the wall such as “a waffle is like a pancake with a syrup trap “. Now you definitely need to go to BV with at least 3-4 people as their servings are quite large and desserts quite rich. Their most popular dish Nutella Crepes with fresh banana and crushed nuts is a must try and also the 5th Avenue which is not for the faint hearted cause it contains peanut butter, chocolate and boysenberry ice cream, New York cheesecake pieces, chocolate brownies, real ice cream ‘soft serve’, whipped cream, fountain chocolate and waffle bites.

Foster The People: Torches
One Direction: Up All Night From X Factor last year to global superstars and melting teenage girl’s hearts wherever their music is heard, One Direction is here to show that they’re not just another boy band that appeared on a famous TV show but that they are serious contenders for that coveted boy band of the year title! ☺ With songs like, ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ that has been a worldwide smash hit with over 52 million hits on YouTube in 6 months. The Quintet made up of Harry, Louis, Zayn, Niall and Liam really live up to the title of the album as they worked tirelessly and were up all night on many occasions making this album something special for all their fans. Another huge hit was ‘Gotta Be you’, a catchy little number that’s all about second chances and the realisation that there’s only 1 ideal person out there and to never let that person go. There’s also ‘I Want’ which is an edgier track with a slightly harder sound accompanied by guitar and is different to their usual sound but nonetheless toe tapping fun. What I really like about this album is that the quality of each individual track is great and could have been released as singles in their own right, usually albums rise or fall on the popularity of their singles. When interviewed by Mark Boardman Louis said, “We’ve only been together for a very short time, we’ve all bonded really well and are best friends, I think it’s really important to work hard and to share the same dreams.” (MR)
New indie sensation Foster The People have had many dancing with their debut smash album “Torches” which of course includes the hit, ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ that has become a worldwide sensation. With emotionally irresistible melodies and crazy hooks it’s no wonder they have gained international attention lately! There are heavy electronic influences throughout their music which also include strange sound effects, heavy drum beats and a few maniacal laughs thrown in just for fun. What I like about the trio Foster The People is that they have brought something fresh to the masses, music that is both relative and contemporary at the same time with a real 80’s pop feel but then again is set apart from any other mainstream pop out there. There are also diverse issues that are raised throughout the songs such as, not caring about what others think of you, lack of freedom, making something of yourself and so on. Love is also an underlying theme throughout the album and social commentary is well spread among the songs too. Lyrically, it’s all over the place but I guess that’s part of the appeal as it feels as though you’re listening to a band sing spontaneous songs that can relate to your current situation. Not to mention lead singer, “Mark Foster’s” unique voice that some may feel is whiny and prepubescent but then others love that sort of sound so to each his own I guess. Overall it’s a great album and quite fun too. (MR)
MOVIE REVIEW
Wrath of the Titans I’m a sucker for action movies with big budgets, mythological inspired storylines and huge boss battles. I watched ‘Clash of the Titans’ and was pleasantly surprised by the great acting and visual eye candy that was on display! Now with the sequel ‘Wrath of the Titans’ it’s as one would expect, bigger monsters, more epic battle sequences and Perseus (Sam Worthington) really coming into his own as demigod son of Zeus. The story takes place 10 years after his defeat of the mighty Kraken and now we see Perseus return to his original trade as a fishermen enjoying a peaceful existence with his 10 year old son Helius. Unknown to Perseus though is a war that is being waged between the gods and titans
The Lorax
From the makers of “Despicable me” comes a tale from the amazingly imaginative mind of Dr. Seuss in the form of “The Lorax”. Who is a bright orange peanut shaped grandpa who is both grumpy yet charming and has something very special to share with people who are willing to listen. This is actually the fourth feature film based on the popular children’s book and by the looks of it, is actually the best so far! The story centers on a boy named Ted (Zac Efron) who lives in ‘Thneed-Ville’, a city that apart from being populated by other people is completely artificial. He’s desperate to find the one thing that will win the heart and affection of the girl he likes named
where at any moment the titans could break free of their prison and topple the gods, due to the lack of devotion from the mortals on earth. Kronos is the Father of Zeus, Hades and Poseidon and leader of the Titans, he was overthrown by his sons and is back to exact revenge if he can escape his miserable existence exiled in Tartarus (bowels of the underworld). The twist comes when Zeus is double crossed by those closest to him and then Perseus realises he must take up the sword again or risk the future of his son and mankind annihilated before his eyes. This time the stakes are higher, battles are immense and the future of the Earth is in Perseus hands. If you liked Clash of the Titans you’ll love Wrath of the Titans! ☺ (MR)
Audrey (Taylor Swift). Somehow Ted stumbles upon a well kept secret that his city has been cut off from the outside world and that a man named Once-ler (Ed Helms) once met the mysterious Lorax who in fact is the guardian of the land. Trees are the reason for the isolation of Ted’s town and he may very well hold the future literally in his hand as he has the last remaining seed! This is at its heart a message of hope to never give up on your dreams and to think outside the box, that there’s more to life than just making money and to see others reach the freedom that you have found is priceless. A wonderful 3D animated movie with lush visuals, a great script and a lot of heart! (MR)
Improving Your Leadership IQ “Since the new boss started, we have become less goal Leadership requires vision: Leadership is what takes people from a point of “I go to work to earn money...” to a point of “I go to work because I believe in focused and more and more like the compliance alli- the vision of my team/workplace and want to do my part.” This is maybe a bit ance...” said the clearly unmotivated businessman at more challenging than just getting people to fill in the right paperwork. Why? it means you have to have a vision for your team. If leadership if transthe table next to mine. “We have become almost en- Because formational, vision is what provides the platform for that transformation. It is tirely compliance oriented.” what causes people to give 100% every day and turn down that other job with Ok so I have been at it again: Eavesdropping in cafe queues and food courts wherever my life takes me. But as a business owner, what he said intrigued me. How much does workplace leadership impact the culture and morale of our workplaces? I think we all know the answer to that. Leadership is huge. As a manager, if you are noticing a lot of absenteeism, you would logically start to question the morale within your team. But absenteeism is just the tip of the iceberg. Staff turnover, lower levels of productivity, in-office conflict and presenteeism (when your team members are at work but in body only, struggling with distraction and low motivation levels) are other by-products of a leadership void. Too often a leadership lack is replaced by micromanagement. However, if you have been micromanaged, you would know how thin this treatment wears before long.
more money because they love and believe in what they do. It is a major driver for job satisfaction. The best bosses I have ever had were the ones where I felt connected to the vision and empowered to change and grow as a person and as an employee. These were the workplaces that I was most loyal to. These were the workplaces run by vision not obligation.
You can lead from anywhere in your organisation. In his book “The 360 Degree Leader” leadership expert John C. Maxwell argues that you can lead from anywhere in your organisation. This brings another distinction to mind. You can lead by position (“Because I am the manager”) or you can lead by function, using your personal leadership skills and qualities to bolster morale and create focus and forward movement in your own team or area of influence. It’s about personal charisma, motivation and integrity. It isn’t about position.
Maybe your workplace isn’t that bad. Maybe you aren’t even a manager but rather a team member. Regardless of who you are, your position in your organisation or how good/bad the workplace morale is, all of us can benefit from a little bit of knowledge regarding leadership. Might I say there is a hell of a lot out there too! Before you go loading up on every leadership theory and overloading your brain on the topic, please note that it is not how much you know but how much you do that actually makes a difference! It is great to know a few theories but you have to do something about it. Here are a few concepts you can add to your leadership artillery that, when applied, can start making a difference straight away. So, if we are looking at improving our leadership IQ, the best place to start is at the very beginning.
Share the work, share the credit. Andrew Carnegie once said “No one will Leadership and Management are two different things: This is the first make a great leader who wants to do it all themselves and get all the credit for distinction that an effective leader needs to make. I can manage my own budgets, commitments, paperwork and diary. That is easy enough. However, leadership is more than that. Leadership is the ability to inspire others to move beyond compliance and into something bigger. It is essential to true teamwork and is a quality that is much lacking in many workplaces.
doing it.” This quote in itself is a great guide to the art of leadership. Share the responsibility. Share the load. More importantly, share the credit. This says “This is our vision. You are important too.” It shows the personal integrity of the leader by showing that they are willing to get behind the work but not hog the glory.
Leadership is a people focus.
Managers tend to have a work focus. They build the work but leaders build the people. Building the people creates loyalty and morale borne of appreciation for the personal investment this person, who happens to be the manager, invested into the individual. As Confucius said (I have always wanted to quote this guy!) “He who wished to secure the good of others has already secured his own.”
If you want to make some easy distinctions here, think of it in these terms: Managers have subordinates. Leaders have followers. Managers work in terms of stability, objectives, formal authority, and short-term goals. It is generally transactional in its nature - meaning “If you do this, you get this.” It is the exchange of work for benefit. Leaders on the other hand work in terms of change, vision, personal charisma, passion, long-term goals and tend toward transformational But this in itself is not a self focus. The best leaders never say “I.” They don’t leadership. I am not saying that management is unnecessary. It is absolutely even think in terms of themselves. It’s all about the team. They say “We.” They needed. However if you are able to combine leadership and management, imthink “We.” This is the road to trust and true teamwork.(CH) agine the impact you could have on the culture of your organisation and not just on the bottom line!

WORK WEAR MADE EASY Every morning we wake up to get ready for work and open the wardrobe, staring, thinking, what am I going to wear today. You go to the same trusty pants and shirt that you wear every week and feel exactly the same.
1
Inject some life into to your weekly wardrobe, we spend most of our time in work wear so the emphasis should be put into making a fun, comfortable and exciting wardrobe. You don’t need a cupboard space like Carrie Bradshaw to make this possible. Investing in key pieces and knowing what works best on your body is the first place to start.
Here are your essential items:
• A simple cut pair of black pants putting emphasis on the exact fit and material. • A matching blazer. Be careful where your jackets sit. You don’t want them hitting you at your widest as this can accentuate what we want to hide. • The classic white shirt. Not everyone can wear white, not for fear of spilling your morning coffee, it is more about your colouring. It does not suit all skin tones. • Shift dress • A pencil skirt • Black bag and • Your most comfortable pair of black pumps
2
Armed with the above add neutrals for a classic style and inject some colour for those days you are feeling fabulous or need uplifting. I have written in a previous article regarding the importance of colour and how it can change your mood and day. Don’t we all want to have a great day? Knowing where to start is the hard part, calling me to help you make the most of your current wardrobe and arming you with a list of what you need is easy. Hope you enjoy and remember the secret to chic is to appear as if you didn’t have to try to hard. (KA)

REFLECTIONS
Do You Know the Legend of the Cherokee Indian Youths’ Rite of Passage? His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds him and leaves him alone. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it. He cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a MAN. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience, because each lad must come into manhood on his own. The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild beasts must surely be all around him. Maybe even some human might do him harm. The wind blew the grass and earth, and shook his stump, but he sat stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he could become a man! Finally, after a horrific night the sun appeared and he removed his blindfold. It was then that he discovered his father sitting on the stump next to him. He had been at watch the entire night, protecting his son from harm. We, too, are never alone. Even when we don’t know it, God is watching over us, sitting on the stump beside us. When trouble comes, all we have to do is reach out to Him. He may not give us the answer we want, but he is there. Moral of the story: Just because you can’t see God, Doesn’t mean He is not there. “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (Unknown)

TRAVEL
HONG KONG
The home of 6.8 million people, Hong Kong is a vibrant city with an exceptional public transport system to help locals and tourists alike get around. If that isn’t your cup of tea, then there are a multitude of taxis available for your travel needs. At first, the flood of people rushing past you may overwhelm you, but once you get over that, you can easily flow through the current and enjoy the ride. It’s the little pieces of Hong Kong that will satisfy you, the city’s organisation is merely a bonus. Hong Kong’s chefs have a versatility that is sure to please whatever desire you may have. Their skills mixed with the city’s love for food, ensure that each dining experience is unique. You can find places with cheaper dishes, as well as more expensive dishes, but the quality will be of a consistent standard no matter where you go. Traditional foods as well as Western foods are found all over city, depending on what you feel like. Located in the Kowloon Peninsula are Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok. These are among the best shopping centrals in Hong Kong. Tsim Sha Tsui has a collection of various store, malls and restaurants. Sure, the place is crowded with people, but you will notice that things are still in order. Cosmetic stores and international brands can be found here. Tsim Sha Tsui is full of entertainment and life and definitely cannot be missed by tourists. Mong Kok is mainly for youths, electronic buffs and those who like to look for a bargain. The streets are always bustling with people jumping from shop to shop, and coming out with more bags than they went in with. Many stores can be found more than one in Mong Kok, so if you can’t find something in one place, don’t worry, just head on over to a sister shop. If you’re more into sightseeing, Hong Kong provides many ways to get the perfect view of the city. Hopping aboard a Star Ferry allows you to get around the harbour and take a few snapshots for memories. In daylight or moonlight, the Star Ferry is an interesting experience and should be done at least once on your trip. It also takes you to Kowloon to get some shopping done! (SF)
Enjoy your next trip to Hong Kong! Let us know how it goes ;)
Honda CR-Z
I love Honda’s, I own one for starters. My favourite driver was Ayrton Senna and he drove a Honda powered F1 car. That means I should not be the right person to review the new CR-Z, I would be bias and give the CR-Z preferential treatment. Truth is I’m not. As much as I want to like this car and what its trying to do, which is be sporty and ecofriendly at the same time. It just doesn’t work. We saw it with Honda’s F1 team before they went under. They called the Honda F1 car the Earth car. F1 is not a sport to promote eco anything.
So I guess they haven’t learnt their lesson. I get hybrid cars when they save the planet with mind boggling fuel saving figures. I get sports cars that can accelerate from 0-100km/ ph in less than 5 seconds. I get it. But what I don’t get is Honda making us a car that claims to be both but does neither well. It’s kind of like drinking a chili milkshake, they cancel each other out. Besides the look, which I personally think is gorgeous, it reminds me of the old CRX, that cool domestic clothes iron look. Its graphical detail in the interior is also very sharp and modern. What this car needs is what Honda used to do in the past, make an R version of this car and show Toyota and the world how hybrids should be. (JY)

What to do when it all goes wrong
If you have been following New City Magazine for a while and read these fitness articles, you would be no stranger to my love of all things healthy. I love fitness. I love health, nutrition, diet and exercise. I am a power-lifter as well. But today, I want to talk about what to do when it all goes wrong and you can’t carry out your previous fitness regime.
I
am not talking about when you took that week off over Christmas - three years ago - and haven’t gotten back into the gym since. I am talking about injury and illness: two of the most frustrating and often disheartening things that can happen in our lives.
fat percentage! For women, never drop below 18% of body fat and try to avoid going over 32%. For guys, never drop below 8% and avoid going over 25%. This is a guide. But the point is, check your motivation point. Make sure you are being motivated by good, healthy reasons. Body image is something we get wrong so easily, especially with the mounting pressure from media. We all feel that, not just people who have serious weight problems. Think about it this way: If you are motivated by the desire to fit into that bikini or get the guy, what happens if the bikini looks terrible and the guy doesn’t get it? Do you stop there? Do you throw your hands up in the air and eat 4 litres of double chocolate ice cream? Do you go to extremes? Perhaps a better motivation point is aiming to be fit and healthy, knowing in your head what type of fitness level you are going for. I am aiming for strength. I want a strong body so it can support itself. I went from being fit to being in a wheelchair and have had to bring myself back from there. Having lost all my strength due to illness, I now watch my diet (but not that closely), strength levels and general health because of what is important to me. What is important to you? If you are a parent, it is easy to get lost in the craziness of life and tell yourself “Not this week.” Soon its a year later and it all feels beyond you. The thing to get motivated is not necessarily your weight or fitness level in itself, but the long and healthy life you want to live for your kids. This is just an example of how we can re-frame our thinking to find a more positive health goal. Don’t allow yourself to get guilty if you physically cannot exercise. We can always watch what we put in our mouths. This is something that helped me when I was feeling the stress of not being able to exercise. If we get to this point, we can rest in the fact that health is 80% diet and 20% exercise. We can still make a difference. But also this is the point where we can exercise mentally.
I am talking from a point of experience here, when a severe illness in my own life sent my weight plummeting to dangerous levels and then skyrocketing to a point where my doctor actually mentioned in passing “OK, so you are obese. Let’s change your medication.” I had started out with the right attitude to fitness, nutrition and by default, weight. But then I got entrenched in a body-focused industry and things started to shift a bit in my mindset. Hence, when my illness was causing these massive fluctuations and there was nothing I could do about it, I had to think about the whole area of motivation and what to do when it all goes wrong. The first point I want to raise is that stress levels and mood can fluctuate with weight if your selfesteem and body image are held in the wrong place. It can very easily happen too. Often we can think “I look good therefore I am healthy and feel good.” This is actually really back to front. Health should be the cardinal goal of fitness and nutrition. Appearance should not. When it comes to the crunch, remember why you started. Was it to get fit and healthy? That is what it should have been and what it should be. A trimmer, more toned body is usually an external sign of internal health. Remember that. Usually people look to long, lean types as the example of what they should be. But we should always check to see that we aren’t becoming too lean, to the point where it is unhealthy. My recommendation is to never drop below a certain body
What do I mean by this? Don’t place stress upon yourself. Live in the now. Being thankful for what you do have and what you can achieve – whether that be physical health or even recovery – is what we should focus on during these times. Mindfulness is a key to actually strengthening our mind. Our society wants us to multi-task and do everything at once but we were never made for this kind of busyness. Mindfulness is being present in the moment, enjoying the little things in life like the textures and smell of the food you put in your mouth, the scenery around you and the fresh air you breathe in. What I am saying in a nutshell is this: take the pressure off. You are your own person. You are unique and have no one to compete with. The only thing you need to do is be the best you that you can be. (AH)
HOME
Bigger is Better The tittle is rather deceiving, it should be Bigger is better in some applications in interior design. I would have gone for that, but its too long. What I’m on about today is a cool way of utilizing size (large) and make it a point of reference for a space as an accent.

Conversation Blueprints or The Clever Art of Conversation
These are some of the tools and tricks that I’ve managed to pick up so far that have helped immensely • Approach people with confidence knowing that they are probably feeling as ‘shy’ as you are. • Always ask open ended questions, ones that require more than a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response. • Learn to draw people out by being friendly and genuinely interested in them • Endeavour to remember something that they may have already told you in the past – such as if they were going for a job interview, or having surgery, or had been ill. Then follow it up by asking how that went, or how they are feeling now. • Make and keep good eye contact. Don’t be looking around the room, watching television, or what might be going on behind the person otherwise they will think you are not interested and will move away. • Learn to ask good questions. This makes for interesting conversation and people will always respond to that. • Don’t fidget and fiddle with things because once again it appears that you are not interested in the person you are trying to converse with and they will think you want to get away. • Look for those sitting or standing off by themselves and try to engage them in conversation to.
Have you ever had those awkward silences in conversation with someone because you don’t know what to say? Maybe you are like me and hundreds of other people who have felt kind of shy and intimidated when it comes to keeping a conversation going or even in getting one started. I’m rather shy by nature and have made some serious fo-pahs in conversation but set my mind on learning the art of conversation so that I would not embarrass myself or others.
• If you need to keep moving around to talk to others and are finding it hard to get away from someone who does love to talk (usually about themselves), just say, ‘Let me introduce you to ……………….., I think you two will have a lot in common.’ Then introduce them to someone else in the group but give them a starting point in conversation –For example: ‘This is …………..and he also enjoys the football, both to play it and watch it. He’s a keen Magpies supporter.’ Then you have given them something to begin with and you can simply extricate yourself. (DG)
