Getting Bigger than the Problem:

Apparently there are two types of people in this world: Optimists and pessimists. The litmus test for which one you are is the following question – “Is the glass half full or half empty?” What I never understood was why there wasn’t a third option. Why didn’t people just fill up the glass instead? That makes sense to me. Just take the ‘half way there glass’ to the nearest tap and top it up! Then you have a full glass! No drama. No need to assess whether you err on the side of negativity or peppy, Pollyanna-like optimism.

I have some bad news for you. You will face adversity. You will deal with people who harass and intimidate you. You will likely face financial difficulty. You won’t always be 100% healthy. Relationships have peaks and troughs. Not everyone is going to like you all the time. In the wise words of the infamous Ned Kelly, “Such is life.” When faced with this reality an optimist would say “Every cloud has a silver lining. The sun will soon come out.” A pessimist would say “Of course. Of course bad things happen to me.” I want to add a third option to mix. You can be an optimist, a pessimist or an innovative realist.

how the person works. I once had a superior who liked to pick faults in everything I did. How did I fix it? Two things: 1) Asked her for advice on things even when I didn’t need it. 2) I purposefully put mistakes in so she had something to highlight. (Cheeky, I know). It served to make her feel needed and hey presto, I had a fantastic working relationship with someone who would otherwise make life really difficult for me. Some people just need to be needed. If you can master this skill of finding their motivation, you can become a stronger, smarter, more innovative and resilient person. All of a sudden conflict isn’t always a bad thing. It can become an avenue for you to learn, practice and master the art of managing adversity.

What is an innovative realist? They look at the problem not as road block but as an opportunity to grow, learn and get bigger than that problem. I was chatting with a friend this week who said this: “I went through a patch of burnout. It was the best thing that happened to me. It wasn’t a bad patch but it was enough to make me understand what some people have to deal with. I am a better, stronger, more empathetic person because of it. And I have learned to listen to my body and respect my limitations.” Imagine that! Being thankful for a patch of ill health! That’s a new idea! But it really made me think about how we can apply this idea to other areas of life. How often have you faced off with an adversarial personality in the workplace? It is so easy to head back to your desk, fuming and uptight, and let this person derail your day. How often have you stuttered out a nervous answer to a demanding question from an intimidating person? I have found over the years that it is so darn easy to let adversity or adversarial people get under my skin. When faced with opposition, angst or intensity, it is so easy to react in-kind. This however, only serves to inflame the situation. Friends, I believe it is time to move beyond the old “Optimist/Pessimist” paradigm. Life will hand you lemons. But there are a million things to do with them!

Keep workplace conflicts about work.

This is a hard one, but realise that we are territorial animals by nature! When someone encroaches on our territory we can take it really personally. A key to workplace conflict is this: make it about the job. Try to leave personality out of it. Even in relationships, we can lose our objectivity and make each other the problem. Then arguments quickly digress from issue based arguments to person based arguments. This is where the damage is done. Rather than turning swords on each other, learn to accurately diagnose the problem, then turn your swords on that not on each other.

Think like a hurdler, not a sprinter.

Here are some tips to help: Faced with a bully? Think about the motivation.

Most of the time when we are faced with a bullying, harassing or intimidating person our first instinct is often to get on the defensive. Let me suggest an idea to you: Often bullying or harassment arises out of insecurity or difficulty in the life of the perpetrator. A calm, caring but assertive response can help to ease the tension and reinforce that you can’t be pushed around. Of course there are severe situations when you need a third party to intervene and mediate, but if you can nip it in the bud before it gets there, do it. It can help if you can have a think about

This metaphor helped me a lot. If a sprinters goal is speed, they run a smooth track, free of obstacles. The hurdler deals with obstacles on purpose. They are not a downside, but rather a part of the course set in front of them. I cannot count the amount of times where I have sat around a project steering committee and had members throw up obstacle after obstacle. It isn’t always practical to carry blind optimism into a meeting and just claim that everything is going to be okay. Rather, I like to write out all the obstacles to success and then say to the group, “Right, now let’s reverse engineer this thing. Let’s find a way through. Put on your innovative thinking hats.” Do you know what? There is such a sense of achievement when you get over those hurdles and get to your desired finish line.

So it’s your choice what you are: An optimist, pessimist or an innovative realist, who takes reality and all its curveballs and finds a way to make it work. You become stronger, more resilient, more assertive and creative. And maybe one day, you might even look in the face of difficulty and say “Alright. Bring it. I am coming out of this a stronger person.” (CH)

Learn proactive resilience:

I am a campaigner for this one. Resilience is often thought of as bouncing back from bad stuff. But this is only half of it. Why are we only trying to repair our weaknesses when we could also be building our strengths? Give that a go for a change. This is the bit where we make sure we have a full glass instead of a half full or half empty one.

Don’t forget the lesson:

In the somewhat irritating words of Marcia Hines, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” The key to being a stronger person is to learn the lesson from adversity and even be thankful for it. But so often we go through the trials and then forget what it was that we learned. Hence we find ourselves taking another ride on the merry-go-round and making the same mistakes. It’s not a bad idea to keep a journal. It helps you articulate and remember the lesson.

I actually have a coin in my purse as a reminder. It’s a Malaysian coin that I can’t spend in Australia and it serves as a reminder that there are always two or more ways of looking at things. Before deciding on a way to handle difficulty, flip the coin. Force yourself to look at it a different way. Now flip the coin again. Is there another way you can tackle this? Our first instinct is not always the right one. If we can look at an issue from a range of different vantage points, we can often find more innovative, positive, creative ways past it.

Staying on the Fitness Wagon As a fitness trainer, I spend a lot of

my time doing fitness assessments and plans for people who want to lose weight, get fit or tone up. Sadly, I see many of these clients’ months later and they haven’t done anything. The excuse is always the same: “I couldn’t get motivated.” Many people go and set up the gym membership and pay the big bucks to get their body on track. Unfortunately, getting a fitness plan done and buying a gym membership doesn’t make the pounds fall away. All it does is sponsor the gym. Prime example: my parents. I am sure the local gym is very appreciative of your generosity but you definitely aren’t getting your money’s worth. So much for the thought that getting organized keeps you motivated! So how do we get motivated and stay that way? There won’t always be an upcoming wedding or a looming function when you have to squeeze into a killer dress. The sunny weather won’t always scare you into Bikini/Speedo readiness. Seriously though, you don’t just want to be skinny for one day. Your body needs you to be fit and healthy, ummm…ALWAYS! You might think “Easy for you to talk about motivation. You are a fitness trainer. You live this stuff.” Wrong! I do live this stuff but the motivation doesn’t always come easy. For instance, I am training to be a power-lifter and I have only just started lifting weights after eight months. Hence my power-lifting weights are tiny! I have a one repetition maximum! For most people, they could do twenty power-lifts easily. It is here that motivation comes in. The other day I was going for my one rep maximum in Deadlift form and I was struggling to lift 55 kilos. It just so happens that my colleague is the Australian Deadlift champion for his age group! Here I am struggling with 55 kilos while he is just struggling with 220 kilos. Yeah. Humbling. While I was going for my one Deadlift and whining about how hard it was, someone pointed out that the back of my shirt had big bold letters saying “Believe!” So that’s what I did. And I lifted 60 kilos! Somebody motivated me. They reminded me that I actually can do it. And so can you! What we believe so often dictates what we achieve. This brings me to my top motivation tips. When you first set foot into the gym, you need to decide that it is time to change, to embrace the change, know that it will be a challenge but that you are determined to work through it. You might want to think about getting a training partner to keep you accountable. This could be a friend, partner or fitness trainer. It doesn’t

matter as long as they help keep you focused and don’t listen to your excuses. Grab someone who will drag you to the gym on your down days and make sure it is someone who will let you drag them to the gym on their down days. Many Australians are team players. We don’t want to let our mates down. How easy is it to let ourselves down though? Fitness is for everyone. I don’t care what you think. It is true. You can make your own team to help keep you on track.

So you have got your partner. But then you get to the door of the gym and you are sweating already because you are nervous. Gyms, to you, are scary places. In reality, they are not. It is literally a room with equipment in it and the people in it are like minded and care about their physical health. We are all on a journey. We are just at different places. Now can I level with you on something? Don’t worry about the mirrors and the beefy dudes lifting their massive weights. None of them will be looking at your wobbly bits. The only people they are checking out in the mirror are themselves! (That is just my blanket observation. Not always true, but if it makes you feel better, use it!) So breathe in! Breathe out! Walk through the door. The gym is your friend. It’s there to help you. Take advantage of it. I always say physical health is 80% diet and 20% gym. You need both. You can’t reach 100% without both factors working. So a bit of diet accountability is a good thing. My sister has a coke habit. (The DRINK, people!) She wanted to kick the habit but it was always ‘next week’ or ‘I will just give myself one a day.’ But she made me her fitness partner and now when she reaches for the bottle in the drinks fridge, guess whose voice she hears in her head. And guess who is now an avid ‘water only, no soft drink’ person. Winner winner! Staying accountable to someone makes the world of difference.

There are simple things that we can do or change that can make a big impact on our nutritional health. First of all, eat breakfast for heavens sake! Don’t make it just toast with jam. Think big and nutritious. Next, don’t starve yourself until lunch. Have a snack in between. Of course, make it a healthy one.

Eat lunch and why not bring back a trusty salad sandwich preferably on multigrain rather than white bread. It’s too processed for my liking. Let your body do the work of digesting it. Digestively speaking, processed food is lazy food and not nutritious. The closer to its source that food is, the more benefit you will get from it. What do I mean? Don’t drink the orange juice if you have the option to eat the orange. Now, don’t starve yourself between lunch and dinner. Plan your snack for the afternoon so that when the hunger pangs strike mid afternoon, you don’t find yourself running for the sugary snacks. You don’t have to wait until you are hungry to eat. Waiting until you are hungry to eat is like waiting until you have a dehydration headache to drink water. Eating regular, healthy, moderate sized portions with breakfast being the biggest will keep your metabolism firing on all cylinders. I like to aim for five meals a day so I am eating every 2-3 hours. I don’t have anything to eat between dinner and bed because, well frankly, I like my hips as they are and I don’t want my late night snacks to take up residence on them. Lastly, and I cannot put too finer point on this, DRINK WATER! Drink lots of it. Bear Grylls says two to three litres per day. And you wouldn’t argue with Bear would you? CD REVIEW

Carrie Underwood:

Barry Southgate:

Play On

Carrie has become a household name in the country music genre and has sold over 2 million copies of her third studio album, Play On. She has come a long way from winning American Idol and is the most successful idol winner to date. She co-wrote most of the songs for this album and that’s an encouraging thing as many artists have become rather formulaic in their approach, to churn out safely processed hits! Blake Boldt of 9513 (Country Music) graded the album 3 out of 5 stars. He states, “Underwood’s third disc, Play On, starts promisingly, with ‘Cowboy Casanova’, an ode to a hard-to-keep lothario, plows along to a grungy electric guitar laced with a curling pedal steel line. At her best, Underwood excels at handling the finest storytelling that Nashville has to offer. The album’s strongest track is ‘Someday When I Stop Loving You’, a brooding tune framed beautifully by her delicate performance, while ‘What Can I Say’, collaboration with sibling trio Sons of Sylvia, is a simple, elegant declaration of longing.” He added that, “the remaining 45 minutes, though, are more Hallmark than honky tonk. Play On is a tastefully-done pop pleasure, with little of the pretentious production that gutted much of her first two discs. Play On, though saddled with its share of loose songwriting, is a convincing reminder of a blonde, budding talent.” This is a solid album with some truly great tracks and the deluxe edition comes with a whopping 20 songs to enjoy! (MR)

Epitome

As we all know first impressions are vital and in turn leave long lasting impressions. I was pleasantly surprised when I attended my friend’s wedding and none other than Barry Southgate and band were the live entertainment for the night! ☺ Speaking of long lasting impressions, the wedding was close to 2 years ago and I still remember singing along to and grooving the night away to some classic and original songs. What I love about Barry is that he is a truly soulful, honest and inspiring artist. He is genuine and has such a down to earth appeal that so many artists are lacking these days. Original is also another way to describe Barry Southgate’s new 5 track EP, ‘Epitome’ which sums up the album well, meaning Quintessential (Barry at the top of his game). All songs were written and performed by Barry and one of my personal favourites is ‘Don’t You Think?’, a feel good song with nice guitar riffs and a smooth beat. His voice is reminiscient of a cross between Guy Sebastian and Stan Walker with a 90’s sound that’s very welcome and unmistakable! He is a breath of fresh air and each new song seems to build on the one before giving you that wonderful lift throughout the day. ‘Summer Night’ has a real Neyo feel with great vocals and beautiful lyrics. A wonderful fusion of pop and soul music with R&B highlights throughout. Enough said, this is a must have album. (MR)

MOVIE REVIEW

Abduction

I can hear the fanatical screams of teenage girls already as I review star, Taylor Lautner’s new movie, Abduction. To be honest though, this kid can actually act and credit should be given where it’s due. He’s not just good looking but has great emotion and connectivity in this film, in particular with co star Lily Collins (Karen Lowell, his neighbour in the movie). Taylor is well known for his character Jacob in Twilight but said that he wanted to show a different side to himself, that Jacob wasn’t the be all and end all of who he is or what he’s capable of. Taylor’s character, Nathan Price, has always felt that something wasn’t quite right with his life and his feelings were correct as he discovers a childhood photo of himself with Karen.

Higher Ground

Some have hailed Higher Ground as a work of art, a fresh perspective on a woman’s rise and fall of her faith in God. Vera Farmiga (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Up in the Air) makes her directional debut with this film which she also stars in, on a high note she manages to divert the focus being entirely on her character as so many first time actors turned directors do. Vera being the secure person that she is has generously shared screen space with some other great actors which even include her younger sister Taissa Farmiga who plays the young Vera (Corinne) in the movie. Taissa is also making her acting debut in Higher Ground and from the looks of her performance, she has a very

The photo appears to be from a missing person’s website and when Karen updates it to what the child would look like today, shocked and confused, Nathan realises that it’s actually him! So what’s Nathan’s true identity and who is his father? Well you’ll have to watch the movie and see for yourself. The tension then mounts as he realizes his parents are not his own and his life is a lie, carefully fabricated to hide something more mysterious and dangerous than he could have ever imagined. Just as Nathan starts to piece his life together, he becomes the target of assassins which forces him on the run with Karen. Government operatives are also hot on his tail as he realises the only way to survive is to take matters into his own hands. (MR)

bright future ahead of her! ☺ Corinne is on a spiritual journey throughout the movie that begins with her searching out meaning and purpose as a teenager. Compelled by the rousing sermon by Pastor Bud (Bill Irwin), she declares her new found faith. Corinne sees her relationship with God as an arranged marriage that requires years to develop and is filled with trials and tribulations, hardship and heartbreak. After some traumatic experiences which include the failing marriage of her parents, Corinne then falls for a handsome young man and ends up falling pregnant to him eventually marrying him in the process. She then meets some unsavoury friends that lead her off the path so to speak. She then comes to a crossroad in her life... Which way will she go? (MR)

Naturally, an occasion of this sort calls for one to dress to the nines. Of course the hard part is deciding on the perfect dress. Floor length is always red carpet worthy and you can keep your accessories minimal and your makeup flawless to keep the focus on your dress. Love to accessorise – then go for a strapless dress that you can pear a statement necklace and a statement ring with a pop of colour. If you don’t go for a necklace then opt for some sparkling bracelets and add a ring on the opposite hand. Of course you can rock a short dress in the same fashion as well as being able to add some killer heals. Remember - it’s not about how much the dress costs, it is finding what suits you and fits your body perfectly this will always outdo an ill fitting expensive outfit. Think of your best asset and highlight. Hope you enjoy and remember the secret to chic is to appear as if you didn’t have to try too hard. (KA)

Routine city 14

is Not a Dirty Word Routine – no, it’s not a dirty word! Routines don’t need to be dull and boring. In fact, they need to be quite flexible and can be rather fun. It is better to make your routine work for you, rather than you work for the routine. It can be all too easy to become enslaved to a routine, but I think life is meant for living and enjoying, don’t you?

REFLECTIONS ment. Your organiser would probably have different sections to mine but that’s the beauty of making one up yourself – it suits your needs exactly. To make one up yourself costs around $5.00 plus whatever folder or organiser cover you decide to use.

If you and your family are passing each other like ships in the night all going in different directions why not put a wall planner up where all can see it so that family members can all pencil in what they have on when and where. Our family planner has Friday night pencilled in as family night so rarely do we ever book anything else in on that night otherwise it makes it hard to all catch up and just be together if it is not scheduled in. We all enjoy our Friday nights together – sometimes we might have a pizza and a movie or curry and games or we may even all go out together somewhere. These nights can also be used just to have I like to use an organiser for my busy schedule to help me remember all ima meal together, plan a family holiday together, read a classic, or brainstorm portant appointments and dates. It has been an invaluable tool for planning my together about all kinds of things relevant to you and your family. weeks and months. Everything is pencilled in then I can see at a glance what I have on, when and where. Birthdays, anniversaries, special events and school Don’t forget when scheduling things in that you schedule in some time out to do holidays are also noted. In these days of technology many people have iPhones something you really enjoy. I used a zip up organiser pouch with a pocket on the front for my pens, eraser, sharpener and sticky notes. Inside the organiser were two rings and I also made some A5 page dividers from So why not get busy with your computer today and card and a pack of small index tabs so I could divide up each of my section. FOOD REVIEW

RECIPE

Saké

A recipe is a set of instructions that describe how to prepare or make something, especially a culinary dish.

If you haven’t noticed already by the restaurant name, yes, it’s another Japanese restaurant. I can’t help it! Japanese food is so fresh, clean and flavoursome and at most times, pretty to look at! Out of the restaurants I’ve been through this past year I must say Saké has got to be my favourite one. I went with a good friend of mine and we opted to get hot and cold starters and sushi and sashimi instead of a main each, which was a great idea.

Saké Restaurant 12 Argyle Street The Rocks, Sydney 2000 www.sakerestaurant.com.au

MISO SOUP INGREDIENTS: • 2 teaspoons dashi granules • 4 cups water • 3 tablespoons miso paste • 1 (8 ounce) package silken tofu, diced • 2 green onions, sliced diagonally into 1/2 inch pieces

We started with beef tataki ($20). We also had spider maki ($18), which is an inverted sushi with deep fried soft shell crab made to look like a spider. Then we had what I thought was the best item on the menu, prawn dumplings ($17). The prawn mousse was wrapped in thinly sliced gyoza wrappers then steamed. The only let down of the night, and it’s only because I’m a chef myself, was the kingfish jalapeno ($22). It came preprepared and straight out of the fridge and some of you guys know that if you leave thin pieces of fish long enough in the fridge, they tend to stick to the plate, which in our case they did.

METHOD: 1. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine dashi granules and water 2. Bring to a boil 3. Reduce heat to medium, and whisk in the miso paste 4. Stir in tofu 5. Separate the layers of the green onions, and add them to the soup 6. Simmer gently for 2 to 3 minutes before serving (SY)

But guys seriously, it’s not all that expensive even though it’s down in The Rocks. It is every penny well spent! I’d definitely go back! Can’t wait! (SY)

TRAVEL Highlights

Happy 1st anniversary, New City! So for this special occasion, I’ve decided that we should take a trip to where the culture is rich in all kinds of areas, including art, music, architecture and food. I am of course talking about France! So here are two places to visit and explore on your next trip.

Mediterranean coast. Due to Marseille’s vast history, there are many buildings and museums for you to be enchanted by, whether you’re a history enthusiast or not. Bouillabaisse (fish based soup) is a local specialty in Marseille. Lamb belly is another traditional dish, so be sure to try that out. For those looking for a different scene, Marseille is where sunlit beaches can be located. Musée d’Histoire Naturelle is a natural historic museum that houses hands-on exhibits, ensuring much fun for everyone. Musée de la Mode will provide great insight into the world of fashion. Galeries Lafayette is Marseille’s largest department store and their boutiques have plenty to offer. There is much to see in Marseille, it is after all France’s second largest city!

Next stop: Lyon! Mostly known for Marseille! Marseille, its cuisine, Lyon is an attractive city known for having excellent weather that you will definitely enjoy exploring. throughout the year, is located on the Institut Lumière commemorates the

history of cinematography and moviemaking.

And there we have some highlights to Marseille and Lyon. Hope you enjoy your holiday! (SF)

There are evening screenings available as well as historic cameras and other cinematic equipment on display. Parc de la Tête de l’Or is Lyon’s largest park, featuring a zoo and a lake – much fun for the whole family on a day out. The Ampithéâtre Gallo Romain was designed during the reign of Tiberius, the Roman Emperor, and it was used as a place to declare loyalty to Rome as well as execute people. But if you’re a modern art enthusiast, the Musée d’Art Contemporain, featuring sculptures, paintings, videos and exhibitions that change regularly, is the place for you! Local dishes include boudin noir (black pudding) and quenelles (fish or meat dumplings). Designer clothing can be found along Rue Emile Zola Rue Gasparin and Rue Président Herriot, while antique lovers will be able to shop to their heart’s content at Rue Auguste Comte. This is just a glimpse

Ferrari 458 Spider

I have never wanted a car more than this one. Its hard top brother is sensational as is, but if you’re a rich, fat banker who wants to show off your beautiful model girlfriend in your beautiful Ferrari, then this is the car for you!

OVERSEAS EXPRESS TRAVEL

It’s the drop top (Spider) version of the 458 Italia. This car has been tuned for drop top driving by sharper throttle mapping which means faster throttle response. There is a revised exhaust, which doesn’t help produce more power but more noise when you’re driving topless. The best part of the car is that it has a party trick. The 458 Spider can drop its hard top roof in 10 seconds and is lighter, stronger and better looking than its predecessor’s soft-top mechanism. Someday I will sit in traffic and one of these beauties will pull up next to me with its top down, and I will have the opportunity to see the person who I will personally loathe until the supercar pulls away from me. Jokes aside, it’s a wonderful car, a great addition and example of Ferrari doing amazing unexpected things for our coveting pleasure. (JY)

White Out

There are a lot of renovators who like to make a bold statement with colour. Colour is the single most important mood creator. When used wisely, it can lift a room to new levels of cool, or the exact opposite effect can be achieved in the hands of a Jesuit. When people say “play it safe”, the first colour you will think of is white and all of its shades like eggshell, off white, or muted white. All in all, its reputation for blandness and boring would be like a night out with an accountant. This is kind of true if you’re using it like in a safe sort of way. Take a look at images from Poliform; it’s the way we can utilize white as a bold statement, with shiny polished surfaces, great warm fluffy fabrics and matte flooring solutions that are all creating spaces that are far from boring. Simple rule of thumb is to use white in differing shades and textures to allow each object in the room to “pop” which gives them breathing space to belong in a room. Lastly, go beyond using white on just the walls and roof and use it on the floors, furniture and lighting. Together it forms a white out space. Just make sure kids don’t think it’s a room they can create their pieces of art on the walls. (JY) www.poliform.com.au

Nothing is ever to hard or difficult for Tony to negotiate and his knowledge of the industry is second to none! Every time I have purchased a new property, I could always just ring Tony and he would be there to assist. I would recommend the services of Tony and the team at Mortgage Path to you if you are looking for a personalized service from someone who really cares.

Michael Pharmacist - Business owner I was recently referred to John and Ray at Mortgage Path by my work colleague after being declined by my local Bank for an application to buy a Pharmacy business. John met up with me and discussed all my options and explained which lender was likely to approve my new pharmacy loan.
