WHAT TO DO DURING AN EARTHQUAKE?

- Set the Tone - Show Appreciation

- recipe : creme brulee - golden century

Letter from the Editor What...??? It’s May already? We are already in the 5th month of 2011? Where has time gone? Oh Lord, help us!!! LOL Recently, I had to reprogram my mind and my body... to take time to rest. Yes, probably just like you, I feel that there are so many things to do and yet so little time. Especially, if you’re a go-getter like me, sometimes you want to just go, go and go. For me, it’s not about wealth or fame but about making a difference in this life. But whatever reason we have driving us to pursue things passionately, we must be careful that it doesn’t take a toll on our physical health, mental health and also spiritual health. It can even affect the people around us in a negative way; our friends, family, colleagues and loved ones. I had to remind myself that life is a marathon and not a sprint. Things need time to grow and bear fruit of success. Babies grow in the mother’s tummy, seeds grow in the ground and process is just as important as the result. So, be wise, work hard but do take it easy okay! Stay POSITIVE, stay HEALTHY and these are some of the keys to SUCCESSFUL LIVING! What are you thoughts about this? Email me at editor@newcitymagazine.com Enjoy reading the MAY 2011 Edition of NEW CITY Magazine. Cheers, Ben Irawan Editor of NEW CITY Magazine editor@newcitymagazine.com

Excellent. Congratulations on an excellent publication. I can see that a lot of work has gone into getting it to where it is today. All the best for the future. Had a quick look through and it’s a great looking mag. Haven’t read the articles yet, but it looks very promising! (Victor) Floods, earthquakes and other natural disasters are not new concepts, having occurred since the early stages of the development of the Earth. In fact, the recent spate of natural disasters is nowhere near as devastating as previous ones. Granted, there would have been more than a few people who shouted “the end is nigh” when those disasters occurred, but here we are hundreds/thousands of years later. Furthermore, the level of radiation being absorbed over a day at 50 km away from the Fukushima plant was similar to that of a mammogram. Perhaps I should warn neighbouring countries every time my mother gets an examination for fear of “spreading harmful radiations [sic]”. By the time the very same radiation being emitted from Fukushima hits Australia, the level would be so weak that you’d be (relatively) more at risk from sleeping in a bed with another human being. Providing advice on how to deal with emergencies is prudent, but taking an apocalyptic view on current affairs and spreading Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) is not. “Nothing is certain but death and taxes”, as the old, sardonic proverb goes. Certainty has never been a part of life, whether you were living a millennium ago or now. (Joshua)

Solomon Haumono: “YOU CAN’T QUIT!” They used to call him “Captain Feathers.” When you catch a glimpse of the Tongan Australian, who stands at 6”2 and has his eyes firmly set on the world heavy weight boxing title, you have to attribute that name to sarcasm. Solomon Haumono has been a steady presence on the NRL field since he started off with Manly-Warringah back in 1994. In 2000, he took a short break from Rugby League to try his hand at the sport of boxing. “It was a lifetime love for me” Says Haumono, whose father Maile is a former Australian Heavyweight champ. Solomon fought 8 times during his first foray into boxing. And it seems he was a natural. He won all of his heavyweight contests and briefly held the title of NSW Heavyweight Champion before returning to the familiar turf of Rugby League in 2002. But he is back boxing now and this time it looks like it’s for keeps. “It’s something that I am inspired to do. I feel that at this time, it is the right thing for me. I have just had sort through some injuries that gave me an understanding of what patience is truly is about. That isn’t to take anything away from my rugby career, in fact I am really very grateful, but boxing is a lifetime love of mine.”

cipline that drives the man now. Time has changed his perspective and faith has played its part. The Solomon Haumono you meet now is undoubtedly different from the young athlete who fell into the familiar traps of drinking and drug taking during his younger years. And he says it’s no wonder athlete’s across the all football codes fall into similar traps. “It’s a mental attitude and a culture. The culture influences the attitude,” he says.”A lot of the players are straight out of school and into something they worked hard for. Then they get shown things they have never experienced. Clubs are trying to look at these things and steer the young players away from this cancerous culture, this ego fed feeling of invincibility. But it’s not usually until the players get older that they realise that’s not what it’s really about. Until the chain breaks, clubs are going to have this trouble.” Perhaps this is part of his motivation to carry the title of heavyweight champion: “Hopefully by standing up and winning a championship and being a different kind of person, I can help break that chain” he says. But he knows he can’t do it alone. Armed with life experience, natural talent, faith and a heart for the

He was playing for a club in England when the offer came to cross back to boxing and had one year still left on the contract. But of the decision to cut the contract short and switch sports again, he says “there was just something driving me from within.” Once known as being among Rugby Leagues hardest hitters, Haumono is no stranger to pain or hard work. But it isn’t brute strength or tough mental dis-

younger generation, Solomon and his wife Margaret are setting their sights on influencing young people for the better.

The Haumono’s have a sports management group of young athletes they have mentored and guided from young ages. You can hear the pride in Solomon’s voice as he says they are starting to see some results and opportunities now. “These opportunities that we have been given are treasures to be shared” he says, speaking of the time he has spent mentoring young athletes. When asked what the post-boxing future holds, Solomon speaks of his desire to build a youth community centre and be a positive mentor for young people, not just athletes. “I have done many bad things. I set a bad example. It’s been spread on the news. I see what affect that has had.” But he speaks of the last five years as if it were a rebirth of sorts. “I haven’t touched a drop of alcohol and there have been no drugs. None of this would be possible without Jesus Christ. I know there is a responsibility.” Clearly it isn’t just a responsibility but also passion for the proud father of four. (Ironically, some of his

much loved family time is spent training his son Maile, who is showing enthusiasm and talent for boxing. Perhaps we could be seeing the beginnings of a Haumono boxing dynasty.)

Karl Marx is th e father of comm unism for which the Sov iet Union is most famou s – but in fact, he never stepped foot in Russia .

But for the immediate future, he has his eyes firmly set on the heavyweight title. At age 35, he still has time up his sleeve and likes to put challenges in front of himself. The goal for the next 18 months is to be in the top ten. “By age 38, I should be able to stay around for another couple of years, so I am close. I just have to keep free from injury and keep learning what I am learning at the moment. I have really stepped up in learning the science of the sport.” So what is in the mind of a champion? What allows them to go the distance and push through the pain? Surprisingly, the first thing that sprang out of his mouth wasn’t a Rocky Balboa boxing cliché but rather gratitude for the people in his life and not just those in sport. He speaks of the tragic death of his older brother and then his cousin’s death from illness.

Convicted by the English, Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. One of the main reasons for her execution was dressing in male clothing. Witnesses testified that Joan wore pants because she feared guards would rape her.

“Hello” wasn’t always the first thing said over the phone. The first operating phone service was established in 1878 and the formal greeting back then was “ahoy”.

“There are things I learned from them, aspects of their character that I carry with me inside and I always will. The way my cousin fought…” “In boxing, you have to push the barriers of the body and the mind. It is all on you. It’s all on your onus. There are so many things in my life that get affected by that: time with my wife and kids, not being able to do things a normal father would do. That is the cost. When you are getting in training mode and sparring, it is extreme and there is possible injury. I have come out of sparring sessions having been knocked down but you learn from it. Sometimes you get migraines and can’t eat. There are things that you have to give up but it’s on the way to being the ultimate champion. You know deep down that even though you feel all this, there will be a reward. There is goodness that can come from this. We have so many plans that we believe have been inspired. My wife has been by my side through all of this and we continue to journey together.” The life of Solomon Haumono shows that the winning mindset doesn’t end with athletics. “People have different circumstances to face, but man you just can’t quit. My mum just recently had a major stroke. We were told she would die in the next day or two, but things turned around. She never gave up the fight and she is still with us.

“Man, you can’t quit. Whatever you are doing, you have to continue that fight, whatever that fight may be.” (CH)

WHAT TO DO DURING AN

EARTHQUAKE? T he article below is an extract from Doug Copp’s article on the “TRIANGLE OF LIFE”. He is the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI ), the world’s most experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an earthquake. Doug Copp has crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams from 60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries and he is a member of many rescue teams from many countries. He was the United Nations expert in Disaster Mitigation for two years and have worked at every major disaster in the world since 1985, except for simultaneous disasters. The first building he ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under its desk. Every child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by lying down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene -- unnecessary. Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving a space or void next to them - NOT under them. This space is what he calls the ‘triangle of life’. The larger the object, the less it will compact. The less the object compacts, the larger the void and the greater the probability that the person using this void for safety will not be injured. The next time you watch collapsed buildings, on television, count the ‘triangles’ you see formed. They are everywhere. It is the most common shape, you will see, in a collapsed building.

TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY: 1) DO NOT JUST DUCK AND COVER.

Most people who simply ‘duck and cover’ when a building collapses are crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are crushed.

2) CURL UP IN A FETAL POSITION NEXT TO A BULKY OBJECT. Cats, dogs and ba-

bies often naturally curl up in the fetal position. You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety and survival instinct. You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a bed, next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.

3) WOODEN BUILDINGS ARE THE SAFEST DURING AN ERTAHQUAKE. They

are the safest type of construction to be in during an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs.

4) IF AN EARTHQUAKE OCCURS WHILE YOU’RE SLEEPING, SIMPLY ROLL OFF THE BED. A safe void will exist around the

bed. Hotels can achieve a much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on the back of the door of every room telling occupants to lie down on the floor, next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake.

5) AS BEST AS POSSIBLE, TRY TO GET OUT FROM THE BUILDING THROUGH DOORS OR WINDOWS. If an earthquake

happens and you cannot easily escape, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a sofa, or large chair.

6) DO NOT TAKE COVER UNDER A DOORWAY. Most people

who get under a doorway when buildings collapse are killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the door jamb falls forward or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jamb falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be killed!

7) NEVER GO TO THE STAIRS. The stairs have a different ‘moment

of frequency’ (they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs can be horribly mutilated by the stair treads. Even if the building doesn’t collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not damaged.

8) GET NEAR THE OUTER WALLS OF BUILDINGS OR OUTSIDE OF THEM. It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked.

9) IF YOU’RE INSIDE A VEHICLE, GET OUT AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road

above falls in an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles. Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them.

10) LARGE STACKS OF PAPER DON’T COMPACT. I discovered that paper doesn’t compact, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices. Large voids are found surrounding stacks of paper.

Spread the word and save someone’s life... The entire world is experiencing natural calamities so be prepared! ‘We are but angels with one wing, it takes two to fly.’ In 1996 they made a film, which proved that this survival methodology to be correct. The Turkish Federal Government, City of Istanbul, University of Istanbul Case Productions and ARTI cooperated to film this practical, scientific test. They collapsed a school and a home with 20 mannequins inside. Ten mannequins did ‘duck and cover,’ and ten mannequins used the ‘triangle of life’ survival method. After the simulated earthquake collapse they crawled through the rubble and entered the building to film and document the results. The film, showed there would have been zero percent survival for those doing duck and cover. There would likely have been 100 percent survivability for people using the ‘triangle of life’ method. This film has been seen by millions of viewers on television in Turkey and the rest of Europe, and it was seen in the USA, Canada and Latin America on the TV program Real TV. Hundreds Bounced to a Fusion of US and Aussie

Hip Hop Come one, come all. And many did on Saturday the 9th of April 2011 to Arncliffe Community Life Centre, the proud hosts of The Legacy Tour, featuring hip hop music and artists from America and Australia. The star of the night was Sevin, a hip hop artist from Sacramento, California. During his career, he has worked and gained respect from other artists such as Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Lecrae, Lupe Fiasco and Quincy Jones. He is also a song writer, public speaker and track composer. Careful planning and preparation was taken in the lead up to this community event. A team of artists and volunteers worked hard to transform the homely auditorium into the style of a ghetto street alley, complete with ripped posters and graffiti covering the walls to give it an authentic feel. The skilled chef prepared the snacks for the evening, while the sound team made sure the equipment was running smoothly. At 6:30pm, the doors were open for those who wanted to be part of the scene and they were definitely in for a good show. Sevin was joined by Australian hip hop crew, The Commission, made up of members Genesiz, Protégé, Reconsyle, D4C, Tim Turner

and Grasp. Triple threat, Troy “Spear-Z” Speirs, who raps, dee jays and emcees also made the night a memorable one. EQ, a promising band on the rise, performed their own selection of songs, including a cover of No One by Alicia Keys but with a twist. Each performer had their own talent and uniqueness to present to the audience in their engaging and interactive performances. Dancers were given the opportunity to showcase their gifts in the middle of the dance floor.

REFLECTIONS Set the Tone

When we are in a relationship for too long, we have the tendency of taking each other for granted. We expect our wife to do the washing and our husbands to throw rubbish out of the house, and the list goes on. Often when things are not being done around the house, we can get easily upset and ask the favour with a frustrated tone in our voice. We often forget that the other person is actually doing us a favour and that no one is anybody’s slave to do it. No matter how frustrated you are, it is worth to always make the effort to ask in a nice way, so that the other person will not feel that you are bossing them around. Set the tone of your voice so that the other person will do it willingly without any hesitation. Try it today. (CI)

Show Appreciation In the last week, my 3 year old son has been having a bad cough, and one of the things that had been soothing his throat was warm water with honey. So for the past few days he has been waking up in the middle of the night asking for his “honey water”. I was gladly doing it for him in the first few days, but after nearly a week of having broken sleep and fighting tiredness of having to go downstairs to the kitchen to make it for him, one night I was doing it almost unwillingly, thinking whether or not this is going to be an ongoing pattern. When I went back upstairs to his room, he let out a big cough, smiled at me and said “I love you Mummy...” then gave me a big, long hug. Suddenly, all my tiredness was gone in an instant. I learnt that night that a little appreciation goes a very long way. (CI)

NEUTRAL WITH SOME BANG!

zanotta sacco gatti paolini teodoro chairs

It’s the autumn winter season now, and you’re a fan of neutral tones, but you’re scared of it being boring and too neutral and cold. The best thing to do is to place a little character to your palette, things that dictate it’s your home. Not like a showroom or gallery, void of character like some folks strive for, that’s very modernist and impersonal.

What to do? Well…if you’re into art, make, sure your favourite artists are hanging on the walls. If an Andy Warhol is way too much for your budget, get a print of his work or a beautiful book on his works and display the book on your coffee table. You know that lovely ceramic nick knack you bought in Europe? Don’t hide it away, bring it out to show who you are, its all about individual pieces that set your place apart.

don’t just dream it,

do it!

Streets are crowded with stalls and markets, bright colours and smells; people are calling and jostling for the best bargains. Ancient church bells can be heard in the distance and noisy groups of young children push through the crowd and lick their sticky fingers after making short work of their latest treat. Camels grunt and spit as their handlers and owners direct them along the windy tracks leading out of the city...

Our imaginations are wonderful things but the real thing is pretty good to. For as long as I can remember I always had a desire to travel to some exotic places and see a bit of the world. I particularly wanted to go to Egypt and Israel. The pyramids fascinate me. I would sit in my armchair and watch every news clip, movie and documentary I could on these two countries. I’d look at them and say to myself or anyone else who cared to listen, ‘I’m going to go there one day. I don’t know how, but I’m going to.’ Who was I trying to kid? I think it was only myself I was fooling. It wasn’t until I set my mind on it fully and determined in my heart that no matter what it took, it was time for me to take action to fulfil my dream. I cleaned houses, I worked doing all kinds of jobs and I saved and I saved and I saved. I picked up some brochures from the travel agents of Israel and Egypt and made a display of the pictures on my pin board in my office so it was in my face constantly. Twelve months later my flights were booked and paid for and I was packed and ready to go. If I hadn’t determined in my heart that something needed to be done, I would probably still be sitting in the armchair thinking how great it would be to go and that I must do it someday. How about you? Where is it that you want to go and what do you want to see? Are you an armchair traveller or are you a person who can determine to do it and then set about it and do it?

I had and enjoyed that trip of a lifetime and not only did I get to see Egypt and Israel, but I also got to go to Greece and Cyprus too. It was such an adventure that I will never forget. Now when I think of these places I have real images to draw from and real experiences of places and people, foods and surroundings. When I get to the end of my life I don’t want there to be any ‘if only’s’ or ‘I wish I had of,’ or ‘I really should have done this or done that.’ There were people who tried to tell me I couldn’t do it – that I’d never save enough, that I couldn’t travel alone as a woman, that it was an honourable ambition but they couldn’t see me ever doing it, etc etc etc. We can do anything once we set our mind and heart on it. Never let people tell you can’t because you can. Gosh, if I can do it then anyone can. So then, where’s it to, and when are you going? (DG)

NOT TODAY! Refresh and Recharge. With children, work commitments, spouse, and work to do around the home and yard to name but a few responsibilities, it can be difficult to find the time to do anything else but these things. Let alone try to cram in other social activities and time for ourselves to do the things we really would like to do and enjoy doing. Yes, I did say time for ourselves. This time is so very important for us so that we can refresh and recharge. With life as busy as it is these days, if you are like me, then if we don’t pencil it into our schedule it just doesn’t happen. Does this sound like your life too? There’s always others demanding our time, our energy, our resources, and our attention but we simply must make some time to just slow down, otherwise life has a habit of doing it for us. Let me give you an example – I was rushing around trying to accomplish so much in my day for over twelve months. I didn’t schedule in any time out and my thinking was that I was just too busy to take any time out…this alone should have sent warning bells off!!! But I kept going and kept pushing myself really burning the candle at both ends. Finally it was like my body just said,’ Okay, that’s it. I quit!’ Every-

thing fell in a hole and I ended up in the ICU at the hospital for just under two weeks and then another six weeks at home recuperating not able to do anything at all except sit, relax and read. My breathing was all over the place and the hospital had even called my family back in to say their goodbyes because doctors thought I wasn’t going to make it. I like to think I learnt something from this experience and now endeavour to ensure that I schedule in some time out each week to relax a bit. So I pencil a line through every Thursday in my organiser and PDA and write in ‘NOT TODAY.’ I do whatever I feel I would like to do on Thursdays now. Sometimes I might have lunch with a friend, or go out shopping for awhile, but usually it is simply a day at home to catch up on rest, little jobs that might

need doing at home, and reading. If I’m feeling weary, I will take the time to sit and read a book, or maybe even watch a movie – although I rarely watch television anyway. Even if I don’t get every Thursday at home to rest I could go for a month with just having one good day of rest. How about you? When can you slot in some time in your busy schedule for time out just for you? How about time out for you and your family? Okay, so you’re probably thinking like, ‘So if I take time out to rest, that doesn’t earn money to help pay the bills.’ No, you are right but if you and I end up like I did in hospital or laid up for a prolonged period of time we will find it even tougher then to pay the bills right? So find some time, make some time because you’re worth it and your family is worth it! (DG)

food review

The name just about says it all, Golden Century or to people who are frequent visitors… it’s GC’s. Don’t get it confused with the Gold Coast cause I can tell you now they don’t have a place like this up there! GC’s is a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown on 393-399 Sussex. Predominantly a seafood joint but they also do land animals as well. The reasons why I love going there is: 1. The food is always good 2. They open at 12pm and close at 4am. Yes, you read it right… 4 am. Which is perfect for someone like me who works late hours and needs a quick no fuss feed. The service isn’t crash hot, but my theory is… if you want good Chinese food you go to the ones where they have the rudest service and where the majority of the patrons are Asians. In saying that, GC’s used to be like that until people (mainly hospitality folk) started finding out about an Asian restaurant that is open at the wee hours of the morning. But the quality in food hasn’t dropped. Now they have a wider range of people eating at their joint especially after being recognised by The Good Food Guide people. Getting a table is easy if you book early or if you rock up between 2-4 am but otherwise you’re going to have to wait like everybody else who didn’t book a table. The prices are a tad more expensive than other Chinese restaurants but GC’s have been serving people for over 20 years. GC’s is a must for all Sydney-siders to experience whether you’re having a nice dinner with the family or after a big night out on the town. Just remember they open late!! (SY)

MOVIE r e v i ew

True Legend “The most highly anticipated genre epic!” (Beyond Hollywood) and “It opens with one of the greatest action sequences I have ever seen!” (The Observer) are two very bold statements to make for an action genre that’s inundated with loads of movies already. But wait a moment if that wasn’t enough to whet your appetite there’s more... True Legend comes to a cinema near you compliments of the creators of Kill Bill, The Matrix & Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. With that said, you know you’re in for a highly entertaining film filled with acrobatic prowess, an engaging storyline and death defying martial art fight sequences that take the best of the genre and then some! The story centers on two brothers, Su Can (Vincent Zhao) and his vengeful brother Yuan (Andy On) who returns home from war with a secret weapon up his sleeves, the deadly Five Venom Fists! Su Can has been weakened but there’s still a glimmer of hope for him as he discovers a never before seen style of martial arts that may very well be the answer to his brothers toxic fists. In returning home, Su Can has high hopes of restoring honour to his family by challenging Yuan to a colossal fight. Has Su Can got what it takes to be a true hero? Well I leave that to you to decide. This movie is also historic as it’s the first Chinese feature length movie to be filmed in 3D! (MR)

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Well, it’s a relief to know that Johnny Depp is reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in this fourth instalment in the hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean series! He nearly turned it down but I guess after being offered US$55.5 Million for it, he jumped right in. Fans will be thrilled as there are another two movies in development, which means there will be six movies in total. ☺ On Stranger Tides introduces the infamous pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and his daughter Angelica (Penelope Cruz), Geoffrey Rush returns as Captain Hector Barbossa. This time round Jack Sparrow is in search of the acclaimed “Fountain of Youth” and on the way he meets a beautiful woman from his past that could very well be his equal. Jack isn’t sure if it’s love or if she is just trying to con him to help her find the fabled “Fountain of Youth!” She forces him aboard her father’s ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge and then Jack suddenly finds himself in a real dilemma and one wild adventure. He’s at a loss as to who to fear more, the infamous Pirate Blackbeard whose ship he just boarded or the woman from his past! All in all a solid movie but I still preferred the original trilogy. It’s still worth watching though and for those diehard Jack Sparrow fans out there you are in for a real treat. (MR)

The Lion of Judah This is the sequel that takes place 30 years after the events of the popular award- winning “Once Upon a Stable” TV movie, that was released in 2004. It has improved animation and greater computer graphics mastery which really lifts the movie in terms of audience appeal and visual eye candy. It also features the voice talents of some great actors such as, Ernest Borgnine, Scott Eastwood and Michael Madsen. This time round the star of this film is none other than a Lamb named Judah who is aided by some wacky, funny and cool barnyard animals which include a rooster, pig, horse, cow, mouse and donkey. Judah the Lamb is taken as a sacrifice for the townspeople when along come some animals from a Bethlehem stable to the rescue. An incredible adventure then takes place filled with drama, danger and heroes. Jack is a teenaged donkey with an attitude and doesn’t really want to be part of the animal crew but after they get separated the hero in Jack jumps out just when they need saving and it’s the unlikely Jack that comes to their aid! Even after all the animals and Jack do their best to rescue Judah, it’s still not enough to save him. You’ll be surprised to find out who actually does save Judah and by the way is the real hero of this story and what his true identity is too. This is a wonderfully heart warming film filled with compassion and hope. A great fun-filled, action packed movie for the whole family and kids alike. (MR)

Kung Fu Panda 2 What can I say... Freakin Awesome!!! If you thought the first movie was amazing then you’re in for something special with Po the Panda’s new adventure. He’s back, He’s black, well mostly hehehe... and BIGGER than ever! The Furious Five which include Crane, Tigress, Mantis, Viper and Monkey have returned to help Po face his new enemies and protect the very existence of Kung Fu itself! You’ll be relieved to know that all the original voices for the characters have been kept, including some great new characters... which include Lord Shen (Gary Oldman), Soothsayer (Michelle Yeoh) and Master Croc (Jean Claude Van Damme). This time round Master Shifu receives a distressing message that he shares with Po about a mysterious Master that has defeated all the great Masters of the various Kung Fu styles. This sets the stage for a quest to discover the identity of this ruthless Master and bring him to justice. With mind blowing 3D Imagery, intense action, truly amazing slow motion fight scenes and a lovable storyline, this is great family fun and the sequel we’ve all been waiting for! Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson said in an interview with CinemaCon, “I’m an action fan and also now that Po has gotten his Kung Fu cred so to speak and he’s fighting alongside the furious five... you can’t do a sequel without pushing the action... He’s going to be able to do more in this movie and we also delve into Po’s past to find out who he really is!” (MR)

Justin Bieber Never Say Never: The Remixes

This CD is a great companion to the movie, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, which recently was released in 3D at cinemas worldwide! This is Bieber’s second remix album and it sounds great. The album includes remixes of popular songs from his first album My World 2.0. There are great collaborations featured on this album which include American country band Rascal Flatts, When interviewed by WSIX, lead singer Gary Le Vox said, “Justin asked us to do a duet with him on his next record. It’s actually a really good song! The kid is really talented. He plays five or six different instruments really well.” Other collaborations include, Chris Brown, Jaden Smith, Usher, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West & Raekwon. There are seven songs on this album and even though that’s a small amount of tracks, every song features great artists. What really shines through is the quality not the quantity! ☺ Sabrina Cognata of WXRK gave the album a positive review, saying “It legitimizes the teen dream... The album may only have seven tracks, but what it lacks in size it makes up for with panache (style)... the album actually has something for all walks of life and not just Beliebers... Justin Bieber isn’t exactly known for being ‘hard’ so the juxtaposition (mix) between really edgy hip-hop artists remixed with his bubble gum pop presents an interesting audio voyage that appeals to more than his core audience.” (MR)

Bon Jovi: Greatest Hits- Ultimate Collection

I remember listening to Bon Jovi as a teen and being instantly hooked to the first song I heard, which was “Livin’ on a Prayer”. Back in the early 90’s, they were the in thing and everyone knew them as a really tight rock group with amazing sounds and spectacular live shows! Not to mention their lead guitarist Richie Sambora who was listed by Time magazine as one of the greatest guitarists of all time! Well, are you in for something special with this album! There are two discs with a whopping 28 tracks in total. Disc 1 covers their entire career and also contains two new songs, “What Do You Got?” and “No Apologies.” Disc 2 features fan favourites like, “Bed of Roses” and “Keep the Faith.” It also features two new songs, “This is Love, This is Life” and “The More Things Change.” As you can see, this is one quality album and a wonderful addition to your collection. For those of you that are huge fans you will not be disappointed! After nearly three decades on the road, Bon Jovi have earned their reputation as ambassadors of American rock `n’ roll, having performed for more than 34 million fans around the globe. They are Iconic and synonymous with great quality and rich vocals, having stood the test of time. At a time where other rock bands of their era are considered outdated, they are still going strong and may just gain a few new fans along the way too! (MR)

CD review Michael Bublé: Crazy Love

Ok let’s be honest here, what’s the first thing that comes to mind when I mention the name Michael Bublé? Smooth, sexy, cool, superstar...well these are just a few ways to describe the Grammy AwardWinning artist whose Crazy Love album has gone 8 times platinum and has already sold over 2.4 million copies worldwide! This is Bublés 4th studio album and features a wide variety of tracks that are true to the Bublésque jazz and pop fusion style that we have all come to either love or admire. With 13 songs, some wonderful collaborations and Bublé co-writing tracks, “Haven’t Met You Yet” and “Hold On.” This is definitely one extraordinary album that gets better with time. Michael Bublé describes Crazy Love as the “ultimate record about the inevitable roller coaster ride of relationships... I started this record knowing I was going to record it differently than my previous ones. I dug way deeper and was more introspective on this one. Basically, I sang the truth - made each song autobiographical - and you can definitely hear the difference. I went back to the way my idols made their records. I wanted an organic feel - so people could feel like they were in the studio with me. The musicians and I all sat in the room, recorded it right from the floor and we let the sounds all come together and bleed into one another. It’s not contrived. Not too perfect. It just feels really good.” (MR)

Birthdays

Seminars

Usher: Raymond V. Raymond

This is different to the Usher that we’re usually accustomed to, but judging from sales from his previous fifth studio album, he needed to come up with something special this time round. As far as I’m concerned it paid off! There were mixed reviews but on the whole, this album skyrocketed when released back in 2010 and even earned Usher two Grammy- Awards for Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Usher’s tracks “OMG” and “More” were international sensations and I even remember dancing to the earlier during my hip hop class and thought ...man this is one groovy song! You know those songs that you just can’t help but dance to whether you can dance or not LOL. So yeah, I give props to Usher for taking a fresh approach on what he described as, “racy, risky and edgy, and sometimes about personal experiences.” He further adds, “Conceptually, the recording process mirrored the album. This time I recorded the album in both Las Vegas (for the first time) and Atlanta. In Vegas, it’s no-holds-barred, unlimited access. There are so many different places and experiences. Then I recorded in Atlanta... the city represents to me the reality of emotion and feelings. One city represents perception and the other reality.”Giving it a four out of five rating, Andrew Rennie of NOW wrote, “His sixth album proves that his ability to make grown-up hits is stronger than ever.” (MR)

MINI Cooper S ALL4

Countryman Chilli

It’s been about ten years since the first new generation MINI came out in 2001. Back then I would have been young and hip enough to own one without thinking about cramming friends or family through the back seats. Heck it was okay for me, back then, to gauge what angle my inflexible body had to bend to, to get in and out of the back seats. It’s kind of like being born again through the womb, but more difficult… no one, not even a ‘Cirque du Soleil’ performer can get in or out of the awesome MINI gracefully. Ten years on now, and I see friends and family popping out babies, getting stiffer at the knees, and carrying pre packed furniture from IKEA. MINI is a company that not only knows it’s hip buyers well, but know that their customers are getting on with life now. They are looking to buy something like, you know, an SUV or even a station wagon; but MINI buyers are the type of buyers that wouldn’t be caught dead driving one or admitting that they do.

toggle switch gear made famous with the previous generations. I was lucky to see this car at night, and I encourage all to test drive this car at night to take advantage of the delicate ambient lighting. It surrounds the car’s interior body paneling; it changed colours and really gives the interior some life. Put it like this, it’s not night club crazy… think Ivy Bar in Sydney CBD on a Tuesday night with people drinking red wine not shots, a cognac not beer. If you don’t know what the Ivy bar is, then this car is not for you.

The downside, which is not much of a downer, is its handling. It has lost a touch of that directness in its steering, a little vague, great for what it is, but I am only comparing it to its smaller hatch siblings. Not fair I know, but I have to let you know. Its suspension is softer, as you would expect. It’s not for racing, but it’s got some kick in the back with the Cooper S engine pulling with ALL4 wheels now, rather than FWD. It’s a great SUV for the not so young, hip people of this world. It’s not as roomy as a Mazda CX-7, and it is not as cheap either with the ALL4 Cooper S pushing $60k. What it does have is not ice cold, but definitely cool! (JY)

Cooper S ALL4 Countryman Chilli

- $56,050 - 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder with direct fuel injection, twin-scroll turbocharger, - 135 kW and 240 Nm with 260Nm over-boost function

They are the buyers that dress their babies better than some grown people would, with skinny jeans and gel in their kids’ hair, and designer shirts for their baby… you know the ones I’m talking about, the young professional that doesn’t realise they are old. Hence the MINI Countryman was born. At first glance this car is deceivingly large and not as ugly as what pictures portray them to be. It’s quite refined with beautiful details everywhere. The car I saw was a Cooper S model, the most powerful in the range and also the most frugal of the petrol options. You have a cool common railing in the middle that you can customize and place cups and sunglass cases on, very cool, very MINI. It still retains the oversized tachometer with optional Sat-Nav and
