The Ocean State / Rhode Island It’s All About Coastal Living

RHODE ISLAND IS ONLY 37 MILES WIDE by 48 miles long. It’s barely the size of a large cattle ranch in Texas. As the smallest state in the United States, Rhode Island has played a significant role in the history of our country. The first military action in the Revolutionary War with England was in upper Narragansett Bay with the sinking of the British Schooner the Gaspee in 1772. Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, was publicly acknowledged by Thomas Jefferson and John Adams as the originator of the concepts and principles of the First Amendment. The Industrial Revolution began in America with the development and construction of the first cotton mill. It was water powered by the Blackstone River in Pawtucket RI. The list goes on and on! Rhode Island has always been the state that could, and would, get it done.

In 1972, Rhode Island was officially named “The Ocean State,” as nowhere in the state are you ever more than 30 minutes’ drive to the sea. For such a small state landwise, incredibly, Rhode Island has 400 miles of coastal shorelines strewn with iconic communities that make for great seaside living in the “Ocean State.” The State is broken into 5 Regions: South County, Central Rhode Island / West Bay, the Capital Region Providence, Northern Rhode Island, and The East Bay. Each region is uniquely different, offering residents and visitors a flavor all their own.

There are few places anywhere in the world where coastal living can represent so many different choices. There are waterfront metro markets in Providence, historic seaside cities in Newport, sprawling beach towns across South County and island living in the East Bay and Block Island.

Staying Safe in the Sun

The sun is key to your health…but is your sunscreen?

Our bodies need sunlight. The UVB rays convert cholesterol found in our skin into vitamin D, which is required by every organ system in our body to function. It helps to keep our immune system strong, build

strong bones, prevent chronic disease, and much, much more.

However, harmful UVA rays and overexposure to UVB rays can kill skin cells and cause major damage. Just a small

sunburn destroys the top layer of our skin, similar to being burned with a hot iron, which is why wearing sunscreen is so important.

Supermodel Christie Brinkley once said,

“The best beauty secret is sunblock.” And while there’s some truth to that, not all sunscreens are created equal. And, in fact, some can do us more harm than good.

In fact, despite the fact that we’re wearing more sunscreen than ever and spending less time in the sun, skin cancer rates are continuing to rise over 4% annually. How is this possible?

THE RISKS OF COMMERCIAL SUNSCREENS

Most of the active chemical ingredients found in commercial sunscreens are estrogenic and potent endocrine disruptors, which negatively affect our hormones. In addition, these sunscreens shut down our body’s production of Vitamin D.

The chemicals found in these sunscreens also increase the number of free radicals generated in the layers of our skin. If not stopped by antioxidants, free radicals create ongoing damage, which can contribute to skin problems and skin cancer. They can also get into our bloodstream and harm other parts of our body.

Erik Kreider, founder of Kabana Skin Care states, “I often tell my customers that if they’re eating organic and still using petrochemical sunscreens, they might as well not bother because the bioburden of petrochemical sunscreen use is so gigantic compared to trace agricultural chemicals in food, literally millions of times higher.”

In 2019 and again in 2022, the federal Food and Drug Administration which governs sunscreen safety deemed only two ingredients as effective and safe to block UVA and UVB rays: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These ingredients can be found in natural sunscreens and of the two, zinc

oxide is the most effective.

Living Choices in the Sunshine State

Almost everyone has been on vacation somewhere in Florida; the state has over 125 million visitors each year from around the globe. The Sunshine State is known for great weather year-round, big cities, like the glitzy metropolis of Miami/ Fort Lauderdale and the bustling Disney attractions in Orlando, and beaches and beach communities that span

across the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf on Mexico.

But it’s also home to unique and special communities in all regions, North to South and East to West out into the Panhandle. After decades of rapid population increases, Florida now is the nation’s fastest-growing state for the first time since 1957, according

to the U.S. Census Bureau. Florida was the fastest-growing state in 2022, with an annual population increase of 1.9%, resulting in a total resident population of 22,244,823. The state added nearly 500,000 new full -time residents in the last year. Where are all these new Floridians moving to in the state? The real information may

surprise all of us.

The largest Florida populations are centered around 6 major metro markets which are almost all along the coast. The only exception to this is greater Orlando, which is central in the state. Nearly 75% of all residents in Florida live in these 6 geographical regions. Florida has over 400 cities and towns with much smaller populations and a very rural living feel for folks coming from all over the country and the world. In a state that is only basically 150 miles wide from the Atlantic to the Gulf, any beach is easily accessible. Florida is often referred to as a state of a thousand vacations. It would take almost a decade of weekend getaways to visit all the cool places in the state.

If you live here, it is easy to escape to one of these destinations for a mid-week or weekend getaway, where you can relax, but also try new activities, dine on delicious food, and shop until you drop. Think: New England and European charm—but with some of the most pristine beaches at your fingertips. What are the fastest growing cities in Florida? The newly acquired White Mountain Country Club has been rebranded as The Owl’s Nest Vineyard Course, and is undergoing a complete renovation by golf course designer Robert McNeil. Once completed, the Owl’s Nest will have 45-holes of golf and two championship courses for their guests, tournaments, weddings, and outings.
