To our Senior Community…

It is the mission of the Bennington Senior Center to engage persons 50+ in the lifelong learning process; promoting their physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing by providing social, recreational, creative and cultural programs enabling active participation in the center and community. Program costs are founded on a not-for-profit basis.

From the Director’s Desk: Getting back into the swing… I have been having some trouble with my phones. I cannot currently access voicemail; if you call and leave a message, I will not get it. Please try again at a later time or date. Although mask mandates have been lifted, COVID-19 variants are still around. Stay vigilant and use common sense strategies (wash those hands!). Luckily, this means that theatres and travel opportunities are opening up. If there is a specific place you would like to visit, or if there is a class or activity you would like to see at the Senior Center, please email

me or put your idea in the suggestion box located at the reception window. Get outside, enjoy some fresh air, plant some flowers or veggies, take a walk, drink an extra glass of water, and above all – stay healthy! A Likely New Home for the Senior Center

The Town Select Board voted on March 28 to approve the use of ARPA funds for staff to pursue the idea of renovating the newer side of Ben-Hi (auditorium, classrooms, and cafeteria kitchen) to be used as a new space for the Senior Center, Meals on Wheels, and Council on Aging programs. The initial steps include gaining site control of the building through a lease-to-purchase arrangement and proceeding with environmental testing to ensure that there are no underlying environmental or structural issues that could prevent the project from moving forward. The town is able to step away from the lease-to-purchase agreement for the next eighteen months if a problem is discovered as part of the town doing this due diligence. A number of questions and concerns have been raised about the proposed move. This article addresses those we have heard so far but the town plans on keeping Seniors involved throughout the process with regular meetings at the Senior Center (next one will be June 1, 10:00 am). The Ben-Hi building can accommodate twice the space of the current Senior Center and Meals on Wheels building. Renovations will include a new commercial kitchen for Meals on Wheels, a lounge and activity rooms for seniors, as well as storage

and office spaces. If the Senior Center does move, all members would be able to continue attending the free programs that they do now. In addition, the YMCA will be offering senior focused fitness classes at BenHi, but no one will be required to attend. Environmental issues and air quality concerns in the Ben-Hi building will be looked at from the very start. A completely new HVAC system will be installed as part of the project and would meet all current air quality standards. The SVSU had to maintain high standards for environmental quality while the junior high was still operating in the site, and remediation projects have already been done to remove asbestos and

old fuel tanks. A thorough environmental review will be part of the design and construction process for both community spaces and housing at Ben-Hi. Green Mountain Community Network buses will be adding regular stops from the current Senior Center to the new Senior Center and Meals on Wheels location at Ben-Hi. According to GMCN Executive Director Terence White, it looks like the bus would be able to stop at half hour intervals. The Town would pay to renovate the old cafeteria kitchen and auditorium at Ben-Hi to create a brandnew commercial kitchen and dining space for Meals on Wheels. This will give Meals on Wheels twice the kitchen and storage space and a large dining area to replace the cramped conditions they currently have at the Senior Center building. They will still pay a modest rent to the Town like they do for their current space. Keep your questions and concerns coming as we think about meeting the needs of our communities seniors for the generations to come! You can reach out anytime to the town Communications Coordinator Jonah Spivak via email (jspivak@benningtonvt.org) or by phone 802-445-1335 and we will continue to share concerns and questions with the public as a whole for feedback and comments.

Family Swim: We reserve “Family Swim” in our pools so that families may enjoy the pool together. This is a family only time and requires that a supervising adult accompany all children in the water. Open Swim: We reserve “Open Swim” time in our pools every day so that individuals and families can enjoy time to play, splash and swim laps together. Individuals under 13 years of age must have an adult supervising them while in the facility. Children 6 years and under must have an adult in the water with them at all times (lifeguard

may ask you to assist your child over 6 if safety is a concern). Lap Swim: Our Y has dedicated lap-swimming times throughout the day. You can always find Lap Swimming information posted on our branch’s daily pool schedules. As a courtesy, please use the “circle swim” technique when more than three swimmers are in your lane. If you are unsure of etiquette or have questions feel free to ask the guard on duty.
