Choices; sacrificing her life for her child I do think that Boland’s deeply personal poem effectively captures all of these complicated and complex aspects of being a parent. As she alludes to ancient legends, her emotions are portrayed and in a way, she draws parallels between herself and the mother of Persephone, Ceres.’ I can enter it anywhere. And have’’. The struggles which Ceres endured for her daughter mirrors the speaker’s struggles of parenthood in this poem. She too, like Ceres,(another comma her after Ceres was needed!) is protective of her child and only wishes to do her best for her daughter. ‘’I could warn her. There is still a chance’’. ‘’When she came running I was ready to make any bargain to keep her’’. Boland effectively captures the complexities of parenthood in this poem by relating the legend to her and her daughter’s close bond. Boland is aware of these sacrifices and choices made for her child, and she portrays them beautifully throughout ‘’The Pomegranate’’.
