A Journey of Giving and Growing Interview with Karen Gee, Fashion Designer and Entrepreneur Author: Sophia Jiang
I
t sounds incredible for a mother of five without a fashion qualification to make her own name in such a highly competitive arena in just two years, yet this is exactly what Karen Gee, a Sydney based fashion entrepreneur, has achieved. Acclaimed as the designer to stars, the former Mrs Australia has graciously seen her label reach immeasurable heights since its online launch in 2013, with the latest one being the opening of her first flagship store in the premier Chifley Plaza in Sydney. "Beauty isn’t based on size or shape or any of the societal concepts we are presented with, and I believe all women are beautiful and this comes from within. I am keen to incorporate this in my designs by embracing the figure in every form, ensuring my customers both look and feel beautiful in their skin, thus bringing positive changes to their lives," Karen said in a recent interview with New Land Magazine.
Elegance and Class With an eye for elegance, Karen is a strong believer in simplicity, a value which allows plenty of ways to style and add customised details to make each piece both unique and timeless. In explaining her design philosophy, Karen said, “We keep the designs very simple by nature because such simplicity in itself already presents a certain elegance and class.” The strategy of allowing consumers the option to customise proved to be a great success. The best sellers are ‘the Prestige’ and ‘the Purpose’ dresses, from which thousands of individualised pieces designed by clients have been made. The concern of turning up to an event in a dress that someone else is wearing is no longer an issue. The high quality fabric most dresses are made with is another factor unique to the label. “It feels thick yet breathable. It doesn't stretch back but contours the body and stays in place. It also makes dresses very easy to look after. They can be rolled without the hassle of ironing afterwards.”

I work on always trying to better myself as a person.” -Karen Gee Perseverance, Humility and Resilience When asked what motivated her to venture on such an incredible journey, the proud mum said she started when she entered the Mrs Australia competition in 2011 and eventually won the title in 2012 after almost one year's hard work."I wasn't very confident back then as I had been at home looking after my kids and supporting my husband for almost twenty years. But becoming part of this competition changed everything,” recalled Karen. The experience also awakened her passion and unlocked her talent, prompting her to respond to the call by creating a brand with a solid vision and purpose - to help women feel beautiful, confident and discover their self worth. “There were inevitably doubts, mistakes, and bumps along the road. I
don't ever refer to them as failures though, rather hurdles and learning points. The best option in the face of these is to take it on board and begin again with a clear heart and mind. Simply learn as much as you can, because it is definitely what will make you.” Karen also highlights the role of perseverance, humility and resilience in her journey over the past two years. “You must be ready to take on a lot of hard work, you need to persist when there are barriers, and you need to learn from each of your mistakes.” Karen also told us, “I work on always trying to better myself as a person, and love to read positive and inspiring books. The more you practice it the more naturally it is instilled into your life.” www.karengee.com.au instagram.com/karengeeofficial/ www.facebook.com/karengeeofficial

FASHION | 時尚 Now that Spring Racing fever has hit the field, there are traditions and dress codes to be adhered to around what to wear to the races.
1. It’s daytime, so wear a day dress, rather than an evening dress. 2. Don’t go crazy with the fake tan. Pale can be elegant. 3. The weather is variable, think about wearing a jacket or shrug if the weather turns cool. 4. Dresses should come to the knee, decorum is classy.

5. Head wear is usually made to sit on the right side of your head, so if you part your hair on the left, when attaching a fascinator, part it to the right so the volume of your hair balances your hat. 6. Green is unlucky colour, so avoid wearing anything green.

Headwear Fashion Wendy Scully: Lace brimmed hat is the trend
T
he trend for Spring 2015 from Chapeaux by Wendy is the elegant nature of the lace large brimmed hat and also the crown headpiece. Lighter spring materials of sinamay and lace is more appropriate to the season. To be unique, the addition of handmade flowers really make the headpiece stand out. From tiny flowers to oversized silk flower headpieces, flowers reflect the season. All pieces are designed and individually handmade by Wendy Scully. Christie Murray: Monochrome and Metallics are Trending Monochrome and metallics are trending in addition to lace, sheer finishings and orange (which is the new black this season). The general rule of an attractive hat for this season is to go with headwear that compliments, not accentuates, your facial features. For example, if you are vertically challenged, a large, flat hat could overwhelm your stature whereas a smaller percher-style hat (paired with heels!) could elongate your look. For shopping visit the website: christiemillinery.com

You feel very graceful, but different.” She struggles to explain the heart of the mystery. “It’s very deep, yet indescribable.” She pauses for a moment when asked to dig deeper, to pinpoint exactly what it feels like to do classical Chinese dance. “It’s a very Chinese feeling.” Rao, born in New York City, dances with Shen Yun Performing Arts, the most well-known and successful classical Chinese dance company in the world. Its campus is nestled in the forests of New York state at the base of the Catskill mountains. She has been with the company for years, fulfilling a wish that first seized her after she saw Shen Yun perform on stage in Washington, D.C. when she was 12.

Rao remembers thinking, “The world isn’t the way it seems right now.” The mundaneness of the world, the sense that there is nothing more to life than what we experience daily, temporarily vanished. The veil was lifted, revealing a majesty that she wanted to be part of. In the dancers’ movements, she saw hope. Deep thoughts for an elementary school student. But years later, after she completed her training and finally joined Shen Yun through its highly competitive auditioning process, her sense of the magic, majesty, and mystery of Chinese classical dance has not abated in the least. Now she is the one imparting hope. Classical Chinese dance is a profound and intensive discipline, requiring many years of training. It consists of thousands of combinations of postures, movements, jumps, spins, and tumbles, and was passed down for thousands of years in China, performed inside the imperial palace and during ancient theatre and opera. One of Rao’s favourite postures is the “Zi Jin Guan,” often referred to in English as a back leg jump. In Chinese, the characters mean “purple golden crown.” It’s like doing the splits, backwards, while standing. From standing, one leg is lifted (or kicked) behind, all the way, until it comes up to the back of the dancer’s head. The back of the head nearly touches the upper thigh. Having pulled the leg up towards the sky, one holds the posture. It requires enormous back flexibility, a great deal of strength and muscle, and steady balance. It’s usually done at the end or beginning of a dance. “It’s one of 50

those moves that catches the eyes,” Rao says. When holding herself in the Zi Jin Guan posture, Rao says that the undefinable feeling, the one that lies at the heart of her experience of dance, starts welling up in her. In the thick of a tour, it can be difficult to maintain an unshakable, positive attitude — the key ingredient for spectacular shows. Shen Yun performs either in the afternoon or the evening — or sometimes both. With two performances day after day, the crew can start to get tired. “At the end, you’re like: it’s finally the last performance! And all of a sudden you don’t feel so tense,” Rao said. Then they need to remind each other not to become too relaxed; their standards need to be equally high every time. “Treat your last performance as your first.” The lesson was learnt well from a recent season in Taiwan, when Shen Yun performed in Taipei, the capital, for six days straight, with two shows every other day. “Everybody was nervous about it. So we had a very positive mindset that ‘Okay, we have to keep going, because it’s a very, very tough challenge.’” With that mental preparation, “it actually went quite well and the time passed by very fast, because we thought we had to keep going.” 52

“You have to pay for what you do. You have to work hard for something. You have to never give up.” — Rao Deru
Maintaining stamina in such a rigorous tour schedule requires another kind of mental toughness: the ability to take harsh feedback. When someone criticized her at a company meeting while in Australia, Rao was shocked. Rebukes don’t come often for the beautiful, talented, hard-working, intelligent dancer. Although the words were unpleasant, the experience is one of her most cherished because of what it triggered: deep reflection. “It was good for me, because it allowed me to improve myself to be better. It was very memorable. I changed afterwards.” After that remark, “I was more modest, open to suggestions, more willing to listen to others’ opinions. It actually changed my personality.” During our conversation, Rao makes references to classical Chinese texts, to Jane Austen (her favourite author), and to Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 (“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day”). In the final lines of the poem, Shakespeare addresses the permanence of beautiful art. “So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, / So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.” Rao interprets it: “As long as people can breathe and can see, dance will live, and through dance, you will live.” What does this mean to the audience? “Hope!” Rao bursts out. “You tell them that the world is not going to be over, that there’s always hope. You have to believe in God, in traditional values.” Being moral matters, she explains, because “you have to pay for what you do. You have to work hard for something. You have to never give up.”

“Deep blue colours the high sky, the country plains lay boundless. As the wind bellows the grass low, cattle and sheep congregate to and fro.” These two lines, taken from a classic Chinese poem written over 1,500 years ago, depict the Mongolian plains as an illustrious estate. Being dubbed the “Horseback Nation,” Mongolians have also been known for their closeness to nature, lively song and dance, peerless archery, and horsemanship skills. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the Mongolians inhabited the primordial forests in Inner Mongolia towards the Ererguna River basins, where they lived hunter-gatherer lifestyles. Here, the Mongolian people lived in ‘yurts,’ similar to the ‘tepees’ of the Native Americans. Accompanying these ‘yurts’ was a nomadic lifestyle of herding and hunting. In the Mongolian language, Mongolia means “eternal fire.”
Migration Following 840 AD
Mongolian Dance
In 840 AD, the Uighur Empire was defeated by a Northern nation. The Uighurs migrated from the heart of the Mongolian Plateau and settled in the South. After the Uighurs left, the Mongolian ancestors left the primordial forests and moved to the heart of the Mongolian Plateau. Since then, the Mongolian people became nomadic tribes resulting in significant changes in lifestyle.
Every year, Mongolians hold a midsummer festival known as the ‘Nadaam.’ Wrestling, horse riding, and archery competitions, singing and dancing are all part of this tradition, a display of friendship between tribes and a prayer for a prosperous year. The feel of Mongolian dance is sprightly, bubbling with energy and enthusiasm. These dances emphasize big movements of the arms coordinated with the wrists and shoulders. Mongolian dances often feature bowls, wine cups, and even bundles of chopsticks as dance props. The Mongolian ethnicity is known for its affinity to horses, so the traditional dance of this nomadic group is replete with movements of the horse. Steps resembling a horse’s leisurely gallop, jumps imitating a horse rearing up, horse riding, and cowboyesque way of life, are all inspiration for impressive movements. The Mongolians also highly revere the eagle, and the large arm movements immediately recall the bird’s awesome wingspan stretching out in the boundless sky. With horses galloping on the vast plateau and eagles flying in the sky, people feel closer to nature living on the Mongolian Plateau. Gazing out towards the vast grasslands with white clouds overhead, listening to the sprightly beat of nature, feeling deeply sentimental and lost, the vast natural landscape beckons the question – where are we really from?
Mongolian Ethnic Attire Mongolians like to wear wide, calf-length gowns with buttons down their right sides, called ‘del;’ these robes feature long, wide sleeves and high collars. A matching belt around the waist serves for both form and function – the bearer looks stylish while gaining valuable back support during long horse rides. Inlaid decorations are commonly found in the hems, sleeve openings, and collars. Mongolian men prefer blue and brown, while women typically choose a wider palette of red, pink, green, and sky blue. Perhaps reflective of an outgoing temperament, Mongolian women choose colours that are often bright and bold. Unique headpieces are another source of joy in a Mongolian woman’s wardrobe. These headpieces vary by the lady’s age, region, and social status. Many Mongolian hats contain custom decorations made from red coral, agate, or turquoise.

The Three Cardinal Guides
The Significance of the Chinese Character for Three“三”
What Did the Three Cardinal Guides Represent in Ancient China?
The Chinese character for the number ‘three’ is: “三”, pronounced, ‘san’. This character refers to the laws that govern Heaven, Earth and Humanity. The top horizontal stroke of “三” represents Heaven. The bottom stroke refers to the Earth, and the middle stroke refers to human beings. According to traditional Chinese culture, all things on Earth came into existence for humans’ sake. Lao Zi, one of the most prominent philosophers in Chinese history, said: “Heaven was born, followed by Earth. Man was born on the Earth, then all things came into existence.”
The Three Cardinal Guides represented the ethical principles that everyone in ancient Chinese society adhered to. Both king and officials required themselves to act righteously. Officials respected the king, and in turn the king needed to be responsible and be considerate of his subjects. As long as the king didn’t deviate from governing with moral principles, officials remained loyal and served their country faithfully. Hierarchy existed in the family, such as among father and son. Son’s were dutiful and respectful. The close family bonds dictated that siblings respected and loved one another.

Fathers were benevolent, whilst sons obedient. Fathers placed hope in their sons and made sure they were raised properly. Should a son misbehave, the father disciplined him, as this was considered being responsible to both family and society. Pace of life in the 20th century is fast and quite demanding, often with both husband and wife having to spend long hours working away from home. In ancient China, a husband worked hard to support his family, and the wife endeavored to be the understanding wife and loving mother. A wife would make sure the household was warm and inviting for all. Regardless of whether the husband was near or far, he would always long to return home. Chinese have always believed in predestined relationship, or fate. And it is such a predestined relationship that the Chinese believe allows a man
and woman to be together, so a couple holds a deep appreciation for one another. In ancient China, people emphasized tolerance in relationships. Despite any differences, harmony is maintained through mutual respect, tolerance and consideration for the other. Marriage at that time was considered indestructible. Friends cherish relationships that are based on honesty and kindness. These moral principles allow people to behave properly. Adhering to the Three Cardinal Guides and self discipline allow society to function properly and be in harmony with nature. Neglecting its principles leads to disorder among king and officials, as well as in the family, with people being less able to practice self restraint.

Promoting Free Education Through many years of arduous begging, Wu Xun had accumulated a large sum of money. There was a learned man named Mr. Yang, who was considered trustworthy. Wu Xun wanted to deposit his money at Mr. Yang's place, so he requested to meet with Mr. Yang to discuss this. Due to Wu Xun's lowly status as a beggar, Mr. Yang refused to see him. Wu Xun knelt at Mr. Yang's main entrance everyday spinning threads. Often as he knelt down, he got covered in bird droppings, but he never complained. On some rainy days, tiles from Mr. Yang's roof dislodged, crashing on Wu Xun's head. None of this bothered Wu Xun, instead he sang: “Covered in droppings, it doesn't bother me, building a free school makes me happy.” “As tiles drop on my head, building a free school is still on my journey ahead.” Seeing the persistent Wu Xun kneeling daily at his door with his head battered and bleeding, Mr. Yang was greatly touched. He granted Wu Xun's request and helped Wu Xun to deposit his money. Mr. Yang provided financial assistance to Wu Xun's ambition to provide children with a free education, and gathered some people together to plan and manage the building of the free school. When everything seemed in place and work was ready to commence, Mr. Yang tried to convince Wu Xun to postpone his ambition and said; “There are some issues with you. The

main issue is that you are without children. Only after you get married and have children should you then consider building a free school.” Determined, Wu Xun firmly said, “I'm not out to get a wife, nor do I desire children. Building a free school is my selfless ambition.” In 1886, 49-year-old Wu Xun purchased 230 acres of land. He rented this land out and raised a large sum of money to establish a free school. In 1887, two wealthy landlords, in awe of Wu Xun's charitable ambition, donated their land for Wu Xun to develop schools on. Wu Xun purchased tiles and timber, personally escorting the delivery of these materials to the construction site. Waking up early and working together with the other workers, he helped to carry bricks, always to finish late at night. He involved himself in every aspect of the building process. In 1888, Wu Xun spent almost the remainder of his money establishing a free school outside the East Gate at Liu Lin Town, which was named: 'The Philanthropic School of Virtue'. It took him 30 years to achieve his great ambition, and he never gave up regardless of the difficulties he faced. On establishing the school, Wu Xun sought out learned scholars, begging on his knees before them, pleading them to fill the teaching positions at the free school. Wu Xun appointed Mr. Yang as school principal. Wu Xun then went out to seek students to attend the free school. He visited poverty-stricken families from door to door, helping them understand the importance of education, and urging them to

send their children to the free school. Many people didn't understand the importance of education and turned a deaf ear to Wu Xun's pleading. Facing these people Wu Xun sang: “A free school has been built, children of penniless families should attend; You may learn the Three Charac te r Cl as s ic , t h e h u n d r e d Chinese surnames; Maths and writing letters, you'll no longer need to be beggars.” Wu Xun's efforts paid off. In 1888, the Philanthropic School of Virtue enrolled more than 50 students, free of charge. The students were divided into two classes. To celebrate the opening of the Philanthropic School of Virtue, Wu Xun prepared a substantial banquet for the distinguished scholars, teachers and squires employed at the school. Wu Xun kowtowed and extended his thanks to the guests. He explained that he was a beggar and illiterate, so he refused to join the banquet. After the guests finished their meals, Wu Xun ate the leftovers and left in high spirits.
The Building of Two More Free Schools On accomplishing his aspiration, he still lived on by begging. He stayed in a ruined temple. The students got together and knelt down, trying to persuade him to stay in the school. He refused this request and said, “My life hasn't been difficult. You students just study hard and I'll be very happy.”

Wu Xun was most concerned with the students’ studies. He visited the school frequently, and expressed his appreciation toward dedicated teachers by kneeling before them and thanking them. For students who slackened off and didn't take their studies seriously he knelt down and sobbed, “If you don't earnestly study, you'll be too ashamed to face your father and brothers. Should you fail to study well, how are you to face your mother?” One morning all students were present in class, but the teacher was nowhere to be seen. Wu Xun sobbed upon finding the teacher still asleep in the teacher's dormitory. When the teacher woke up, Wu Xun sang, “The teacher sleeps whilst children misbehave; on my knees I beg, please teach them Sir.” Once, a teacher requested some time off to go back home and relax. This teacher exceeded his time off and failed to return to school. Wu Xun walked more than 45 kilometres to get to this teacher's place. Arriving late at night, Wu Xun didn't want to bother him and stayed outside till dawn. The teacher, moved by Wu Xun's sincerity, dared not to exceed his time off any longer and went straight back to school to continue teaching. Word of Wu Xun's sincerity spread. Students started to study earnestly, and teachers dared not slack off, treating the imparting of education with utmost respect. Zhang Yao, governor of Shandong Province at the time, heard of Wu Xun's great deeds. He sent an invitation requesting a meeting with Wu Xun. Dressed in shabby rags with bits of loose dangling threads, Wu
Xun arrived at the governor's place in Jinan. Whilst speaking to Governor Zhang, he kept tying together the bits of loose dangling threads on his rags. Upon seeing Wu Xun exhibit such behavior, Governor Zhang asked him if he suffered from any particular illness. Wu Xun replied, “I'm not crazy, nor am I ill. I only have what's known as 'free school syndrome'”. The governor admired Wu Xun’s selflessness. Therefore the free school was exempt from paying rates and taxes. Moreover the governor made a substantial financial donation to the school. Meanwhile, Emperor Guang Xu sent his imperial commissioners to present Wu Xun with a wooden plaque reading: “Virtuous is the Provision of Free Education”. The commissioners also presented Wu Xun with a yellow gown sent by the Emperor himself. Wu Xun however, was unwilling to kneel down in front of the imperial commissioners, nor was he willing to wear the yellow gown. He said, “Establishing a free school is extremely upright, so there's no need for awards. There's also no point to wear this yellow gown. The free school that has now been established is there to stay.” In 1890, a monk by the name of Liao Zheng, volunteered to help build a second free school with Wu Xun. Wu Xun managed to establish the second free school at Yang'er Manor which is located in today's Lin Qing, also in Shandong Province. In Wu Xun's life, he never married nor did he purchase any property for himself. He lived in poverty and never spent a penny on himself. His name became widely known in his

latter years. He was highly respected by both young and old everywhere. Wherever he went he was closely followed by people trying to invite him for a meal. When Wu Xun was aged 55, he started a collection of books and set up book clubs, providing people who couldn't afford to buy books with a free borrowing service. In order to show people his collection of books, he'd carry them all and put them on display at various festivals held at the local temple. Moreover, using a traditional copier, he reproduced many articles and books that were written in plain language for peasants, free of charge. In the same year, Yu De, minister of the Department of Education, carried out inspections in Shandong Province. Wu Xun requested the minister for a donation for his free schools. Yu De donated seven and a half kilograms of silver. In 1896, Wu Xun built a third free school. It still exists to this day and is now known as: Wu Xun Experimental Primary School.

Wu Xun's Name is Left to Posterity Soon after the third free school was founded, Wu Xun fell severely ill. He did not occupy a room, instead, he slept under the roof outside the school. On April 23, 1896, as Wu Xun lay outside a classroom, he quietly listened to students inside read out loud together. To hear these previously illiterate students read together brought a smile to Wu Xun's face. As he smiled, Wu Xun passed away having accomplished what he set out to do at the age of 59. According to his will, he was buried at the East Side of the Philanthropic School of Virtue in Liu Lin Town. When news of Wu Xun's death was made public, villagers along a road of 30 kilometres came out to participate in a memorial ceremony for Wu Xun. Roughly 10,000 people attended the funeral service, and huge crowds filled the main road. All the teachers and students of Wu Xun's three free schools could be heard mourning Wu Xun's death.
People present asked each other whilst sobbing, “Who said that Wu Xun didn't have any children?” Ten years later, the Qing dynasty required the Institute of National History to write a biography, repair the tomb and erect a monument for Wu Xun. Wu Xun's lifetime and his achievements earnt great respect. Many brilliant scholars wrote inscriptions for him. Meanwhile, the name 'Wu Xun' was given to many schools. In 1945, the Jinan Administration Department established Wu Xun School at Liu Lin Town. During the Republican Period, General Feng Yuxiang set up 15 Wu Xun primary schools from 1932 to 1935. Tang Yi County was renamed Wu Xun County, and Liu Lin Town was renamed Wu Xun Town to commemorate him.Wu Xun had practised altruism his whole life. Though he was a beggar, he achieved the magnificent feat of not only building one free school, but three free schools, and his reputation lives on. Wu Xun is referred to as a saint in Shandong Province.

Papaya’s Medicinal Properties According to Chinese Medicine By Hu Naiwen

C
hinese medicine has documented papaya's efficacy in treating aches, pains, muscle spasms and stiffness. One thing to note here is that the medicinal papaya used in Chinese medicine is not the papaya that people commonly eat as fruit. Li Shizhen (1518 - 1593), one of the greatest Chinese medical practitioners, wrote about the papaya in t h e C o mpe n d i u m o f Ma t e r i a Medica, the most famous medical book ever published in the history of Chinese medicine. He quoted Tao Hongjing’s words: ‘The papaya is best for treating cramps. When the cramp occurs, say “Mùguā” (papaya in Chinese), write down the two Chinese characters 木瓜,meaning papaya, and the problem is gone. The reason is yet to be understood.’ Tao Hongjing, as quoted above, was a Chinese doctor and cultivator
of the Dao, or 'the Way'. In ancient China, cultivators of the Dao often possessed super sensory abilities and had great insight into traditional Chinese medical research. Here's a simple prescription with papaya that can deal with nasty stomachaches effectively. According to an early Chinese medical book called Food Therapy, to treat lower abdominal pain, take 3 slices of papaya, 7 mulberry leaves, and 3 red dates. Add a litre of water and cook until half a litre is left. Drink the decoction and the pain will disappear in no time. Long ago, the Chinese discovered that papaya was effective in treating problems in sinews and muscles. The medicinal papaya tree grew all over China, but according to Su Song, a doctor of the Northern Song Dynasty, the papaya grown in Xuanzhou (today’s Anhui Province in east China) was of the highest quality. People's constant and prolonged
use of smart phones these days is a common cause for a stiff neck. Neither acupuncture nor medication can solve the problem completely. The following is a prescription from the Compendium of Materia Medica which utilises the papaya to treat a stiff neck. Try it out - this timeless prescription might work wonders! According to the Compendium, the stiffness and sinew spasm in the neck results from “wind” invasion of the liver and the kidney. To treat the condition, cut 2 papaya in half length-ways and scoop out the seeds, put 37 grams of myrrh and 5 grams of frankincense in both papaya. Use string to tie the papaya halves together. Place the papaya on a bed of rice and steam 3-4 times, then grind into a paste. For each dose, take 11 grams of the paste, add 100 ml of rehmannia juice and 400 ml of limeless wine, mix well, and heat until warm, the paste should have dissolved entirely. Serve warm.

Preparing Students for their Adult Lives Interview with MLC Principal, Diana Vernon Author: Daniel Cameron
E
stablished in 1882, MLC is a non-selective day and boarding school located in Melbourne's prestigious inner suburb Kew, and is well known for its extensive curriculum, outstanding facilities and caring community. With a mission to develop young women of conscience, compassion and responsibility with the ability to make positive choices in life, MLC offers an enriching education and has some notable alumnae to testify, including renowned Australian actress Cate Blanchett. In an exclusive interview with New Land Magazine, MLC Principal Diana Vernon tells us more about an MLC education. NEW LAND: How does MLC design its curriculum to suit the needs for young girls? Diana: We are proud to offer one of the broadest curricula of any independent school. Subject variety is a hallmark of an MLC education and is complemented by an exceptional and extensive cocurricular program with an array of sports, clubs and opportunities that accommodate every student’s interests and talents. NEW LAND: What sort of facilities are on campus at MLC? Diana: Our Kew campus combines historic buildings with stateof-the art, purpose-built facilities. Students from Early Learning right through to Year 12 study on the one campus which is spread over almost 11 hectares. Sporting facilities include a playing field, gymnasium, a swimming and diving pool, which are used for both academic classes and a range of co-curricular activities. Hospitality students enjoy a custom built industrial kitchen which they use during class time and when servicing the student-run restaurant, The Terrace. Music students enjoy the arts precinct which is purpose-built with an auditorium and several additional performance spaces.

75
NEW LAND: How does MLC adapt to multiculturalism and globalism? Diana: We have longstanding relationships with sister schools and other educational communities around the world, and our extensive language offering is complemented by a comprehensive program of trips, tours and exchanges. NEW LAND: Can you tell us more about the IB certificate that MLC offers? Diana: The International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma is a two year program that MLC offers as an alternative option to the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). It is recognised by Australian tertiary institutions and major universities world-wide and aims to develop inquisitive and knowledgeable lifelong learners. Each year, MLC IB students achieve exceptional results. In 2014, 36 IB students achieved a total of 96 Grade 7s, which is the highest possible grade in IB, across 27 different subjects. NEW LAND: What are the major challenges facing the education system nowadays, and how is MLC responding to them? Diana: The challenge for all schools is 'how best to prepare students for their adult lives and a world we cannot begin to envisage'. Technology is driving the pace of change incredibly fast. 25 years ago, MLC was the first school in the world to introduce a one to one program for staff and students. MLC continues to lead the education sector in its use of technology - in particular the way we use it to enhance students' learning. We are also focused on embedding 21st Century skills of collaboration and communication in our programs of study. In addition, we prepare students to adapt and use their skills flexibly. NEW LAND: Do you recall a teacher that left a very positive impression on you when you were a student? Diana: Two teachers in my life left a particular impression. Penny Bazire, who taught me in my junior school and went on to run the school. I have remained in contact with her and she has always been a fabulous role model and a great mentor. And my biology teacher at my senior school - Miss Launder. She was passionate about the subject and instilled in all her pupils the value and satisfaction of hard work and curiosity.

verlooking Melbourne’s shipping ports, this elegant house of strong simple materials has been built for longevity. With its refined and genuine interiors by the awarding winning Melbourne based design practice Fiona Lynch, the house has been turned into a sophisticated yet relaxing home with bespoke details throughout. "The project in Williamstown is a new residence and we were brought in after the architectural stage to design all the custom cabinetry, finishes, lighting, soft furnishing and furniture," said Fiona Lynch, Director of the design office. As many other projects designed and overseen by the practice before, Williamstown Residence is another testament to its artistic approach and an inventive use of space and materials. Functionality was on the top agenda as this is a home for a young family which needs to be timeless and allow
for its growing needs, yet with the client's eye for design, it also needs to be unique and sophisticated. The bold use of natural material complemented with tailored details proved to be a perfect response to these expectations from the client. As a final touch, furniture and art have been curated and chosen for their iconic form, texture or color to commensurate with the refined and elegant interior. "The detailing in all the cabinetry and inventive use of stone are all very special features and then iconic designer furniture and light fittings used to add a layer of ‘wow’," Fiona said proudly. According to Fiona, "Every element of this house was designed from scratch, which is great for a designer but also means lots of decisions had to be made in a short time frame." As an innovative designer who relishes challenges, she took this as a great opportunity to grow. The beautiful result and happy client speaks for everything.

T
oday, I bring you to another famous Victoria Wine Region, The Pyrenees of Australia. The Pyrenees is a wine region centered on the Pyrenees ranges located in Victoria, Australia, near the towns of Avoca and Moonambel. Vines were first planted in the region in 1848. Several wine growers produced and sold wine in the region in the late 1800s and early part of the twentieth century. The 1960s saw the re-establishment of vineyards in the area with the French Cognac producer Rémy Martin planting grapes in the mid 1960s. Since the 1970s the region has been a significant producer of full-bodied red wines based on Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties. The main eight wineries of the region in the 1970s and 1980s included: Chateau Rémy (since renamed Blue Pyrenees Estate), Dalwhinnie Vineyard, Mount Avoca Vineyard, Mountain Creek, Summerfield Vineyards, Redbank Winery, Taltarni Vineyards and Warrenmang Vineyard.

Warrenmang Vineyard, Moonambel First planted in 1974, with a 78 bed hotel and restaurant opened in 1988, Warrenmang is a major destination for winelovers in the Pyrenees. Warrenmang Vineyard has had a five star rating for many years and is located near Moonambel in the Pyrenees Region, one of Victoria and Australia’s premier wine growing districts. The Warrenmang Vineyard has a combination of red clay/loam soils and gentle slopes. The vineyard site is planted well above the frost-risk zone. Wine grapes grown under these conditions generally provide intense fruit flavours together with some finesse and elegance, avoiding the hotter, high alcohol characters sometimes seen in wines from a warmer region.

Exhibiting ripe blackberry and spice flavours, together with chocolate and liquorices overtones and soft tannins, a trademark of Pyrenees. • 5 Gold Stars Australian Wine Vintages Gold Book."Ranks in the top wines of the world" - Robert Geddes. 94/100 James Halliday.
2009 Warrenmang Estate Shiraz Deep crimson red. The nose suggested liquorice, ripe blackberry and vanilla with a hint of mint. Balanced flavours of blackberry, liquorice and spearmint with a chalky tannins finish. • Cellaring optional 10+++ yrs. • 5 Stars Winestate Magazine 2010 top of category. • 94/100 James Halliday • Shortlisted for Winestate’s Wine of the Year
2009 BLACK PUMA Shiraz Deep bright red. The wine displays intense blackberry and dark cherry fruit, anise with a hint of spice. On the palate, dark berry fruit, subtle pepper and cinnamon notes combines with a touch of gamey, slight raisin with dusty olive. Finish with slight bitter grippy tannin and a touch of mocha. Huge wine. Saturated blackberry, coffee beans and blackcurrant with fresh, tangy, boysenberry-like flavours too. No one's going to be left wondering with this. Its tannin structure is dry and substantial too and if it wasn't for the bitter kick on the finish, we'd likely have been raving. As things stand we still reckon it's an excellent wine - it will be really interesting to taste it once it's mellowed. • 50% SOLD PRIOR TO RELEASE • 95/100 James Halliday
