Inspiring & Captivating MELODIES THAT CAPTURE THE SPIRIT OF ANCIENT CHINA

M

usic has had mystical powers throughout Chinese history. The Yellow Emperor used it to defeat his greatest enemy. Confucius claimed it could help govern a country. The ancient Chinese believed it even had the power to heal. Music is such a big part of every Shen Yun performance—from the live orchestra that accompanies each dance to the vocal and instrumental solos on stage. Shen Yun’s orchestra is incredibly unique, harmoniously blending the grandeur of a Western orchestra with the distinct beauty of ancient Chinese instruments. The result is a gorgeous and vivid sound with great emotional range—perfect for bringing to life the soul of an ancient civilization.

Discover a Different China

Y

ou cannot see the authentic Chinese culture Shen Yun presents anywhere else. Not even in China, where the ruling Communist Party sees traditional culture as a threat to its power. It tried obliterating this heritage, and almost succeeded. But 10 years ago, a group of Chinese artists came together in New York. They created Shen Yun and have brought this culture back from the brink of extinction. Although Shen Yun still cannot perform in China, it is now celebrating this ancient culture around the world. That’s why many people even travel from China especially to see Shen Yun. Alongside ancient legends, Shen Yun presents the moving story of people who practice Falun Dafa in China today. They face terrible persecution, and yet continue to follow the traditional principles of truth, compassion, and tolerance. These dances have become audience favorites because of the feelings of courage and hope that they inspire.

Art That Nourishes the Soul UPLIFTING ENERGY— EXPERIENCE SHEN YUN’S TRUE DIFFERENCE

A

rt can do more than make us smile. It is a universal language that knows no cultural bounds. It can inspire and uplift us. In ancient China, artists believed that to create true art, they must not only master their craft, but also cultivate goodness and inner purity. Today, Shen Yun’s artists carry on this noble tradition. Shen Yun takes timeless virtues—ideals like loyalty, humility, compassion—and presents what is beautiful and good in a powerful theatrical experience. You can see this positive energy in the genuine joy with which these artists perform, and feel it long after the curtain falls.

and I'm glad to share a part of Chinese culture with them. Q: How does the music of Shen Yun compare with Chinese music that people are already familiar with? Huang: Traditional Chinese music has a strong presence in Taiwan. That being said, large-scale concerts are limited to Chinese instrument orchestras. Our music combines traditional Chinese music with the large scale Western orchestration that most would associate with classical music like Brahms or Beethoven. It’s not what people expect, and there are endless layers to explore and discover. Chiu: I am always captivated by the subtleties that result from blending these two musical traditions. You have classical composition techniques that use strong, structured harmonic progressions, but the flavors and styles are unmistakably Chinese. People of East Asian backgrounds will instantly recognize some of our music’s basic traits, and they’ll also be spellbound by the new ideas. My personal favorites are the unique arrangements; this year we even have a pairing of pipa with trumpet! Q: How else would you characterize Shen Yun’s music? Lee: Growing up in Taiwan, my initial impression of Chinese music came from ceremonial music at the temple near my house. And I don’t mean church hymns or peaceful meditation music. I mean drums and cymbals and loud, blaring instruments. Here with Shen Yun, I learned that it’s possible to take the beautiful parts of one culture and magnify them using techniques borrowed from another culture to create a truly synergistic effect. Tsai: Shen Yun combines the sounds of the erhu, pipa, or Chinese percussion instruments with Western symphonic coloring, and in so doing creates something totally original. It becomes something that appeals to people everywhere. It’s different from pure Chinese music, and different from pure Western styles, too.

Q: Last question—what do you hope the audience will take away from the concert? Huang: I hope they will leave with deeper appreciation of traditional Chinese culture. Lee: I’d like to spark people’s imagination. If we can evoke even just two minutes of true mental peace, or perhaps a feeling of soaring of the heavens, then we’ve done our job! v

SHEN YUN & TRADITIONAL CHINESE CULTURE 神韻與中國傳統文化 By Shen Yun 文 | 神韻

An Introduction to Traditional Chinese Culture

S

ince ancient times, China has been known as the “Celestial Empire.” This refers not only to China’s strength and position as East Asia’s Middle Kingdom, it also captures a more profound meaning, describing a land where the divine and mortal once coexisted. It refers to the belief that the divine, through various dynasties, transmitted a rich and abundant culture to the Chinese people. Chinese culture is thus known as “divinely inspired,”

and is the only culture in the world to have a continuous recorded history of 5,000 years. It has left behind countless literary classics, historical documents, cultural relics, and national records reflecting its immense scope.

Q: That is quite a grand gesture on his behalf coming from an Asian culture, but in a sense trying to preserve all of the world’s traditional or classical cultures. Terracin: Yes, he’s a Shinto priest and that’s part of his philosophy, he gives away virtually everything that he earns and he’s really an exceptional human being. I was very fortunate to be able to meet him. Q: You have taken some criticism in the past from some over the way you’ve approached the programming. It’s a tough job you’ve got here, where it could be said that you are in a position to preserve classical Western culture. Terracin: It’s very easy to program in a way that will appeal to a very small audience and when you do that people will think your're being brave and daring, well you’re not. If you do that what happens is what’s happening to opera companies all over the world, they close. It’s our responsibility and I believe it’s the responsibility of every organisation that receives money from the public purse to play to as many people as possible, and in our society that meant that this company had to change and it had to change significantly. It wasn’t acceptable any more for us to just play to a European audience. Australia has changed dramatically and in a really wonderful way. The major cities are far more predominately Asian and we need to put forward an artistic product that’s

interesting to those people. The form has always been a popular form, when Verdi and Puccini were writing operas there was no government support. They worked because the operas were successful. Its only in recent times we’ve created this notion that it’s an elite form, it’s not. You need elite artists to sing and play it because it’s incredibly difficult, but the music is incredibly accessible and the fact now that we sell 650,000 tickets a year, as I said more than any other opera company in the world, means that we must be doing something right. Q: You have an Italian heritage, and spent some time in Italy. What do you see as the differences between the cultural lives of people there compared to Australia? Terracin: In Italy people grow up listening to opera. Even in the tiny villages they’ll take a big bus and go to the Arena in Verona every year, so it’s a kind of holiday to go and see operas. Opera now is becoming much more popular here, it hasn’t been in the DNA of the very different ethnic groups that make up Australia and so often people have never heard a note until they’re adults. This year we did this production of Turandot on the harbour that Chen Shi-Zheng directed, a Chinese director which was fantastic, with Mandarin surtitles. We had a lot of people from China coming out to see it and also Chinese people that have grown up in Australia wanting to see it. It was a huge success for us. We will have surtitles on every opera we do in Mandarin, on the harbour every year now and we’ll continue with that. We’re getting more tourists from China every year now, it’s been terrific. Q: You’ve been quite open about your battle with depression. Part of the Chinese character for medicine is the character for music. Would you say music has been a powerful therapeutic device for you? Terracin: That’s a really interesting question. Yes it has

been, there’s no doubt about it. When you sing you release really positive endorphins and so you feel better when you sing and as a singer, when you’re singing well, that positivity is really magnified, so it’s not just the act of singing that you think is really working well. Playing music is a fantastic antidote for depression and the other thing I found is that if I’m really busy, particularly intellectually busy, it helps me enormously. If I’m busy and if I’m making music, well, it’s a fantastic medicine… plants even grow better with classical music. I’ve been incredibly lucky throughout my whole life, I mean I don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t of been a musician and a singer. Opera Australia has launched its 2017 season. F

rom its humble beginnings in a small terrace house at the top of Mount Street North Sydney in 1885, Abbotsleigh Girls School has developed into an elite school for girls with a reputation for educational excellence, occupying two state of the art campuses on Sydney’s Upper North Shore and

ranking as the top independent school in NSW for Higher

School Certificate, 2015. Despite its extensive grounds and facilities - the school boasts an

aquatic centre, gymnasium, world class tennis courts, concert hall, early learning centre, boarding houses, drama studio, environmental and research centres and a chapel complete with a stunning baroque organ - it is the principles at the core of Abbotsleigh’s educational ethos that make such facilities truly valuable. This ethos can be traced back to the school’s first headmistress, Marian Clarke, who founded Abbotsleigh Girls School based upon her own advanced ideas on education: a balance between physical and mental education, a wide ranging curriculum, strict discipline and the encouragement of charitable works. For current headmistress Judith Poole who took on the role 12 years ago, teaching was a profession she had not initially intended to pursue. In fact her passion for teaching emerged whilst volunteering for the Peace Corps in Africa. She recalls being stationed on the edge of the Kalahari Desert in a small village in Botswana consisting of mud huts, no running water and only a generator for electricity. “I was a physics and maths undergraduate major. We were in a

village called Serowe where they said, 'With your background you might be able to teach mathematics, would you like to do that?’ I had never really thought about teaching' however that’s where I fell in love with it. Generally you do a two year placement but we stayed for six. It was transformational on every level.” When Abbotsleigh Girls School moved to Wahroonga in 1898, it became the first girls school in Australia to have a sports field. The sporting life of the school draws on a long tradition of physical exercise, team spirit and fair play. A sportswoman herself, Judith fully appreciates the value of the girls being actively engaged in physical activity. She coaches a school softball team as well as playing softball in a local competition. Her philosophy on being actively engaged also extends to the service learning programs that are an equally important part of Abbotsleigh’s curriculum. “We have about 15 of these various programs in year 10 that the girls themselves generate and run. Experiential and enquiry based learning are essential aspects of our pedagogy, so that students learn by doing” Judith describes the service learning programs as having a far deeper educational impact on the girls than just community service. She enthusiastically told the story of a group of year 10 students who arranged to teach young refugee girls from a school in western Sydney to swim. In return the young Muslim girls taught their Abbotsleigh counterparts the art of belly dance. “That’s where I would say real learning takes place. There are a whole lot of skills that are being learnt that go beyond just community service. Really, schools are about building social capital.” “Where you get the impact is when you actually have students identify social issues in the community that they feel they might have a place to help solve or make better. Then we try to provide an opportunity for them to partner or work with an element of the community.” “So I guess yes, just like doing volunteer work in Africa, I feel like I took away far more from my experience there than I ever gave.” “Here we try to help the individual find themselves in a community, national or global context.” v

T

here is an old Chinese saying “It takes ten years to grow trees but a hundred years to rear talents”, which highlights the importance of a long term view and forwarding thinking strategy in education. Knox Grammar

School in Sydney has no doubt created an exemplary model with its time honoured Christian heritage of helping each boy to pursue a holistic development, leaving school as a young man with integrity, wisdom, compassion and faith, as well as a sure knowledge of who they are and how they should live. As one of Australia's leading independent all boys' schools with nearly 3,000 students from Kindergarten to year 12, Knox Grammar exudes excellence, not only in outstanding academic results but also in sport, music and the arts.

By showing how those traditional values are applied to people's life in modern day context, it also reveals the power of faith in offering you purpose, energy and sense of wellbeing.

The last one hundred years has witnessed its continuous growth into a close-knit while inclusive

excellence is accelerated with the help of dedicated staff and state-of-the-art facilities and resources. Mr. John Weeks is the seventh headmaster of Knox Grammar School. His passion is to help young boys over the bumps of life, encouraging them to explore the purpose of living, and instilling in them an appreciation of traditional values on the pathway to meaningful lives. In a recent interview with New Land, Mr. John Weeks shared the uniqueness of the school, including its Christian heritage, its strong commitment to the students' future as well as its response to modern day challenges in education.

from another background. NL: How have schools changed since when you were growing up? Mr. John Weeks: The biggest change is the introduction of communication technology into learning and teaching experience, which has changed the role of teachers and the implication of education. When I studied at school in the 1960s, teachers were the only people who had the knowledge and were the main source of information. Nowadays, with students having access to information and being able to research via different sources on their own, the role of teachers has changed to more of the guide and director who points students to particular topics and to particular issues. Rather than telling students to read the information as absolutely correct, they should direct students to think about and question the information by taking all the information they have discovered

DAY 1: DERBY DAY

To be outstanding at Australia‘s most famous outdoor fashion fest, Melbourne Cup Carnival, we marked down a few special dates for you to dress up.

Adhering to tradition, monochrome is the quintessential look for Derby Day. New season geometric shapes and stripes will debut in the ultimate of extravagance. Stand out from the crowd in white on white, modernising with different textures. Lace is ladylike and sophisticated and brings volume and detail. Beautiful layering with a fresh white cape or spring scarf in a gorgeous georgette or silk will make a simple outfit more interesting. Perfectly tailored culottes with an open mule are a contemporary styling choice this spring.

Season after season one of a kind structural millinery will ensure you are making the boldest statement of the race calendar.

Bold cobalt and fuschia are the colour heavyweights this season, with their pretty pastel counter parts baby blue and pink dominating the softer hue scene. Bold and beautiful prints and playful pattern will feature heavily on the spring track, bringing a fresh breeze of confident femininity.

High Tea Rug Petrina: My earliest childhood memories included seeing my mum’s beautiful creations as a talented tailoress, and my tiny fingers sewing jewel-like buttons onto discarded scraps of fabric with coloured thread as she worked. I also have some of her first stitched pieces from when she was a girl. It sparked a love of all things stitched including a vintage cross-stitched table cloth that I picked up from a tiny treasure trove many years ago. Its many tea stains are testament to my love of sharing stories with friends and family over a beautifully set table and HIGH TEA.

“We really try to promote freshness in coffee, it’s really super important in specialty coffee, which is usually handpicked, selected and processed using similar methods to wine to pull out the best flavours of the fruit.” “A lot of Australian companies are working directly with farmers now or buying farms themselves so they can monitor freshness and quality. It also allows them to improve the quality of life for the farmers in these developing countries.” “The result is that the company gets better quality coffee at a better price and the farmer also gets a better price and better conditions.” Jonathon predicts that in the future Australians will have to start paying more for better quality coffee. “As people start to appreciate the single origin coffees and the boutique coffees we will probably see different price ranges for different quality coffees, just like wine, with improved quality comes increased cost of production.” ASCA is governed and run completely by volunteers. All work full time in the specialty coffee industry and contribute their free, unpaid time to run it. For more information visit www.aasca.com v
