The erhu has a history of over 4,000 years. Although it has only two strings, it can express a wide range of emotions and is said to most resemble the human voice.

It tried obliterating this heritage, and almost succeeded. But 10 years ago, a group of Chinese artists came together in New York. They created Shen Yun and have brought this culture back from the brink of extinction. Although Shen Yun still cannot perform in China, it is now celebrating this ancient culture around the world. That’s why many people even travel from China especially to see Shen Yun. Alongside ancient legends, Shen Yun presents the moving story of people who practice Falun Dafa in China today. They face terrible persecution, and yet continue to follow the traditional principles of truth, compassion, and tolerance. Ancient China did not have the concept of ‘country.’ While hegemons frequently battled over territory, national borders were rarely permanently defined. Instead, the lords believed in a basic principle: All lands were under the watch of Heaven, and belonged to no earthly king. But dynasties united China as effectively as a country. The emperor, known as the Son of Heaven, granted titles to rulers of surrounding territories. By accepting the titles, they became officials of the established dynasty, and were expected to pay tribute to the emperor. Since the Qin, around 200 B.C., powerful dynasties unified “all under Heaven” and deeply influenced Chinese and world history. And because each dynasty was unique, it left behind a rich array of cultures for posterity to admire.

The Song Dynasty The Song dynasty lasted over 300 years (960–1279). Like its Tang dynasty predecessor, the Song dynasty is viewed as a golden era of Chinese civilization, a period

每日布衣蔬食，但邵雍從不叫苦，他一方面躬耕打柴，以養父母，一方面發奮讀書，堅志苦學，立志成才。隨著年齡的增長，他漸漸感到僅靠讀書還不能全面長進，於是便走出家門，遊歷了黃河、汾水、淮河、漢水等地，考察了齊、魯、宋、鄭之廢墟，增長了見識，開闊了眼界。歸來之後，讀書更加用功。

宋朝 – 歷史上經濟最發達的朝代

傳說，邵雍家裡有兩個陶枕，就是用泥土燒制的藍色

The Song is known as the most economically prosperous dynasty in Chinese history. During its reign, China was transformed from an agrarian to a commercial economy and its population increased dramatically. success. A jump in agricultural production ensued—even the later Ming and Qing dynasties failed to surpass the Song’s yield. Technology developed rapidly as well. Three of the “Four Great Inventions” of ancient China originated in the Song dynasty: the magnetic compass, printing, and gunpowder. Firearms began to be widely used during military combat and ship building dramatically improved. To protect its growing foreign trade, the Song dynasty established China’s first permanent navy. Printing, papermaking, silk production, and porcelain crafts all thrived. In the 12th century, the Song became the first government in the world to print its own paper currency. Song rulers were comparatively flexible in their style of governance. The scholar-official class enjoyed an unprecedented rise in social status and carried much of the responsibility for local administration. The prosperous economy, freedom of expression, and the invention of printing provided scholars with an environment to freely contemplate, debate, and propagate their thought.

Wisdom of Shao Yong Living during the Song Dynasty, Shao Yong (1011 A.D. - 1077 A.D.) was one of the most learned scholars in Chinese history. He was a philosopher, cosmologist, poet, and historian. He was well respected for his virtues and indepth knowledge of iconography and numerology.

放爆竹，開大門，設齋果茶酒於庭，拜天、地、祖先，稱「新

月之朝，日之朝，故曰：『三朝』，亦曰：『三

年開門大吉」；然後晚輩向長輩作揖拜年，長輩賞給幼小

始』。」意思是說：正月一日是一年的開端，一

I think that one of the reasons is that some issues simply get left behind.” Weh recalls a 12 year old boy named Lin that he met when he first started OIC who really changed the way he saw the situation. ”Lin could not speak clearly and it was assumed he would never go to school. When someone has a speech difficulty they are often assumed to be of low intelligence, when actually that part of the brain isn’t really affected. They are usually of normal, or better than average intelligence. I could tell that there was something behind him that wasn’t able to come out. We worked with Lin’s community worker Chea Phearom, giving her basic speech therapy training. After a couple of months his speech was able to improve, and Lin was able to go to school for the first time at the age of 12. Two months later I went back to visit him and I found that not only was he going to school but he was coming second in his class. This story shows us that he was able to leap frog all these kids who have been in the system, come in half way through and still perform at the top of his class. That was a big turning point for me because it made me think that I couldn’t walk away from the situation. Especially given the numbers, we’re talking about 600,000 people here without support.”

Weh is now handing over the management of the OIC to a local lady named Pisey Soeun. “She was brought up in this country and she understands Cambodia better than I do,” Weh acknowledges. “She’s able to operate here at a level that I can’t. I think our role as Australians or as foreigners in these countries is to support people like that, to give them the tools and resources to do the job, to solve their country’s own problems. We don’t want to set up something that perpetuates its own or the government’s dependency on foreigners to do the work for them. Rather than setting up an NGO, which is difficult to dissolve, because NGO‘S tend to perpetuate their own work, we said,

Gutasaga Archaeological records point to Gotland rising and falling into the sea numerous times throughout history, and it is believed that it rose out of the sea for the final time around 9000BC. These records correspond with a thirteenth century manuscript housed in the Royal Library in Stockholm which contains the Gutasaga, or The History of The Gotlanders. The saga describes how Gotland at that time was bewitched so that it sank below the sea by day and only resurfaced at night. The first man to discover Gotland was named Tjelvar and he broke this spell by bringing fire to the island, so that it never sank again. Tjelvar’s descendants populated the island and multiplied to the point that the land could no longer support them. The people drew lots and every third person had to leave.
