Eden Zhu grew up in China surrounded by traditional culture — but only after coming to the United States did she grasp the deeper meanings hidden within it.

n 2014, at an international dance competition in New York City, hundreds of pairs of eyes were fixed eagerly on the figure of Eden Zhu, standing alone on the stage under a spotlight. She had a choice: how to play Chang’e? Chang’e is a goddess, and the story of her and her husband, Hou Yi, is about as well known in China as Romeo and Juliet in the West. Hou Yi, though not a god, had great abilities. He saved the world by shooting down with his bow and arrow nine suns that were burning the lands, winning him widespread respect and adoration. In the fable, Chang’e drinks an elixir of immortality and flies to the moon (a metaphor for Heaven), leaving her husband on earth. But interpretations differ on just why Chang’e drank the potion. In China, Zhu was taught that Chang’e drank it to prevent one of Hou Yi’s disciples from stealing it. After Zhu left China, her new teachers gave her another explanation for why Hou Yi was prevented from ascending to Heaven with his wife: his pride. This, Zhu says, was “a more interesting interpretation.” Hou Yi’s arrogance meant he had no place in Heaven — the gods reward character,

於中國大陸的朱穎姝，14歲時隻身一人來 到大洋彼岸的紐約，追尋自己的舞蹈夢。 她順利考入了「飛天藝術學院」，開始了專業的中 國古典舞學習生涯。「來到這裏之後，我心裏很平 靜，沒有覺得想家。唯一就是語言不通吧！不過， 學校裏也有同學會講中文，所以感覺沒幾天就適 應了。」說話間，朱穎姝甜甜地笑了起來，臉上寫 滿了青春的朝氣和希望。 回想當初義無反顧的「留洋壯舉」，朱穎姝說 要謝謝家人的支持，尤其是外婆的鼓勵。「我差不 多從五歲開始學習鋼琴和舞蹈，而且一開始學的 就是中國古典舞和民族舞。」那她如何想到來國外 繼續深造中國古典舞呢？「我覺得很多傳統的東 西，在中國大陸反倒遺失了。比如歷史吧！我記得 在中國學歷史時，課本裏都特別黑暗，好像中國古 人很悲慘，完全感受不到那種久遠文化的燦爛。學 習中國古典舞時，也只是學個表面的動作，裏面深 層的內涵完全不知道。後來我看了『神韻藝術團』 演出光碟，儘管只是在電視上，但裏面的舞蹈深深 地吸引、打動了我，感覺和我之前學的不一樣。」 可惜美不勝收的神韻演出，在如今的中國大 陸卻無法上演。這讓朱穎姝感到非常遺憾，隨即 堅定了前往美國學習中國古典舞的決心。初到「飛 天」的朱穎姝，便立刻感受到，中國大陸缺乏正統 的歷史文化教育，這甚至為她學習中國古典舞帶 來了很大的困擾。「中國古典舞最講求的是韻味， 這種獨特的味道需要對中國傳統文化有很深入的

not achievement. So Chang’e returned alone. The two different versions might have remained in the realm of Zhu’s philosophical musings, except for the fact that she needed to know how she ought to dance: like a wife jealously guarding the magical potion of her husband, or like a divine being about to return to Heaven, lamenting the weaknesses that keep men chained to their mortal coils. “At first, I didn’t understand her mindset,” says Zhu in an interview with Taste of Life, reliving her perplexity. “After I found out the true meaning of the story, in that performance I could very clearly express it through my movements.” In her dance, Zhu portrayed the ache of Chang’e returning alone.

It is the only dance company in the world that has made its mission the revival of traditional Chinese culture, which embodies divine grace in the human world. Though she grew up in a household steeped in the arts — she was taught piano from age 5, and began her training in dance soon after — Zhu says that it was only after moving from China to the United States that she grasped the deeper meaning of the culture that had surrounded her since youth. In New York, among like-minded peers, she discovered that her culture’s inner secrets were about moral elevation, living a life of virtue — not the showiness that is often presented today. When Zhu trains and performs, she connects with the profundity of the old folk tales that are passed down.

理解。本來我生長在中國，應該比國外的人有優 勢，可事實上，我卻覺得比同學們差了很多，要很 努力地去趕上大家的進度。」朱穎姝為我們舉了個 例子來說明文化內涵究竟是如何影響到舞蹈的。 「女演員跳的中國古典舞多是表現古代女子 的生活和形貌，從漢代到唐代，再到滿清。可中國 古代女子究竟是甚麼樣子呢？我們今天只能從一 些古代詩歌、繪畫中去瞭解。比如說，《論語》裏 有子夏問孔子的一句話，說的是《詩經》中描寫 古代女子之美的『巧笑倩兮，美目盼兮，素以為絢 兮。』意思是美麗的容貌是以潔白素淨的面龐為 基礎的。這裏的『素』並不只是說皮膚白，更包括 了內心的純潔、乾淨。我們在舞蹈時要表現古代女 子的美，就要把這種純樸、純真的內心表達出來。 」朱穎姝說，這些古文，尤其是其中深層的內涵， 在中國她從未學習過。反倒是來到美國「飛天」之 後，才開始從學校的中文課和歷史課學到，而這裏 課堂上對許多古文和歷史故事的解釋和中國大陸 也很不一樣。 「在近四年的學習之後，我現在覺得中國古 人的生活不是那麼黑暗了。相反的，他們留下了那 麼多美好的東西。像是高尚的品德，言行舉止的 端正有禮。有時，我們可以從一篇文章裏讀到許 多古人生活的風貌。像《蘭亭序》，它是一幅很有 名的書法作品，同時又是一篇很精彩文章。我們 可以從中讀到作者王羲之那天和朋友們歡聚時的 場景，還有他當時的心境和對世事的感慨。從書 法到文章到作者的內心融合在一起，當時的情境 栩栩如生地呈現在我們面前，這對跳舞來說尤其 有幫助。」朱穎姝停頓了一下，思索片刻，又為我們 講起了她在2014年「全世界中國古典舞大賽」中 演繹過的《嫦娥奔月》這支舞蹈。 《嫦娥奔月》在中國是婦孺皆知的神話傳說， 朱穎姝在對其做了一番研究之後，從中解讀出了許 多令人耳目一新的深層含義。「之前我對《嫦娥奔
月》的故事還不是很瞭解。只是大概知道后羿射日 後得到了仙藥，他的弟子蓬蒙有一天趁后羿不在 想偷吃仙藥，嫦娥為了不讓他得逞就自己把仙藥吃 了。後來我查到了一個更有趣的說法，說后羿拯救 了百姓，大家都崇拜他，不知不覺后羿就生出了驕 傲心理。天帝本想讓后羿和嫦娥一起回天，但看 到后羿變得自大了，就只讓嫦娥一個人回天了。」 瞭解了故事更多背景，朱穎姝跳舞時感覺思 路更清晰。「有一段動作是嫦娥拿著仙藥很糾結， 不知道是要吃還是不吃？我開始不太明白她為甚 麼會這樣，在知道故事的真意之後，那一段表演就 能很清楚地通過動作表達出來了。中國古典舞講 究『始於心，發於腰』，演員必須先心裏明白自己 要表達的是甚麼，然後，通過位於身體核心和中樞 的腰部來發力，把思想傳遞出去。」 學習了這麼多中國歷史和神話傳說，朱穎姝 最深的感受是中國古人對品德的看重。「我們的古 文老師經常說人要幹成一件大事要有天命、德行 和才能這三個因素。首先要有天命，就是上天的 安排；然後這個人必須要有高尚的品德，上天才會 授命於他；最後才是相應的才能。」令朱穎姝感到 可惜的是，這些中國傳統文化中最寶貴的精神財 富，在現在的中國卻是最被忽視的。「可能課本上 還是會講仁、義、禮、智、信，但人們並不是發自內 心地認可這些傳統文化價值。儘管我沒有親身經 歷過，但我知道中國經歷了像文革這樣一次次對 歷史文化的破壞，還有近代無神論思想的侵蝕。 中國古人信神、敬天的做法，現在都被當成封建迷 信。其實這些傳統、正統的思想才能讓人獲得內 心的平靜和幸福！」 朱 穎 姝又以自己表 演的舞蹈為例，來為我 們講述高尚的品德和操守對人們現實生活的影 響。2014年，她隨「神韻藝術團」參加全球巡演， 在舞蹈節目《逼上梁山》中，扮演梁山好漢林沖的 夫人。這個取材自中國四大古典名著《水滸傳》的

From the heart Classical Chinese dance, Zhu explains, has the phrase: “Start from the heart, bring out from the core.” It means that once a performer knows what she wants to express, she begins from the core of her body and transforms her thoughts into dance movements. This is why Zhu needed clarity on just what drove Chang’e. Zhu’s journey into the heart of her culture has brought her to the realization that her thoughts should be built on a foundation of goodness. “Our classical Chinese teacher teaches us that if one wants to do great things, three conditions are needed: the mandate of heaven, virtuous conduct, and talent.” The sense that her destiny is arranged,

and that doing her job well means acting with virtue wherever she goes, now guides her life. She says this spiritual reservoir has been neglected in her homeland. “‘Benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and trust,’” classical Confucian virtues, widely-known in China, “may still be written in the textbooks, but modern Chinese people don’t really recognize the values of traditional culture.” Her new understanding of the legend of Chang’e led Zhu to rethink everything she thought she knew about Chinese culture. The modern Chinese education system regards China’s traditions, such as belief in the existence of gods and heaven, as “feudal superstition,” she says. And while ancient China is often portrayed as bleak, hopeless, and an oppressive and backward society just waiting for revolution, Zhu begs to differ, having discovered a colorful and diverse society in the pages of literature. “Contrary to what I was taught in school, the ancients passed to us so much wonderful heritage,” she said, referring in part to artists such as Wang Xizhi, with his calligraphic poems. It was said that he and 42 of his learned peers would compose poetry while engaging in a race-against-the-clock drinking contest. His “Preface to the Poems Collected from the Orchid Pavilion,” remains one of China’s most revered pieces of writing and is copied by aspiring calligraphers to this day. It is this celebration of cultural legacy that Shen Yun’s dancers and expressive East-meetsWest-style orchestra bring to life with grace, humanity, and humor, Zhu feels. She is honoured, she said, to be among talented and dedicated colleagues. “When we’re onstage dancing in locations around the world, I feel a very righteous, very pure energy that is incomparably strong. I want to pass on this power to everyone.”

Among them is Shen Yun soprano Haolan Geng. No longer just a rising star, she now annually captivates audiences around the world. We sat down with her on a crisp morning in Shen Yun’s performing

arts center amidst the hills of New York’s Orange County, as she prepares for a fourth appearance at Carnegie Hall. Q: People so often comment about your voice, describing it as “powerful” and “emotive.” How did you get it? HG: I was born with this voice. In Chinese, we call a special gift “tian fen,” meaning, something the heavens give you. Q: How did you begin your path as a vocalist? HG: I’ve loved to sing ever since I was very young. When I heard singing on the radio, I knew I wanted to learn as well. My mom used to take me to participate in many different choirs—from
city to province-level. Later, I chose to go to an arts high school so I could train professionally, and then for college I attended a music conservatory and went from there. A major milestone for me was winning the 2009 New Tang Dynasty International Vocal Competition in New York, which led to my joining Shen Yun as a soloist.
To reach a higher realm as an artist, I think morality plays a vital role. It’s about leading a life of integrity. If you go about pretentiously offstage, you won’t be able to express any sincerity on stage. When the sounds and feelings you let out are pure, your song will be able to truly touch your listener.
Q: What do you think makes a great soprano? HG: You need a correct singing method, good insight, and the power to affect the audience. More importantly, you need a heart that loves music. Use your heart to sing, and don’t be superficial. On stage, when I’m feeling the meaning of my song and getting into its mood, emotions just pour out from inside me. I don’t plan any movements or expressions for this line or that line. Everything comes out naturally.
Q: What makes Shen Yun vocalists unique? HG: We use the most traditional singing methods— these are the same as those used in the past in classic Italian opera. It’s different from the bel canto used today, which has diverged from its earliest form. Shen Yun sopranos train in this classic method, meaning we vocalize and articulate from a different vocal position. Of course, it’s also harder to master because our lyrics are in Chinese.

Q: What goes through your mind as you sing? HG: When I look at the lyrics for the first time, I don’t set myself to memorizing the words. I begin by getting a gist of what the song is trying to say. By the time I sing the lines through a few times, I can start to comprehend it on a deeper level. Then, I keep rehearsing to deliver its message the best I can. When I’m practicing, if my heart’s not calm, I can’t sing well no matter what. If I’m frustrated, I feel like my voice sounds really ugly. Unless I compose myself, I can’t make any progress. For performances, I try to relax before going on. I let go of my worries. Put away my notions. Remind myself what I’m singing for, my purpose. And I clear my thoughts of everything else. Then when I get up there, I don’t think about much. Q: Do you have any special memories from past performances with Shen Yun? HG: There are so many! Sometimes, if the theater is bright enough, I can see audiences wiping away tears when I’m on stage. I’ve witnessed this many times. And every time it’s really stirring to see it happening right before me. Q: What do you think makes Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra stand out? HG: One of the Symphony Orchestra’s major assets is how it incorporates Chinese instruments into a full Western symphony orchestra. This creates both grandeur and distinct ethnic character. It’s an ideal combination for capturing the spirit of traditional China. Plus, I know audiences really appreciate the Chinese instruments… especially the erhu, which I love as well. A special, but less tangible, difference is what you might call the spiritual substance. What this orchestra expresses to the audience is unique. I think most audiences are able to understand our music on a higher level—they can empathize with our message. This music is about things like the meaning of life, a path to Heaven, truth, awareness, and enlightenment. We strive to sing and perform about these with a pure heart and so, be it for the audience or for us musicians— it truly speaks to your inner world.

MONKEY KING A mysterious rock is said to have absorbed the essence of Heaven and Earth for thousands of years until, one day, it gave birth to a very special monkey. He quickly rose to become king of all monkeys and, under the tutelage of a Taoist master, learned supernatural powers. Dressed in yellow hat and scarf, Monkey King has the ability to battle monsters with his long magical staff. He can also fly and can see through illusions. And he can even transform himself into anything he wants. What’s more, he can pull a hair from his head, blow on it, and turn it into more monkeys just like him. But Monkey is also mischievous—in one of his best-known shenanigans, he creates chaos in the Heavens and seems to be ruined. Yet the Goddess of Mercy appears and offers him a second chance: to serve as the monk’s first bodyguard.
THE MONK The monk is the kindhearted leader of our heroes on their journey. Tang Monk is based on a real historical figure also known as Xuan Zang or Tripitaka. A humble but distinguished person, he wears a golden headdress gifted to him by the emperor. Because he is a particularly holy man who piously follows the Buddha’s teachings, demons believe that eating his flesh will grant them immortality. When faced with danger, he relies on his disciples for protection. If they act out of line, however, he can make them behave by chanting a special spell to tighten the metal bands on their heads, giving them a terrible headache.
PIGSY Pigsy once lived in the Heavens, where he was a high-ranking navy commander in charge of 80,000 celestial warriors. However, he had a fatal attraction to Chang’e, the beautiful Goddess of the Moon, and was exiled to Earth for his inappropriate behavior. He was reborn as a pig-man creature and has become portly, greedy, lazy, and—as before—lusty. But he can still fight his share of demons with his trusty nine-toothed rake. When there’s work to be done, Pigsy’s the last to get moving, and when trouble’s in the air, he’s the first to flee. Still, when push comes to shove, Pigsy’s loyalty shines.
SANDY Like Pigsy, Sandy had once been an immortal general in the Heavens. Yet one day, he accidentally shattered a precious vase and was banished to Earth. Sandy was cursed to live as an angry, bearded ogre that shapeshifts into a giant fish and finds meager sustenance by munching on people. His fate was finally reversed when he vowed to the Goddess of Mercy to mend his ways, and she arranged for the monk to adopt Sandy as a disciple. His weapon is a double-ended spear with crescent blade on one end. He is a dependable disciple who faithfully carries the group’s belongings over the long journey.

其後玄奘啟程回國，於公元 645 年回到長安。唐太
宗親至朱雀橋邊迎接他，在大慈恩寺修建大雁塔存放玄奘 帶回來的佛經，並親做《三藏聖教序》，給予玄奘極高的 評價。玄奘及其弟子譯出佛經 75 部 1355 卷，後於公元 664 年圓寂。 吳承恩將玄奘取經的歷程加以發揮，一路上安排了 許多妖魔鬼怪、榮華富貴的誘惑和美色的考驗。 《西遊記》不僅僅是一部小說，其中有很多修煉的 隱喻，譬如 : 開篇第一回有「心性修持大道生」，告訴人

he Yao people reside in the South-West region of China, a mountainous area some 1,000 metres above sea level. Concentrated across Hunan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunan and Guangdong Provinces, they also comprise part of the ethnic populations of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. The Chinese character for Yao (瑤) means 'beautiful jade,' that which is found in its original state growing in the mountains. Thus, this ethnic group is characterised by jade's inner meanings of purity, nobility and vibrancy. Talented in singing and dancing, a well-known saying in the southern regions is: “There is not a mountain without the Yao, and with the Yao there are sure to be songs.”
Yao Folklore The Yao have a history of more than two thousand years. Legend has it that the Yao are descendents of Panhu, a divine dragon-dog that could morph itself into a man. On one occasion, Panhu defeated a hostile tribe, bringing back to King Ping the hostile chief's severed head. The king awarded Panhu by anointing him as King Pan and presented him his third daughter in marriage. Panhu remained in human form from then on, never to resume his original appearance again. They had six sons and six daughters. After Panhu’s death, his descendants continued to refer to him as King Pan and worshipped him generation after generation.
King Pan Festival Each lunar year the Yao celebrate the King Pan Festival, which was celebrated on the 16th of October this year. Depending on the size of the group, the festival can last from a couple of days to several days and is celebrated in each household and village. The ancient cultural spirit of the Yao is preserved and passed down this way.
Singing makes up most performances, with dancing, operas, fireworks and lavish feasts attended by families and friends who wear their best attire. The most popular Yao folk dance is the Long Drum Dance. It is performed with an elongated hourglassshaped drum that hangs at the performer's front by a cloth strap. The dance vividly reproduces life in a Yao village through depicting the worship of deities, building houses, hunting, ploughing and other day-to-day activities.
The Great Song of King Pan The Great Song of King Pan is one long song comprised of many smaller songs. Below are some excerpts from the Great Song of King Pan. (These songs depict the Yao legend of heaven and earth's creation, a devastating flood, the origins of the Yao, migration of Yao tribes, enduring hardship and rebirth from ashes, gratitude for the Creator, the praising of all life as well as the foretelling of a great tragedy). Here is an excerpt from the Yao song; Creation of Heaven and Earth: “King Gao created the vast heavens and Earth, dotting it with green mountains. He is the creator of the endless mountain ranges and age-old rivers.” Dim Dark Sky is a prophetic Yao song believed to foretell a great tragedy: “A toad swallows the sun, the sky turns dim and dark. Devouring the sun, it steals the Divine Land. The hearts of the populace are filled with sorrow.” (Here, the Divine Land refers to the Yao people's nation, China). And finally the song, Sentiment for a Yao Mountain: “A clear river meets a green mountain; Long drums accompany Yao songs. Young girls dance amongst flowers, Beautifying the rivers and mountains.”

he magnificent spire that defines the landmark known as Arts Centre Melbourne beckons visitors to Australia's largest and busiest performing arts venue. For more than 30 years, Arts Centre Melbourne has been host to the best local and international performing arts companies, ballet troupes, operas and orchestras, including stars such as the late Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti and Australian actor Geoffrey Rush. Last year alone, close to 1.2 million people attended over 4,000 performances and events across all its venues, according to communications and stakeholder advisor Jeremy Vincent.

The Theatres Building

There are five major performing arts spaces in Arts Centre Melbourne, “We have the largest stage in the Southern Hemisphere in the State Theatre,” said Jeremy. The large stage and elegant surroundings are just some of the reasons why Shen Yun Performing Arts, Opera Australia and the Australian Ballet perform here as their venue of choice when in Melbourne. “They love working here because the space on the stage is ideally suited for large productions,” Jeremy said. The Theatres Building is actually a 10-storey construction, but only the top floors and its spire are visible. “There are five floors underground where most of the performances happen. So, the noise from passing trams or sirens on St. Kilda road isn’t an issue.”
Hamer Hall The largest venue, the recently renovated Hamer Hall, seating 2,464, was originally opened in 1982 as the Melbourne Concert Hall. This dome-like structure boasts an extravagant John Truscott inspired interior embellished with brass, reflective surfaces, carpet and gold leaf decorated ceilings. After a two-year renovation, completed in 2012, Hamer Hall is now more than capable of supporting contemporary artists with its technology upgrade, and is glitzier than ever – the outside of this heritage protected building dazzles in the dark with its glowing effects.

“In the old days before the renovation, it was difficult for one side of the orchestra to hear what the other side was doing because the sound was not clearly projected around the room. The whole project cost over 130 million dollars to rectify the problems and to make the building more user-friendly for the audiences and the performer. A good proportion of that was in sorting out the problems of the acoustics in the auditorium.” It has been a great result, orchestras and audiences can now enjoy some of the best acoustics in the world. A newly opened space in Hamer Hall known as The Channel, is a digital education facility aligned with the school curriculum, that enables students to learn how to compose music, videos and CDs. The Channel also offers creative workshops and community events for schools, families and the general public, offering alternative ways to engage with the arts.

Q
u Yuan, a high ranking minister and an advisor to King Huai, was best known for his moral excellence and devotion to the ancient Chinese state of Chu, during a time when corruption run rampant in the Chinese courts. During the year of 260 BC, Qu Yuan was entrusted with state affairs by King Huai. Qu Yuan contended that the state of Chu should form an alliance with the northeast state of Qi, thereby gaining advantage over the large neighbouring state of Qin. The state of Chu became progressively stronger due to Qu Yuan's great influence and dedication. Jealousy however, emerged in the hearts of corrupt officials who also served under King Huai. These corrupt officials plotted together and spread malicious rumours about Qu Yuan, causing King Huai to distance himself from Qu Yuan. Finally, Qu Yuan was banished to a rural area in south China called Changsha.
asked, “Aren't you Qu Yuan? Why is it you look so sad?” Qu Yuan responded by saying, “The people of the state are irrational in their drunken stupor, only I am awake. Corruption prevails, yet I remain steadfast to integrity, and for that I have been banished.” “Since those in society are irrational in their drunken stupor, you need not insist your virtuous ways, for you should just assimilate to society. What's the point of staying clean in the growing tide of corruption? I'm not surprised you've been banished,” said the fisherman. “After a bath, one wouldn't want to wear unclean clothes. And likewise, I'm unwilling to step back into that corrupt society and dirty myself. I'd rather drown myself in this freezing river and be eaten by fish than become depraved,” said Qu Yuan. “Ah, but polluted water can still wash my feet,” sang the fisherman as he paddled away.
An Encounter with a Fisherman
Soon after, the state of Chu fell into decline and was eventually overthrown by the neighbouring state of Qin. Upon learning of this, Qu Yuan threw himself into the Miluo River and committed suicide.
After Qu Yuan was banished to Changsha, he encountered a fisherman. The fisherman had noticed the gaunt-looking Qu Yuan dismally singing to himself and

The Result of Corruption
Analysing the Fisherman's Words Subjectively speaking, the words spoken by the fisherman highlighted society's moral decline. Both the ministers and people at large were willing to follow corrupt trends in order to get by. However, Qu Yuan believed that officials should be considerate of the people and should serve society with integrity. Qu Yuan also believed that one's principles should not change in the face of corruption. Qu Yuan's suicide was completely unnecessary and a true loss to the State, provoking criticism among corrupt officials. It was regretful to see the state of Chu rise due to Qu Yuan’s moral excellence and decline due to the official's jealousy and corruption, paining Qu Yuan's heart and nullifying his contributions.
Qu Yuan's Legacy As the ancient Chinese proverb goes, “even the Yellow River becomes clear with the emerging of a saint.” Although corruption prevailed in the state of Chu and brought about its downfall, virtuous people such as Qu Yuan can always bring positive influence to an area, which was Qu Yuan's legacy.

The virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and trustworthiness form the basis of Confucian thought. These virtues greatly influenced and regulated the moral norms in ancient China for both individuals and the society.

It was Mencius that first introduced these virtues, excluding trustworthiness, at approximately 300 BC. Zhongshu Dong, a famous scholar in the Western Han Dynasty, proposed that human beings should additionally adhere to trustworthiness, and hence these virtues were collectively termed The Five Virtues. Since then, the Five Virtues have been taught and passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. Both China and surrounding Southeast Asian nations were greatly influenced by Confucianism.
A Lesson Learnt for Two Brothers There is a story that has been passed down about two brothers who served as government officials during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 – 1279). When their parents passed away, these two brothers argued back and forth for the family inheritance. Unable to resolve this dispute, they brought their case to the Appeals Court. At the time, the Appeals Court was run by religious priests. After a six-year-long dispute in the Appeals Court, with the case having passed through three court priests, one of the priests sought assistance from Zongxian Yu, a retired priest.
After considering the case, Priest Zongxian Yu wrote an inscription as follows: A mother pigeon calls for her babies when night falls, whilst a mother crow nurtures her young, and in turn her young feed their mother when grown up - This is benevolence. A deer can communicate to its herd the location of good grass, whilst a bee can alert its hive of flowers - This is righteousness. A little lamb kneels before its mother when eating, whilst a horse always shows affection toward its mother - This is propriety. A spider spins a web to catch food, whilst ants use sand to barricade the entrance to their ant hole on a rainy day - This is wisdom.
A rooster crows at dawn, whilst wild geese move only in a flock This is trustworthiness. Even animals adhere to the Five Virtues. In sharp contrast, human beings are the main inhabitants of this Earth, and humans will gain what they ought to. Despite the older brother having read thousands of works of literature, he never passed on this knowledge to his younger brother. The younger brother is well versed in the Six Arts*, so why does he still hurt his older brother? It is important to correct our mistakes, and thus introspection is essential. Priest Yu then finished his inscription with a poem: A mother gave birth to two boys; Why do they compete for the family
inheritance? So much time has passed since they ďŹ rst met; What predestination brought them together to be brothers in this life? After having read the poem, the two brothers were extremely ashamed of themselves and cried on each others shoulders. Inspired by the wisdom of The Five Virtues, the two brothers stopped fighting for the inheritance and finally returned home together. * The Six Arts: Forms the basis of education in ancient China, with the subjects of: Rites, Music, Archery, Charioteering, Calligraphy and Mathematics.

「仁、義、禮、智、信」是儒 家思想的核心範疇，兼備個人品德與 社會人倫規範。孟子始提出「仁、義、 禮、智」，至西漢董仲舒則明確「仁、 義、禮、智、信」是為五常。常者， 恆也，即恆常不變之意。 自此之後，漢地世代相承，為 人處事以五常為準則，流傳數千年並 影響東南亞諸國。人皆知禮義、明廉 恥，禽獸亦知五常，試舉一例。 宋朝江西余兆縣兄弟二人在朝 為官，官至二品，顯赫一時。兄乃翰 林院大學士沈仲仁，弟為戶部督使沈 仲義。先人過世，留下萬貫家業，為 爭家產，兄弟二人反目成仇，爭訟於 知府衙門，歷六年之久，經三任知 事，未果。 現任知事求教於余兆縣已離職 的知事余宗憲。余沉思後提筆疾書， 一氣呵成一文，讓知事貼於知府衙門 前影壁之上，書云： 鵓鴣呼雛，烏鴉反哺，仁也； 鹿得草而鳴其群，蜂見花而集其眾， 義也；羊羔跪乳，馬不欺母，禮也； 蜘蛛結網以求食，螻蟻塞穴而避水， 智也；雞非曉而不鳴，雁非社而不 移，信也。禽獸而有五常，人為萬物 之靈，豈無一得？兄通萬卷，全無教 弟之才；弟掌六科，豈有傷兄之理？ 仲仁，仁而不仁！仲義，義而不義！ 過而能改，再思可也。又批一頌： 兄弟同胞一母生 祖宗遺業何須爭 一番相見一番老 人生何時為弟兄 弟兄二人閱之，慚愧萬分，抱 頭痛哭，結伴而回，不復爭矣。

orn to hospitality Tony Nicolini spent his formative years growing up between Australia and Abruzzo Italy, working with the best in the industry, honing his skills and absorbing everything cultural around him. Tony opened his first pizzeria in 1997, alongside his father, a true pizza pioneer. What began as a humble pizzeria in suburban Melbourne has now grown into the modern Italian Gastronome that is DOC. Crowned the pizza king in The Age Epicure in 2009, Tony's journey is clear. It’s not just a quest for the perfect pizza but a quest for the perfect pizza experience! “I seek constant inspiration from my travels thru Italy. I love alternative grains and food that makes you feel good. We are more than just pizza. Our menus need to be dynamic, reflective of our society - these ingredients may be cool now but have been used for years. Italian food is the perfect vehicle for bringing people together. Family, tradition, people, social, culture... its more that just trends (fancy menus, sleek fit outs, and which ingredients are hot right now.) It is a culmination of knowledge, experience, curiosity and constant betterment. The quest for the perfect pizza, the perfect pizza experience, the perfect espresso experience. I feel we have responsibility to pass on our traditions thru our various platforms....the delis, the espresso bar and the pizzerias! We always share, teach and empower our people so that they can continue in their personal and professional growth.” Employing 150, mostly Italians, is something Tony is very proud of. “This current wave of immigration is bigger than that of our parent’s generation (migration of Italians to Australia in the 50’s and 60’s). The overall flavour was sweet coming from the pumpkin, and salty at the same time with savoury cheeses piled on. Roasted duck breast, confit leg, brussel sprouts, bacon, chestnut spaetzle The slices of duck breast were cooked to perfection, allowing the natural rich flavour of the duck to shine through. The accompanying confit leg was tender, the skin crisp while the hearty chestnut spaetzli adorned with crispy bacon provided the crowning element to this luxurious dish. Balla’s Modern Italian Restaurant The glass windows at Balla’s provide a beautiful water view for diners, perfect for a scenic Sunday lunch with the warm sun lighting the open restaurant. The roof and pillars mimicked an artistic tile display to admire. The broad range from pastas, right through to meats, vegetables and the seafood selection makes for a generous menu. Stefano Manfredi, the owner, oversees the planting of 500 square meters of garden beds that supply approximately 15% of the restaurants produce. Upon opening up the menu, I was greeted by a welcoming and reassuring quote that I had come to a true Italian establishment. The dishes were interesting and the cuisine abled me to jump out of my comfort zone. I loved the idea of using an iPad to scroll through their vast library of refined wines and I also found that the wait staff were pleasant; service was always done with a genuine smile.

Recommended Dishes Potato gnocchi with veal ragu and Montasio cheese The entrée arrived with a light and tender gnocchi tossed with the veal ragu. The ragu provided a generously seasoned taste to the dish and was evidently slow cooked for hours, showcasing the time and love invested.
Risotto with scampi, asparagus and stracciatella cheese Gluey or clumpy did not enter my mind when first met with the risotto. I valued its rich and creamy consistency, the freshness of the asparagus and the creamy and dangerously oozing cheese. 推薦菜式

Recommended Dishes Twice cooked crispy skin pork belly served with slow cooked lentil & cabbage The lentils and cabbage were light and helped to balance the star of the meal. The crispy skin pork belly was without a doubt the best I have had. The meat was beautifully tender against the salty crispy skin.
Vanilla ice cream, espresso coffee & Nocciolo liqueur & crushed nuts The dessert arrived in a martini glass, holding the scooped ice cream and having a shot of the coffee and liqueur to the side. The ice cream was smooth and creamy in consistency, having savoury crunches and coming alive when the shots were added.
