errari has revealed the F12tdf, which is the ultimate expression of the concept of an extreme road car that is equally at home on the track, and just 799 will be built. A radical redesign of the bodywork, interior, engine, transmission and running gear, along with the abundant use of carbon-fibre inside and out, has slashed 110 kg off the car’s overall weight. All of these factors combine to produce record performance figures: 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 7.9 seconds in addition to a substantial boost in lateral acceleration. Here in Melbourne, our bond with China is almost as old as the city itself. Gold brought the first Chinese migrants to the city in the 1840s and 50s, not long after the city was founded in 1835. Many stayed long after the Gold Rush, building new lives and lodgings around Melbourne’s Little Bourke Street: the beginnings of Australia’s oldest Chinatown. Chinese people and their culture have had a profound impact on our city and we are grateful for their contributions and friendship. Congratulations to the hard working editorial team on ten successful years of New Land. I wish you every success for the decade to come.

he Melbourne Cup Carnival is undoubtedly one of the world’s most renowned and successful horse racing events. After declaring the 2015 Melbourne Cup Carnival a success, Victoria Racing Club Chief Executive Simon Love said it will be remembered for the composed performance of jockey Michelle Payne—in the saddle and then in front of the cameras. Payne’s trailblazing Melbourne Cup victory sealed a fairy tale ending, becoming the first female jockey to win the race that stops a nation. Starting at the long odds of $101 with the TAB—and trained in country Victoria and ridden by a jockey struggling to pick up regular rides—Prince of Penzance’s win against arguably the strongest field ever assembled epitomises the egalitarian history of the Cup. The Myer Fashions on the Field Women’s Racewear competition culminated with Victorian winner Emily Hunter reigning supreme,

In 1862, one of Australia’s leading racehorses, Exeter, was purchased for 100 pounds by new owners in Shanghai and exported to race in China, where it went on to win more than 100 times its purchase price in prize money.” “This year, we toured the $175,000 Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy to China, Hong Kong, Japan and Malaysia, showcasing the Melbourne Cup Carnival to the region.” According to VRC’s website, Integrity, Innovation, Excellence, Collaboration, Safety and Sustainability are its members’ values. I think it might be the key reason behind the club's successful running of the event for 155 years. Despite thunderstorms on Derby Day and Oaks Day, 313,229 local, interstate and international visitors flocked to the festivities to enjoy the racing, fashion, entertainment and hospitality of the world’s most vibrant racing event.

The Power to Persevere
Ashley Wei talks about her childhood dream and shares stories from her life as a professional classical Chinese dancer with the New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts Company.

t the age of 15, the tall and lithe Ashley Wei auditioned at Fei Tian Academy of the Arts, the school that trains Shen Yun dancers. The day she was accepted, she says, “marked the beginning of my life” — a life onstage, in flowing celestial costumes, showing the world traditional Chinese culture. It also abruptly suspended her career goal of becoming a biochemical engineer. When you meet her, Wei will point out with a twinkle in her eyes that she’s a klutzy bookworm with thick glasses on her nose. You might spot her in a quiet corner of the Academy library with a Confucian classic. Her voice swells with laughter as she says, “I’m just an awkward person in general: I can look very fluid, graceful, but I trip over my own feet and drop things randomly.” The young dancer adds that she has a penchant for mathematics and science and has always had top grades. But the scholarly Wei harbored a dream in her heart to dance. After arriving in the U.S. from China with her family at age 8, Wei attended a Chinese school on weekends, which she didn’t enjoy — though she loved the Chinese ethnic dance classes taught there. She would “persevere through those terrible Chinese lessons,” she said, to keep her mother driving her to the school so she could dance. “After I came to Fei Tian,” she said, “the things we learned were more of classical Chinese culture, and those things appealed to me so much more. They’re so different, so fresh, and have so much depth to them.”

舞蹈情緣 魏佳聞出生在中國上海，8歲時隨父母移居到美 國。像大多數生長在中國大城市的孩子一樣，魏佳 聞從小便被家人寄予厚望，讓她好好學功課，將來 考個好大學，找份好工作。「其實，我小時候還是 很好動的，我記得，我經常在家裏拿著一把塑料劍 揮來揮去。可惜在中國的教育環境下，從上小學一 年級開始，學業壓力就很大了，老師也特別嚴格。 我想做個好孩子，就只能收斂自己的天性，每天乖 乖坐在教室裏聽課，回家還要完成好多作業。」 來到美國後，課業負擔減輕不少。但因為語言 不通，佳聞還是有些思念家鄉，她央求父母送她去 上中文學校，想在那裏找到熟悉親切感覺。不曾想 中文學校裏還有一個舞蹈班，佳聞看小朋友們跳得 開心，就又參加了舞蹈班。這個初級的舞蹈班只教 授一些簡單的中國民族舞，在慶祝中國新年時，讓 學生們登臺表演。這一年一度的登臺，曾是小佳聞 最期待的日子，她很喜歡穿上漂亮的演出服，在舞 臺上當「明星」的感覺。以至到了後來，中文課越 來越難，佳聞不想繼續學了。父母對她說，妳要是不 學中文，也不許學跳舞了，她立即大喊：「No！」， 就這樣居然把學習中文也一直堅持了下來。 跳了幾年之後，父母想讓佳聞受些更正規的訓 練，就送她去學芭蕾。但隨著學校裏的課業越來越 緊張，加上中規中矩的芭蕾舞不像之前的舞蹈那麼

An important component of her training involves studying ancient Chinese classics. “We would learn all these things of the ancient people — what they would learn, and how they would think, and how they would treat their world.”
When life began In 2008, Wei saw a Shen Yun performance with her parents. She was amazed and deeply touched by the beautiful, graceful Shen Yun dancers. It was so perfect, so stunning, she felt her dream of dance awakening. Her parents and friends encouraged her to audition for the Fei Tian school, but Wei felt sure she wouldn’t be accepted, being so clumsy. Her awkwardness indeed followed her like a puppy to the Fei Tian audition. She demonstrated her strength and flexibility and had the requisite long, slender body, but when doing a back bend, her glasses dropped comically to the floor, and everyone laughed. Now she felt sure her last chance was gone. When the teachers told her that she could try one month at Fei Tian, she was shocked. After a month, she was invited to stay, and since then, she’s been eating, sleeping and breathing classical Chinese dance in upstate New York with the company. “Before that, I was just following what seemed to be a preset path. I was just doing what I was supposed to do without knowing why.”
Chosen to tour “When you are one of the non-touring students, sometimes you see the older girls and think, ‘Wow, I can’t believe it, this is so cool — they get to have costumes made for them, and they get to go on tour.’ I never imagined it would ever happen to me.” But one day new members were to be chosen for touring, and the teacher and artistic director came into the classroom to pick someone. “I was just doing my bar movements, and quietly cheering on my friend, ‘‘Oh, you can do this, you can do

意料之外 恰好教授正統中國古典舞的專業學府——「紐 約飛天藝術學院」，也在演出城市舉行舞蹈演員招生 考試。佳聞在親朋好友的鼓勵下，決定前去試一試。 來到考場，老師要求佳聞做了下叉、下腰等動作。佳 聞表現得很努力，可是，一個小小的「事故」卻打擊 了她的信心。「一下腰時，我的眼鏡掉下來了，周圍 人都忍不住笑起來，真是夠尷尬的。」考試結束後， 佳聞對錄取沒報多大希望。然而，「飛天藝術學院」 的招生老師們注意到，佳聞的身體條件非常適合跳 舞，纖細修長，還有不錯的軟度和彈跳。她如同一塊 剛被挖掘出的璞玉，等待著工匠們的潛心雕琢。 兩週之後，佳聞收到了來自「飛天藝術學院」 的電話，讓她去紐約參加下一輪面試。儘管對自己能 入圍複試感到有些不可思議，但佳聞的心中還是燃起 了些許希望。抱著試試看的想法，她在父母的陪伴 下，來到了紐約。 「我當時還是沒報多大希望，看到後臺那麼多 人在準備，有的在壓腿、伸展啊！都很專業，我就更 覺得自己不行了。」但考試的結果卻再次出乎她的意 料，老師告訴她可以在「飛天」待一個月試一下。佳 聞愣住了，看看周圍，那些在她看來比自己強得多的 考生，許多都沒有被錄取的，此刻正在傷心地哭泣。 她迷迷糊糊來到外面，看到等在那裏的父母，頓時忍 不住也哭了起來。「他們以為我沒考上難過，其實， 我來的時候，壓根沒想過會考上。結果卻考上了，想 到自己就要留在紐約，不能跟父母回家了，我就哭了 起來。」哭過之後，佳聞還是決定要留下來，她的專 業舞蹈生涯就這樣意外地展開了。
刻苦鑽研 儘管讀書時，佳聞的成績很好，學舞蹈也有一 些基礎，但開始專業正規的訓練之後，她還是遇到 了許多不同以往的困難和挑戰。「學舞蹈不像做數 學題，只要記住公式，多做幾遍，就會了、熟了， 考試就能拿高分。舞蹈先要練肢體的控制力，要身

this! I hope you have a good time!’” Then the teacher gestured directly at Wei. “What?” she thought, in a daze. She followed them to another room where the touring group smiled and waved at her. “It wasn’t until later that I fully comprehended that I had been chosen,” she says.
Stunning the world “I see everyone around me struggle [with circumstances on tour], but they try to make the best of it. Sometimes the stage floor is very hard. I see the guys cringing every time they come offstage after a flip.” Wei and her fellow dancers become like one to create flowing scenes of ethereal beauty — graceful fairies, faithful warriors, cherry blossom groves beneath emerald mountains, and humorous stories of little monks. “At the end, when the curtain opens one last time and you see everyone in the audience — some are still stunned, some people are wiping tears from their eyes, some people are just smiling at us, and we feel like everything is worth it. And it gives us the power to keep going,” Wei says, smiling. Once, after their last show in Japan, Wei and a few other Shen Yun dancers went out to see the city. A couple came up to them in a food court. “They started speaking to us in Japanese, and we had no idea what they were saying... Then they pulled out tickets — they’d just watched our show,” she says. “We were like, ‘Oh, yeah, yeah, that’s us!’ And then they bowed to us very deeply... and they said, ‘Bravo!’ and we could understand. We smiled and nodded, and then the woman bowed to us, and her husband did, too. We were just so touched by her, because she didn’t know how to express her words, but she tried so hard and had tears in her smiling eyes.” We asked the bookworm-turned-professional dancer what she would say to people who still think about pursuing their dreams. “If your dream is an unselfish one, one that benefits others,” Wei says, “then no matter what happens, that itself will give you the power to persevere and to ultimately succeed.” 50

體怎樣，它就能怎樣。身體慢慢會用了，再去細扣每 一個動作。」佳聞告訴我們，她剛開始學中國古典舞 時，經常抓不住竅門，用的全是拙勁。「比如胳膊的 伸展，我覺得自己已經在拚命把胳膊伸直向外探了， 可老師告訴我是要用肩背的力量把胳膊送出去，意識 也要跟隨著一起向外延伸，這樣才會讓人感覺胳膊的 動作很舒展。」 經過認真地揣摩之後，佳聞慢慢地掌握了中國古 典舞的一些要領。原來看似動作千變萬化的舞蹈，也 不是無跡可尋。每一個動作都有它特定的規範和運行 方式，腿要抬多高，眼神該看向哪裏，身體的哪一塊 肌肉該繃緊，哪一塊又該鬆弛，都來不得半點馬虎。 這讓佳聞覺得，原來舞蹈和解數學題，還有些相通之 處，每一個動作都好比一道題，需要用特定的公式和 方法去一步步得到正確的答案。這種藝術上的嚴謹和 規範正是傳統中國古典舞不同於現代舞蹈的特徵之 一。 那規範的表現形式會不會讓舞蹈變得呆板和乏味 呢？當然不會，因為中國古典舞的精髓——「身韻」 ，是靠內在的情感來帶動的。在演繹不同的舞蹈時， 演員會有不同的內心感受，同一個動作也會在幅度節 奏和細節上有著豐富的變化。佳聞為我們講述了她對 《大唐仕女》和《大清格格》這兩個舞蹈的不同體 悟。同樣都是溫婉典雅的中國古代女子，唐代的女子 動作雍容大氣，快板音樂時，肢體舒展、運動幅度比 較大，看上去很有氣勢。而腳踩花盆鞋的大清格格， 就更細膩精緻一些。動作不大，但從指間到腳尖都藏 著精雕細琢的微妙變化，有著儀態萬方的優雅。
積水成淵 經過一番不懈地努力，在2010年時，佳聞終 於入選了她夢寐以求的「神韻藝術團」，並參加了 當年的全球巡演。回憶起自己入選「神韻」的那一 天，佳聞至今記憶猶新。「那天，『神韻』的編導 老師來我的班裏選演員，我還是有些不自信，覺 得不會選我吧！就繼續把桿練習，也沒多關注。結 果，有位老師徑直走過來告訴我，我被選中了。我 吃了一驚，心中默默地嘀咕：啊？是我嗎？確定？ 然後，就茫然地跟著大家，來到了『神韻』排練新 節目的現場。」 提起一次次發掘和栽培她的老師們，佳聞心 中非常感激。「我之前聽說過『仁、義、禮、智、

信』等中國傳統文化理念，但沒想過把那麼久

之前的文化帶到今天來做。比如見到老師要問
他們，我應該在行為上把這種敬意表達出來，
好，這麼簡單一件事，我起初卻總做不來，也
讓老師知道我的感恩。後來，見到老師就自然
就會點頭笑一下。」她說，在來到「飛天藝術

禮」才如此重要。

藏，在藏語中的意思為「招」，召喚之意。藏字的下 半部從「戕」從「臣」，乃忠臣殺身成仁之意。加草字頭成 「藏」，意為銷聲匿跡。 西藏地理奇特，氣候惡劣，加上藏民特殊的生活習 俗，使西藏蒙上了一層神秘的面紗。藏民視山為聖山，湖為 聖湖，常在山川、河流、湖泊周圍插滿了各色飄揚的經幡。 他們認為自然界的一切都是神靈化身，不可侵犯。正是藏民 內心對天地的敬畏，使西藏得以保存純淨的山水。

he geography in Tibet is striking, the climate is harsh and the atmosphere is severely dry. Due to the special culture and customs of the Tibetan people, Tibet has always been considered a mysterious place to both Westerners and Easterners alike. Colourful prayer flags can be found strung along mountain ridges, peaks, river crossings and lakes. The wind blows the compassionate prayers spreading goodwill to all. Tibetans consider all substances and lives to be incarnations of spirits, which should not be harmed. Tibetans respect and revere Heaven and Earth, thus their mountains and rivers maintain their purity and are considered holy.
Khatas Khatas are a traditional Tibetan scarf commonly made of cotton or silk and come in varying lengths. The scarf is generally made in shades of white or ivory symbolising purity. Khatas are offered to express respect and gratitude to the Divine, respected lamas, teachers and elders. Khatas are also presented at special events to celebrate and show affection to others. The presenting of a khata is one of the most well known Tibetan customs. The person first bows and then folds the khata in half lengthwise. The khata is given with the open ends facing the receiver, representing a pure heart, free of any negative thoughts or motives in the offering.

Pilgrims are a common sight on Tibet's snowy plateau; many of whom aim to pilgrimage to the sacred Jokhang Monastery (House of the Lord), at least once in their lives. At every three steps the pilgrim prostrates him/herself on the long and arduous journey, taking years in some cases to complete. Food is obtained through begging. These devout pilgrims have hearts of compassion, determined to show their reverence to the Divine. For many, a life of spiritual devotion is favoured over the materialistic life.

The Ancient Tea-Horse Road. 茶馬古道
The Ancient Tea-Horse Road For thousands of years, the Ancient Tea-Horse Road was traversed by caravans winding through the mountains of SouthWest China, South-East Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal and India, totalling 10,000 kilometres. It was via this central trade route that tea first spread across Asia. The name Tea-Horse Road came about from the common trade of Tibetan ponies for Chinese tea. Tea porters traversing these routes would sometimes carry over 90kg of tea on their backs. Blizzards and extreme weather conditions made travel on these winding paths especially dangerous. The biggest trading station was in Sichuan, China. Caravans from as far as Europe came here to trade their goods for tea, silk, salt, medicine and so on.

Potala Palace At over 3,700 meters (12,000 ft) above sea level, the Potala Palace is the highest located palace in the world. Tens of thousands of brilliant paintings, murals, jewelled works, carvings, ornamentation and cultural treasures are kept in the more than 1,000 rooms of this 13-story building. Its chapels, halls, libraries and rooms reflect rich decorative Tibetan art. Approximately 200,000 gold, silver and copper statues of divine beings such as Buddhas, Bodh i sa t t va s, De i t i e s a n d La w guardians are kept here. The Potala Palace's principal building, called the Red Palace, has a chamber dedicated to Maitreya, the Future Buddha. Ancient scriptures and prophecies tell of the Holy King Who Turns the Wheel, referred to as Maitreya, who will descend to

The solemn-looking seated statue of Buddha Maitreya is 3.66 metres in height and is depicted performing symbolic mudras with His hands. He dons a gold crown composed of five lotus flower petals that are intricately hand-crafted, adorned with studded jewels and embossed with a seated Buddha on each petal. The humanoid bird-like guardian deity known as a Garuda seen above the seated Maitreya is portrayed with flames on its head grasping an evil dragon in its beak and claws. This can be understood to mean the Garuda will help Maitreya to rid the world of evil, saving sentient beings.

The Miraculous
Chinese Pyrola Herb

The Compendium of Materia Medica, the most comprehensive Chinese medical book, lists a miraculous herb that has been proven effective in healing cuts and wounds, called the Chinese Pyrola herb or Wintergreen. This herb’s healing efficacy became known from the below ancient Chinese legend. Li Shimin, who was the Duke of Qin, was one day presented with a sacred sword. While testing the sword, the Duke accidentally cut his arm and blood began spurting out. In great pain, he threw away the sword, but in the process accidentally cut a white monkey that was squatting near him. The monkey calmly grabbed some leaves from nearby and applied them to its wound. This stopped the bleeding in no time. The Duke saw this and followed the monkey’s lead, picking up the same type of leaves and applying them to his own injury. His bleeding quickly stopped as well. Since the herb's healing efficacy was discovered, it has been used to help many people in need. Li Shimin, before becoming Emperor of the Tang Dynasty, led his troops into many battles. His soldiers constantly experienced cuts from knives and swords. They learnt to use the Chinese Pyrola herb to treat their wounds, so that they could quickly return to their duties. The Compendium of Materia Medica expounds on the Chinese Pyrola herb's indication for bleeding wounds,

noting that it can also detoxify bites from snakes, bugs and dogs. Let us take a look at what other medical texts say about the Chinese Pyrola herb. Another version of the aforementioned medical text, the Materia Medica of Southern Yunan, states: “It treats pains in the tendons and bones, and also alleviates phlegm-fire. Add a little wine to the decoction before drinking.” A more recent publication, Sichuan Chinese Herbal Medicine, says: “It dispels wind and eliminates dampness; eases fright palpitations and night sweats; treats tuberculosis, vomiting of blood, sore tendons and bones, rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy and carbuncles.” The compendium, Shanxi Chinese Herbal Medicine states: “The herb tones the kidneys and invigorates the yang, activates the blood to regulate menstruation and inhibits bleeding. It can treat coughing due to consumptive illnesses, kidney deficiencies and night sweats, waist and knee weakness, rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis, hemiplegia, uterine bleeding, white vaginal discharge, conjunctivitis and various types of haemorrhaging.” I myself have used the Chinese Pyrola herb, which has proven to be effective in treating kidney conditions and sciatica, which is a painful condition that eventually leads to weakness in the waist and knees.

《本草綱目》記載了一種治療創傷的藥草，名叫「小 秦王草」，又叫「秦王試劍草」。為何這味藥草稱作「秦 王」，又與「試劍」有關呢？ 以前，隋煬帝荒淫無道，民不聊生，許多諸侯起兵 討伐。為了平天下 ，秦王李世民輔佐唐王李淵起兵。 一天，有個修煉很久的千年白猿見秦王是未來的真 命天子（唐太宗），就誠心誠意的贈送一把寶劍給秦王。 秦王試劍時，一不小心割傷了自己的手，血流不止。 秦王疼得拋開寶劍，一不留神，利鋒也傷到了贈劍的白 猿。 但見白猿不慌不忙，隨手摘了一把草敷在傷口上， 血很快的就止了。秦王見狀，依樣畫葫蘆，也摘了幾片 草敷在傷口上，血很快就止住了。
古籍《滇南本草》云：「治筋骨疼痛、痰火之症，
秦王帶兵士們東征西討，士卒們不免受傷，他們就
煎點水酒服。」近代的《四川常用中草藥》云：「祛風除
使用同樣的藥草敷傷，很快就可以痊癒。因此，這個藥草
濕，止驚悸，盜汗。治癆傷吐血，筋骨酸軟，風濕關節痛，
也被稱為「小秦王草」、「秦王試劍草」了。

ropriety is considered the most important of the five virtues*. It is the primary virtue applied when governing a nation. The ancient Chinese said, “never discard propriety.” The Chinese character for propriety is “禮”, pronounced Li. The left radical of this character means “to show”. The right section refers to a curved bean. This character can be understood to mean that when carrying out propriety, people should be like bean sprouts, bowing and lowering their heads in polite gesture. Propriety in ancient China refers to the act of worshipping. The most significant act of worship in ancient China was sacrificial rites, that is, to worship the Divine. Performing sacrificial rites requires utmost sincerity from the heart. The ancients had deep respect for both Heaven and Earth. *The Five Virtues: benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and trustworthiness.
禮貴為五常之首，是治理天下之道，先人說：禮不 可廢。「禮」，左邊為「示」，右邊為「曲豆」，意指 人像豆子發芽時彎曲身子，低下頭顱，以示虔誠，此為 禮的字意。 禮，就是履行敬拜。中國古代最重要的是祭禮，祭 禮是由內而外，至誠的奉行禮法，敬天畏地。所以，只 有賢明者才能闡發祭禮的內涵。 《禮記 . 祭統》記載了祭祀的十種意義：第一是體 現事奉鬼神之道；第二是體現君臣之義；第三是體現父 子人倫；第四是體現貴賤等級；第五是體現親疏有別； 第六是體現爵賞的施行；第七是體現夫婦之別；第八是 體現政事公平；第九是體現長幼有序；第十是體現上下 關係。

Jade's Significance in the Worship of Heaven
Respecting One's Teacher
Jade was considered the most beautiful of all precious stones and had a status-value exceeding that of gold and silver. Jade is prized for its virtuous symbolism, specifically, its five features of benevolence, righteousness, determination, courageousness and purity. As such, it was used as an offering to the divne.
“A teacher for a day is my father for life.” This Chinese saying denotes the most important propriety in ancient Chinese daily life - respecting one's teacher. Proprieties for students in ancient China were as follows:
Worshipping Heaven During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the emperor, who was considered the Son of Heaven, acted as high priest in a ceremony to worship heaven on Winter solstice each year. The ceremony was held in the Temple of Heaven, situated in the Forbidden City, located in the South East part of central Beijing. Three days prior to this ritual, the emperor abstained from meat, wine, women and music to demonstrate his devoutness toward Heaven for two days. On the day prior to the ceremony the emperor, dressed in an imperial robe, conducted special rites in the Hall of Central Harmony. He would then go into the Hall of Abstinence, located inside the Temple of Heaven and stayed there for the night. Worshipping Heaven was conducted outside at dawn on the triple-tiered marble Circular Mount Alter. The emperor began the ceremony on the middle platform. He would walk to the upper platform to kneel down with an offering of incense for Heaven, to walk back to the middle platform kneeling three times and kowtowing nine times. Following this, he would return to the upper platform with provisions of jade and silk offered on his knees. The emperor would then go to the middle platform to get a small cup of wine, returning to the upper platform to offer the wine on his knees and kowtow three times. The act of offering wine was repeated three times, so three cups of wine were offered to Heaven. The ceremony would conclude with both emperor and chancellors kneeling three times and kowtowing nine times. Sacrificial offerings were then offered as provisions to the Divine after the ceremony. In addition to the above mentioned rite of offering jade, silk and wine, the emperor would travel back and forth from the middle to upper platforms 19 times, kneel 31 times and kowtow 66 times in this ceremony to worship heaven.

Should the royal teachers' understanding of propriety be lacking, the crown prince won't learn properly.” Emperor Taizong then issued an imperial edict for each successive crown prince to obey, these are:
To greet his three teachers outside the palace gates Bow to his three teachers Always walk behind his teachers and never in front Sit only after his teachers have sat Every article is to be proceeded with a respectful salutation A respectful valediction is to end each article This goes to show that even the crown prince has his proprieties that he must obey, respecting his teachers was at the top of the list. Emperor Taizong was truly befitting his position of great responsibility, he truly knew what propriety was all about.
祭天之禮 玉，石之美者，有五德：仁、義、志、勇、潔。以 玉祭天，比喻天地之德如玉。祭禮中以祭天最為重要， 明清兩代，每年的祭天活動都由皇帝在天壇舉行，天壇 位於北京南郊的子午線（中軸）上。 冬至祭天─皇帝率大臣在冬至日祭天，舉行有關告 祭儀式。遇天氣久旱無雨時，也在這舉行求雨儀式，盼 望上天降雨解除旱情。 祭前三天，皇帝先在紫禁城內齋戒兩天，即不見婦 女，不食葷酒，不聽音樂，以示對上天虔誠。祭前一天， 皇帝要身穿龍袍到中和殿行禮，晚上到天壇，住進天壇 西門內的齋宮。 祭天典禮在黎明開始，皇帝從中層平台走到上層天 帝牌位前下跪上香，然後返回中層行三跪九叩大禮。再 上去跪獻玉帛，又上去三次獻三杯酒，每次都要一跪三 叩。最後率領陪祭群臣再行三跪九叩大禮，然後撤供， 將供品送進火爐中燒掉，由神靈在天上享用。皇帝祭天 時，要由中層平台至上層往返 19 次，下跪 31 次，叩頭 66 次。
敬師之禮 中國古代日常生活中，禮之重者，禮之恆者，為尊 師之禮。古有訓 :「一日為師，終身為父。」身為弟子， 應當不忘師恩，體諒師心；遵從師訓；繼承師志；遵行 師道；了師之願，此為弟子本分。 貞觀十七年，唐太宗對司徒長孫無忌、司空房玄齡 說：「三師是以德行來教導太子的人。如果三師的身份 卑下，太子就沒有學習的榜樣。」於是下詔，讓人編撰 太子接待三師的禮儀制度。 太子要走出殿門迎接師父，先禮拜三師，然後三師 答拜。過門時，要讓三師在前。三師坐下後，太子才能 坐。 寫給三師的書信，前邊稱「惶恐」，後邊再寫上「惶 恐再拜」。一國太子對其教導的老師仍需惶恐再拜，太 宗真知禮也。

The Yellow River Chart and the Luo River Square

T
he culture of the Han people (the largest ethnic group in China), can be traced back to the Yellow River Chart and Luo River Square, some 5,000 years ago. Since then, these diagrams have been passed down from generation to generation. Throughout China's successive dynasties, replicas of these ancient diagrams were housed in imperial palaces and were considered scholarly pieces. Commoners were unable to access these collections. Before the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (771-221 BC), emperors in every dynasty inspected the Yellow River Chart and Luo River Square personally. However only virtuous emperors were able to fully understand these collections. In contrast, ordinary emperors lacking such high integrity could not achieve good understandings. As a result, these collections could only be used decoratively by imperial families. Later on, the Yellow River Chart and Luo River Square were spread to Emperor Wen of the Zhou Dynasty (1100-221 BC), who created the Book of Changes, which became one of the most influential divination texts in Chinese history.

The Yellow River Chart As legend has it, a dragon horse surfaced from the Yellow River. The Yellow River Chart was carried on the back of this dragon horse and was offered to Fu Xi, a cultural hero who lived some 5,000 years ago. The Eight Diagrams, which are prominently used in Taoist cosmology, was also a development based on the Yellow River Chart. The ancient Chinese learnt a lot from the Yellow River Chart. The wisdom gained from the chart and profound influence it had on Chinese culture led to the establishment of Feng Shui, geography and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Yellow River Chart is believed to reveal the layout of mountains and rivers as well as the permutations of celestial bodies and galaxies. Meanwhile, it allegedly explains the changes and variations of astronomical phenomenon and determine changes in human society. The ancient Chinese people believe that the rise and decline of dynasties are all regulated and can be predicted.
The Luo River Square In the same time period, during the reign of legendary Chinese ruler Yu the Great, a mystical turtle surfaced from the Luo River, with what is known as the Luo River Square inscribed on its shell. As it appeared on the turtle's shell, the Luo River Square consists of a 3 x 3 grid, with an arrangement of dots in several positions. Regardless of which line you look at, each line adds up to 15. Yu the Great enlightened to instructions hidden in the number sequences of the Luo River Square and as such, was able to control and mitigate the Great Flood of China, which had caused devastation for two generations. Very few have been able to fully understand these collections. Even when it comes to the Book of Changes, most people are unable to truly comprehend the real inner meanings conveyed.

hen I first heard this piece 20 years ago I was overcome by its melody and technique. From personal experience, what it expressed was grief, indignation and injustice. The piece begins by depicting the befalling of hardship. Facing this, the gypsies flee their homes. They earn a meagre living through giving street performances. Suffering from hunger and thirst, humiliation and verbal abuse, they struggle throughout their lives by constantly falling and getting up. A soft and delicate segment in the middle expresses sadness. It illustrates the gypsy's life, one full of wandering, helping and encouraging each other amid hardship. The concluding segment depicts a firm belief in the meaning of life, something unwavering, despite painful ordeals through facing the extreme cold, sickness, hunger and death. 20 years after my first experience

listening to Zigeunerweisen, I listened to the piece again, this time performed live by the Shen Yun Orchestra. This time, my whole perception changed. I understood the opening of this piece depicted a sage, one who was not helpless when facing adversity, rather, joyful. His home is wherever he so journeys in the world, with the sky as his blanket and the earth as his bed. His wisdom allows him to perceive both the past and present. No one knows his origin, nor does anyone know his destination. He effortlessly deflects the multitude of hardships thrust on him. He has dominion over his own fate, steering his own course in life. A slower melody reflected the following scene in my mind. The sage stops a tide of decline, inspiring hope of renewal for tens of thousands of lives. He endures unprecedented suffering on behalf of others. His purpose is unwavering in the face of numerous hardships. The piece, particularly in the
middle, continues to unravel the journey of this sage. He inspires many with mercy. The conclusion reflects the elevation of people's state of mind. They care not for their own suffering, their innate kind selves re-appear and the fog of delusion dissipates. Suffering only strengthens their selfless ambition. A brilliant future awaits them. As a Chinese person, what came to mind after listening to this piece was the arduous efforts and suffering that accompanied the establishment of the 5,000 year-old Chinese civilisation. The land of China used to be called Shenzhou, which means the Land of the Divine. Ancient Chinese culture leads people to consider the truth of life and of the universe. In this current age where the Chinese culture has faced almost utter destruction at the hands of the communist regime, I hope the Chinese people do not forgo the Divine that once helped establish this age-old culture. I hope this glorious culture can one day re-appear in China.

Melbourne’s Camberwell Girls Grammar School (CGGS) is proud of its Latin motto, Utilis in Ministerium, meaning Useful in Service. More than just a relic of a bygone age, the motto is the very cornerstone of this thoroughly modern school’s philosophy. speaking with archaeologists from digs in Turkey and coming face-toface with sharks whilst speaking with underwater divers researching the Great Barrier Reef. It is not just technology that is embraced, but also curriculumbased overseas trips to enrich the girls' learning, such as study tours to China, France or Germany for those studying languages. A recent journey to the USA revealed just how interactive CGGS’s science classes can be with the girls experiencing “zero gravity” through astronaut training at NASA Space Camp. The school's wide ranging Social Justice Program is aimed at lending support to third world nations and the local community with an intention to develop a fundamental sense of humility and empathy. Last year the school supported over 50 organisations in social justice initiatives.
The school recently raised money to support women and children in Cambodia and Vietnam who were being subjected to human rights abuses. “We're very privileged to have the education that we have. What's important is what you do with it and you don't have to wait until you finish school. You can start now, learning how you can give to others and support others. That's really important at CGGS,” Debbie said. A large performing arts complex is behind the school's outstanding tradition in music. Other facilities include a swimming pool and gymnasium, and sunfilled classrooms open up onto large open spaces enabling the girls to
collaborate in groups. A brand new building is underway for a growing student population, attracted by the school’s student-focused curriculum that ranks it favourably among Victoria's top schools. Based in Melbourne's Inner-East, CGGS has a welcoming feel, even more evident in its friendly staff. Principal Debbie Dunwoody recalls a recent lunch with Year 12 girls, “I asked the different groups what has been the best thing about Camberwell Girls? The most common response by far was: the teachers.” A special community formed through teacher-student bonding has sparked creativity in learning, teaching and lesson planning. “As a principal, I try as much as I can to
get out and get to know the students. The challenges are ensuring that we always remain relevant. I think creativity is important,” she said. Debbie Dunwoody is proud of the many talented individuals produced by this open entry school who have gone on to become company directors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, even celebrities including Cecilia Cheung, a Hong Kong actress and pop star. “The girls leave the school having a sense of themselves and a sense of community. Many of our girls do want to go on and make a difference to the lives of others. They go out as confident young women with purpose and that's really what our vision is.”

The Coast and St Helens In under two hours from Cradle Mountain, you hit the coast and St Helens, a much-loved seaside haven. No need to push through the throngs of sun lovers to find a spot. In fact, most of the time you will have the beach all to yourself. Nearby is Bay of Fires - a truly special region with clean white beaches, blue water and granite rocks splashed with orange lichen. It's not surprising that Lonely Planet named the Bay of Fires as one of the world's hottest travel destinations. Beach activities and bird-watching are popular in this beautiful reserve. You may even see a pod of dolphins as they cruise along parallel to the beach. The area is also known for its snorkelling and diving, with scenic reefs, corals, underwater caves and abundant sea life. Leaving the north east corner, embark on the Great Eastern Drive. From here, the highway hugs the coast, taking in vast stretches of white beaches, delicious food, wineries, and panoramic views that will have you pulling over every few minutes. There’s good reason this coastal drive is one of Australia’s greatest road trips.

At roughly half the size of Switzerland the park is immense. From tidal mudflats, coastal areas and floodplains to monsoon forest, savanna woodlands and stone country the Kakadu delivers a staggering variety of landscapes. In the dry season visitors can walk to the famous Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls while in the wet they can take helicopter rides to view the cascading torrents of water in
full fury. The majestic waterfalls also give rise to naturally occurring infinity edge pools high in the rock escarpment that provide breathtaking views. Kakadu is considered one of the largest parks in the world’s tropics. It contains the greatest variety of ecosystems out of anywhere on the Australian continent. This gives rise to a tremendous diversity of plant and animal species. Kakadu includes one quarter of Australia’s land mammals and an exceptionally high number of reptile, frog and fish species.
The limited impact of European settlement on the park has allowed for the protection and conservation of its habitats and species, which remain relatively intact and unchanged. Aboriginal guided tours of rock art sites, intriguing boat cruises and the chance to sample a variety of cuisine including fresh barramundi, crocodile and bush tucker are part of the park’s many attractions. From family groups to individuals looking for an adventure, Kakadu delivers an unforgettable experience of Australia’s ancient landscape and culture.

Great Barrier Reef Structure As the largest living structure on the planet, the Great Barrier Reef is incredibly rich and diverse. Stretching 2,300 kilometres, this natural icon is so large it can even be seen from outer space. While it’s known mostly for its large maze of colourful reefs, its intricate architecture also provides a home for a huge number of plants and animals. Within this vast expanse are a unique range of ecological communities, habitats and species – all of which make the Reef one of the most complex natural ecosystems in the world. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park covers 344,400 km2 in area, which is bigger than the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Holland combined. It includes the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem and includes some 3000 coral reefs, 600 continental islands, 300 coral cays and about 150 inshore mangrove islands.

Cullen Vineyard is one the best vineyards in Western Australia besides Moss Wood, Leeuwin, Cape Mentelle, Pierro, Vasse Felix and so on. Cullen is located in the heart of the Margaret River area in Western Australia, 4323 Caves Rd Wilyabrup, WA. Cullen was planted in 1971 and with major Bordeaux varieties, Riesling and Gewurztraminer. Since the owner, Kevin 1994 and Diana 2003 passed away, their daughter, Vanya, took over and was awarded winemaker of the year in 2000. In 2010, their “Kevin John” 2007 Chardonnay was awarded the best chardonnay in the world at a major wine challenge in Europe. And their Diana Madeline cabernet merlot was named in Langton’s exceptional listing.

2013 Cullen Kevin John Chardonnay It seems vintage after vintage, the white varietals quality continues to shine in this corner of Western Australia. It makes this wine a legend of its own right. The 2012 had scored 98 points from Halliday. Campbell Mattinson also named 2013 is amongst the best he had seen: “Rich and luscious but then steely and exquisitely long”. “The weather leading up to and including vintage was warm [and] the fruit produced by all varieties in the vineyards of Cullen Wines in 2013 was exceptional. Yields were down but the quality of the harvest is looking even better than last year.” Sensational fruits. Colour: Bright golden Straw colour Aroma: Intense citrus, pear and tropical fruit aromas with elegant oak overtone. Palate: Rich and complex, combining fresh pear, grapefruit, lime and papaya flavours. A good mineral structure with citrusy acidity leads to a wonderfully balanced taste with a lingering creamy oak flavour. Cellar: Drinking superbly and will age gracefully for at least 10 years

Booking at sunset was a magical experience for my group that accompanied 8 seats. Admiring the sun's reflection on the water, I witnessed that million-dollar view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge from my position. The restaurant proved it had character in this change. I thought that service was flawless for our group and the staff were extremely knowledgeable and friendly, guiding our choices with the adequate variety on the a la carte menu. I believe the quality, views and atmosphere justify the pricing and I highly recommend a visit for all reading this.

The scallops were moist and tender, as expected, and married with the other elements on the plate, especially the saffron mayonnaise. Turkish delight vacherin ─ Strawberry salad, marshmallow ice cream The berries and ice-cream are a classic combination and sat well in the petite glass. Overall, it was a lovely fresh dessert to end the night.
