he latest name to join Kate Spade’s cast of characters: Brit mod Jourdan Dunn, who looks fresh-faced and flirty in the adorable spring’16 campaign (with Dalmatians to
boot). The ads spotlight the latest pieces from the core New York collection, which feature the new Broome Street and Madison Avenue labels. Shot by Emma Summerton, the eclectic cast also includes fashion muse and Kate Spade fave Iris Apfel; actress, model, and photographer Syrie Moscowitz; fashion illustrator Robert W. Richards; artist, actress, and model Anh Duong; author Karley Sciortino; and musician and composer Jon Batiste. The First Pilot's Watch With an Annual Calendar On the front of the Big Pilot’s Watch Annual Calendar Edition “Le Petit Prince”, the feature that stands out first and foremost is the attractive colour combination. Combined with the red gold of the case, hands and appliqués as well as the dark brown of the Santoni calfskin strap, the shimmering blue sun-pattern finish on the dial underscores the exclusive character of this timepiece. If we look more closely, we discover three separate windows, arranged in a semicircle at “12 o’clock”, which show the month, date and day of the week. hen Kexin Li, principal dancer with Shen Yun Performing Arts, recounted how she reached the artistic level she is at today, she smoothed over the twists and turns and ups and downs of her story so it almost sounded uneventful. Now at the top echelon in what some say is the finest performing arts company in the world, her journey was anything but.
An eye for beauty
Li’s eyes are always smiling because she’s exceptional at discovering and appreciating beautiful things. Born in China, she immigrated to New Zealand with her mother when she was 12 years old. That pristine, magnificent landscape seemed to open its arms to young Li and spread out the very picture of nature in front of her. “Growing up, I studied drawing and loved photography. I still do, especially landscape photography,” she said. “After travelling all over the world, New Zealand’s beauty is still my favourite. Photographs of New Zealand look like carefully composed landscape

paintings to me.” Was the transition from visual artist to performing artist a natural one? Not for Li. “I had the height and flexibility of a dancer,” she said, but not the desire to be one. Even though her family urged her to apply to the top classical Chinese dance school in the world, Fei Tian Academy of the Arts, “I never considered becoming a professional dancer. I was so immersed in my world of photography and painting.” She took the entrance exam anyway and was accepted in 2007. But she let the registration period slip by, opting to stay in New Zealand. When the entrance exam came around again, she threw her hat in once more, albeit apathetically. She didn’t pass. However, after taking the test for the third time and being admitted in 2008, Li’s heart finally aligned with a career in classical Chinese dance. Something had altered her course. “It was because I saw two consecutive performances of Shen Yun,” she said. In April 2008, Shen Yun toured New Zealand for the first time. Parliament members sent messages of support, the chief of New Zealand’s native Maori people wrote a poem to welcome them, the country’s leading artists attended on opening night, and Chinese people who attended the show were deeply touched to see their culture at its best. What Li had only dreamed artistically possible was suddenly right before her eyes when the curtain rose. Sweeping, animated backdrops and handmade costumes from China’s dynasties and ethnicities were brought to life by graceful, dynamic dancers. Li didn’t drag her feet again. Instead of searching with a camera in the mountains and the seaside for snippets of beauty, she decided it was better to devote herself to creating extraordinary heavenly scenes and other visual feasts with Shen Yun artists, many of whom are graduates of Fei Tian Academy. After her third and final entrance exam, she boarded a plane for New York.
The elusive key to success
Right away, Li discovered that the other-worldly grace of classical Chinese dance doesn’t come as easily as snapping a camera’s shutter. It was painful, “but what did that matter?”

樂觀的心態 到了「飛天」，可欣才瞭解到，舞臺上看似舉重 若輕的曼妙中國古典舞，可不像按按快門那麼簡單。不 過，難又有甚麼關係呢？新西蘭的山海遼闊，也造就了 可欣樂觀豁達的天性，別人都覺得痛苦不堪的兩道坎： 想家和基本功訓練，到了她這裏都不算甚麼大問題。 「來『飛天』之前，我媽媽說我正處在青春叛逆 期，脾氣很不好，經常和她吵。媽媽對我一直要求很嚴 格，可她越是這樣，我就越叛逆。所以來到紐約之後， 我非但不想家，還覺得終於沒人管了，挺高興的。」可 欣這番話讓人有點哭笑不得。事實上，離開父母之後， 獨自在異國它鄉生活，讓可欣迅速成熟起來，連她的父 母都驚異於她的變化。她開始變得懂事，懂得體諒別 人。在這個過程中，她究竟克服了多少生活上的困難、 如何一點點適應了集體的生活，其中經歷的曲折，外人 是很難從她的笑容中讀到的。 「我有時心裏也會急，也會有不開心，但我會克 制自己儘量不發作出來，然後私下裏慢慢說服自己去往 好處想啊！不要太放在心上啊！很快就調整過來了。」 更況且，相比生活上遇到的困難，可欣在舞蹈專業學習 上遭遇的困難要大得多。

she thought. The two hurdles that confront most Fei Tian newcomers — homesickness and the difficult training required to reach top form — didn’t pose a problem for her; something else did. What confounded Li was the fluidity she saw in other dancers and the ability to translate dance combinations into her own body. This eluded her to the point that, one by one, fellow classmates who were secretly sent by her teachers to act as “little tutors” gave up trying to help her. “They were so patient with me, but I just could not get it!” After mulling it over deeply, her visual art training finally took over to solve the problem. “I sat and observed those classmates whose movements are so beautiful. How did they do that? How did they hold themselves? What would they look like in a photo from another angle? If I couldn’t figure it out, I would ask: ‘I saw you doing this move, why did you do it this way? What did you want to convey?’ Then, they would explain it to me step by step. So, I gradually mastered the movements.” With that puzzle unlocked, Li improved faster than most of her peers. Shen Yun management soon noticed her and she was quickly chosen to go on tour with the renowned company. A graceful butterfly was starting to spread her wings.
Stretching out
Now, when the curtain rises, Li is part of the amazing picture. Although she and a dozen fellow dancers “move as if they are one person,” as audience members often describe them, her individuality forms the basis for her inner bearing and her connection to the visual arts constantly adds depth to her performance. “When I was performing the Mongolian Bowl Dance, my father happened to have just returned from a trip to Mongolia. He is also a photography enthusiast, and he took lots of pictures of the country for me to see,” she said. Onstage, in Mongolian costume, the vast country’s scenery appeared in her mind’s eye: herds moving on the endless green steppe, white clouds floating in the azure sky. Her feet seemed to have really stepped onto the soft grassland and she danced with joy in her heart. Such sincere emotions are one of the things audiences say they’re so touched by at Shen Yun performances.

「我之前沒有接受過專業的中國古典舞訓練，所 以總覺得自己不協調，笨笨的，動作學得特別慢。」這 一點，被她嚇跑的一個個「小老師」是最好的證明。原 來，見可欣學得慢，老師就安排了很多同學來幫助她， 許多同學因為實在教不會她動作，紛紛「落荒而逃」。 可欣自己也覺得挺對不住熱心的同學們。「同學真的很 耐心地在教我，可我就是學不會。」後來，還是曾經的 視覺藝術基礎幫可欣走出了困境。 「我就琢磨啊！看那些動作做得好看的同學，她 們為甚麼做得好看啊？那個姿勢是怎麼擺的？在畫面中 的感覺是怎麼樣的？如果搞不懂，我就去問她們，妳做 這個動作，為甚麼要這麼做？妳想表現和傳達甚麼？她 們會一步一步給我講，我就逐漸學會了。」也許是學舞 蹈動作的過程已經夠艱辛，別人眼中最辛苦的基本功訓 練，如壓腿、下腰等，在可欣的眼中反倒不算甚麼了。 「就是天天練，一直堅持下去。我覺得保持一顆 平常心就好，不要把自己的付出和辛苦看得那麼重，樂 觀最重要。」這種樂觀和堅持產生的效果是驚人的，最 後，可欣幾乎成了進步最快的一個學員，早早便入選了 美國神韻藝術團，開始了自己世界巡演的旅程。
美麗的旅程 儘管足跡橫跨歐亞大陸，為全球觀眾奉上了數百 場精彩紛呈的演出，但是可欣說，直到現在，每當演 出的大幕拉開時，她依然抑制不住內心的激動。「『神 韻』的天幕是那麼美，尤其開場的場景都是表現天國世 界的，總能瞬間把我拉入其中，開始忘我地舞蹈。」 她曾經熱愛的繪畫和攝影也在幫助她更加投入進 舞蹈中。「在我跳蒙古頂碗舞時，我的父親恰好剛去了 一趟蒙古，他也是個攝影愛好者，為我拍了許多照片回 來。」當可欣站在舞臺上舞蹈時，眼前彷彿看見了照片 裏的美景，「天蒼蒼，野茫茫，風吹草低見牛羊。」一 望無際的大草原，碧藍的天空中漂浮著朵朵白雲，她的 腳步好像真的踏在了柔軟的草地上，在歡樂地躍動著， 這種真摯的情感隨著動作傳遞出去，感染了所有人。

With every year that goes by, Li’s understanding of classical Chinese dance deepens. She is naturally feminine and sensitive to the point of being quite delicate sometimes, she says, which means she is comfortable in choreography that “demonstrates the ancient Chinese ladies’ charm.” Other times, though, those traits bog her down, such as when she participated in New Tang Dynasty Television’s Fifth International Classical Chinese Dance Competition. She choreographed a piece titled “Admiring Spring’s Beauty” but could hardly bring herself to show it to her teachers, afraid of what they would say about the piece’s imperfections. Her optimism and light-heartedness, which she largely attributes to New Zealand’s culture, eventually triumphed, allowing her to confront her own problems and correct the piece’s shortcomings. Her solo won the second runner-up in the adult female division of the dance competition. When her father once complained about dancing not being a stable job, she explained to him that classical Chinese dance is here to stay. “Classical Chinese dance will spread throughout the entire world in the future,” she told him. “It is the most effective in expressing the [performers’] abundant emotions, narrating the storyline well and portraying the characters. Speaking from an aesthetic point of view, classical Chinese dance’s movements are particularly pleasing and flowing. Every gesture or emotion coming from the dancers toward the audience looks to be in the most comfortable state, which gives the audience endless enjoyment.”

優曇婆羅花

Ancient Buddhist scripture speaks of the divine Udumbara flower, which blossoms but once every three thousand years. Its unfolding portends the arrival of “The Holy King Who Turns The Wheel,” who offers salvation to all the sentient beings. Over the past decade, this flower has been spotted around the world. These bejeweled dancers take inspiration from this auspicious flower in a display of reverent beauty. 「優曇婆羅」為梵語，意為靈瑞。《法華文句》四上：「優曇花者，此言靈 瑞。三千年一現，現則金輪王出。」 《慧琳音義》卷八所說：「優曇花，梵語古譯訛略也。梵語正雲烏曇跋羅， 此雲祥瑞靈異。天花也。世間無此花。若如來下生、金輪王出現世間，以大福德 力故，感得此花出現。」 自 2005 年，此花首現於韓國京畿道龍珠寺及全羅南道須彌山禪院佛像上。 其後在世界各地都有優曇婆羅花盛開的報導。 神韻 2016 年的舞蹈《優曇婆羅花》講的正是這個現象。

onventional knowledge puts the origin of golf in 15th century Scotland. But who were the ones to first come up with this calm, focused, and scenic sport? Looking at ancient Chinese texts and paintings unravels the history of an activity that evolved over hundreds of years and which shares uncanny similarities to the Western pastime.
In the Tang Dynasty (618–907 A.D.), Chinese sportsmen played a strenuous
racing game in which competitors rode horses while dribbling balls across an arena a hundred times the size of a modern soccer field. The sport could only be mastered by the most capable athletes and was eventually simplified to be played on foot. This was especially helpful for court ladies, and their participation in what became known as “chuiwan” or “strike the ball” helped
dramatically to popularize it in later eras. Players used up to ten clubs to strike wooden balls of different sizes. Holes were laid out on courses of varying difficulty. Artwork depicting Chuiwan can be found as late as the Ming Dynasty (1368– 1644). Court painter Shang Xi depicted the Ming emperor Xuanzong playing the sport, while Du Jin painted a scene of “Beautiful Ladies Playing Chuiwan.” Initially, Chuiwan was played in a manner more similar to soccer, wherein players of opposing teams tried to hit the balls into small holes on the field. As the centuries went by, Chuiwan developed into a more golf-like sport, as detailed in the historical

大多數人都以為高爾夫球是一種源於西方國家的運動。殊不知，早在十世紀， 中國宋朝的達官貴人已有打類似高爾夫球的運動，比西方國家早了整整五百年。 《樸通事諺解》中有關於元代大都民俗中「捶丸」的記載：「用有柄木勺接球， 相連不絕，方言謂之球棒。球用木為之，或用瑪瑙，大如雞卵。 」 宋朝人玩的「捶丸」即是現今的高爾夫球，「捶」的意思是「擊」，「丸」 的意思是「球」，玩法是用棍子將球推入地洞，與今日的高爾夫球十分相似。 在宋代繪畫有小兒《蕉陰捶丸圖》；成人亦有捶丸活動，《續夷堅志》:「他 日寒食，元老為友招，擊丸於園西隙地。」最早是用小木棒擊球，可能至元代有 所改變。 宋代時，捶丸已成為由皇帝親自主持的大型遊戲活動。據《宋史•禮志》記載， 每年三月，宋太宗都要親自主持儀式，組織朝廷和藝人們參加捶丸遊戲。 中國元、明兩朝有幾個皇帝沉迷捶丸，收藏於北京故宮博物院的「明宣宗行 樂圖」中便有明宣宗玩捶丸的場面。 明宣宗以皇帝之尊打球，排場自然浩大。宣宗的球桿，一根根立在特製的球 臺上，一旁還有兩人看守。多位可能具有太監身份的「桿弟」，一人捧著一根推桿， 小心翼翼的等候皇帝換桿。 宣宗的私人草皮上共有十個球洞，正如今天高爾夫球場在每個球洞插有旗桿， 圖中每個球洞也各插有不同顏色的彩旗作為提示。 元朝《丸經》一書也記載，最愛捶丸活動的帝王當屬宋徽宗與金章宗。兩人 平日「深求古人之宜制，而益致其精也」。 至於帝王的球桿，則以純金打造緣邊，頂上綴飾玉器，結束球戲後，兩人的 球具不裝在球袋而收藏在錦盒中，所謂「盛以錦囊，擊以彩棒，碾玉綴頂，飾金 緣邊」，現今的名貴球具與之根本無法相比。 捶丸在中世紀（公元 500 年至 1500 年左右）末期由蒙古人帶到歐洲，之後 蘇格蘭。

It was immensely popular during these times and was played by both Chinese and nomadic emperors. Notably, the “Wan Jing” was the first book written in the Yuan Dynasty, when China was ruled by the Mongolian Khans. The “Wan Jing” describes Chuiwan as a sport that, like modern golf, not only emphasized performance but also included a well-developed system of etiquette ultimately for the cultivation of ethical virtues. Contestants were required to maintain sportsmanlike behaviour and speech and to show respect for the elderly. Unlike its Scottish cousin, Chuiwan did not make it to the modern day. The sport’s popularity declined during the Ming Dynasty, allegedly because of the emperor’s weakened interest and physical vitality rather than for a want of open space to play. After the Manchurian tribes conquered China and established the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911), the new imperial rulers took to popularising their own traditions, such as hunting, wrestling, and ice-skating.

陽 (yáng) is a Chinese character associated with what is masculine, positive, and bright. As a noun, it is commonly used in reference to the traditional Chinese theory of yin and yang, where yang ( 陽 ) represents the male or positive energy and yin ( 陰 ) represents the female or negative energy of the natural world. The yin-yang theory, which dates back to ancient times, explains the nature of the universe in terms of these two opposing but complementary and interdependent forces or principles. On the right side of 陽 , the symbol 日 (rì) on the top is the radical/character for sun, and the radical/character 勿 (wù) on the bottom, which means “must not” or “do not,” can be seen to depict the rays of the sun. Thus, the character 陽 (yáng) is also used to refer to the sun or sunshine, as in 太陽 (tài yáng), and sunlight, as in 陽光 (yang guāng). In addition, 陽 stands for the north side of a river and the south side of a hill or mountain. 陰 (yīn) on the other hand, being the opposite (feminine) principle in nature, is used to refer to the moon, as in 太陰 (tài yīn), and to the lunar calendar, 陰曆 (yīn lì). The lunar calendar is also called 農曆 (nóng lì), literally “agricultural calendar”; 舊歷 (jiù lì), “old [old-style] Chinese calendar”; and 夏曆 (xià lì), “summer calendar.” In addition, 陰 describes being cool or shady, as in 陰 涼 (yīn liáng), and the character stands for the south side of a river and the north side of a hill or mountain. During the event, I was surprise by the quality of some of the lesser known producers. Of which I found this “Hutton Vale Farm” are quite amazing. Established in 1843, Hutton Vale Farm is 2000 acres of picturesque countryside in the north eastern hills of Eden Valley. In 1912, Ronald Angas, the owner, planted the famous Mount Edelstone vineyard and was later sold to Henschke. However, He then replanted another vineyard taking cuttings from Mount Edelstone vineyard in the 1960s. He then added Riesling, Grenache, Mataro and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each generation has adapted to the changes of life around them, working hard over the last 170 years to promote and enhance the natural environment of our family farm including wine, lamb, vegetables and artisan chutney. In 2012, the Angas family and Teusner Wines shook hands on a new partnership arrangement, under which the Angases grow the grapes, and Kym Teusner is responsible for the winemaking. When Kym was working at Torbreck in 2001, he was amazed by the quality of the fruits that was produced in Hutton Vale. Unfortunately, the vineyards were badly affected by a grass fire in August 14. 2015 RIESLING The Angas realized the potential for the Eden Valley to be an exceptional region for Riesling, and planted Riesling on gentle slope in the 1960’s. Whilst considered a single vineyard, there are two distinct sections. The top section planted on the leanest soils and more exposed to the wind produces very tightly structured fruit with crisp, vibrant acidity. The bottom section, on deeper, more vigorous red soils produces plumper bunches of fruit that showcases more fresh aromatics and citrus zing. Bright golden colour with lovely vibrant lifted lemon zest and lime cordial intermingled with mineral on the nose. 2012 GRENACHE MATARO There’s a great story about this Grenache vineyard, planted by Colin Angas in the 1960’s. The soil here was so tough that some of the new plantings, probably 10% of the vineyard block, failed to take to their new home and had to be replaced. New cuttings were hastily acquired...which time revealed to be Mataro! That no one ever thought to pull out the plants, which turn out to be a very good partner for the Grenache. Medium dark garnet colour. On the nose there’s plenty of ripe plum, strawberry, charcuterie, licorice, sweet spice and salted dried herbs. 2012 CABERNET SAUVIGNON This Cabernet block is about 5 acres, planted in 1998 on a sloping five acre site where the lean & tough environment dictates low yields – even by Hutton Vale Farm standards...frequently less than a tonne to the acre. The fruit was esteemed and fermented on skins for 6 days in small open fermenters with twice daily pump over, before maturation in an even split of new and seasoned French hogsheads for 24 months. The sheer intensity of this wine is what makes it so very special. On the nose there’s classic blackberry, mint and dark chocolate and touches of polished leather and cigar box. Deep dark Ruby Red Colour.
