A Honeymoon with a Difference by Matthew Murray, Christian journalist
T
hey say you’re never off duty, but as a newly married man I was actually looking forward to doing as little as possible and enjoying a great holiday in the sun. It’s a shame my beautiful new bride didn’t have the same idea… After a perfect wedding back home in Yorkshire, we jetted off to Kenya for the holiday of our lifetime to enjoy a fortnight in Africa. In the midst of the fun and sun was a great three-day safari where we saw some of the world’s most incredible animals in the Kenyan outback. Following our exciting safari venture, a few days resting on the beaches of Mombassa beckoned, or so I thought… My wife is the kind who will cry at an Oxfam advert on TV, so it shouldn’t have come as a huge surprise that we ended up visiting an orphanage as part of our honeymoon. I don’t even remember how the connection came about, but I do recall spending an afternoon with some beautiful African children who were so overjoyed that we took time to visit them. We were able to bless the orphanage with a small donation and have kept communicating with the director ever since. Their beaming faces were of much more value than a few hours topping up the tan! Now to the moral of the story – know how to have a great holiday, but always be ready to answer the call of duty! You might just find the real reason why God blessed you with the holiday in the first place!

After spending most of the year watching what you eat, a holiday is the one time of the year when we can truly indulge without feeling guilty. So go on, order that dessert and enjoy! 4. Reconnecting with family and friends. Our daily lives sometimes make it difficult to spend quality time with our loved ones, but with no work distractions, a holiday is the perfect time to reconnect with the ones you love. It is also the perfect time to reconnect with God. We in the West are blessed with the finances to travel God’s earth so next time you’re admiring that beautiful sunset, remember just how blessed we are.

olidays offer rest and relaxation for tired bodies, but there’s an opportunity to get so much more than that out of your holiday. Christian conferences are the perfect way to combine your season of rest with a little spiritual input. I grew up attending conferences annually and every year, friends from far away would gather together for fun and fellowship. I remember vividly playing in goal and stopping everything the opposing team threw at me… and they were the youth leaders! Attending a conference can supercharge our faith, as we join with thousands of believers to sing God’s praises. It’s a fantastic feeling, being in the large meetings at these events, surrounded by believers who are solely there to worship. Something about this common purpose and hunger for God seems to ensure that unforgettable times are spent in God’s presence. All in all, Christian conferences provide a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of life, but more than that, they build you up and help you draw closer to God.
