What makes a holiday great?
T
he Great British Holiday – whether it’s home or abroad, we Brits spend most of the year looking forward to that week or two when we take time out of our busy lives to relax and unwind. So what exactly is it that makes a holiday so great? The sun. We all dream of sunnier climes, where the sun just makes everything seem better. Relaxing under those warm rays helps us to unwind in ways that the dreary, rainy skies just can’t compete with. This got me to thinking – if the sun makes us feel this way, how much more should the son of God have an affect on us? Just something to ponder while you’re lounging on that sunbed at the side of the pool… Rest. So many of us get worn down by the daily grind and it’s the thought of a restful holiday that keeps us going. Even the God of all creation
rested on the seventh day, so don’t feel guilty and enjoy the peace that a holiday brings. Food. After spending most of the year watching what you eat, a holiday is the one time of the year when we can truly indulge without feeling guilty. So go on, order that dessert and enjoy! Reconnecting with family and friends. Our daily lives sometimes make it difficult to spend quality times with our loved ones, but with no work distractions, a holiday is the perfect time to reconnect with the ones you love. It is also the perfect time to reconnect with God. We in the West are blessed with the finances to travel God’s earth so next time you’re admiring that beautiful sunset, remember just how blessed we are.

Here are just three reasons that should hopefully inspire you to book something for 2013. Spiritual refreshment When was the last time you spent a prolonged amount of time in the presence of God – without any distractions? There is nothing quite like being able to sit and listen, and know you haven’t got to think about closing a deal at work or preparing the next meal! Sitting at the feet of keynote speakers allows faith to grow – because remember, ‘faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God’, (Romans 10:17) but also, conferences give you the time and opportunity to meditate and reflect on all that you’ve heard. It’s the difference between a quick shower – which we so often grab on a Sunday morning – and a long luxurious soak in a bubble bath! You’ll come away renewed, energised and refreshed – and preferably not wrinkled,
Food, fellowship and fun When you attend the same place of worship every Sunday, sometimes a conference is the only time you can catch up with friends from other churches. It’s great being able to grab time with old friends – and new ones – over coffee or lunch breaks. Many conferences offer afternoons off where the ladies can hit the shops and the guys can have a kickabout. The travelling Dickie Bird
H
e’s travelled the world, visiting exotic places such as India, South Africa and Barbados, but Dickie Bird has revealed his favourite holiday destination – Scarborough.
The retired cricket umpire visits the East Yorkshire town every year. The devout Christian says: “Don’t let anybody kid you, England is the best nation in the world and Yorkshire is God’s country! We have got everything here, except the climate. “I love going to Scarborough on the East Coast, I don’t think there’s anywhere
nicer in the world. I love New Zealand and the Cape Peninsula in South Africa and it’s always been nice to visit the West Indies and India and Pakistan. scenery “But you can’t beat Scarborough. The people there are wonderful and I love the scenery. I always
stay in the Crown Hotel, and my favourite place to eat in the world is The Tuscany, in Scarborough. “I try and get there every year and combine it with watching some cricket. There’s nowhere else I’d rather go.” Bird, who lives in Barnsley, celebrates his 80th birthday this year. He played cricket for Yorkshire and Leicestershire before becoming the world’s most famous umpire. He officiated in 66 test matches and 69 one day internationals.

Praying can help when you’re looking for your ‘special one’
A
marriage expert has told how he met his wife at a Christian holiday camp. Paul Finn, who runs Southampton Christian Fellowship, married Janice two years later. He said single Christians needed to be practical when searching for their long-term partner
and shouldn’t rule out attending camps and conferences when on the lookout for that special someone. “We shouldn’t be hermits, and I’d encourage young people to get to youth conferences and mix with other young people and get to know them. Being single can be a painful journey, and it’s
not easy for Christians when all their friends are falling in love and getting married. “But if they trust in God and his promises then God will give them the desires of their heart. “Janice and I got to know each other at a Christian holiday camp in Scarborough in Yorkshire. After
about two months we knew we were right for each other and two years later got married. We both had ambitions of serving God full-time so naturally saw it right that we should be together.” Paul says he counsels many young people at church who are searching for the ‘right one’, and advises singles to put their requests before God. He adds: “I tell people to write down what they want in a partner and to write down their criteria. They then can name them before God and seek him on the matter. The Bible says to commit your ways to the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. “If we name situations before God and cling onto his promises then he is sure to answer our needs.” Paul holds regular marriage courses at his church in Southampton, and he holds several weekend trips a year for soonto-be married couples, as well as married couples.

Don’t let tots stop you travelling
F
ew people look forward to flights, especia l ly long ones. That awful odour of the air conditioning, the mediocre food, the odd passenger whose had one too many glasses of sherry and then, the worst thing of all… the screaming baby! As we wa l k dow n the a isle look ing for our seat and hear the noisy infant, even the God doubters amongst us must utter a silent prayer hoping they will be seated as far as possible from the little creature in question. There’s nothing worse than having your holiday hijacked by some selfish baby who has the audacity to wreck hundreds of lives by deciding to announce their presence to the entire carriage in a very vocal way. And the parents – if that’s what you can call them – well, how disgraceful of them not to have better control over their unruly offspring. They were my s e nt i me nt s e x a c t l y, until something rather bi za r re happened in July 2011 – I became a father! C r y i ng aer opl a ne b abie s e volve d i nt o adorable infants and a sudden compassion came

As I began to mix in parenting circles, frustrating phrases like, ‘Well, we couldn’t take our Johnny on a flight at his age,’ and, ‘Let’s wait while she’s older then we’ll go,’ became all too common. My wife and I enjoy travelling, and, as a young man in my mid twenties, I’m in no mood for settling down with my slippers and abandoning my overseas dreams. So last summer, we decided to do the unthinkable
and book a f light for t h re e – to A mer ic a. Our route included a nine-hour f light from Manchester to Atlanta followed by a one-hour internal journey to our f i n a l dest i n at ion i n Ohio. Suddenly, the boot was on the other foot. I ’d g o n e f r o m b a d mannered bystander to embarrassed parent. It was terribly scary as we packed the suitcases, not forgett ing the nappies and baby food, and jetted off on our jollies. But you know
what, it wasn’t that bad at all. Did the baby cry? Of course he did! But we fed him and cuddled him and he managed to sleep for most of it anyway, causing us and those around us little trouble. The flight attendants were great, allowing us to take our pram right to the door of the plane and were always on hand to dish out extra supplies of baby food.So my final thought is this: if you want to go on holiday, then go! And don’t let the little one stop you!

A SMALL group of dedicated volunteers at a Kent church has raised a whopping £140,000 for char ity. charEight members of West Malling Baptist Church have generated the cash for Christian development organisation Rope through a series of fundraising events and appeals during the last seven years. Their efforts have so far helped disabled children in South Africa, low-income families in Pakistan, provided educational training for prostitutes Democratic Republic of Congo and assisted in the alcoholalcohol ics in Bolivia. The group’s co-ordinator John Gledhill, a retired police officer, said: “In 2012 we set out to raise £16,000 but we raised almost £50,000. We do what we can do and then God sends the money in.
