from the editor Christianity is in decline and God is dead. It’s funny just how many people have been fooled by those two ‘truths’ which we’re continually bombarded with. That’s certainly not what I believe. Faith in the UK still forms a massive part of our collective and social life – and Christianity is still far and away the most practised and relevant faith in the nation. For all the loud shouting of Mr Richard Dawkins and his neo-atheist friends, they still only speak for 15 per cent of the population – you could argue they’re shouting ‘Worldwide, a lot louder than they Christianity should be. At the last census, is the fastest 70 per cent of Brits claimed Christianity growing as their faith – when religion and it was just as easy to is increasing declare themselves to be non-religious. Not much faster so dead, then. And worldwide Christianity than the is the fastest growing population’ religion and it’s increasing much faster than the population is – we’re gaining ground, not losing it. It certainly is the case that the UK is facing some tough times with atheist views being given much more air time than they deserve, but the fact is that an atheistic worldview is dissatisfying for one very simple reason – because it’s wrong. This issue sees the launch of a great new series for everyone who believes, and for those who would like to. Beyond Reasonable Doubt will tackle the many issues that all thinking people have and will demonstrate step by step just how faith makes sense. Plus, we have lots of great stories in this month’s issue that prove that God is still on the move and is changing people’s lives in Britain today. I’m glad I’m a believer!

Interview

Mark played John in the summer movie hit Ted

Mark during his days as a rapper, when he was known as Marky Mark

The bad boy image of Mark Wahlberg on screen is close to his early life. But the star of the recent hit movie Ted has become a real family man after turning to God

F

irst impressions can make a serious impact. With Mark Wahlberg, you’re looking at Hollywood’s favourite hard man who’s got the muscles to go with the role he plays on and off the screen. But the rapper turned actor – formerly known as Marky Mark – had a pretty hectic journey to reach the stardom he enjoys today. The bruiser from Boston might have found his way to fame via raucous rap and kick-ass action, but you’d be wrong to assume he’s all brawn and no brain. A renowned research junkie who immerses himself into the parts that he plays, Mark is a straight-talker and is as bright a box-office attraction as you could hope to meet. But it all began so differently. Mark, now 41, was the youngest of nine children and was only ten when his father left home. After this devastating departure, Mark became a troublemaker. Living in abject poverty in the Dorchester neighbourhood of Boston, he started experimenting with drugs and had a serious cocaine habit by the age of 13. Crime came naturally to him and street fighting and stealing cars escalated to drug dealing and robbery. Eventually, he was sentenced to serve time. “There was always a voice in my head telling me I was going to end up in jail,”

he says. “Three of my brothers had done time and my sister went to prison so many times I lost count. “Finally, I was there, locked up with the kind of guys I’d always wanted to be like. Now I’d earned my stripes and I was just like them and I realised it wasn’t what I wanted at all. I’d ended up in the worst place I could possibly imagine and I never wanted to go back. First of all I had to learn to stay on the straight and narrow.” And that’s where Christianity kicked in. Mark’s local priest, James Flavin, met the young troublemaker at 2am one morning when Mark was dealing drugs. “He was the one person who never gave up on me,” says Mark. “He was always there for me, through the good times and the bad. Back then there were more bad times than good. But he always had faith that I could change my ways. “He was the first to recognise the actor in me. Looking back I was always acting. Whether I was pulling a scam or trying to convince a judge the scam had nothing to do with me, it was all acting. I could convince my mother of anything. Even when I’d admit to something she’d say, ‘No, it must have been someone else.’ To this day my mother blames everything on anyone but me.” He might have been acting to fool his mother, but Mark’s not one to shirk

Interview YolanDa Brown: “It’s really great that I can still have my faith and share about God through my music.”

YolanDa in Jools Holland’s Rythm and Blues Orchestra

She’s saxy and she knows it… iBelieve speaks to one of music’s rawest talents – British saxophonist YolanDa Brown

‘I don’t blow my own trumpet!’ M

eet YolanDa Brown, the singer with sax appeal. The 29-year-old musician has already won two MOBO awards, had a number one on iTunes and shared the stage with the genius of jazz, Jools Holland. Not only that, but her regular sell-out shows earned her an invitation to meet Her Majesty and a handful of presidents too. Not bad for a self-taught saxophonist! If you expected YolanDa to be a little bit full of the hot air that seems to come 10

with fame, you’d be wrong. Never one to believe her own hype, the string of accolades her music has earned her sit lightly on the shoulders of this cockney lass. Actually, in spite of the fact that her CV’s got more glitter than your average disco ball, she believes that it’s God who’s taken her to the top of the tree in the music industry. “Throughout my career, it’s been a walk of faith,” she says. “It’s a true blessing to be a Christian and have a personal relationship with God. The fundamental

tool that this relationship and faith has given me is the security in knowing who I am, no matter where I am or who I meet. “It is important to be secure in your values. With this knowledge, I have not really felt any tensions or temptations because I know I am where God wants me to be.” YolanDa recently saw her debut album ‘April Showers May Flowers’ go straight to number one on iTunes, in spite of the fact that she’s not on a major label. But limitation and YolanDa have never really

Gine-ius!

Aubergine Parmigiana Bringing together the beautiful flavours of aubergine, pepper and tomato, why not make the most of the late rays this September and dine al fresco with our delicious Italian dish for four. 2 large aubergines 2 garlic cloves, crushed 350ml passata 200g pimento peppers 1 tsp dried mixed herbs 50g grated Parmesan 125g mozzarella, drained and sliced

Begin by slicing up your aubergines into 1cm thick slices and stick them under the grill for a few minutes. Turn them once, and make sure that they’ve gone a little brown and soft. Make the sauce. Heat a little oil in a pan and fry the garlic for one minute before adding the peppers, passata and herbs to the mixture. Bring the mixture to the boil and give it a few minutes once it’s there. While you’re grilling and frying the ingredients, you can pre-heat your oven

to 220°C or 200°C on a fan assisted model. That’s gas mark 7. Now it’s time to bake. Put a third of the grilled aubergine slices into a large ovenproof dish and spoon over about a third of the hot passata mixture and spread evenly. Sprinkle some Parmesan cheese onto the layer and repeat to form two more layers, finishing with a layer of passata. Sprinkle the remaining Parmesan over the sauce and arrange the slices of mozzarella on top. Bake for 15 minutes until it’s all golden and melted and serve at once with a green salad and some tasty \ focaccia bread! iBelieve
