KISSAGRAM SHOCKED CHURCH

I KISSED A PREACHER LIP SERVICE... Lynda Heron was a kissagram when she first went to church to spring a surprise on the minister. Now she’s the wife of a pastor

...and now I’m a pastor’s wife A PASTOR’S wife has revealed how her first experience of church was when she surprised the preacher in her job – as a kissagram! Blonde Lynda Heron walked on stage in suspenders and high heels before being ushered off by red-faced church members and being thrown outside. “People say to me, ‘You’re the one who kissed the preacher.’ I answer, ‘Yes, and I’m still kissing preachers today because now I’m married to one!’” she laughs. A young Lynda worked as a kissagram in the pubs and clubs in her hometown of Blackpool. One day the call came for her to go to a church.

Then her moment came. “I smiled and had my bright red lipstick ready to give him a kiss,” she said. “As I got closer I whipped off my coat and stood there in my fishnet stockings, high heeled shoes and suspenders and I planted this big red one on his face.

MUSIC LEGEND FINDS JOY IN FAITH Kissagram girl is wife of minister NEW LIFE

It’s the tracks of my cheers! HE’S probably had more hit songs than any other popular singer from the last 50 years.

Classics such as Tears Of A Clown and The Tracks Of My Tears are just two of Smokey Robinson’s chart-toppers still played on radio stations all over the world. But when he was asked to choose a song for the famous Motown Comes Home a lbu m a longside Stevie Wonder and The Temptations, Smokey opted for a favourite gospel track – I’ll Keep My Light In My Window. “In case someone doesn’t get the title, let me spell it out for them,” he said. “The light is Jesus. I want Jesus’ light to always shine on me, to illuminate everything that I do.” Only ardent quiz fans will know that William Robinson is one of the music world’s giants. The rest of us know him better as Smokey. So how did he come to get that name? “I loved cowboys. My Uncle Claude used to take me to see cowboy movies. He had a cowboy name for me, which was ‘Smokey Joe’. So whenever anybody asked me what my name was, I told ’em it was Smokey Joe.” There doesn’t seem to be a time when Smokey was not singing or composing songs. Growing up in Detroit, music was everywhere. Little wonder that his first millionseller, Shop Around, came shortly after leaving high school. If the world was watching this new young singer, he felt someone else was also looking after him. “Since I was a little bitty boy, I’ve always felt like God was watching me, and I don’t know why. I guess because he was,” explained Smokey. “I hadn’t done any drugs or anything like that. I’m watching TV, and I hear a voice say to me, ‘Smokey, I want you to know more about me. I want you to know my Son, and I want you to tell your friends.’ “Now I know that one of my

The charity hopes to be able to help increase the number of believers who are due to make their way to Wembley Stadium on September 29 for the event. Samaritan’s Purse UK’s executive director Simon Barrington said: “We’ll be coming together to pray for some of the neediest children around the globe, including orphans and those in poverty.”

I’m astounded by what has just happened to me, and I never tell a soul.” Smokey sta rted attend i ng a Bible group and then gave his life to Jesus. “The one thing about God that’s so beautiful is he is omnipotent and he is the Almighty. But he’s not a dictator. So I figured I knew what I was doing, so he let me figure that.” As the h its followed, so did Smokey ’s plu nge i nto a d r ugf uel led l i fest yle. He reg u la rly smoked weed, and cocaine became a favourite. When asked how he got himself out of that downward spiral, he insisted: “I didn’t – God did. I had gone down to my last legs. I was stepping off a cliff. I let myself deteriorate, so a friend of mine took me to a service where I was prayed for. “I went in an addict, and when I came out, I was free. That was in May of 1986, and the only time when I even associate myself with drugs now is when I speak against them.” Today, after decades at the top, Smokey, 72, has combined his love for Jesus with his musical talent to produce his first ever gospel album, Food For The Spirit. “I don’t really call it gospel, more inspirational,” he said. “I really haven’t strayed too far, musically, from my roots. “What you’ll find on the album isn’t too different from what I’ve done ove r t he yea rs on ot he r projects. “I’ve a lways w r it te n gospe l songs. I had been stockpiling them for other a rtists, but the Lord impressed on me that these were songs that I needed to sing myself. I needed to let it really be known where I stand.”

WISE WORDS... Cliff Richard

● Continued from Page 1 23 she was a divorced, single mum and a heavy user of recreational drugs. Then one day, a new boyfriend, Jason, invited her to church. “Every day he talked about this guy named Jesus and how he loved me,” she added. “Finally, I snapped and agreed to go to church if he never talked about Jesus again.” Lynda was in for the shock of her life. “I clon ked dow n the a isle i n my high heels – Jason pulling me forward,” she said. “But no one was looking at me. They were all worshipping God.

peace “We sat down and the man started to talk – and it was about me, how I felt inside and things from my past. Then the preacher said, ‘Does anyone want Jesus in their lives?’ I jumped off that seat like there was fire underneath it. “I felt love going from the top of my head, all down my body and someone lifting a weight off my shoulders. It was peace – something that has stayed with me from that day.” Lynda and Jason got married, left their old lives behind and went to Bible College where they became trained ministers. They now lead the Elim Church in Northampton.

FAITH... Jane Fonda

Jane’s Fonda Jesus Christ!

Cliff urges fans on faith MUSIC legend Sir Cliff Richard has urged his fans to turn to Christ. Sq uea k y c lea n C l i ff, who turns 72 next month, has been a committed Christian since finding God early in his pop career. He said: “Life is not long. If God is real, think what you miss if you haven’t checked him out. If you are going to reject him, at least reject something you have checked out. I have

more respect for someone like that, but most people just totter through life without even thinking about it. “When we look we find the only way God can help us is through Jesus, and that takes you on your knees, or standing somewhere or even in the supermarket or your bedroom – it doesn’t matter – and you say, ‘Jesus, I believe you exist, please come into my life.’”

ACTRESS Jane Fonda has told how God became real to her. The face of L’Oreal became a Christian about 15 years ago when her marriage to Ted Turner broke down. She said: “My faith is a work in progress, as am I. Lots of folks go to church every Sunday and spend the rest of their time avoiding dealing with the question of consciousness. They try to pass time with pastimes, possessions and prestige. “They think about God and talk about their religious beliefs but avoid experiencing the Spirit. “Th i n k i ng a nd e x pe r ie nc i ng aren’t the same. That is what Jesus meant when he said that God is within us. That is what I am seeking, and I have found that since I have come to feel God within me, I experience less fear.”

Speaking out

FORMER Prime Minister Tony Blair has insisted that Christians should not be afraid to speak in public about faith - even though he was once instructed not to “do God”. Speaking at a debate in London, Mr Blair spoke openly about his belief in “salvation through Jesus Christ”.

MISSIONARY PRAYED AS ARMED MEN SWOOPED

God saved us both from gunmen terror A MISSIONARY worker who was threatened by gunmen in Honduras believes God saved her life.

Midwife Leonie Webster and her adopted son Joshua prayed for their lives when armed men scaled the roof of her remote mountain home in the middle of the night. With nowhere to hide, Leonie, 39, cried out to God and he answered – with a power cut – which meant the men couldn’t see their targets. She said: “It was horrifically scary. I just started to pray then the lights went out. I know it’s a miracle that we’re alive today.” Recalling the night of the attack in June, Leonie said: “We heard two men in the garden and another on the roof. By this time, Joshua had woken up and was beside me. Then I saw the red laser beam shining through my bathroom window. I knew it was the viewfinder from a high-calibre weapon. “My heart was pounding and I kept thinking where I could hide Joshua because it was only a matter of time before they shot me and I was dead.” With her child beside her, Leonie tried not to show any fear. “The mid-

wife in me kicked in and I stopped panicking. I just prayed for God to help us,” she said. At that moment, the village was hit by a power cut and the gunmen were plunged into darkness, unable to see inside of the house to find their target. They left shortly afterwards. Leonie added: “We could hear their footsteps and muttering and then they gave up.” Leonie, of Hull, East Yorkshire, had spent seven years driving through changes in adoption law in Honduras and challenging authorities over conditions in orphanages in the poverty-stricken country. She moved to Latin America and set up Christian charity Heart 4 Honduras, supported by New Life Church in Hull, in 2005 after working as a medical intern at an orphanage in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. She met Joshua when he arrived at the Hope Centre orphanage. Joshua, then just 20 months old, had been found in his cot and was close to death after enduring three days without food or water. She then decided to take care of him. After her ordeal, Leonie has moved back to Britain, but is planning to relocate to America.

Nun better on Twitter! A NUN has joined Twitter – and already has more than 1,000 followers. Sister Elizabeth Pio uses the social networking site on behalf of the Sisters of Bethany, an Anglican religious order in Southsea near Portsmouth. The 41-year-old has devoted her life to prayer, hospitality and helping others. And one way of doing that is to tweet about God. Sister Elizabeth posts messages every day and has about 1,300 followers. She said: “We believe it’s a way of fulfilling the commandment to love God and love each other – we can express love for God on Twitter and we try to help others to discover him.”

MORE than 100,000 people watched a Christian conference online – five times more than at the event. The Hillsong Conference in Sydney, Australia, was broadcast throughout the world via Hillsong’s website and new iPhone app. A spokesman said: “Many people can’t afford to come to Australia, but the technology enabled them to experience the sense of worship.”

Elvis Presley Gospel Tribute Act!

Andy Kelso’s great passion is to reach people for Jesus! Sadly so many people are put off church but God has been using Andy’s Elvis Presley Gospel Tribute Act to connect with people. If you’re a church with a heart for your community then why not invite Andy along. Many churches book a local hall or club or pub function room and Andy will provide the entertainment. People will have a great time but also get some food for thought! Andy combines the best of Elvis: rock, ballad and Gospel, and weaves in some stories of Elvis’s spiritual journey along with his own. It makes for an amazing evening!

There is always a church near you. Why not visit a church this Sunday?

Did you once live for Jesus but got into sin and are away from God? Or maybe you’ve known about Jesus, but have never had a personal relationship with Him. Whatever the case; no matter what you’ve done, It’s not too late to get right with God and come home. Your heavenly father is ready to welcome you with arms wide open. From your heart pray the following prayer: “Dear Jesus thank you for your love. Thank you for your mercy. Thank you for not leaving me alone. I know I have sinned I have messed up, I have done wrong, I have hurt others I have hurt you, I have hurt myself. I’m sorry. Forgive me, Jesus. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sin. Wash me, cleanse me, help me, and make me new. This day I give you my life. Come into my heart. Be my Saviour. Be my Lord and my very best friend. From this moment forward I give you complete control of my life. Iam yours and You are mine come live your life through me. In Jesus Name Amen. www.prodigalsonly.com www.churchonthestreet.org

VILLA STAR SAYS BELIEFS GAVE HIM PEACE AFTER SNUB IN EURO FINALS by Matthew Murray

ENGLAND striker Darren Bent says that God helped him get over last season’s injury heartache and his Euro snub. The Aston Villa goal poacher was overlooked by Rod Hodgson for this summer’s European Championships after he missed the last three months of the 2011-2012 campaign through an ankle injury. Bent, 28, revealed that his

Christian beliefs kept him going. He told Aston Villa’s club website: “I’ve been through some hard times here at Villa and at Spurs and missing out on major tournaments with England too. “It has been difficult, but I’m a believer that good things come to those who wait and I believe if I am patient and I have faith then more good things will happen to me in my life and in my career.”
