AFor a more rigid bonding solution, we recommend Sikadur AP. This easy to mix and apply adhesive paste is used for general bonding and patching. Best used on bricks, concrete, wood, ceramics, and metal. It can be applied to damp surfaces and is ideal for vertical and overhead applications. Sikadur AP can be smoothed off with water and has a convenient 1 to 1 mixing ratio.

HOW TO USE THE PRODUCT: PREPARATION AND PRIMING

• Sound, clean, free from oil and grease, old coatings and surface treatments, etc. Concrete, mortar, stone should be prepared by high pressure water jetting or mechanical means (grinding, chiselling etc)

• Proportion equal amounts by volume of both components into a suitable, clean mixing container. Depending on the volume, mix thoroughly using a large spatula or a slow speed drill (set at 400-600rpm) with a clean, rust free, mixing paddle until the two components are evenly blended to a uniform colour (minimum three minutes).

• Use immediately

• From here onwards, if you could perhaps just add the below headline and the paragraph, then just add the images only without the description of their use.

Seven tips for

solar pv rooftop installation safety

South Africa’s rapid rooftop solar adoption, with households and businesses installing over 5 400MW in just a year, has eased pressure on the national grid 5 400MW leading to the longest load shedding break since January 2022. However, this surge has raised safety concerns, with firefighters reporting that one in six fires they respond to daily involves solar installations.

Solar revolution is a bright spot, but a hidden fire risk lurks behind the panels. Dr Andrew Dickson, engineering executive at CBI-electric: low voltage, explains the culprits behind these fires: substandard installations, ground faults, arcing, lack of maintenance, and debris from the environment such as dust, leaves and dirt. Retailers can provide advice and tips shared by Dickson with their customers that are considering making the switch from the grid to solar. Customers must do their due diligence to ensure the safety of their rooftop solar installations.

HERE ARE SEVEN TIPS FOR SAFE INSTALLATIONS:

1

Avoid ‘fly-by-night’ installers: You might have seen the TV ads warning against the use of substandard installers. They’re spot-on. The Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO) has seen a rise in complaints about solar system

installations, particularly poor workmanship and installations that do not meet safety standards. Always choose certified and experienced installers who follow industry best practices as well as safety regulations and standards. Crucially, ensure they provide a Certificate of Compliance – a must for insurance and warranty purposes.

2

Don’t be fooled by fakes: With the solar boom comes a rise in counterfeit panels and equipment that pose safety risks. These products don’t meet

safety regulations and can malfunction. Insist that your installer uses only high-quality components from reputable manufacturers that come with certification documents for a safe and reliable system. Remember: if the price is too good to be true, it probably is.

3

Safeguard your investment:

Spikes in voltage from lightning or other electrical disturbances can damage your inverter and batteries. Ensure that surge protection devices (SPDs) are installed and that periodic inspections are conducted to make sure they are in proper working order. Most warranties do not cover damage from these incidents if protection has not been installed.

4

Avoid arc fault risks:

Solar PV systems operate using direct current (DC), which carries a high risk of damage if arcing occurs. Arcing is an intense burst of light and heat caused by

FEATURE

a continuous flow of electricity jumping a gap between two points where a potential difference (voltage) exists. This is the cause of over 40% of fires in these systems. Worn wires, loose connections, and degraded insulation can all trigger arcing. Invest in DC circuit breakers designed for solar systems as they can minimise the impact of arcing by interrupting the circuit in a timeous manner. Alternating current (AC) circuit breakers are not suitable in DC applications. When choosing the right circuit breaker, remember they need to be certified for the correct operating characteristics of the installation and should not be influenced by environmental temperature changes to ensure that the protection levels are maintained.

5

Maintenance is the magic word: Make a habit of visually inspecting

your panels monthly for cracks, corrosion, or debris buildup. Ensure that conductors are checked for insulation fatigue and corrosion and that connections are tight. Every five years, schedule a professional inspection by a qualified technician to make sure that everything is functioning properly and to spot any potential problems.

6

Keep it clean:

Rain helps with cleaning, but dust and grime can build up. Clean your panels with a gentle spray from a hose and soft brush. This is critical as research has found that soiling lowers solar efficiency, raises maintenance expenses, and reduces the lifespan of PV systems. Aim for cooler mornings or evenings to avoid shocking the panels with a sudden temperature change. For stubborn dirt or depending on your environment, consider professional cleaning every one to two years.

7

Stay watchful:

Most solar power systems come with monitoring capabilities to track performance. Keep an eye on this data for any unusual drops in efficiency. This could be a sign of a dirty panel, an inverter issue, aging components requiring closer inspection or something else needing attention. Monitoring is a must for warding off any potential catastrophes.

By following these steps, Dickson says customers can ensure a safe and efficient system. Remember, while going off-grid already has a high price tag of between R150 000 and R350 000, skimping on safety can cost significantly more. With unsafe installations, you run the risk of property damage, injury, or even death. Invest in proper safety measures – it’s the smartest decision for your wallet and your well-being.

noticeable deflation in paint, but industry remains steady

The June issue of DIY & Industrial Trade News showcased an analysis of retail inflation in the South African paint department and their different segments spanning from March 2023 to March 2024. In this instalment of our series, Aquidneck provides an analysis of the overall performance index of the paint department and their different segments spanning from April 2023 to April 2024.

Aquidneck’s findings will be featured in a series of articles by DIY and Industrial Trade News, offering monthly updates across various hardware categories.

In a 12-month period, the price trends for different segments of the paint department have shown various changes. An overall decrease and deflation in the department. Although some segments have indicated slight declines and others having experienced steadiness in purchase, it should be noted that last month’s were above average. This being the case, it is safe to conclude that the paint department remains steady despite deflation in certain areas.

The average price point for the whole paint department declined marginally in April to -R232, or -3,4% YoY. The main driver behind this deflation trend is paint which shrunk to -R405, although it must be highlighted that last month’ value was well above the average. Furthermore, brush ware declined price wise by -4,7% down to -R62, due to the negative price impact of tray sets. The other major segments within the paint department are relatively stable with just a minor negative edge.

While overall spray paint is relatively price stable retailing on average between R120<R130 per item the smaller segments can be volatile. The largest bracket is 250ML common in the budget segment with an average price in April of -R94. The larger 300ML segment retailed in April also at -R94, although in general terms this capacity is usually closer to the -R100, mark. The smaller 312ML tier is popular with functional and exotic sprays which results in a higher price position a -R218, in April. The larger 340ML capacity is a wild mix of products resulting in a high price volatility, -R175, in April well below the average around -R200.

Spray paint can be described as a stand-alone segment within the greater paint category, by itself it contributes 3% of the average value generation each month. Around 84% of the sales originate from products whose primary function is the colour while around 16% are generated by products with additional function beyond the colour (eg rust protection). Within the non-function sub-groups 78% of the sales from Jan-Apr 24 come from standard colours followed by metallic colours (10%) and appliance colours (4%) leaving 8% for all other variants. Within the segment with additional functions primer generate 33% of the value contribution, rust protection 24%, high heat resistance 17% and galvanising sprays 16% leaving 10% for other variants.

INDUSTRIAL COATINGS

High performance industrial coatings range specifically engineered for African climate

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

To keep sprays consistent with the rest of paint category the capacity is measured in ML instead of G. In the YTD 54% of the sales originated from the 250ML bracket with the most common price points at 79% found in the price band between R75<R100. The second most popular size is 340ML at 30% of the sales which generates 62% of its performance between R150<R175. Functional spray usually commands higher price points with rust protection retailing mostly above R200 and high heat sprays selling between R125<R300 well above the common price points of colour only sprays.

From a hue perspective within the standard colours segment black is the most popular option at 28% followed by white at 20% and then spray paint offer a huge variety of individual colours making a deep range imperative to retailers. High heat is mostly black at 81% followed by silver at 12% which makes sense considering the intended use. Rust protection, on the other hand, requires a wider range of colours.

Rust-Oleum focuses on premium products with a very deep product range encompassing almost 20 different product families. The most popular being Painter’s Touch which in April represented 59% of the sales share of the brand in value terms followed by Stops Rusts at 14%. Thereafter the share contribution by the individual product families drops into the single digits. From a capacity perspective Rust-Oleum offers a variety of capacities with 340ML being the most common at 87% followed by 312ML at 9% in April.

Spraymate is the budget offering from Rust-Oleum with a focus on the price bands between R75 and R125 mostly in the 250ML capacity. Fast Drying is Spraymate’s most popular product family generating around 64% of the value contribution followed by their metallic variants at 15% share. Other segments include dedicated engine enamel, heat resistant and fluorescent paints, all of them generating value for the brand in the lower single digits. One exception are primer sprays which provide 8% to the total turnover on average.

Guarding woodwork against winter –essential tips for homeowners

Winter weather creates some special challenges for the beautiful woodwork in and around your home. Dry Highveld and inland conditions can cause warping and cracking due to extreme moisture loss, the Western Cape’s abundant winter rains create an ideal environment for swelling and wood rot, while KwaZulu-Natal enjoys a unique blend of these conditions.

Well-cared-for woodwork, both indoor and out, is a joy to behold and assures the value of your home, while the opposite is true for dirty, weathered, and neglected wood.

TO ENSURE THAT INTERIOR WOOD REMAINS IN TOP CONDITION, WE RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING MAINTENANCE:

Dust your furniture well and regularly. Dusting and maintenance can be done in one action by wiping the wood with a soft cloth, lightly moistened with Woodoc Interior Maintenance Wax.

Never use water for cleaning. If you need to clean the wood, use Woodoc Interior Maintenance Wax on a soft cloth. To remove any wax- or oil build-up, use mineral turpentine on a soft cloth. Wooden floors need extra care. To prevent scratching, stick felt wads under the feet of furniture that will be moved regularly. Insist that chairs be lifted if moved and not dragged across the floor.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 // Well cared for woodwork, both indoor and out is a joy to behold and assures the value of a home //

Regular light applications of a highquality wax like Woodoc Interior Maintenance Wax or Woodoc Antique Wax will keep the wood in top form.

Take care not to allow mud and grit to be carried into the house. Feet should be wiped before entry. Any mud should be cleaned off the wooden floor before it is ground into the wood. Use a soft broom and sweep wooden floors regularly. Never wash a wooden

floor with water and soap. The soap will dull the finish and water ingress between the floor planks may cause warping. If the floor needs cleaning, one-part white vinegar in ten parts of luke-warm water may be sparingly used to gently mop the floor. Make sure to wring out the mop before cleaning the floor. Dry the floor as soon as possible after mopping. Apply a high-quality pure wax like Woodoc Antique Wax from time to time and buff the floor gently.

Exterior wood requires some TLC to recover after the winter. As soon as the first signs of spring appear, have a good, critical look at the condition of your exterior wood. If you see any sign of weathering, you should immediately start with maintenance.

REGULAR MAINTENANCE IS THE KEY TO LOW-IMPACT, COST-EFFECTIVE CARE:

Wood showing signs of weathering and not treated with a Woodoc Exterior Sealer previously, should be sanded down to bare wood before re-sealing. Woodoc Exterior Sealers are formulated to bio-degrade and disappear from wood at the end of their life cycle, so if the wood was sealed with a Woodoc Solvent-Based Sealer, a light but thorough clean with steel wool and mineral turpentine will be sufficient. If a Woodoc Water-Borne Exterior Sealer was used, light sanding will be required.

Replace any wood that shows signs of rotting.

Seal the wood by applying three liberal coats of the Woodoc Exterior Sealer of your choice. Please follow the application instructions carefully. Woodoc Exterior Maintenance Wax may be applied from time to time as a maintenance treatment to exterior wood.

For information on Woodoc Products, please visit www.woodoc.com. We offer free, professional advice on woodcare matters. Contact us on e-mail at information@ woodoc.com, WhatsApp: +27 66 302 4702 , Call Toll-Free: 0800 411 200 or visit our Facebook page.

LIVE HANDS-ON

Superflex –Essential to EVERY toolbox

Grinding Technique's locally manufactured Superflex range not only offers a wide variety of cutting and grinding media, but also boasts a diverse selection of coated products and surface conditioning abrasives.

When it comes to choosing the correct abrasives for hand tools, it is important to know the application, and the desired result. Not only will the correct abrasive ensure the longevity of the hand tool, but it will also result in a high work rate efficiency and successful completion of any job.

One of the most important factors to consider when it comes to abrasives, is the type of material that will be used for the application.

As abrasives are manufactured for either ferrous or non-ferrous materials, information displayed on the disc label should be considered when choosing a particular disc. Contamination can easily occur when using the same abrasives on multiple materials.

Disc labels marked for ‘Steel’ or ‘Metal’ , are suitable for ‘ferrous metals’ and not ideal for ‘non-ferrous metals’. Aluminium, being a nonferrous metal, has very different characteristics to mild or normal carbon steels. Using a steel cutting disc on aluminium will result in the edge of the disc becoming clogged and heating up, causing stress and possible disc failure and breakage. Identifying and using the correct abrasive product, whether it be for cutting, grinding, or blending, is core to the

// When it comes to choosing the correct abrasives for hand tools, it is important to know the application and desired result //

successful completion of any job.

Along with conventional cuttingand-grinding discs, the Superflex range also boasts special purpose cutting-andgrinding discs.

Dome-shaped and classified as a Type 28, the Superflex Curve cut allows for effortless cutting of multiple sizes of circles and curves from sheet metal with only one disc.

Locally manufactured and available in various diameters, this disc is the ideal tool for handheld radii and contour cutting. Typical applications include cutting wheel fenders on custom cars, ellipses in large bore pipes for T-joining, and IBR or corrugated roofing to fit curved profiles, and installing of extractor fans and turbines.

Another versatile tool is the Superflex Dual Purpose Cut & Grind abrasive disc. Replacing a two-step application, one disc can now be used for both cutting, and light grinding. Previously, a cutting disc would have to be changed out with a grinding disc for burr removal after the initial cutting application, while the Cut Grind allows for both these applications to be completed safely with only

one disc. The Superflex Dual Purpose Cut & Grind abrasive disc is ideal for weld blending and cleaning, where the thicker Angle Grinding discs would remove too much base material.

Most cutting-and-grinding discs are available in standard sizes to fit both the 115-and-230mm diameter angle grinders. When selecting a disc, look out for a premium quality brand that offers fast and smooth cuts with high stock removal, durability, and longevity.

Available in a diverse range of products, nonwoven abrasives offer the perfect solution to surface preparation and fine finishing.

Hand pads and rolls are primarily used for light cleaning and processing, polishing surfaces using orbital sanders or hand-guided grinding and available in specifications from coarse to very-fine. Longevity is guaranteed thanks to the abrasive impregnated into the entire fleece of the product and not only located on the surface. These products provide complete flexibility to the geometry of the workpiece surface.

Non-Woven Flap discs will remove and blend rough scratch marks on the surface with no discolouration due to the multi-dimensional flap design reducing heat on application.

Unitised and Polishing discs are also available and when used in conjunction with polishing paste, will achieve a mirror finish in no time. Superflex products are available from major retailers.

CONTROL AND TESTING

product testing and quality control centre

In the ever-evolving hardware retail landscape, quality and reliability are paramount. Vermont Sales has set a benchmark in the industry with its groundbreaking Product Test and Quality Control (QC) Centre. This facility, spearheaded by the proactive efforts of Louis Fourie, ensures that every product meets the highest standards before it reaches the hands of customers.

THE BIRTH OF A TESTING POWERHOUSE

The genesis of the Product Test Centre can be traced back to Louis Fourie, a dedicated Vermont tools demonstrator. Louis discovered inconsistencies in some tools and began random testing. His initiative laid the groundwork for what has become a fully-fledged Testing Centre since 2019. Today, Vermont Sales tests every product before purchasing from suppliers, documenting all results meticulously. This robust data library facilitates easy reference and ensures continuous quality improvements.

COMPREHENSIVE TESTING FOR OWNED BRANDS

For Vermont Sales’ six proprietary brands, this initiative is transformative. The centre not only tests and evaluates tool features but also undertakes redesigns when necessary. Feedback is sent back to manufacturers, who are receptive to these insights and often make upgrades. This feedback loop leads to continuous improvements benefiting both South Africa and the global market, offering a unique service that enhances the quality and performance of tools globally.

For three consecutive weeks in June, EST hosted regional trade shows in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban respectively. Dubbed one of its most succesful events since the pandemic, EST hosted over 120 exhibitors across the three locations.

The Cape Town trade show, which catered for the Western Cape and surrounding areas, was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 04 June. Despite the onset of extremely low temperatures marking the official start of winter, the event still attracted large crowds.

DIY & Industrial Trade News attended the Johannesburg event, which was held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on 11 June. Despite the venue hosting other expos, the EST Trade Show was a great success. Visitors easily found their way to the event which occupied the main hall, ensuring high visibility and attendance.

The show was well organised starting with a seamless registration process.

Speaking to several exhibitors during the show, they unanimously agreed that this year's event saw significantly more engagement and interaction. One exhibitor noted that by midday, they had already had 150 retailers to their stand.

For exhibitors, this opportunity to share product information and offerings with retailers is invaluable, confirming that Trade Shows continue to be a valuable marketing tool for their businesses.

While capturing the interactions and festivities of the day, it was encouraging to see visitors scanning their tags at virtually

every stand, walking away with valuable branded giveaways and samples they could use at their leisure.

To ensure retailers stayed at the venue for the day, EST provided refreshments for everyone. Tea, coffee and juice stations were available in designated areas where visitors could sit and take breaks. Lunch was also served to all attendees, ensuring they remained comfortable and well-fed.

The International Convention Centre in Durban was the venue for the last of the regional shows, capping off a successful three-part event. Exhibitors at the Durban event experienced the same high level of interaction and engagement with the KZN retailers.

Build it launches B-Live at Members' meetings and Trade Shows

Build it recently innovatively revamped its engagement strategy by introducing regional trade shows and retail members’ meetings under a magazine show format called B-LIVE, which is an extension of the Always On Always One theme from its National Convention 2023. The trade shows and retail members’ meetings will alternate with its biennial National Convention. This new format aims to enhance brand awareness and foster closer collaboration among retail members and Central Office, in real time.

Common to all events was a brand overview and strategy update delivered by Build it Managing Director, Hawie du Preez and a merchandise update by Build it National Merchandise Executive, Rowan Scully. Wellknown and outrageously hilarious comedian and MC, Nik Rabinowitz hosted, and delivered a comedy skit at each event, providing lots of fun, laughter and engagement for everyone. The highlight for the retail members was an

inquiry session facilitated by TBWA chief strategist, Andre le Roux. In keeping with the B-Live format, the inquiry allowed retail members to feedback on pertinent questions, in real time, via Mentimeter. This feedback will help guide the brand’s strategic way forward. This is an extremely bold and brave way forward for Build it and a massive step in the right direction.

All events featured a daytime trade show,

with incentives and great deals ensuring retail members visited all supplier stands, and a lively retail members’ meeting in the evening. The evening events were led by their respective Regional Operations Executives, welcoming all attendees, and providing a regional update. Regional awards were announced, and the National Awards were presented at the final event, in the Western Cape.
