HYBRIDITY

The world is what we make of it

In our ever-changing world, we constantly switch between digital and physical, global and local, past and present. This fluidity influences our colour choices, allowing us to mix, match, and mash-up inspirations freely. In South Africa, blending cultures is second nature.

The 2025 Plascon Colour Forecast embodies this spirit with its theme of Hybridity.

ORGANIC x MANMADE

Colours inspired by nature, connecting us to something bigger. Use them for a calming effect or to ground other palettes.

Bright economic forecast shines ahead of Christmas

By mid-October, Eskom had recorded 200 days of no loadshedding. In the same period, the inflation rate dropped. The rand regained strength and the interest rates decreased by 25 basis points. The gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 1% in 2024, which was received positively by economists. Moreover, the Bureau for Economic Research believes South Africa’s GDP can grow by more than 2% in 2025. All the above is good news for South Africa’s economy as well as business operations in the country, as this revives the belief in the possibility of growing business and investor confidence in the country. For the retail sector, this means that the customer’s buying power is likely to grow, resulting in business growth for the sector. In this

month’s issue, we cover the success of the Essential Trade Show (page 69), the DIY Depot D-Day Festival had about 85% member attendance this year (page 76), and the Matus Trade Show, packed with fun and competitions (page 84). Get your tips on how to keep your garden revived this summer (page 10) and remember to have a look at this month’s Retailer’s Guide (page 21).

How to keep gardens cool and thriving in the summer

The summer season brings a fresh perspective with the warmer temperatures, the birds chirping and nature’s canvas boasting bursts of colour and greenery. This backdrop makes it the perfect time to head outside and soak up the warmth while prepping your garden for the season ahead.

Tip 1: Be water savvy

Keeping your garden hydrated in the summer season is a necessity. However, it is as important to ensure that you water your plants at the right time. Watering throughout a hot summer day where temperatures rise is not the best solution to keep your plants hydrated nor is watering at night, as this increases the chances of fungal growth. Instead, water your plants early in the morning to avoid the heat from drying out the water, ensuring the plants have absorbed and retained the moisture. The GARDENA Soil Moisture Sensor is an innovative tool that automatically measures the current soil moisture level and transmits it to your GARDENA Water Control. If the soil is still sufficiently moist, the upcoming watering cycle is skipped, ensuring your plants receive reliable and accurate care.

The GARDENA Range of Water Controls

are a great way to keep your garden hydrated throughout the summer season. The range includes timers, computers and smart systems that automate the watering process. From scheduling watering sessions to in-app watering, the Water Control systems are more reliable, efficient, and less taxing than manual watering.

The GARDENA Water Control Bluetooth system is one example from the range which configures your garden’s automatic irrigation system with your smart phone or tablet. The control is installed directly onto the tap and can be set up within a radius of up to 10m, with watering easily started and stopped with just the touch of a button.

Investing in the GARDENA Range of Water Controls not only helps you save water but makes the job easier and ensures your plants receive the exact amount of water they need every time, even while you’re on holiday.

GARDENING

Tip 2: Keep your garden cool

An essential tip to keep your garden thriving is to maintain a cool temperature within the soil. This can be achieved through methods such as mulching, planting ground covers and strategically placing trees. These practices help sustain moisture levels and protect your plants from the heat.

// Investing in the Gardena Range of Water Controls

Tip 4: Spruce up the outdoors

As the warmer weather beckons us outdoors, it’s important to refresh the exterior areas of the house to create a healthy and inviting environment. The GARDENA Cleansystem offers an efficient, water-connected solution for various cleaning tasks. From patios and windows to furniture and floors, its versatile range of attachments allows you to easily and effectively clean a variety of surfaces by simply connecting to your garden hose. One important cleaning task that is often overlooked is the maintenance of solar panels. Keeping your solar panels clean and dust and debris free is crucial to ensure optimal performance. The GARDENA Cleansystem’s gentle yet effective range of brushes are designed to remove dirt without scratching, ensuring your solar panels remain in peak condition.

Tip 5: Replenish the soil

In hot summer temperatures, your garden soil is prone to drying out, lowering its moisture retention. A great way to combat this is by adding a layer of compost to your soil. Not only does this boost the soil’s nutrients but also helps it retain water better, creating a healthier environment for your plants to thrive. The GARDENA range of trowels, spades, forks, and hoes are indispensable tools for aerating, digging, loosening soil and more.

A great all-in-one recommendation is the GARDENA combisystem, which allows you to effortlessly combine different handles with various tools. This allows you to get more tools, use less space and easily tackle more gardening projects, as having the right tools at your disposal can make all the difference to the health of your garden.

// The Gardena combisystem allows the user to effortlessly combine different handles with various tools

Tip 3: Prune and trim

Pruning is an important gardening practice as it encourages healthy plant growth by trimming down overgrowth and removing dried leaves to allow airflow, light, and water to reach the plant. GARDENA’s range of secateurs and loppers are ideal for the job at hand. These tools are easy to use, effective, durable and provide a precise, healthy cut every time. The range is also lightweight and ergonomically shaped to fit comfortably in your hand without slipping so you can easily and comfortably maintain your garden’s health and aesthetics.

Tip 6: Fertilise your plants

The summer season serves as one of the most important seasons of growth for most plants. Apply fertiliser to keep up with this growth period to ensure plants receive the essential nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. GARDENA recommends the Hand-held Spreader M, ideal for evenly distributing fertiliser on smaller areas of up to 100m.

Tip 7: Refresh the lawn

After a cold dormant season your lawn will benefit from some extra care to prepare it for the warmer months ahead. Start by removing debris such as sticks and leaves from the lawn, making sure to remove any visible weeds. Next, mow the lawn at least once a week, keeping the blade height from 5cm to 7cm. This promotes healthy growth and helps shade the soil, reducing moisture loss. Finally, apply high-quality fertiliser and water deeply to encourage lush, green growth.

For a clean, efficient cut, consider GARDENA’s range of robotic, rotary and cylinder lawnmowers as well as the range of grass shears, trimmers and more to help maintain the perfect lawn all summer long. If you prefer to sit back and just enjoy your

garden this summer, without lifting a finger to mow the lawn, then the SILENO robotic lawnmower is the perfect choice. With builtin intelligent technology and innovative

// With these tools and tips, retailers will be in a position to educate customers on how to ensure their gardens thrive

features, the SILENO silently goes about mowing your lawn without disturbing your neighbours. The SILENO lawnmowers cater for all lawn sizes from 250m² to 1 500m².

Power Tool Accessories are a major contributor to DIY Sales

In this issue of DIY & Industrial Trade News, Aquidneck shifts the focus to power tool accessories with a special emphasis on drill bits. This product segment is a classic example how blind lines provide the potential for positive price adjustments when analysing a whole product range or product family.

Aquidneck’s findings will be featured in a series of articles by DIY & Industrial Trade News, offering monthly updates across various hardware categories.

// Due to their massive range and specialised spectrum, power tool accessories require a fair share of shelf space //

Within the drill bit segment, there is a high degree of specialisation accounting for the very deep range. The most common sub-group are masonry drill bits which represented 35% of the value and 39% of the units of drill bits in August. Followed by metal drill bits at 30% and 36% respectively (bit more if one adds dedicated steel drill bits). Standard wood drill bits are also very popular at 8% and 9%. However, the wood segment is significantly larger if combined with specialised wood drill bits (hole saw, spade, etc). Price wise, 59% of the sales of drill bits (excluding sets) are generated by items retailing below R50 per transaction. The price band between R50 and R100 contributes another 26% and the price band between R100

Generally, without considering the type of drill bit, the average price roughly increases with size. In the attached graph, the blue bars represent the average price per size in milimetres (mm) (intermediate sizes rounded down to the next integer) for the year-to-date. The red line represents the sales volume share for each of these sizes for the same time frame. Most sales occurred between 2mm and 16mm with notable exceptions up to 38mm. Above this threshold, the volume share declines rapidly, but the value contribution remains critical, while a specialised range continues to attract foot traffic.

Masonry drill bits (standard and SDS combined) generated 41% of the value in the year-to-date well ahead of the other types. The most popular sizes are 6mm at 24% in value, 8mm at 17%, 10mm at 11% and 12mm at 15%. Together, these four sizes contribute 2/3 of the value generation of masonry drill bits in August. Larger sizes (14mm and 16mm together at 14%) are also relevant. One surprising characteristic of masonry drill bits is that uneven sizes apart from 5mm (8%) are generally irrelevant from a sales perspective when purchased individually.

The volume and price overview for masonry drill bits displays the sales share in per cent (red line) vis-à-vis the average price by sizes in mm (blue bars). The intermediate sizes are rounded down to the next integer, drill sets are excluded. The range of masonry drill bits is limited to sizes between 3mm and 16mm, the sales share of the other sizes being negligible. Except for the 3mm and 5mm segments the size intervals tend to follow even numbers while the uneven sizes (7mm, 9mm, 11mm, 13mm and 15mm) contribute very little to the overall sales. Furthermore, the average prices for the uneven sizes are always lower than their respective even counterparts. For example, the average price for a 6mm drill bit is R66, the larger 7mm retails for R52. The same effect is visible for the larger sizes as well. Considering that the sales contribution of the uneven sizes from 7mm up is very small it makes little sense to price them below their even counterparts.

Metal drill bits generate 23% of the total turnover in the year-to-date, drill sets are relevant generating 16% of the volume; however, it must be noted that sizes below 4mm are generally sold as two-piece combos and allocated to the drill bit set segment. Unlike their masonry counterparts the size range is significantly larger and intermediate sizes are common compounding the range depth of metal drill bits. From a sales perspective sizes up to and including 8mm are the most relevant ones although the value contribution of larger sizes (10mm or 12mm) is critical.

The volume and price overview for metal drill bits (red line shows sales units in percentage and the blue bars display average price by size) reiterates the focus of the smaller sizes as well as the relevance of intermediate sizes. From a sales perspective up to 8mm plus the 10mm and 12mm brackets generate most of the sales. Price points from smallest to largest tend to increase with size in a linear fashion.

ISSUE 5: CHEMICAL ANCHORS

Retailers Guide to Chemical Anchors

Chemical anchors are specialised fasteners designed to securely anchor heavy loads to materials like concrete, brick, or other masonry surfaces. Unlike traditional mechanical anchors (which rely on friction or expansion), chemical anchors use an adhesive – typically a two-part resin like epoxy, polyester, or vinyl ester – that bonds the anchor to the substrate.

KEY FEATURES

HERE’S A BREAKDOWN OF HOW CHEMICAL ANCHORS WORK

DRILLING THE HOLE: A hole is drilled into the base material (concrete, brick, etc).

CLEANING THE HOLE: The hole must be thoroughly cleaned of dust and debris to ensure a strong bond.

INSERTING THE ADHESIVE: The resin is injected into the hole, either from a cartridge or tube.

INSERTING THE ANCHOR: A threaded rod or rebar is pushed into the resin-filled hole, ensuring full coverage.

CURING: The resin hardens, bonding the anchor securely to the base material.

ATTACHING LOADS: Once the resin has cured, loads can be safely attached to the anchor.

• HIGH STRENGTH: Chemical anchors are ideal for heavy loads and high-stress applications.

cracked concrete or soft masonry.

// Chemical Anchors are specialised fasteners designed to securely anchor loads to various surfaces // 1 2 3 4 5 6

• FLEXIBLE USE: They are often used where traditional anchors won’t hold, such as

• NO EXPANSION STRESS: Unlike mechanical anchors, they don’t exert expansion pressure on the base material, reducing the risk of cracks.

• CORROSION RESISTANCE: The resin offers protection from environmental factors like moisture, chemicals, and corrosion.

APPLICATIONS

• Structural steel installations

• Securing railings, balustrades, or safety barriers

• Installing heavy machinery or shelving

• Retrofitting applications, like adding structural reinforcements to existing buildings.

They’re widely used in construction for securing heavy-duty installations to concrete or masonry where high loadbearing capacity is required.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

The Dominator is a vinylester-based chemical anchor known for its:

• Styrene-free formula: Environmentally conscious and suitable for enclosed spaces

• High mechanical strength

• Threaded rod and rebar. This makes it versatile for a wide range of heavy-duty installations, including aerated concrete.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

Vinylester chemical anchors are typically used in high-load and critical applications such as:

• Structural repairs

• Bridge construction

• Industrial projects requiring superior chemical resistance.

Whether it’s holding up in tough environments or providing long-lasting support in high-stress areas, the Dominator delivers robust performance.

The Dynamic Polyester Chemical Anchor: Styrene-free, medium-load solution

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

The D-Tech Dynamic Polyester Chemical Anchor is a two-component anchoring system designed for medium-load applications. It is:

• Styrene-free, making it environmentally friendly

APPLICATION AND INSTALLATION PROCESS

1 2 3 4 5

DRILL THE HOLE: Ensure the hole is the correct size and depth for the anchor.

CLEAN THE HOLE: Use a brush and blower to remove debris.

INJECT THE RESIN: Use a dispensing gun to inject resin into the hole from the bottom up.

INSERT THE ANCHOR: Twist the threaded rod or rebar into the resin-filled hole.

CURE TIME: Allow the resin to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

UNDERSTANDING DRY, WET, AND FLOODED HOLES

• DRY HOLES: No humidity present

• WET HOLES: Holes with humidity but not submerged in water.

• FLOODED HOLES: Full of water but not submerged, typical in installations after heavy rain.

Both the Dominator and Dynamic olyester Chemical Anchors are unsuitable for underwater applications – an epoxy-based chemical is required in such cases.

MIXING NOZZLES

Using the correct mixing nozzle is crucial for achieving an optimal bond with chemical anchors. A good nozzle:

• Combines the two components of the anchor resin

• Controls dispensing volume, reducing waste

• Ensures the correct mixture for maximum strength.

Always discard the first 10cm of resin to ensure the two components are properly mixed.

APPLICATORS

Choose between conventional two component caulking guns or new innovative guns driven by cordless drills.

SAFETY AND STORAGE

Storage and shelf life

Both the Dominator and Dynamic chemical

anchors have an 18-month shelf life when stored between +5°C and +25°C, away from sunlight.

SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Both products should be used with personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves and goggles, in well-ventilated areas. The styrenefree formulation of the Dynamic Polyester Chemical Anchor makes it safer for use without strong odours, reducing environmental impact.

WHY STOCK D-TECH CHEMICAL ANCHORS?

For retailers, stocking both D-Tech Dominator and Dynamic Polyester Chemical Anchors covers a broad range of customer needs – from high-load structural applications to mediumload DIY and contractor projects. With their ETA approvals, ease of use, and environmentally friendly properties, these products are a reliable addition to any inventory.

Big smiles at NMCH thanks to the Build-a-Bear donation station

With the goal of bringing comfort to some of the many South African children undergoing serious medical treatment at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH) in Johannesburg, Plascon and Mica sponsored a Builda-Bear station at the Mica Market annual trade fair.

In September, 600 attendees were invited to customise a teddy bear to keep or donate to the hospital. Plascon has generously matched the total number of soft toys created by Mica on the day, resulting in a heartfelt donation to the hospital’s young patients.

“We understand the difficulties surrounding children’s medical treatments in some of our communities and we’d like to show we care with our built-with-love teddies. We hope this gesture brings smiles to their faces and a little extra comfort during their hospital stay,” says Plascon brand marketing manager Kristel Dreyer.

The Mica Market presented the perfect opportunity to call upon a large audience of 120 stores, 100 suppliers, and a support team, to make a meaningful difference. Ingrained in Mica and Plascon’s DNA is a shared passion to uplift the local communities they serve, and Build-a-Bear’s sponsorship provided a

platform to make this possible.

Visitors who took part in the Build-a-Bear activation were given a choice of colour, outfit, and accessories. With the addition of co-branded Plascon and Mica details, they could produce a unique furry friend to take home or add to the donation pile.

The matched donation was not contingent on the choice to donate or not, but rather on the overall number of plush toys that were built at the Mica Market. Every participant opting to donate was photographed with their toy, to accompany the in-person handover at the hospital.

NMCH was established by Nelson Mandela in 1995 as an NPO and it is a dedicated paediatric facility serving the children of Southern Africa. By working together, Plascon and Mica are helping to further the hospital’s vision of changing the way society treats its children and youth to improve their conditions and lives.

Unmatched wood defence: Varnish, Woodseal, and OneForWood

Wood can be one of the most beautiful and versatile materials in and around the home. However, it requires the right care to maintain its natural beauty and withstand the harsh effects of weathering.

Duram’s range of wood products offers an excellent solution for homeowners and tradespeople alike, providing long-lasting protection and enhancing the natural grain and colour of both softwood and hardwood. Let’s take a closer look at Duram’s Varnish, Woodseal, and OneForWood products.

NEW: DURAM VARNISH - TOUGH AND BEAUTIFUL

Duram Varnish is an oil-based urethane wood varnish designed for both interior and exterior wood. Whether it’s doors, windows, furniture, or fences, this product provides a tough, scratchresistant finish that highlights the natural beauty of wood. It has

been QUV tested to ensure excellent UV and weather protection, making it a great choice for wood exposed to the elements.

One of the main benefits of Duram Varnish is its ability to resist cracking and peeling. Its flexibility allows it to move with the natural expansion and contraction of wood, ensuring long-term adhesion. Additionally, it protects wood against water, rot, decay, and even insect attacks. Duram Varnish is available in a variety of colours like Clear, Oak, Meranti, Mahogany, Teak, and Imbuia, which provides options to match any wood surface.

NEW LOOK: DURAM WOODSEALNOURISH AND PRESERVE

For those looking for a more natural finish, Duram Woodseal is a linseed oil-based

wood preservative that nourishes and enhances the wood’s grain. This penetrating product is perfect for interior and exterior applications like fences, gates, doors, windows, garage doors, pergolas, wendy houses, trims, and wood panels. It’s easy to apply and doesn’t require sanding between coats, saving time while delivering professional results.

The active ingredient in Duram Woodseal protects wood from water penetration, rot, and insect damage and is UV- and weather-resistant, providing long-lasting protection. The result is a rich, oiled look that replenishes the wood’s natural oils, giving it a fresh appearance while preventing fading and discolouration.

NEW INNOVATION: DURAM ONEFORWOODONE PRODUCT. ONE SOLUTION

For those seeking a versatile product that combines both primer and topcoat, Duram OneForWood is the answer. This innovative water-based coating can be applied directly to bare or previously painted or varnished wood, making it a time-saver for both DIY enthusiasts and professionals. Its self-priming formula adheres to wood and MDF, providing excellent flexibility to prevent cracking and peeling.

Duram OneForWood has been QUV tested for superior UV and weather resistance, and its luxury satin finish is available for colour tinting from Duram’s in-store Colour Wall, to revitalise imperfect wood. This product is ideal for both interior and exterior woodwork, including doors, pergolas, fences, windows, furniture, and trim.

A SOLUTION FOR EVERY WOOD SURFACE

Whether you need a tough, durable varnish, a nourishing wood preservative, or a direct-to-wood paint and primer, Duram has the perfect solution. The range of wood coatings is designed to protect and enhance wood, ensuring it stays beautiful for years to come. dick & allsop mica marks 116 years of hardware excellence

In 1906, Fredrick Allsop and Robert Dick stood outside Mauritz Uys’s shop on Main Street, Paarl. It was here, at just 15 years old, that Fredrick asked a pivotal question: “If Mauritz can be a shopkeeper, why can’t we?” This simple observation sparked a partnership that would become the foundation of Dick & Allsop, with their Wellington branch established in 1908.

// The management team share a strong sense of pride in their heritage and an even stronger commitment to the local community //

Fast forward to 1999, when Kobus Fourie aligned the business with Mica Hardware, marking the birth of Dick & Allsop Mica. After the tragic loss of Johan Fourie, the store transitioned in 2017 to new ownership under the Spiro’s Group, a family-owned business led by Steven Sollinger, committed to maintaining the same community-focused values that have defined Dick & Allsop Mica for over a century. The Spiro’s Group also owns Spiro’s Mega Mica in Durbanville and Kendal Mica in Diep River. Recent changes in 2023 have seen a fresh management team take the helm. Andrew Fransman and Mervan Fortuin now manage the store, while Letisha Combrink leads the administrative team. With a strong sense of

pride in their heritage and an even stronger commitment to the local community, Dick & Allsop Mica continues to serve Wellington with dedication and expertise.

Branch manager Andrew Fransman, who joined the company in 2016, shares his journey from salesperson to store manager. “Dick & Allsop Mica is renowned for its welcoming culture. I’m passionate about helping customers find solutions, and it’s rewarding to share what I’ve learned with the team.”

Assistant manager Mervan Fortuin, who started at the store the very next day after his interview in 2016, has developed a deep passion for hardware retail. “I’m grateful for the trust and guidance I’ve received. It’s

fulfilling to help customers complete their projects and solve their hardware issues.”

Administrative manager Letisha Combrink, who started in 2018 as a sales consultant, highlights the personal growth she’s experienced. “Dick & Allsop Mica has given me my voice. I’ll forever be grateful and make it my mission to pay it forward.”

As Dick & Allsop Mica recently underwent renovations, the store now boasts an additional till point at the back for customer convenience, along with a newly paved car park. These improvements ensure a better shopping experience, and the team looks forward to serving the Wellington community for many more years as their trusted hardware partner.

Ten years of dedication, innovation, and success

When Middelburg Mica opened its doors on 25 July 2014, no one could have foreseen the journey ahead. “We had no idea what was waiting for us – both the good and the tough times,” recalls Hugo de Wit, owner of Middelburg Mega Mica.

The former Mica in Middelburg had closed its doors after liquidation, leaving a gap in the market and a sense of loss for the community. However, de Wit, already managing Highveld Mica in Secunda, saw an opportunity to reignite the Mica spirit in the town.

What followed was the birth of a new, stronger Middelburg Mica – a store built on hard work, resilience, and a shared vision of service excellence. de Wit and his wife, Hanlie, worked tirelessly alongside their team to restore the trust of their local customers. “There were some very hard times in the first few years, both financially and in terms of rebuilding customer confidence,” de Wit reflects. “But giving up was never an option. We just kept pushing forward, making new plans, and improving at every step.”

The hard work paid off. In December 2023, Middelburg Mica was elevated to Mega Mica status, joining the ranks of the topperforming Micas in South Africa. This was not just a testament to the store’s growth but also to the dedication of its team. On 25 July 2024, the store celebrated its 10th anniversary – a decade of continuous growth, service excellence, and community support.

At the recent Mica Market, held in September 2024, the store’s incredible journey was acknowledged in a big way. Middelburg Mega Mica was awarded the prestigious ‘Mica Member of the Year’, the highest accolade in the Mica franchise. This achievement is a crowning moment for de Wit, Hanlie, and their dedicated team. “We are so grateful to every customer for their support, every employee who gives their best every day, and the community that continues to believe in us,” said de Wit. “This award is truly a team effort. We are a great team!”

With a forward-looking approach, Middelburg Mega Mica continues to evolve and serve the diverse needs of its customers.

The store’s offerings go beyond traditional hardware – it’s a one-stop destination for a broad range of products. For the DIY enthusiast, the store has everything

from wood and shelving to plumbing and the widest selection of power tools in Middelburg. For the gardener, there’s a wide array of equipment, while the arts and crafts section appeal to those with creative inclinations. Builders and renovators are also well-catered for, with all the necessary supplies from start to finish, including paint, light fittings, and personalised service. The store even has representatives who can visit homes to provide quotations and ensure timely delivery of materials.

As they look ahead to the future, the de Wit couple and the entire team at Middelburg Mega Mica are excited about what lies ahead. “We’re committed to continuing our legacy of great service, better prices, and customerfirst solutions,” says de Wit.

With their strong team, diverse product range, and an unwavering focus on customer satisfaction, the future of Middelburg Mega Mica looks brighter than ever.

Woodoc 45 is a water-borne tile and cement sealer, suitable for unglazed, porous substrates, protects against water ingress, weathering, pollution, and general wear. If water quickly absorbs into the substrate, it is sufficiently porous for applying Woodoc 45.

Toyota Gazoo Racing ignites excitement

Following the overwhelming success of the inaugural event in 2023, Ingco Tools once again partnered with Toyota Gazoo Racing for a spectacular Corporate Day in August 2024. Hosted by Shameer Variawa Racing (SVR), the event brought together top retailers from Mica, DIY Depot, EB’s Hardware, and Northern Bolt and Tool for an adrenaline-fueled day that perfectly blended business with high-octane motorsport excitement.

Held at the world-class Legends Adventure Farm and MX Track Racing facility, in Pretoria, the day kicked off with a warm welcome from Shameer Variawa, who expressed his gratitude to Ingco Tools for their continued support and high-quality tools that have become an essential part of the team’s success in the gruelling Dakar Rally. Variawa, a seasoned rally veteran, highlighted the

importance of reliable tools in their relentless pursuit of victory, making Ingco Tools a trusted partner in their motorsport endeavours.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the exhilarating experience on the track, where guests were given the rare opportunity to ride alongside some of the country’s top rally drivers. The event featured two distinct tracks: a technical course, driven by Henk

Lategan, and a faster, more linear track, mastered by 18-year-old sensation Saood Variawa. Although Lategan, a multiple Dakar Rally contender, was sidelined this year due to a shoulder injury, his presence and expertise were palpable as he guided the lucky retailers through the intricacies of rally driving.

HENK LATEGAN: A RALLY STAR IN THE MAKING

Henk Lategan, born into a motorsport-loving family, has become one of South Africa’s most prominent rally drivers. His career began at a young age, quickly progressing through the ranks to become a force to be reckoned with in the national and international rally scene. Lategan’s talent shone brightly as he claimed multiple South African Rally Championship titles before making his mark on the global stage.

In 2020, Lategan joined the elite ranks of the Toyota Gazoo Racing team, making his debut in the Dakar Rally, one of the most challenging

motorsport events in the world. Despite the fierce competition and gruelling conditions, he impressed the motorsport community with his fearless driving and tactical prowess. His performances in the Dakar Rally have earned him a reputation as one of the rising stars of rallying, consistently pushing the limits of both man and machine.

Despite not competing this year, Lategan’s commitment to the sport and his team remains unwavering. His expertise and deep understanding of rally driving were on full display at the Ingco Corporate Day, where he provided valuable insights and guidance to the attending retailers.

SAOOD VARIAWA - NEW HOLDER OF THE VARIAWA BATON

Fresh off his first Dakar Rally finish in an impressive 16th place, Variawa took the wheel on the faster track. With the national karting championship and the Touring Car title under his belt, Variawa's driving skills left the attendees in awe as he pushed the limits of speed and control, showcasing the incredible capabilities of the Toyota Gazoo Racing vehicles.

The event was more than just a showcase

of speed; it was a testament to the legacy of the Variawa family, who have been a force in South African motorsport for three generations. With Abdul Variawa, Shameer’s father, having pioneered the family’s racing tradition in the 1970s, and Shameer continuing the legacy with multiple national championships, the baton has now been passed to the next generation with Saood and his younger brother, Sa’aad –making their mark on the motorsport scene.

The Ingco Corporate Day was a resounding success, not only in providing a unique and thrilling experience for the retailers, but also in reinforcing the strong partnership between Ingco Tools and Toyota Gazoo Racing. With the Variawa family at the helm, the future looks bright for both Ingco and the Toyota Gazoo Racing team as they continue to push the limits of performance and excellence in the world of motorsport.

As the day came to a close, the guests left with a deeper appreciation for the precision and power that define both Ingco Tools and the Toyota Gazoo Racing team. The 2024 Ingco Corporate Day once again proved that nothing combines business and pleasure better than the roar of an engine and the thrill of the race.

elon SMART hot water system: a new era of water heating

In September, Kwikot introduced what would be reckoned to be ‘a new era of water heating’ with the launch of the Elon Smart Hot Water System – a groundbreaking solution developed by PowerOptimal and available exclusively from Kwikot.

The internationally patented Elon Smart Hot Water System can save up to 50% of households’ electricity bill through using the power of the sun to heat water. It enables direct connection of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels to any standard Kwikot electric water heater with no inverter or batteries required. Payback periods of as little as two years can be achieved depending on hot water use levels and tariffs.

As South African consumers continue to be lambasted by rapidly increasing

electricity bills, the Elon Smart Hot Water System offers a timely and essential solution for households. The monitoring and management of water temperature, solar and grid electricity use, as well as early alerts, are all accessed directly from a smartphone.

The Elon Smart Hot Water System simply plugs directly into standard Kwikot electric water heaters. Retrofit installation is as simple as exchanging the existing thermostat for the Elon Smart Hot Water System, making it an ideal upgrade for traditional water heaters.

Elon Smart Hot Water System.

ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY AND COST EFFECTIVE

While being a cost-effective solution, the Elon Smart Hot Water System also has a substantial impact on the carbon footprint of domestic hot water. Just 1kW of solar PV used for water heating in one household will save about 40t of carbon dioxide over the system’s lifetime.

“We are proud to collaborate on a solution that not only meets the immediate energy cost challenges South Africans face but also contributes to a more sustainable future. It empowers users to reduce their energy costs, lower their carbon footprint, and make a meaningful contribution to the environment, all while ensuring access to reliable, efficient water heating,” says Electrolux Home MD Murray Crow. He adds that, by integrating smart technology with renewable solar power, the company is offering a solution that puts control back in the hands of consumers, allowing them to manage their energy use remotely and make smarter choices for their households. “This is a significant step forward in addressing the country’s energy crisis and building a greener and more sustainable future for all South Africans.”

Reducing dependence on the national grid is becoming increasingly important in South Africa. The country’s ongoing electricity shortages and rising energy costs mean that alternative, renewable solutions like the Elon Smart Hot Water System are critical for long-term energy security. By leveraging solar power, the system helps alleviate pressure on the grid, providing a more resilient energy infrastructure that can withstand growing demand and reduce the risk of blackouts.

The Elon Smart Hot Water System transforms coal-fired electric geysers into smart, solar PV-ready, green appliances. It provides real-time monitoring which allows for the delivery of actionable data by the end-user.

This provides ecosystem stakeholders with the necessary insights to support decision-making and proactive management and service delivery.

Simple installation with plug-and-play solar PV enables reduced reliability on fossil fuels, improving quality of life.

Electrolux South Africa is the local market leader in hot water solutions through its Kwikot brand, and PowerOptimal is the local manufacturer and developer of the Elon Smart Hot Water System, with Microtronix being the manufacturing partner of the solution.

MEDIA TOUR

During the launch, DIY & Industrial Trade News was invited to tour both the Microtronix Manufacturing facility in Randburg

TRADE SHOW

a colourful celebration of success and collaboration

The vibrant theme of a ‘Colour Festival’ set the tone for the 2024 Matus Trade Show and Supplier Awards, held from October 3 to 5 at the Killarney Country Club in Johannesburg.

Setting the tone for successful trade shows in Durban and Cape Town, the Johannesburg event launched the Matus Trade Show circuit in style, blending business with a splash of colour and creativity.

The Johannesburg leg of the trade show was more than just another event on the hardware industry calendar. Matus embraced a vibrant theme that energised the atmosphere, transforming it into a festive, communitydriven experience.

Attendees, including suppliers and retailers, wore bright, eye-catching shirts and were welcomed with popcorn, cotton candy, upbeat music, and temporary tattoos, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere.

One of the unique features of the show was the interactive canvas placed at the awards venue. Suppliers were invited to throw colour powder balls at the canvas, signing their names as they contributed to an evolving work of art. The Matus Trade Show Logo was added to the centre of this vibrant masterpiece, which will eventually be displayed at the company’s offices as a memento of the event.

Matus MD Robin Coen took the stage at the Supplier Awards Evening on 3 October,

welcoming everyone to the show and underscoring the company’s mission to build and uplift South Africa. In his speech, Coen highlighted the remarkable shift in Matus’ sourcing strategy over the past four years. Once marked by 75% of its inventory being imported, the company has completely transformed, now sourcing 75% of its products from local suppliers.

Coen underscored the critical significance of collaboration between suppliers and retailers, drawing attention to the ongoing success of the Matus Trade Show Passport initiative. This programme, which has emerged as a hallmark of the event, incentivised attendees to explore every exhibitor’s stand by collecting stamps from each supplier to be eligible for an enticing lucky draw. With prizes that included a fully stocked trailer, a Weber braai, and an array of products.

Matus’ commitment to South Africa extends far beyond trade. Coen proudly spoke of the company’s social responsibility programmes, including black economic empowerment initiatives, bursaries, learnership programmes, and community upliftment efforts. Matus has built a business that not only serves over

4 000 customers daily, with an impressive 24-hour local and 48-hour cross-border delivery network, but also gives back to the communities it serves.

The Supplier Awards were the highlight of the evening, with accolades and Matus’ distinctive hammer trophies handed out to those who had excelled. Dewald Kotze, procurement and sourcing manager, announced the winners, celebrating creativity, growth, and collaboration.

The outdoor and indoor spaces were alive with activity, as retailers and suppliers connected and explored new opportunities. Saturday brought an extra splash of family fun, with retailers encouraged to bring their children, joining Matus staff for a day of festivities.

Suppliers from Mitco, Mackie DIY, Sprayon and CRC.

Amid a busy trade show season, Matus Johannesburg event stood out for its creativity, energy, and commitment to both business and community.
