Two months ago, Builders launched a new hardware store in Wonderboom, Pretoria, which its general manager points out was prompted by the increase of DIY enthusiasts in the area. This comes as no surprise of late as statistics have shown that globally, the DIY and home improvement market is set to grow exponentially between 2024 and 2029. What was commonly deemed a B2B sector is ‘worming’ its way to appeal to the B2C sector too, creating a shift in business which has proven beneficial to the hardware industry. padlock market sees steady growth

The August issue of DIY & Industrial Trade News provided an analysis of the sealants industry where it investigated the segments overall index between the year-to-date (YTD) – January to June 2024 – to the previous period last year. In this instalment of our series, Aquidneck shifts the focus to the padlock market, which has proven to be a significant segment in the hardware retail space.

Aquidneck’s findings will be featured in a series of articles by DIY and Industrial Trade News, offering monthly updates across various hardware categories.

The padlock market in South Africa from June 2023 to June 2024 has been influenced by economic conditions, crime rates, and technological advancements. Increased crime rates and economic growth have driven demand, while the rise of smart locks has impacted traditional padlock sales. Import dynamics and consumer trends also played significant roles.

The padlock market in South Africa is a significant segment within the DIY retail space, providing essential locking solutions for various applications. Padlocks are widely used to secure doors, gates, cabinets, lockers, bicycles, and other valuable assets. The padlock market has witnessed steady growth in recent years, driven by the increasing focus on security and the rising need for reliable locking mechanisms. Padlock sales, whether standard size or long shackle, are 71% conventional, although their turnover contribution is lower at 57% in 2024 YTD. Discus padlocks are the second most popular option at 19% in units and 31% in value followed by water resistant conventional types at 5% and 6% respectively. Around 16% of these padlocks are sold in multi-packs with twin packs at 70% in units being the most common variant.

Almost two thirds of all conventional padlocks, across all sizes, tend to retail below R100. This view also includes the more expensive multi-packs. In contrast discus padlocks sell mostly between R100 to R250. The most expensive type of padlocks are straight locking variants (also known as insurance padlocks) which generate 60% of their revenue with price points above the R250 border but their sales relevance is capped at just 1% of the total padlock market. The water-resistant models are more expensive than conventional ones, however the price gap is small with a focus on the price bracket between R100 and R150.

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

The size variety for conventional padlocks is impressive with no clear winner. The most popular size is 50mm at 27% in units in June, followed by 38mm at 24% and then 40mm at 14%. All other 10 common sizes make up 35% of the sales volume. The price range even within the same size category is major indicating for the need of offering a deep range. For example, the 50mm segment ranges in average price from just R80 for a house branded model to over R200. Similar trends can be observed across the brands in all major size categories, bear in mind that house brands are not necessarily the most affordable option and even within the same size category specs may vary in terms of shackles (long or standard), material (brass, iron, etc) or security application.

Most discus padlocks are 70mm (56% in June in units), 60mm at 25% followed by 80mm and 90mm both generating 10% each. Within the most popular size, 70mm, the average prices range from R96 for budget models to R320 for the average premium item. This price spread is linked to added security features which have been spearheaded by up-market suppliers when compared to cheaper offerings.

Discus (also known as disc or round padlocks) were initially designed to be used directly in conjunction with a hasp and staple meaning that the shackle is completely covered when closed hindering cutting attempts although the security rating is directly linked to production quality as well. Variants may include water resistance and/or hardened steel reinforced bodies. Two thirds of all discus padlocks are sold as single packs with twin packs generating almost one third of the sales volume. Larger blister packs with more than two items are rare due to their relatively high price points.

Water resistant models in this view mean dedicated ‘conventional’ padlocks with additional weather protection like a thermoplastic shell and/or keyhole cover for outdoor protection against the elements. Colour code may help in lock identification when multiple padlocks are used. Water resistant models from other padlock types are allocated to their respective type segments. Usually, this padlock type generates around 5% in volume and 6% in value contribution to the retail sales. Due to their rather high price points 85% of the sales volume is generated by single items with 14% by double packs, larger variants being negligible at just 1%.

The product range of water-resistant conventional padlocks is limited. The most popular size is 50mm generating 36% of the retail sales in June followed by 40mm at 33% and then 21% for the 30mm variants. All other sizes just make up 10% of the sales. Price wise house branded models corner the affordable price points across the size spectrum with a major gap to premium offerings. This price spread is linked to the degree of water resistance and engineering inherent to premium models.

In response to recent water and power constraints and a growing sense of environmental responsibility, Excelsior Paints has embarked on a significant green initiative.

Excelsior Paints has scaled up its efforts, implementing its own water source and purification plant. Additionally, the entire roof of their facility will soon be covered in solar panels, complemented by a backup generator. This move towards self-sufficiency and sustainability demonstrates their commitment to going off the grid and beyond.

A standout element of their green consciousness is the ‘Return the Pack’ initiative. Currently, bins are placed in Leroy Merlin stores where consumers can drop off their empty or near-empty paint buckets. Excelsior Paints collects and recycles these buckets, even accepting those with residual paint. The reclaimed paint is reworked and donated to charity. THE DIY DEPOT

Superflex – the choice for stationary cut-off discs

When it comes to the cutting of tubing, structural steel, and bar stock, abrasive cut-off discs, metal circular bandsaws and oxyacetylene cutting torches are among the most popular methods used, however it is to be noted that each have their own benefits and disadvantages.

Although the metal saw continues to be the preferred cutting-off method for large cross-sections like steel beams and plates, the abrasive cut-off disc, offers much greater speed and economy compared to a steel circular or power saw blade on a host of small-to-medium sized materials. Studies have indicated that the abrasive cut-off disc will generally outperform the metal saw and cutting torch with cuts being made with a diameter of 50mm to 150mm.

Apart from being the most economical solution for this application, using an abrasive cut-off disc also increases production due to much more cutting points present on the cut-off disc compared to circular steel or power saw blades. These cutting points are a multitude of sharp abrasive cutting edges,

commonly referred to as cutting teeth on the disc’s face that cut through the workpiece like teeth of a saw as the disc rotates at a high speed. Formally, abrasive cut-off discs were only used in applications where the material was either too hard or too delicate for a steel saw. Nowadays, they are being recognised as an efficient and high production tool capable of cutting all types of metals, including steel, brass, copper, glass, ceramics, carbides, and most composite materials. However, when it comes to dry cutting, two factors should be considered – one being discolouration and the other burning. Discolouration occurs when excessive heat is generated in cutting and can be eliminated by improving the cutting action with a different disc specification or the use of a rough sided

disc. Discoloration is particularly problematic when machining operations follow the cutting off process as it is referred to surface or skinhardening which affects machinability. While discolouration can be managed, burring cannot be eliminated in dry cutting without sacrificing disc life. Finer grit discs produce a lighter burr which is easily removed but, generally, they have a higher rate of longevity than the coarser grit discs. When it comes to the longevity of abrasive cut-off discs vs disc feed or pressure, it needs to be noted that longevity of an abrasive disc is dependent on the rate at which the abrasive grains are dulled and ultimately released by the bonding system to produce new sharp edges. When a low rate of disc feed is used, the pressure is correspondingly

light. For the abrasive grains to cut and remove the metal as chips (sparks), a reasonable amount of pressure is required. If this pressure, due to the low rate of disc feed, is too light, the abrasive grains will rub rather than cut and this will cause excessive heat build-up and softening of the bond will follow, causing the disc to wear prematurely.

Organic or resin bond refers to the substance that holds the abrasive grains in place. The bond is also often referred to as the grade, or hardness of a disc, which does not signify the hardness of the abrasive grains themselves but the hardness of the bond holding them in place.

Abrasive cut-off discs are produced in two main minerals, also known as abrasive grain types. Alumina Oxide grain which stays sharper for longer and is mainly used for applications on high tensile strength steel and other metals, while Silicon Carbide grain is more suited to applications on Non-Ferrous metals with lower tensile strength such as

carbons, brass, and copper.

Abrasive cut-off discs are manufactured with either rough or smooth sides. Smooth sided discs are used mostly in general applications where the material does not tend to load the cutting disc and when cutting is the preliminary operation. Typical materials cut with this type of disc will include hard steels, pipe, ceramic, copper rod, and tubing. Whenever the material must be free of burrs and or burn, or where a material tends to load or bind the disc, a rough sided disc is recommended. Typical materials that will require rough-sided discs would include soft materials like brass, steel cable, and soft steel. All Superflex abrasive cut-off discs are

reinforced and commonly used throughout various industries because of its very high resistance to breakage combined with fast cutting action and low rate of wear. The cut-off disc owes its strength to the built-in reinforcement.

Until now, there has been no standard minimum efficacy requirement on lamp imports, which means you can easily buy lamps that are exceptionally inefficient. They may burn brightly but the wattage consumption is high, so they use much more power than necessary. They often are of an inferior quality and pose heat and safety risks.

In fact, the South African market is flooded with lightbulbs which will not stand up to scrutiny for safety and longevity, are potentially harmful and highly inefficient, chewing through consumers’ power at a time we can ill-afford to waste electricity.

NEW LEGISLATION IS A GAME-CHANGER

The new legislation ensures that our standards are aligned with international markets – the higher standards serve us as South Africans by ensuring that all imported lamps are efficient, safer, and meet the minimum efficacy requirement to be legally imported.

Part of the new law is that a lamp must retain its advertised brightness level – the lumens value indicated on the box – for the full lifetime, whether it is 15 000 or 25 000 hours, and will not dim with age, which often happens.

The new minimum Rated Efficacy requirement works as follows:

• Efficiency refers to the energy usage of a lamp – so the light it provides relative to the power it consumes

• Light is measured in LUMENS and power in watts

• For any given lamp, by dividing the lumens output by the watts rating we get the lumen per watt rating.

EXAMPLE: a 540 lumen, 6W A60 spec globe works out as follows: 540 lumens divided by 6 watts = 90 lumens per watt

What this means for consumers is that a year from now any lightbulb that does not meet the new specification of 90lm/W should not be available in South Africa. This will last for two years, after which an even stricter specification of 105lm/W will apply.

Certain specialised lamps will be exempted from the new efficiency rating, such a colour globes and heat lamps, in which case these packs will need to clearly feature a statement to confirm that the lamp is not intended for general illumination purposes.

WHAT CAN CUSTOMERS EXPECT?

The switch will be smooth and simple: All the regular-shaped CFL and Halogen lamps that have been available up to now will be easily replaceable with an LED alternative, right through to the vintage look carbon filaments, which are already available in LED filament and beautiful amber shades.

Skillcraft Open Day 2024: A showcase of innovation and customer engagement

The second Skillcraft Open Day of 2024, held simultaneously across Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg, marked another successful event in the company’s calendar, drawing record attendance. The Open Days attracted more than 200 stores nationwide, with 88 of them attending the Johannesburg event.

Skillcraft’s open days provide a unique opportunity for customers to tour the showrooms, view new products, and experience the seamless operation of the company. All the Open Days included Warehouse Tours offering insights into logistics management, general warehouse operations, and the spares and repairs processes. An exciting update for future Johannesburg open days is the anticipated end July completion of the warehouse extension, which will add 8 000m2 to the existing 6 000m2, including a 1 200m2 showroom. This expansion promises even more streamlined operations and enhanced customer experience.

Attendees had the chance to explore the full range of Ingco products, including significant new additions.
