What’s in a pill? THE IDENTIFICATION OF medicinal products (IDMP) is a highly regulated area. ISO has a range of standards and guidance documents for IDMP which support the activities of medicines agencies worldwide. They provide the basis for data collection and exchange of information related to the characteristics of medicinal products. This enables the global identification of the ingredients of medicinal products, necessary for commercial and regulatory purposes. ISO/TR 14872, Health informatics — Identification of medicinal products — Core principles for maintenance of identifiers and terms, provides a framework for ongoing maintenance and support of identifiers and terms, which meet the criteria of IDMP standards. It describes a service delivery model and core principles which can be used as evaluation criteria for choosing IDMP terminology service providers. It also helps with the development of more robust service level agreements and governance processes used by IDMP data owners and terminology maintenance providers. The new technical report will be of use to many organisations in the biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical industries, including global regulators

SKIN CARE
Cleansing and moisturisation made easy
Cold process, one pot raw materials save time, energy and resources in the production process. They also offer consistency in quality for every batch, due to the precision and stability polymers bring to a formulation. Jacques Strydom of ChemSystems discusses the benefits of polymer technologies in wash-off and leave-on systems.
T
here are various ways to cleanse the skin. Two popular methods are normally combined in a multifunctional exfoliating face
or body wash for ultimate cleansing efficiency. This product type involves a surfactant base (normally Sodium Laureth Sulphate) to remove dirt and sebum, with abrasive particles suspended in the base. These particles could be synthetic wax spheres (historically plastic) or fine pieces of apricot kernel for example, which range in size and abrasiveness. The trick with an exfoliating cleanser is to suspend the particles uniformly and with stability for the entirety of a product’s shelf life. Aesthetics are also just as important as stability and these products enjoy the inherent ability to display a visually appealing cleansing format. For this reason, a crystal clear liquid is preferred for the particles to properly stand out and entice potential consumers. Aculyn Excel rheology modifier, available from ChemSystems, is an efficient and cost-effective way to achieve a crystal clear formulation with the required stability. Its ability to suspend particles over a wide pH range (from three to 11), is phenomenal and it’s capable of producing crystal clear gel washes.

– tested and effective on oily African skin While 35 percent of people worldwide struggle with oily skin, topical solutions available on the market are often not suitable for African skin types. In a remarkable development for the African skin care industry, BASF has tested its extract, Bix’Activ on dark skin tones.

frican skin tends to produce more sebum, has a different composition of sebum and skin lipids, and shininess can be more pronounced. This is why personal care products need to be customised to
its unique requirements. A clinical study done in Mauritius has confirmed BASF’s Bix’Activ is especially effective on oily African skin. An overproduction of sebum and resulting shininess are a common concern when it comes to African skin. In 2018, an in vivo study was done on an Asian population where Bix’Activ was shown to decrease sebaceous gland activity, pore size and skin imperfection. A new placebo controlled clinical study has also confirmed the efficacy of Bix’Activ on the unique characteristics of African skin. The study showed a decrease in

BIXA ORELLANA SEED EXTRACT Oily skin is due to hyperactive glands that produce excess sebum. Its causes are varied and range from hormonal changes to environmental factors, such as weather or air pollution and lifestyle, including the consumption of alcohol, a diet rich in dairy products and sugar. Bix’Activ is an extract of Bixa Orellana seeds. It addresses the dermatological roots of oily skin conditions by restricting the overproduction of lipids in sebaceous glands. The active ingredient conforms to the Cosmos standard for natural and organic cosmetics and is suitable for use in Natrue certified formulations.
STRONG REGIONAL APPROACH Developing customised personal care products for African type of skin is part of BASF’s overall strategy to develop consumeroriented solutions for the sub-Saharan African beauty market. In February, BASF opened its new personal care application technology laboratory in Lagos, Nigeria, which provides regional competence for the market. The opening of the application technology laboratory in Nigeria was just the start of BASF’s sub-Saharan African journey. It is working closely with customers to support them in developing innovative personal care solutions for African skin and hair. With its on-site technical support and customised personal care concepts, BASF aims to become a preferred partner to customers in the personal care industry in sub-Saharan Africa. The company’s investment in the region will increase its footprint on the continent and will nurture partnerships and innovation geared towards sustainable growth.• BASF – www.carecreations.basf.com

ANIMAL TESTING The 3Rs concept – of replacement, reduction and refinement – which is aimed at protecting animals used for scientific purposes, is widely reflected in the 10 th Edition. The test for abnormal toxicity was completely removed, and altogether, 49 individual monographs, 36 of which concern vaccines for human use, were revised. Another step is the new chapter on the substitution of in vivo methods by in vitro methods for the quality control of vaccines, which will ease the transition from in vivo to in vitro methods. In total, 59 monographs were revised in this context.
SUBSEQUENT UPDATES The 10 th Edition of the European Pharmacopoeia will become effective on 1 January 2020 and will be updated with eight supplements (10.0 to 10.8) over the following three years. Automation in action on a liquids line
Bavarian pharma manufacturer, Bionorica trusts in solutions from Romaco, a leading global supplier of processing and packaging equipment. With the help of Romaco, Bionorica recently automated various steps in its liquids production plant. By Marco Mandrioli, Romaco’s area sales manager

or over 85 years, Bionorica has been unlocking the healing power of nature to produce effective and well tolerated herbal medicines. The company has grown from a one-man business to a global player, employing
about 1 700 people and operating in more than 40 countries worldwide. The business is still owner run and has its headquarters in Neumarkt, Bavaria. At the Neumarkt site, non-sterile liquids are filled and packed in glass bottles on two liquid lines for therapeutic nose, throat and lung applications. To improve the overall equipment effectiveness of its liquids production, Bionorica decided to automate

various steps that were previously manual. In addition to depalletising and the unpacking of foil-sealed ‘safe packs’ – the feeding and inspection of bottles are now fully automated. The idea is that, in future, all modules on the line will deliver the same high level of performance. Although the filling machine theoretically has a maximum output in the region of 200 bottles per minute, this figure has never actually been reached in practice because the machine’s capacity has so far been unmatched by the performance of the other modules, notably the cartoner. This is why Bionorica opted to replace every module on the line apart from the filling machine.
The internationally successful remedy, Sinupret, on the automated liquids line at Bionorica
cartoner subsequently packs the bottles into cartons together with a leaflet. Finally, they are serialised with a 2D code and packed into cases, sealed and serialised again by a case packerpalletiser, before being automatically loaded onto pallets at the end of the line.
Four of the modules on the new packaging line are from the Karlsruhe-based Romaco Group, which develops, manufactures and distributes GMP compliant, high-tech system solutions for the pharma industry. ‘Romaco has a broad, premium quality product portfolio – which is a great advantage when implementing complex plants like ours. It means we can source several machines from just one supplier,’ explains Howard Fick of Bionorica’s engineering department. ‘The supplier also convinced us with the offering of good value for money solutions, individually tailored to our needs and its prompt and efficient support.’
A LOOK AT THE PROCESS In the first section of the fully automatic liquids line, the glass bottles delivered in safe packs are automatically depalletised and unpacked with the help of a Romaco Macofar MED 003 depacking system. They are then passed to an inspection unit, featuring a new technology jointly developed by Romaco and Bionorica, for detecting and removing faulty bottles. In the next step, the bottles are fed via a rotary table to the filling machine, where they are filled, fitted with a screw cap and labelled. A Romaco Promatic PC 4250 continuous motion

Once the safe packs have been depalletised, the Romaco Macofar MED 003 depacking machine cuts open the thermoshrink plastic packaging material with three heated, moving blades. Unlike conventional depacking systems, the MED 003 has a separate servo motor for every single movement, allowing for the individual programming and storage of unpacking parameters for any safe pack type. The format change time – Bionorica uses 30, 50 and 100mℓ bottle sizes – is significantly reduced because far fewer format parts have to be replaced with the MED 003 compared to other depacking machines with a single, central motor.
TAILORED SOLUTION PREVENTS DAMAGE To prevent damage to the filling machine due to faulty bottles, Bionorica collaborated with Romaco to develop a simple, space saving solution for monitoring empty bottles. This inspection unit, named Spectra, is necessary because the manufacturer uses blow moulded glass bottles as primary packaging for its medicines. About one to two percent of these containers are

They are detected by the sensors installed in the cartoner and the speed is then temporarily increased to 240 cartons per minute, to enable the backlog to be cleared. As a result, the filling machine upstream from the cartoner is not required to interrupt operation and there is no loss of performance on the line as a whole.
INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY The new liquids line has been up and running at Bionorica in the final configuration since July 2018. As soon as all the settings are optimised, Bionorica predicts an increase in its productivity of roughly 20 percent compared to the old line. The company’s second liquids line is about to be upgraded in the same way – starting with another Romaco Promatic PC 4250 cartoner, which is in the process of being commissioned at Bionorica. In future, the Bavarian pharmaceutical manufacturer’s complete range of liquid products will be packaged using Romaco technology. •
