In a provincial Iranian town, the children work hard to support their families. One day nine-year-old Yahya and his friend Leyla find a precious statue.

The premise is that the great Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, having boycotted the 2017 Oscars in protest at Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim travel ban, cannot be there in person to pick up his Oscar for ‘The Salesman’. But the producer bringing it to Iran for him manages to lose it after a chaotic mishap involving a taxi and a careless postman. The awestruck kids attempt to return it to its owner. There is something of a free-spirited innocence here, and the film is reminiscent of British classics such as ‘Local Hero’ or ‘Whisky Galore’. A story of magic being found in the most unlikely of places. (Subtitles)

INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA: DENMARK GODLAND VANSKABTE LAND

At the end of the 19th century, a young Danish priest is sent to a remote part of Iceland. The deeper he travels into the Icelandic landscape, the more he loses a sense of his own reality, his mission and his sense of duty.

The struggle between the strictures of religion and our own brute animal nature plays out amid the beautifully forbidding landscapes of remote Iceland in this stunning psychological epic from director Hlynur Pálmason. In the late 19th century, Danish priest Lucas (Elliott Crosset Hove) makes the perilous trek to Iceland’s south-eastern coast with the intention of establishing a church. There, the arrogant man of God finds his resolve tested as he confronts the harsh terrain, temptations of the flesh, and the reality of being an intruder in an unforgiving land. Absolutely breathtaking cinematography captures the unassuming beauty of Iceland. (Subtitles)

David Tennant is riveting, witty and intensely human in this play by C.P. Taylor and directed by Dominic Cooke.

Tennant (‘Doctor Who’) makes a much-anticipated return to the West End in a blistering reimagining of one of Britain’s most powerful, political plays. As the world faces its Second World War, John Halder, a good, intelligent German professor, finds himself pulled into a movement with unthinkable consequences. Olivier Award-winner Dominic Cooke (‘Follies’) directs C.P. Taylor’s timely tale, with a cast that also features Elliot Levey (‘Coriolanus’) and Sharon Small (‘The Bay’). Filmed live at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London.

VERMEER: THE GREATEST EXHIBITION EXHIBITION ON SCREEN

In the Spring of 2023, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam will open its doors to the largest Vermeer exhibition in history. With loans from across the world, this major retrospective will bring together Vermeer’s most famous masterpieces including ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’, ‘The Geographer’, ‘The Milkmaid’, ‘The Little Street’, ‘Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid,’ and ‘Woman Holding a Balance’. This new Exhibition on Screen film invites audiences to a private view of the exhibition, accompanied by the director of the Rijksmuseum and the curator of the show. A truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! As well as bringing Vermeer’s works together, both the Rijksmuseum and the Mauritshuis in The Hague have conducted research into Vermeer’s artistry, his artistic choices and motivations for his compositions, as well as the creative process behind his paintings. “We would not have thought it possible that so many museums are willing to lend their masterpieces. With this exhibition we can introduce a new generation to Vermeer’s paintings...” Taco Dibbits, Director of the Rijksmuseum.

The Girl With A Pearl Earring

To accompany our Vermeer Exhibition on Screen, we are delighted to offer a chance to see the visually stunning adaptation of Tracy Chevalier’s bestseller.

When her father goes blind, Griet (Scarlett Johansson) must go to work as a maid for painter Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth). While cleaning the house, Griet strikes up an unlikely friendship with Vermeer, which both agree to keep secret for fear of provoking the painter’s jealous wife, Catharina (Essie Davis). When wealthy patron Van Ruijven (Tom Wilkinson) begins to lust after Griet, and commissions a painting of her, Vermeer and Griet are obliged to spend long hours alone together. So ambitious, and intriguing, and beautiful, you will find yourself immobile in front of its canvas, drinking in the details.

Three Colours Trilogy

Help us celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of the greatest film trilogies of all time – Krzysztof Kieslowski’s ‘Three Colours Trilogy’. This cinematic masterpiece which has been given a 4K restoration, explores the themes of liberty, equality, and fraternity through a series of interrelated stories. Each film, ‘Blue’, ‘White’, and ‘Red’, represents a colour of the French flag and delves into the complexities of human relationships and emotions.

We begin the ’Three Colours Trilogy’ with ‘Blue’, Juliette Binoche’s haunting study of grief.

After living through a tragic car crash that claimed the life of her composer husband and young daughter, her initial reaction is to withdraw from her relationships, lock herself in her apartment and suppress her pain. But avoiding human interactions on the bustling streets of Paris proves impossible, and she eventually meets up with Olivier (Benoît Régent), an old friend who harbours a secret love for her, and who could draw her back to reality. ‘Blue’ is a movie that engages the mind, challenges the senses, implores a resolution, and tells, with aesthetic grace and formal elegance, a good story and a political allegory. Three Colours White

TROIS COULEURS: BLANC

Perhaps the most overlooked of Kieslowski’s seminal trilogy, this bleak but ultimately hopeful comedy is arguably the most accessible.

Polish immigrant Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski) finds himself out of a marriage, a job and a country when his French wife, Dominique (Julie Delpy), divorces him after six months due to his impotence. Forced to leave France after losing the business they jointly owned, Karol enlists fellow Polish expatriate to smuggle him back to their homeland. After successfully returning, Karol begins to build his new life, while never forgetting his old one. It’s often cruel, of course, and cool as an ice-pick, but it’s still endowed with enough unsentimental humanity to end with a touching, lyrical admission of the power of love. Essential viewing.
