INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA: FRANCE PACIFICTION

Benoît Magimel’s French high commissioner confronts the end of his personal Eden in Tahiti, in Albert Serra’s distinctive film. Serra’s epic is narratively sparse and visually vast, filled with political paranoia and an apocalyptic despair. M. de Roller, the French high commissioner, strolls around with raffish entitlement in his rumpled white suit. His somewhat broad perception of his role brings him to navigate the high-end ‘establishment’ as well as shady venues where he mingles with the locals. Especially since a persistent rumour has been going around: the sighting of a submarine whose ghostly presence could herald the return of French nuclear testing. Think John le Carré by way of David Lynch – a feverish and haunting but also wry and meditative rumination on power, secrecy and the colour of clouds over water at sunset. (Subtitles)

LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING

In this fierce, fun and glitter-flecked documentary, learn the real and complex story about the life of the architect of rock and roll. Whether it is from his infectious ‘woooo’s, a legendary impression on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’, or the many musicians, black and white, that he has influenced, everybody knows a little something about Little Richard. But underneath the makeup and the flamboyant personality, who was the real Richard Wayne Penniman? Director Lisa Cortés and a host of famous faces including John Waters, Billy Porter and Elton John try to find the man behind the selfcreated myth a pioneer for blackness and queerness in music who never got his dues, but also someone who was at war with his sexuality and religion throughout his life. Riotous, but also revealing, the perfect portrait of an icon.

Don Giovanni Met Opera

Aided by his ingenious librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart approached his operatic retelling of the Don Juan myth from a point of view that is neither tragic nor entirely comic, but rather light-hearted, urbane and ironic.

Tony Award–winning director of Broadway’s ‘A View from the Bridge’ and ‘West Side Story’, Ivo van Hove makes a major Met debut with a new take on Mozart’s tragicomedy, resetting the familiar tale of deceit and damnation in an abstract architectural landscape and shining a light into the dark corners of the story and its characters. Maestro Nathalie Stutzmann makes her Met debut conducting a star-studded cast led by baritone Peter Mattei as a magnetic Don Giovanni, alongside the Leporello of bass-baritone Adam Plachetka. This is the second of Mozart’s three operatic masterpieces being screened in Chichester monthly from April to June.

Tokyo Stories Exhibition On Screen

Based on a major exhibition at the Ashmolean in Oxford, ‘Tokyo Stories’ spans 400 years of incredibly dynamic art – ranging from the delicate woodblock prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige, to Pop Art posters, contemporary photography, Manga, film and brand-new artworks that were created on the streets.

The exhibition was a smash-hit five-star success and brought a younger and more diverse audience to the museum. The film uses the exhibition as a launchpad to travel to Tokyo itself, and explore the art and artists of the city more fully. A beautifully illustrated and richly detailed film, looking at a city which has undergone constant destruction and renewal over its 400-year history, resulting in one of the most vibrant and interesting cities on the planet.

On an impulse to reconnect with her origins, Freddie, 25, returns to South Korea where she was born before being adopted and raised in France. The headstrong young woman starts looking for her biological parents in a country she knows so little about.

A staggering masterwork that reveals itself unhurriedly, one permutation at a time, Chou’s third feature is perhaps the only film this year in which every single scene and every line of dialogue within them feel absolutely indispensable. The richness in every detail, and their unexpected ramifications over time, make for a one-of-a-kind character study. Frédérique starts to track down her biological family resulting in startling consequences. (Subtitles)

How To Blow Up A Pipeline

A crew of environmental activists plot a daring plan to disrupt an oil pipeline. A kinetic and riveting thriller with an ideological edge. Featuring a tremendous ensemble cast, ‘How to Blow Up a Pipeline’ follows a crew of young activists who plan a mission to sabotage an oil pipeline. With their daredevil plan in motion, each character’s motivations are revealed via flashbacks as the film barrels towards its explosive climax, in a relevant and vital call to arms. Daniel Goldhaber’s taut and timely thriller is part high-stakes heist, part radical exploration of the climate crisis. It is amazing how he has made bomb making on screen as tense as bomb disposal. Based on the controversial book by Andreas Malm.
