The Cow Who Sang A Song Into The Future
LA VACA QUE CANTÓ UNA CANCIÓN HACIA EL FUTURO
When thousands of fish die in a polluted river in southern Chile, Magdalena, a woman long-deceased, emerges amongst their lifeless bodies. A hauntingly beautiful Chilean fable.
Magdalena encounters her widowed husband, sending him into a state of shock and prompting the return of their daughter, Cecilia. Magdalena’s presence and her effect on the environment stirs curiosity and fear among her family. As the past comes into focus, mother and daughter are met with the opportunity to change the future. Thankfully, Francisca Alegría’s feature debut manages to be enduringly moving and hopeful instead of angry and pessimistic. This is a languidly paced art films, but it’s a rare treat to watch a film that’s deliberate, enigmatic, and easy to recommend. Even if you’re not sure what’s happening, Alegria’s film never loses your focus. (Subtitles)

Raging Bull
Returning to cinemas in a brand new 4K restoration, Scorsese’s searing masterpiece centres around De Niro’s portrayal of a brutal sportsman.
With this stunningly visceral portrait of self-destructive machismo, Martin Scorsese created one of the truly great and visionary works of modern cinema. Robert De Niro pours his blood, sweat and brute physicality into the Oscar-winning role of Jake La Motta, the rising middleweight boxer from the Bronx whose furious ambition propels him to success within the ring but whose unbridled paranoia and jealousy tatter his relationships with everyone in his orbit, including his brother and manager (Joe Pesci) and his gorgeous, streetwise wife (Cathy Moriarty). Michael Chapman’s extraordinarily tactile black-and-white cinematography, and Frank Warner’s ingenious sound design combine to make ‘Raging Bull’ a uniquely powerful exploration of violence on multiple levels – physical, emotional, psychic and spiritual.

Back By Popular Demand Allelujah
Starring Judi Dench, Jennifer Saunders and Derek Jacobi in this charming adaptation of Alan Bennett’s play about old age. When the geriatric ward in a small Yorkshire hospital is threatened with closure, the hospital decides to fight back by galvanizing the local community: they invite a news crew to film their preparations for a concert in honour of the hospital’s most distinguished nurse. What could go wrong? A warmhearted film that goes to show how devoted health care workers are and how hard they work. Alongside this is a true homage to senior citizens. How delightful, quirky and funny seniors can be. Here we get all kinds of varieties of seniors – the grumps, the uptight, the angry, the gregarious. Showing that they are just like all other age categories, the only difference is they are older.

A complex, stirring and beautifully realized portrait of interconnected lives, ‘Red’ is the captivating conclusion to a remarkable trilogy.
Krzysztof Kieślowski closes his ‘Three Colours’ trilogy in grand fashion, with an incandescent meditation on fate and chance, starring Irène Jacob as a sweet-souled yet sombre runway model in Geneva whose life dramatically intersects with that of a bitter retired judge, played by Jean-Louis Trintignant. Meanwhile, just down the street, a seemingly unrelated story of jealousy and betrayal unfolds. If ‘Blue’ was steeped in melancholy and ‘White’ appeared frosty in tone, ‘Red’ positively vibrates with a ruddy passion. It is an intimate look at forged connections and a splendid final statement from a remarkable filmmaker at the height of his powers. (Subtitles)

The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry
Harold Fry is an ordinary man who has passed through life, living on the sidelines, until he goes to post a letter one day... and just keeps walking. Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton star. Harold (Broadbent) discovers that a former friend and colleague of twenty years ago, Queenie Hennessy, has cancer and is in a hospice in Berwick-upon-Tweed. The doctors say there is nothing to be done for her. Instead of posting his feeble letter of condolence, Harold instead embarks on a 600-mile walk from Devon to Berwickupon-Tweed, believing that in some way his journey will help his friend to live. “Tell her I’m going to keep walking and she must keep living,” he says to the operator before embarking on his journey. Without maps or waterproofs and only yachting shoes on his feet, he walks and walks, while his wife Maureen (Wilton) waits at home; at first angered by what she perceives as abandonment but eventually his distance allows her emotions to resurface. Remembering her husband as he once was and everything he once meant to her. On his journey he reflects on his life, nature and the humanity of the people he meets. Based on the 2013 Booker long-listed novel by Rachel Joyce, this is sentimental but not cloying and will no doubt have you rummaging for your tissues.

Sick Of Myself
SYK PIKE
A biting indictment of contemporary absorption, and the sacrifices we make in the name of self-interest, ‘Sick of Myself’ is bitterly hilarious.
Signe and Thomas are in an unhealthy, competitive relationship that takes a vicious turn when Thomas suddenly breaks through as a contemporary artist. In response, Signe makes a desperate attempt to regain her status by creating a new persona hellbent on attracting attention and sympathy. It’s a deranged and delightfully cynical work of art that proves attention-seeking for the sake of fame always comes at a much higher cost than living in the shadows of other people’s success. The blackest of black comedies, there are moments so cringe-inducing you will curl up so far inside yourself you might implode. (Subtitles)
