THE SLEEPING BEAUTY

ROYAL BALLET

Be swept away by Tchaikovsky’s ravishing music and Oliver Messel’s sumptuous designs with this true gem from the classical repertory.

‘The Sleeping Beauty’ holds a very special place in The Royal Ballet’s heart and history. It was the first performance given by the company when the Royal Opera House reopened at Covent Garden in 1946 after World War II. In 2006, this original staging was revived and has been delighting audiences ever since. Frederick Ashton famously cited the pure classicism of Marius Petipa’s 19th century ballet as a private lesson in the atmospheric art and craft of choreography. Cast TBA.

‘Mummies’ checks all the boxes for kids’ animation movie requirements: charismatic characters, the notion of family, a funny character, and a villain that presents an appropriate contemporary conflict.

The film follows the fun adventures of three ancient Egyptian mummies who live in an underground secret city, hidden in ancient Egypt. The trio includes a princess, a former charioteer, and his younger brother, along with their pet baby crocodile. Through a series of unfortunate events, the mummies end up in present-day London and embark on a wacky and hilarious journey in search of an old ring belonging to the Royal Family, which was stolen by the ambitious archaeologist Lord Carnaby.

When her family moves from the city to the suburbs, 11-year-old Margaret navigates new friends, feelings and the beginning of adolescence.

She relies on her mother, Barbara (Rachel McAdams), who is also struggling to adjust to life outside the big city, and her adoring grandmother, Sylvia (Kathy Bates), who isn’t happy they moved away and likes to remind them every chance she gets. INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA: FRANCE THE BLUE CAFTAN

LE BLEU DU CAFTAN

A middle-aged tailor and his wife find their relationship turned upside down by the arrival of a handsome new apprentice.

Halim and Mina run a caftan shop in the medina in Salé. Halim is a maalem, an expert seamster who works at his own pace. But in order not to completely alienate their clients, the orders need to be finished in some sort of timely fashion. Which is why Halim and Mina hire Youssef, who proves to be a dependable and gifted apprentice, and who becomes smitten with Halim and his delicate mode of instruction. Above all, ‘The Blue Caftan’ is a story about a silent love triangle, an elegant melodrama that breathes love for its three protagonists, observing their lives through objects and rituals, dishes, fruits and golden threads.

Plan 75

Government programme Plan 75 encourages senior citizens to be euthanized to remedy an aged society. A low fertility rate combined with a high life expectancy, healthy lifestyles and excellent medical care – not to mention the insularity of the nation and a strict immigration policy – have conjured the perfect storm and won Japan the menacing record of being the oldest country in the world. An elderly woman, Michi, whose means of survival are vanishing, a pragmatic Plan 75 salesman, and a young Filipino labourer face choices of life and death. As Michi is slowly sucked into the euthanasia programme, the whole thing is couched in bland, gently patronizing tones that perfectly mimic the language of Japanese bureaucracy and public information campaigns. A fascinating indictment of ageism. (Subtitles)

Brandon Cronenberg (son of David) has the 1% in his sights in this unnerving satire about wealthy tourists who get more than they bargained for in a luxury resort. While staying at an isolated island resort, James (Alexander Skarsgård) and Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are enjoying a perfect vacation of pristine beaches, exceptional staff and soaking up the sun. But guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi (Mia Goth), they venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism and untold horror. A tragic accident leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime: either you’ll be executed, or, if you’re rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead. ‘Infinity Pool’ has all of the wit and viciousness of a J.G. Ballard or William S. Burroughs story, all of it slinky social satire and savagery at every turn.

INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA: ITALY THE EIGHT MOUNTAINS

LE OTTO MONTAGNE

A meditation on our capacity for love shapes this sweeping story of two friends, torn apart by family and life’s journeys but bound by something deeper.

This rich, beautiful and inexpressibly sad film is about the friendship between men who can’t talk about their feelings and about winning and losing at the great game of life. Set in the Italian Alps, two boys become firm friends until parents separate them. But fate reunites Bruno and Pietro as tough, bearded young men, played with subtlety and gentleness by Alessandro Borghi and Luca Marinelli. After a reticent, wary start Bruno suggests that, as neither have any work on, they spend an alpine summer building a shack in the valley that will be their special place. This is a movie with air in its lungs and love in its heart. (Subtitles)

Marlowe

Liam Neeson stars as the brooding down-on-his-luck detective is hired to find the exlover of a glamorous heiress. This suave, beautifully designed, gorgeously costumed 1930s-set noir takes you back to corrupt Bay City, where the sun shines brightly over disgraced copturned-private-investigator Marlowe. Neeson is sly and sexy here, his voice rumbling, as his Marlowe contends with an unreliable heiress (Diane Kruger), her untrustworthy movie-star mother (Jessica Lange), a slippery kingpin (Alan Cumming) and a gigolo (François Arnaud) – while stylishly solving a mystery that Chandler would have appreciated. Great fun!

Cast includes soprano Erin Morley as Pamina and tenor Lawrence Brownlee as Tamino. The story is told in a singspiel (“song-play”) format characterized by separate musical numbers connected by dialogue and stage activity.

INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA: PAKISTAN JOYLAND

Winner of the 2022 jury prize at Cannes. A conservative family in Pakistan is torn apart when a son falls in love with a transgender erotic dancer, in Saim Sadiq’s riveting queer drama.

Haider is an unemployed married man living in Lahore. Sensitive in disposition and accepting of his wife’s ambitions, he finds his masculinity ridiculed by his stern, wheelchair-bound father and older alpha-male brother. Encountering Biba a trans woman who performs in an erotic theatre group, Haider finds welcome release in this safe space. Employed as a back-up dancer in her act, Haider and Biba fall in love, upturning the uneasy balance of his family. THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT

In a colourful bus named Priscilla, three drag performers travel across the Australian desert performing for enthusiastic crowds and homophobic locals. A sure-fire cult classic! When drag queen Anthony (Hugo Weaving) agrees to take his act on the road, he invites fellow cross-dresser Adam (Guy Pearce) and transsexual Bernadette (Terence Stamp) to come along. But when the other two performers learn the truth about why Anthony took the job, it threatens their act and their friendship. While its premise is ripe for comedy – and it certainly delivers its fair share of laughs – ‘Priscilla’ is also a surprisingly tender and thoughtful road movie with some outstanding performances. Especially Terence Stamp who is a revelation, giving a performance of near-perfect restraint and dignity.

Love Again

What if a random text message led to the love of your life?

In this romantic comedy, dealing with the loss of her fiancé, Mira Ray sends a series of romantic texts to his old cell phone number... not realizing the number was reassigned to Rob Burns’ new work phone. A journalist, Rob is captivated by the honesty in the beautifully confessional texts. When he is assigned to write a profile of megastar Celine Dion (playing herself in her first film role), he enlists her help in figuring out how to meet Mira in person... and win her heart. If you are a fan of similarly unrealistic but oh-so-romantic movies like ‘P.S. I Love You’ and ‘Dear John’, ‘Love Again’ is definitely for you.

In northwest Tunisia, young women work the summer harvest, flirting, teasing, arguing. Throughout the day, the orchard becomes a theatre of emotions, where everyone’s dreams and hopes are played out.

Every morning in northwest Tunisia, a truck drives around picking up day laborers for the nearby fig orchard. While some are old and experienced, ‘Under the Fig Trees’ follows a group of teenage girls who take on this job during their summer school break. When we first meet them, as they giddily (if wearily) walk up onto the pickup truck, it’s clear this has all become routine for them. The day that follows, as chronicled in Erige Sehiri’s sun-dappled film, offers a rare glimpse into their seemingly mundane life and their even richer inner lives. (Subtitles)
