Dear Newport Gulls Fans, I am delighted to announce that the Newport Gulls will return to Cardines Field as we celebrate the 20th Anniversary Season of the Newport Gulls. Last summer the NECBL season was cancelled and Gulls baseball took a vacation. Baseball has played an important part in American history; it has survived our most difficult periods of time in our storied past. Baseball is a reminder of all that is good, our country’s past time, like hot dogs and apple pie. I am reminded by a famous quote from Terrance Mann in the Field of Dreams: Chuck, people will come Chuck. They’ll come to Newport for reasons they can’t even fathom. They’ll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they’re doing it. They’ll arrive at Cardines as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won’t mind if you look around, you’ll say. It’s only $5 per person. They’ll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they’ll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They’ll find they have seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their Gulls. And they’ll watch the game and it’ll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they’ll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Chuck. The one constant through all the years, Chuck, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Chuck. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Chuck. People will most definitely come.” This season let’s celebrate our past, appreciate our present and look forward to the future. On behalf of the Newport Gulls organization, we want to thank all of our former players, coaches, host families, sponsors, volunteers, interns and fans for your contributions to the last 19 years. Together we have accomplished something special here. The Newport Gulls are considered one of the premier organizations in the country and the beacon of light in the NEBCL. Let’s celebrate and be thankful. Lastly, we want to thank the City of Newport and the Newport Recreation Department for providing a home for the Newport Gulls. We are blessed to call Cardines Field our home and honored to be called the Newport Gulls. #Gullsflytogether Sincerely,

When we decided to bring the former Rhode Island Gulls from Warwick to Newport, we never imagined it would grow to be the premier summer family entertainment in “The City by The Sea”. And now here we are, 20 years later and still going strong, both on and off of Cardines Field. Newport Gulls, Ltd. is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation organized to operate what has become one of the best summer collegiate baseball organizations in the country. We are grateful for the support we receive from the City of Newport, along with our fans, volunteers, sponsors and host families. We will continue to strive toward providing the best possible family entertainment for our communities. Our motto, “Raising the Bar in Summer Collegiate Baseball,” is exemplified by all of those who make what we do possible - both on and off the field. The Newport Gulls are six-time champions of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) and in 2012 were ranked as the No. 1 summer collegiate baseball team nationally by Perfect Game USA. Early on in our history, we adopted the song “We Are Family” as a theme aimed toward the importance of making everyone associated with our operation feel a special part of it. Thank you everyone, for being part of our Gulls “Family”, and for supporting us for the last 20 years. We can’t wait for 2021 and the opportunity to get back of the field and providing Newport with the BEST in summer family entertainment. THANK YOU !

Cardines Field: A piece of baseball history since 1908 Cardines Field, the home of the Newport Gulls has a rich history involving the great American pastime. The parcel of land on which Cardines sits, formerly known as “The Basin,” had been used in the 1800’s as a source of water for the steam locomotives until the area residents complained about the stagnant water. In 1908, a small group of New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad employees cleared enough away for a diamond to play host to a six-team league. In 1919, the railroad granted permission to the oldest established amateur league in the United States, known as the George S. Donnelly Sunset League which still plays today - 99 seasons later. Between 1925 and 1936, the City of Newport leased the field for $1 per year. In 1936, the Federal WPA constructed wooden bleachers, a backstop, fencing, and additional improvements in which some are still standing. That same year, the City of Newport purchased the field and quickly made it one of the finest fields in America. Cardines is a cousin of other notable fields of that era, Ebbetts, Fenway and Wrigley all boasting a stone facade and wooden bleachers with unique outfield angles that made players famous in their ability to play the caroms. By the 1980’s, Cardines Field was in danger of being torn down to make room for a parking lot to support the successful tourist industry in Newport. A local group led by Ron MacDonald (R&R Construction), raised the funds necessary to repair the aging facility and made significant improvements to the field. Due to the efforts of Mr. MacDonald, the City of Newport passed a resolution that will keep Cardines Field as an historic landmark in Newport history. Today, the “Friends of Cardines Foundation” with support from the Aletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust and the City of Newport work hard each year to improve the historic landmark, which, in 2005 saw the addition of a new lighting system and 2018 a new playing surface, and now for 2021 season...a beautiful new scoreboard. The Newport Gulls have contributed to the renovations by constructing a modern new concession stand, purchasing picnic area materials, baseball screens and batting cage, as well as painting the inside and outside of the stadium when needed. 4

Over the years, many baseball legends have graced Cardines Field, including Jimmy Foxx, Larry Doby, Lou Gorman and Satchel Paige who sat in a rocking chair between the hockey style dugouts thinking up new names for his many pitches. Folklore has it that Babe Ruth once toed the batters box and rubber at Cardines.... One thing is for sure though, together with the City of Newport, the Newport Gulls and their community partners, will continue to work to ensure the beloved ballpark will be there for generations to come. Distances to Fences: Left Field: 315ft Left Center Field: 365ft Center Field: 395ft Right Center Field: 315ft Right Field: 285ft (Fences -28 Feet High) Seating Capacity: 3,000 Buses of our local Military unloading into Cardines Field and chanting in unison “We Believe That We Will Win” continues to be one of the most special moments in Newport Gulls history. This photo commemorates that time. 5

Newport Gulls Coaching Staff Kevin Winterrowd (Manager) Kevin Winterrowd returns to the Newport Gulls as the team’s manager for the second season in a row, and fourth in total after working as the pitching coach in 2017 and 2018. This is Winterrowd’s second stint with the Gulls, helping guide Newport to an Eastern Division Regular Season Title that saw the team end their campaign on an eight-game winning streak in 2010. A native of Yukon, OK, Winterrowd has a storied career in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. He has led the North Adams Steeple Cats and Keene Swamp Bats dating back to 2002. In 2013, Winterrowd’s Swamp Bats took home the franchise’s fourth Fay Vincent Senior Cup, and he was named the league’s Manager of the Year. “Newport’s atmosphere is unrivaled. These past few years have been a blast and I’m honored to be a part of it. It starts with leadership. This organization has been run well since the beginning and that is the culture I instill in our players” said Winterrowd about returning to Newport. Winterrowd enjoys guiding amateur ball players to reach their full potential and has been successful doing so. Well over 100 former players have went on to be drafted and play professionally. This talent was exemplified as he was responsible for evaluating and selecting players for the 17U National Development Program and National Identification Series at the USA Baseball Facility in Cary, NC. “A title is what we are after. I want to develop these young men and leave them better ballplayers when they go back to school but we are going to be competitive day in and day out. Not playing last summer fueled the fire and I’m ready to go”, continued Winterrowd. Gulls General Manager Chuck Paiva shares in Winterrowd’s excitement, stating “Kevin is the right man for Newport. He knows the league. He knows our organization. He knows how to win. This is a great man that my partners and I are proud to have represent the Gulls”. 8

Greg Zackrison (Pitching Coach) Greg Zackrison will also be returning to coach under Kevin Winterrowd again this summer. Another NECBL Veteran with an illustrious coaching background, Zackrison is the team’s Pitching Coach for the second straight season. He is currently Bridgewater State’s (Bridgewater, MA) Head Coach and another former NECBL Manager of the Year. Zackrison was given this award in 2014 while at the helm of the Plymouth Pilgrims, leading his team to an NECBL-best 34-13 record and a Southern Division Title. The NECBL hasn’t been Zackrison’s only summer ball experience. He has won championships in the New York Collegiate Baseball League and the historic Cape Cod Baseball League. Prior to Bridgewater State, Zackrison worked as the Pitching Coach for Division II Stonehill College (North Easton, MA) and Assistant Head Coach for Junior College Powerhouse Massasoit CC (Brockton,MA) . Jim Sauro (Hitting Coach) Rounding out the group of three returning coaches is Newport Hitting Coach James Sauro. He also brings with him an NECBL Manager of the Year award, receiving the accolade as Head Coach of the Ocean State Waves in 2017. His Waves rose to the #1 Ranking in Summer Collegiate Baseball during that season and they went on to represent the Southern Division in the NECBL Championship Series. One of Rhode Island’s most notable High School Baseball Coaches, Sauro has led South Kingston High School (South Kingston, RI) since 1997. The SK Rebels won the Rhode Island State Championship in 2018 after finishing as the runner up each of the two previous seasons. “To have a third former manager in this league on your staff is something special”, said GM Paiva. Paiva added, “His knowledge of the entire game and expertise in hitting is tops in the country, but more importantly, his ability to convey that insight to players is what is most significant”. 9

Every summer, Newport Gulls Baseball conducts several Youth Summer Camps at locations around Aquidneck Island. These camps are designed for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 12. Our summer camps have become very popular, averaging almost 100 participants per session. Many of our campers come from out-of-state for the opportunity to attend a Gulls camp. The camps are run by the Newport Gulls coaching staff and players, and are designed to teach the fundamentals of baseball specific to the age group and/or skill level involved. After hours of skillspecific drills and instruction, camp participants take part in contests and live game play to show off their skills, with a chance to win awards for different competitions. Our 11th Annual Mark Weed Memorial Camp will be held at Newport’s Wellington Field in Mark’s honor from July 5-8. The camp was named in honor of Mark, who was an avid supporter of youth athletics on Aquidneck Island. At his request, a foundation was set up to send children from the Island to our summer camps free of charge. All participants of the Mark Weed Memorial Camp will attend the Gulls game scheduled in his honor on Friday, July 16 for a pregame ceremony in his memory. The cost of Camp is $90, which includes instruction, a Gulls T-shirt, and Gulls game tickets. Camp takes place four days per week, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to Noon. Registration forms can be found on our website, www.newportgulls.com.
