2016 MEDIA GUIDE

Every summer, Newport Gulls Baseball conducts several Youth Summer Camps at locations around Aquidneck Island. These camps are designed for youth baseball players between the ages of 6 and 12. This year, players ages 13-17 will have an opportunity to participate in a new summer clinic, from July 25-28. Our summer camps have become very popular, averaging almost 100 participants per session. Many of our campers come from out-of-state for the opportunity to attend a Gulls camp. The camps are run by the Newport Gulls coaching staff and players, and are designed to teach the fundamentals of baseball specific to the age group and/or skill level involved. After hours of skill-specific drills and instruction, camp participants take part in contests and live game play to show off their skills, with the chance to win awards for different competitions. Our 7th Annual Mark Weed Memorial Camp will be held at Newport’s Wellington Field in Mark’s honor from July 4-7. The camp was named in honor of Mark, who was an avid supporter of youth athletics on Aquidneck Island. At his request, a foundation was set up to send children from the island to our summer camps free of charge. All participants of the Mark Weed Memorial Camp will attend the Gulls game scheduled in his honor on Friday, July 22 for a pregame ceremony in his memory. The cost of camp is $90, which includes instruction, a Gulls T-shirt, and a Gulls game ticket. Camps take place four days per week, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to Noon. The cost is a small price to pay to learn the game from the “Major League Stars of Tomorrow.” Registration forms can be found on our website, www.newportgulls.com. 2016 SUMMER CAMP SCHEDULE # DAYS DATES LOCATION 1 Mon - Thurs 6/20 - 6/23 Portsmouth LL 2 Mon - Thurs 6/27 - 6/30 Middletown LL 3 Mon - Thurs 7/4 - 7/7 Newport 5th Ward LL (Mark Weed Memorial Camp) 4 Mon - Thurs 7/11 - 7/14 Portsmouth LL 5 Mon - Thurs 7/18 - 7/21 Middletown LL 6 Mon - Thurs 7/25 - 7/28 Gaudet Middle School Ages 13-17 For a brochure or more information, contact Director of Community Relations Amberlee Majewski at 401-525-6184 or email amberlee.majewski@quinnipiac.edu with any questions. June 2016 Newport Gulls Fans, On behalf of the Newport Gulls we are excited for another summer of baseball, family entertainment, and bringing our community together. Our 2015 season was another success both on and off the field. Last season our team had the best win – loss record in the NECBL but ran into a hot Mystic club in the playoffs. Our attendance was once again the best in the NECBL. Our summer camps and reading programs were once again a tremendous success in the community. Now in our 16th year of operation, your Newport Gulls are considered the premier organization in all of summer college baseball. None of our success is possible without the support of so many; sponsors, host families, volunteers, coaches, players, interns, and loyal fans. We are so blessed to have so many sponsors who have provided the life blood for the operation to survive and succeed. We are so blessed to have so many host families who form the foundation of this organization and take our players into their homes each summer. We are so blessed to have so many volunteers; our backbone to form the operational strength that has made the Gulls the family entertainment venue in Newport County. We are so blessed to have so many interns who provide the energy and pride to learn and enhance our brand in our community. We are so blessed to have such great coaches and players who understand what it means to be a Gull and wear our uniform with pride, commitment and character. We are so blessed to have the best fan base in summer college baseball, filling Cardines every night to support their team. Lastly we are so blessed to have such a great host city and the opportunity to play at historic Cardines Field. On behalf of the Newport Gulls, we sincerely want to thank every single person who has contributed to our success, thank you. This summer we are hosting the NECBL All-Star Game at historic Cardines Field on July 17th. We are excited to bring our NECBL family together as many of our All-Stars are future Major Leaguers. In October we will be inducting another class into our Newport Gulls Hall of Fame and hope you can join us in celebrating our new class. Thank you all for your loyalty and support. Sincerely,

Chuck Paiva General Manager Newport Gulls

Cardines Field: A piece of baseball history since 1908 Cardines Field, the home of the Newport Gulls has a rich history involving the great American pastime. The parcel of land on which Cardines sits, formerly known as “The Basin”, had been used in the 1800’s as a source of water for the steam locomotives until the area residents complained about the stagnant water. In 1908, a small group of New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad employees cleared enough away for a diamond to play host to a six-team league. In 1919, the railroad granted permission to the oldest established amateur league in the United States, known as the George S. Donnelly Sunset League which still plays today - 96 seasons later. Between 1925 and 1936, the City of Newport leased the field for $1 per year. Small wooden bleachers and a backstop were added since no permanent improvements could be made to the privately owned parcel of land. In 1936, the City of Newport purchased the field and quickly made it one of the finest fields in America. Cardines is a cousin of other notable fields of that era, Ebbetts, Fenway and Wrigley all boasted a stone facade and wooden bleachers with unique outfield angles that made players famous in their ability to play the caroms. By the 1980’s, Cardines Field was in danger of being torn down to make room for a parking lot to support the successful tourist industry in Newport. A local group led by Ron MacDonald, raised the funds necessary to repair the aging facility and made significant improvements to the field. Due to the efforts of Mr. MacDonald, the City of Newport passed a resolution that will keep Cardines Field as an historic landmark in Newport history. Today, the “Friends of Cardines Foundation” with support from the Aletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust and the City of Newport work hard each year to improve the historic landmark, which, in 2001 saw the addition of a new lighting system. The Newport Gulls contributed with a modern new concession stand and in the past two years the parks and recreation department completed the renovation of the bathroom, bleachers and locker room facilities. Over the years many baseball legends have graced Cardines Field, including Jimmy Foxx, Larry Doby, Lou Gorman and Satchel Paige who sat in a rocking chair between the hockey style dugouts thinking up new names for his many pitches. Folklore has it that Babe Ruth once toed the batters box and rubber here at Cardines.... One thing is for sure though,

6

the Newport Gulls have revived the treasure, leading the NECBL in attendance for the third straight year averaging an unprecedented 50,000 fans per season and contributing to Cardines being named among the top five places to play in Summer College Baseball by Baseball America magazine. After 15 years of unprecedented success, the Newport Gulls are widely considered the premier organization in summer collegiate baseball, and a huge part of that is because the Gulls have historic Cardines Field to call home. Together with the City of Newport and our community partners, we’re working to ensure our beloved ballpark will be here for generations to come...

Newport Gulls Coaching Staff #24 Al Leyva (Manager) Manager Al Leyva returns for his fifth season with the Newport Gulls in 2016, and will be the team’s first new head coach since his friend Mike Coombs took the reigns in 2005. Leyva has nine years of experience in the NECBL as a manager and assistant coach with three different organizations, and previously served for four seasons in Newport as the team’s Hitting and 3rd Base coach - from 2011-2013, and 2015 - areas he will continue to coach in as manager. Leyva was also the long-time head coach at Damien High School in California. Under Leyva’s guidance, the Gulls led the NECBL in runs scored, doubles, on-base percentage (.422) and ranked second in batting average (.313) and slugging percentage (.503) in 2012, and were an offensive force again in 2013. In 2015, the Gulls offense led the league in batting average, runs scored, doubles, RBI, total bases, walks, on-base percentage, and slugging. After coaching stints at the high school and college level, Leyva began his NECBL coaching career as the field manager of the Middletown Giants in 2003, leading them to the playoffs in his first season at the helm. In 2004 and 2005, Leyva served as an assistant coach with the Manchester Silkworms, making playoff appearances in both seasons. In 2006, Leyva made his professional coaching debut with the Chicago White Sox rookie ball team in Bristol, Tennessee. Leyva served as an assistant coach to his brother Nick Leyva, who is currently a first base coach with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2007, Leyva returned to the NECBL as manager of the North Adams SteepleCats, taking them into the first round of the playoffs against the Newport Gulls, losing the series two games to none. In 2008, he returned as manager of the Manchester Silkworms, taking them into the first round of the playoffs against the Gulls, also losing in two games. The Gulls were the eventual division champions in both years. In his three prior seasons as an NECBL manager, Leyva owns a combined record of 57-67, including 18-23 with Middletown, 23-19 in North Adams, and 16-25 with Manchester - a .460 overall winning percentage, with a 1-6 postseason record. Leyva resides in Chino, California with his wife Connie, who was elected to the California State Senate in 2014, and their twin daughters, Allie and Jessie. Leyva had taken the 2014 summer off, leaving hitting and 3rd Base coaching duties in the capable hands of his friend (and fellow Californian) Coach Ty De Trinidad.

#33 Darryl Morhardt (Pitching Coach) Pitching Coach Darryl Morhardt joins the Newport Gulls staff for the 2016 season, bringing nearly two decades of experience coaching in the NECBL with him. He is taking the place of Kevin Long, Newport’s pitching coach from 20112015, who is taking the summer off for personal reasons. Morhardt’s experience in the NECBL dates back to 1997, when he joined the Torrington Twisters staff as their pitching coach, a title he woud retain through the 2006 season. In 2008, he was named the manager of the Holyoke Blue Sox - later known as the Valley Blue Sox - and served in that capcity through 2014. Beyond the NECBL, the Winsted, Connecticut native has coached in various roles for the University of Hartford, Gateway Community College, Western Connecticut State, Marietta College, The George Washington University, and Fairleigh Dickinson University. While serving as pitching coach at Marietta, the team made three Division III World Series appearances, including finishes as national runner-up in 2001 and 2002. A graduate of Coastal Carolina University, Morhardt played professionally from 1985-87, including a season with the Atlanta Braves Class A affiliate. Among his numerous roles in baseball, he has also worked as a scout, including time with the New York Mets as an associate scout from 1997-2002. Morhardt’s father, Moe, played Major League Baseball for the Chicago Cubs from 1961-62, and was head coach of the NECBL’s Danbury Westerners from 1998-2004.

#4 Eric Degre (Defensive and First Base Coach) Assistant Coach Eric Degre joins the Newport Gulls coaching staff in 2016 as the team’s Defensive and First Base Coach. An assistant principal and athletic director at Lake Region Union High School in Vermont, Degre is in his seventh season as head coach of the school’s varsity baseball team. In 2015, he coached against the Gulls as an assistant coach with the NECBL Northern Division’s North Adams SteepleCats.A resident of Orleans, Vermont, Degre was head coach at North County Union High School in - coincidentally - Newport, Vermont, for 16 years. “Being able to coach in the league in North Adams last year was great,” Degre said, “but being able to come down to Newport this summer is a dream come true.” A retired fire chief, Degre is also a motivational speaker, and has spent numerous summers working baseball camps across the country, including at Vanderbilt, Clemson, and Tennessee.

Ten Memorable Moments in Newport Gulls History (1) Before moving to Newport in 2001, the Rhode Island Gulls, as they were called for the 1999 and 2000 seasons, played at Cranston Stadium in Cranston, R.I. The 2000 club lost to the Keene Swampbats in the NECBL Championship Series, but the Newport Gulls would get revenge by defeating Keene in the finals in 2001 and 2002. Keene would return the favor in 2013, defeating Newport in Game Three at Cardines Field in yet another rematch. (2) Gull Hall of Famer Rafael Lara played all nine positions in a 9-inning game vs. the Mill City All-Americans on July 29, 2002. He earned credit for the Gulls 5-4 win while on the pitcher’s mound in the 7th inning. (3) The Gulls have one former player in the NECBL Hall of Fame: 2003 catcher Chris Iannetta, who played for the Colorado Rockies from 2006-2011 and now plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Iannetta’s younger brother, Matt, played for Newport from 2006-2007. (4) The Gulls, Cardines Field and the City of Newport have hosted the NECBL All-Star Game twice: in 2005, and again in 2010. (5) On July 1, 2005, four Gulls pitchers combined for a near-perfect no-hitter at Rogers Park in Danbury, Conn., in a 5-0 win. SP Jeremy Hall walked Danbury’s Matt Teale to start the game and allowed him to reach second on a throwing error, but combined with Danny Otero, who pitched five innings, Josh Lairsey and Travis Webb, who each pitched one, to retire the next 27 Westerners in order. (6) Gulls 2B Jeff Miller turned an unassisted triple play - a feat rarer than a perfect game - at Cardines Field in the first inning of Game One of the 2005 NECBL Championship Series versus the Vermont Mountaineers on August 8, 2005. (7) On June 8, 2006, the Gulls, in their home opener vs. the Pittsfield Dukes, kicked off the NECBL season by becoming the first team in league history to provide online video streaming of games. The game went into the bottom of the 10th inning tied at 1-1, until Scott Brown, returning from the 2005 championship team, hit a walk-off home run over the fence in right field.Video coverage of the 10th inning and postgame interview with Brown won the Gulls volunteer broadcast crew - run by Nick and Tom Lima, and the Tiverton Tigers TV Crew - the PEG Award for Best Sports Program in Rhode Island. (8) On July 21, 2006, the Gulls defeated the North Adams SteepleCats, 5-0, at Cardines Field. SP Brandon McKerney kept them hitless through 5 and 2/3 innings before a blister on his finger ended his outing. Paul Nardozzi pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball before Mike Lynn closed out the ninth. The three pitchers combined for a no-hitter. (9) Gulls SP Chase Reid struck out an NECBL-record 19 Torrington Twisters at Cardines Field on July 4, 2008. The Gulls won, 6-1, as Reid scattered five hits and walked none. (10) 2010 SP Mark Appel out of Stanford University was drafted in the 1st Round, 8th overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2012, but opted to return to school for his senior year. In June 2013, he was drafted in the 1st Round, 1st overall pick by the Houston Astros, receiving a reported $6.35 million signing bonus. He is currently playing for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the AAA affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies

Log on to www.newportgulls.com to watch the Gulls on the road, and when you can’t make it to Cardines, tune in starting at 6:05 p.m. for the league’s only 30-minute pregame show, featuring interviews with coaches, staff, players and special guests. The Gulls production team, lead for a 13th season by Executive Producer Tom Lima, alongside fifth-year Co-Executive Producer Shannon Carlson, features six cameras, professional graphics, instant replay, a 20-minute postgame report and more, all to bring Cardines Field into your home - live on your computer! You can email the broadcast with feedback any time at media@newportgulls.com. To order DVD copies of any Gulls home game, email Tom Lima at broadcast@newportgulls.com. The Newport Gulls Broadcast Operations Team thanks you for your support!
