Our mission is to provide a level of community involvement and family entertainment to children and adults alike, that is second to none in New England. June 2018 Newport Gulls Fans, On behalf of the Newport Gulls we would like to welcome you to Cardines Field as we begin our 18th season in the City by the Sea. Since the Gulls arrival in 2001 we have had great success on and off the field. On the field, the Gulls have had the best win â&#x20AC;&#x201C; loss record in the NECBL over that period of time, the Gulls have had the highest attendance and have the most NECBL Championships with six. The Gulls have made it to the championship series in 11 of 17 years. In 2012 the Gulls were named the Number #1 team in the country by Perfect Game. The Gulls have won numerous community and regional awards, have had a documentary aired on Cox Cable, and have been recognized in books and magazines. However, what makes us most proud is the Gulls have given back over a million dollars in value to our community through summer camp scholarships, ticket giveaways, donation baskets in support of silent auctions, college scholarships, and cash donations. We have supported efforts to fight all forms of cancer, ALS, and help those in need. Our FANantic About Reading Program brings our players into every elementary classroom on the island in support of summer reading, and our summer camps allow young kids to learn the game of baseball from the players and coaches in each community. We are excited for another summer of baseball, family entertainment, and bringing our community together. None of our success is possible without the support of so many; sponsors, host families, volunteers, coaches, players, interns, and loyal fans. We are so blessed to have so many sponsors who have provided the life blood for the operation to survive and succeed. We are so blessed to have so many host families who form the foundation of this organization and take our players into their homes each summer. We are so blessed to have so many volunteers; our backbone to form the operational strength that has made the Gulls the family entertainment venue in Newport County. We are so blessed to have so many interns who provide the energy and pride to learn and enhance our brand in our community. We are so blessed to have such great coaches and players who understand what it means to be a Gull and wear our uniform with pride, commitment and character. We are so blessed to have the best fan base in summer college baseball, filling Cardines every night to support their team. Cardines Field: A piece of baseball history since 1908 Cardines Field, the home of the Newport Gulls has a rich history involving the great American pastime. The parcel of land on which Cardines sits, formerly known as “The Basin”, had been used in the 1800’s as a source of water for the steam locomotives until the area residents complained about the stagnant water. In 1908, a small group of New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad employees cleared enough away for a diamond to play host to a six-team league. In 1919, the railroad granted permission to the oldest established amateur league in the United States, known as the George S. Donnelly Sunset League which still plays today - 96 seasons later. Between 1925 and 1936, the City of Newport leased the field for $1 per year. Small wooden bleachers and a backstop were added since no permanent improvements could be made to the privately owned parcel of land. In 1936, the City of Newport purchased the field and quickly made it one of the finest fields in America. Cardines is a cousin of other notable fields of that era, Ebbetts, Fenway and Wrigley all boasted a stone facade and wooden bleachers with unique outfield angles that made players famous in their ability to play the caroms. By the 1980’s, Cardines Field was in danger of being torn down to make room for a parking lot to support the successful tourist industry in Newport. A local group led by Ron MacDonald, raised the funds necessary to repair the aging facility and made significant improvements to the field. Due to the efforts of Mr. MacDonald, the City of Newport passed a resolution that will keep Cardines Field as an historic landmark in Newport history. Today, the “Friends of Cardines Foundation” with support from the Aletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust and the City of Newport work hard each year to improve the historic landmark, which, in 2001 saw the addition of a new lighting system.The Newport Gulls contributed with a modern new concession stand and in the past two years the parks and recreation department completed the renovation of the bathroom, bleachers and locker room facilities. Over the years many baseball legends have graced Cardines Field, including Jimmy Foxx, Larry Doby, Lou Gorman and Satchel Paige who sat in a rocking chair between the hockey style dugouts thinking up new names for his many pitches. Folklore has it that Babe Ruth once toed the batters box and rubber here at Cardines.... One thing is for sure though,

the Newport Gulls have revived the treasure, leading the NECBL in attendance for the third straight year averaging an unprecedented 50,000 fans per season and contributing to Cardines being named among the top five places to play in Summer College Baseball by Baseball America magazine. After 15 years of unprecedented success, the Newport Gulls are widely considered the premier organization in summer collegiate baseball, and a huge part of that is because the Gulls have historic Cardines Field to call home. Together with the City of Newport and our community partners, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re working to ensure our beloved ballpark will be here for generations to come...

The NECBL lost one of the most instrumental figures in league history in December after co-founder Joseph Consentino passed away. Consentino, who was inducted into the NECBL Hall of Fame in 2011, was a true visionary who co-founded the NECBL in 1993 with former National League MVP George Foster. He envisioned a league that would bridge the gap between the Cape Cod Baseball League and the then-New York-based ACBL. His goal was to give student-athletes from the New England region a better chance to have their talents recognized by MLB scouts, and he did just that. Consentino was a pioneer in helping the league grow to what it is today, one that has sent nearly 150 alums to the Major League Baseball (MLB) ranks and from five teams to 13 in all six New England states. More importantly, Consentino’s vision has led to baseball becoming an integral part of each of those communities night in and night out each summer. A former standout for St. John’s, Consentino played in the Boston Red Sox system in 1958. He was a longtime Ridgefield, Connecticut, resident, where he established and coached the Ridgefield Nighthawk Travel Team, as well as the American Legion Baseball program. He also was an award-winning TV film producer/ director and the recipient of three television EMMY Awards, an Academy Award “Short Film” nomination, the Toronto HOT DOCS Award and numerous TELLY and CABLE ACE television documentary awards. 11

Newport Gulls Coaching Staff #11 Mike Coombs (Manager) After two seasons away from the City-by-the-Sea, Mike Coombs, the most successful coach in New England Collegiate Baseball League history, will return for his 12th season as manager of the 2018 team. Coombs, who led the Gulls to four NECBL titles during his 11-year tenure as skipper, will once again step through the gates of historic Cardines Field this summer. Coombs took over as field manager four games in to the 2005 season and the rest is history. He owns a career regular-season record of 308-153, a .668 winning percentage, and guided the Gulls to four NECBL titles (2005, 2009, 2012 and 2014) during his tenure. Under Coombs, the Newport Gulls became the winningest franchise in league history, and in 2012 were ranked as the overall No. 1 summer collegiate team nationally by Perfect Game USA. Coombs also owns a 44-17 all-time postseason record (a .721 winning percentage), giving him an NECBL-best 352-170 overall win-loss record as manager, a .674 winning percentage through 522 games. The ever-colorful Coach Coombs has an extensive background in baseball, playing as a catcher and outfielder for Seminole Community College, in the Shenandoah Valley Collegiate League and professionally for the Detroit Tigers organization. He has coached at the high school, collegiate and professional levels, including as a pitching coach with the University of South Florida and the Milwaukee Brewers organization. A former player for Florida Southern College, later, as a coach with the team, Coombs won the national championship in 1981 and 1985. “The way people treat me in Newport is wonderful,” said Coombs. “I couldn’t have asked for a better second home than Newport. I always loved coming back for that reason.The baseball is great; the players and coaches are great. Being a part of the Newport Gulls family is something special.” During his first three seasons in Newport, Coombs wore uniform number 25. Afterwards, he wore number 11. “The Aquidneck Island community, our organization, and the entire Gulls family are so excited that Mike Coombs is returning to manage the Gulls in 2018,” said team President and General Manager Chuck Paiva. “Coach Coombs has a special, unique style that just works so well in summer college baseball. He connects with players, he is loved by the fans, and he understands the game on such a high level.We are so excited to have Coach Coombs return to Newport.”

#13 Kevin Winterrowd (Pitching Coach) Kevin Winterrowd is back for a second season as the Gulls Pitching Coach, reuniting with Mike Coombs; the two coached together in 2010, Winterrowd was an assistant coach on the 10’ Gulls staff, instructing the team’s hitters and infielders along with coaching third base. The Yukon, OK, native is thrilled to be a part of the Gulls organization once again. “Newport has an atmosphere rivaled by few and it starts with leadership,” Winterrrowd said. “The organization has been run well since the beginning.” As the manager of the Keene Swamp Bats during the 2013 season, he guided the team to its fourth New England Collegiate Baseball League title and was named the NECBL Manager of the Year. Previously,Winterrowd was the manager of the North Adams Steeple Cats during the 2002 and 2003 campaigns after serving as an assistant coach of the Swamp Bats in 2001. Throughout his time developing talent in college baseball Winterrowd has coached over 100 former players to be drafted or sign professional contracts. Winterrowd was a national scout for USA Baseball in Cary, NC, where he was responsible for evaluating and selecting players for the 17U National Development Program and National Team Identification Series. Winterrowd on returning as the Gulls Pitching Coach, “ I enjoy developing the kids in a competitive environment as my goal is to send them back to school as better ballplayers than we got them.”

#4 Greg Grall (Hitting Coach) Grall served as Manager Mike Coombs’ Hitting Coach during the 2006 NECBL Season and returns in the same capacity for 2018. Grall helped lead Newport to 32 wins in 2006, which is still the most by any franchise in an NECBL season. In that same season, Grall’s hitters littered the league-leaderboard as the 2006 NECBL MVP Jim Murphy (Washington St.) hit .358 with 40 RBI and 94 Total Bases while Matt Bouchard (Georgetown) scored 29 runs and Chris Dominguez (Louisville) hit 11 home runs, pacing all NECBL hitters. Coach Grall, a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was the Boston Red Sox Bullpen Coach in 2012 and has also worked with Cy Young Winner Jake Arrietta, All-Star Pitchers Mark Melancon, Andrew Miller, and B.J. Ryan, as well as many other notable Major Leaguers during career. In addition to his work in the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles, and Cincinnati Reds organizations, Grall was the Hitting and 3rd Base Coach for South Africa in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. This was not Grall’s only experience in the international ranks as he has also completed consulting assignments with Greece, Costa Rica, and the Netherlands.

#11 Xander Jones (Assistant Coach) Xander Jones is entering his second season as an assistant coach for the Gulls in 2018. Jones predominantly assists in the development of the pitching staff, but his current position as the varsity head coach for St. George’s School in Middletown, RI, gives Jones experience in all facets of the game. In 2014, Jones was an assistant coach for the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. As an undergraduate at Ohio Wesleyan University, Jones was a three-sport athlete in baseball, football and soccer. During the 2007 season, Jones was named to the All-North Coast Athletic Conference Second Team as a pitcher for posting a 7–2 record and 4.25 ERA over 82.2 innings thrown. In 2008, Jones was named an All-NCAC Honorable Mention recipient and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history. Jones would eventually receive a master’s in athletic administration from Ohio University in 2016.

Every summer, Newport Gulls Baseball conducts several Youth Summer Camps at locations around Aquidneck Island.These camps are designed for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 12. Our summer camps have become very popular, averaging almost 100 participants per session. Many of our campers come from out-of-state for the opportunity to attend a Gulls camp. The camps are run by the Newport Gulls coaching staff and players, and are designed to teach the fundamentals of baseball specific to the age group and/or skill level involved. After hours of skill-specific drills and instruction, camp participants take part in contests and live game play to show off their skills, with a chance to win awards for different competitions. Our 9th Annual Mark Weed Memorial Camp will be held at Newport’s Wellington Field in Mark’s honor from July 3-6. The camp was named in honor of Mark, who was an avid supporter of youth athletics on Aquidneck Island. At his request, a foundation was set up to send children from the Island to our summer camps free of charge. All participants of the Mark Weed Memorial Camp will attend the Gulls game scheduled in his honor on Friday, July 20 for a pregame ceremony in his memory. The cost of Camp is $90, which includes instruction, a Gulls T-shirt, and Gulls game tickets. Camp takes place four days per week, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to Noon. In his first weekend start, Bates struck out a career-high nine batters against conference foe Houston over 6.1 innings of work. He followed this impressive start by tossing another six innings in his very next outing; a win against East Tennessee State in which Bates struck out four, surrendering four hits and one earned run. Bates attended Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando, Florida where he was given the team’s Cy Young Award after his junior and senior seasons. Bates set the school record for strikeouts in a game with 16 and pitched back-to-back no-hitters as a junior. Bates completed his senior season going 9-1, helping Bishop Moore to a 5A state runner up finish while holding a 1.21 era, and striking out 112 strikeouts in 70 innings pitched. Bates is majoring in Business at Tulane.

The best game of Britton’s freshman regular season came against Moorehead State on 3/6. He went three-for-three, with a double, homerun, and two RBI. Before attending the University of Louisville, Britton played for Indiana Bulls Baseball, along with Gulls teammate Kody Hoese from Tulane University. Britton was a four-year letter winner at Batesville High School in his hometown of Batesville, IN In his senior year, Britton finished with a .533 batting average, six home runs, 16 doubles, 27 RBI, and 41 runs scored. He was named the 2017 District Player of the Year as well as a member of the All-Midwest Region Team. Perfect Game ranked Britton the No. 4 player and No. 1 catcher in Indiana, in addition to being named a 2017 Rawlings Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American. Britton is a Sports Administration major whose favorite team is the Cincinnati Reds.

He threw a career- high 7.1 innings against Butler on 5/17, earning the win after surrendering just three runs. Burke is able to command all of his pitches for strikes, walking only 10 batters while striking out 23 in 37.2 innings pitched. Last summer, Burke played for the Albany Dutchmen of the Perfect Game League, finishing the year with a 2.36 ERA in 26.2 innings with 22 strikeouts, 4 walks and 23 hits allowed. Jeremiah comes from Delmar, New York, and played for the La Salle Institute in Troy, New York. He was a two-year starter and senior captain that received Gold and Silver Honors (Honor Roll three out of four years) while at the La Salle Institute.

Cloonan delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give Miami an 8-7 win against Bethune-Cookman on 5/5 and also made ESPN’s SportCenter Top 10 for a miraculous catch during Miami’s 15 inning contest on 3/3 versus Maine. Just as he did at Miami, Cloonan made a splash as a freshman while attending Westminster Christian School, batting .355 and garnering Rookie of the Year honors. As a senior captain, Cloonan batted .406, while posting a 2.59 ERA, with 34 strikeouts in 24.1 innings on the mound. His performance earned 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game All-American Honorable Mention Honors, a Florida Region All-High School Senior First Team selection, and the Westminster Christian Slugger Award. Cloonan intends to be a Business Major.

On the year, Enright threw 49.2 innings while tallying 46 strikeouts with just 15 walks. One of his best outings came on Mar. 4 versus Central Michigan. Enright gave up just one hit and no runs in 4.1 innings out of the bullpen while collecting seven strikeouts. Enright will be a valuable member of the Gulls pitching staff this summer, able to come out of the bullpen both in long relief and in a closers role in addition to having the ability to start games. Enright’s selection in the 19th round of the MLB Draft is the highest among players on the 2018 Gulls roster.

One of Jack’s best games came against Rider on April 8 when he went three-for-four with a home run, five RBI, and three runs scored. He ended the year with 31 hits along with 16 RBI’s Last summer Mangrum played for the Wisconsin Woodchuck’s of the Northwoods league. Mattison won a Class D New York State Chamionship as an eigth grader and also as a senior at Fort Ann High School in New York. He was named First Team All-State his junior year at Fort Ann. Mattison skills extend beyond the field however. As a basketball player in high school he broke the school record for both point (53) and rebounds (29) in a game.

Out of his 21 hits this spring, he tallied three doubles and two homeruns while driving in 14 baserunners. In previous summers, Mazza has played in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, the Futures League, and the Cape Cod League. He finds himself back in the NECBL this summer to help provide depth behind the plate for Newport.

He led the NESCAC this past spring with 57 strikeouts and a 9.68 K/9 after ranking second in the league with 56 in 2017. McCaffrey’s dominance on April 7 against conference rival Middlebury earned him NESCAC Pitcher of the Week honors. That game, he threw a 6.0 inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts in Wesleyan’s 1—0 win. This past summer McCaffrey pitched for the Brockton Rox in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. In 30.2 regular season innings on the mound, McCaffrey held an impressive 1.46 ERA while striking out 39 batters. This past spring, he started in 49 games for the Cougars and ranked third on his team with a .277 average in 184 at-bats. Out of his 51 hits, Plew tallied 10 doubles, three triples, and a homerun. His 35 walks were the most on his team, helping him to a second-best .407 on-base percentage. One of his best games as a sophomore came back on May 12. Plew recorded three hits, two RBI, and a double to help give the Cougars an 8—4 win. In the summer of 2017, Plew appeared in 43 games for the Yakima Valley Pippins of the West Coast League. In 156 at-bats, Plew tallied 46 hits, including three doubles, a triple, and three homeruns. His 24 RBI and .295 average helped him earn a spot on the West Coast League South All-Star team.

He just finished a spectacular twoyear career at Seminole State College (Seminole, OK) and will become a University of Kentucky Wildcat in the Fall. Reed led all of the NJCAA in home runs during 2017 (26) and earned Second Team All- American Honors. His 18 long balls this past season was good for 12th nationally. Not only does Reed demonstrate great power but he has shown he can hit for average and drive in runs in other ways than driving the ball over the wall. He held a .384 and .356 average in 2017 & 2018 respectfully while driving in 60 rbi as a freshman and 76 this past spring. The Roff, OK native was a member of the Wisconsin Woodchucks of the Northwoods League last summer, hitting three home runs and 12 RBI in 24 games played.

His .338 batting average was second on the team while the big-lefty’s nine home runs tied for second among Bulldog hitters during the regular season. Sasser’s most impressive performance came on May 3 against the University of Missouri when he went four-for-five with three home runs and six RBI. The three round- trippers is a new University of Georgia record. That weekend series consisted of Sasser going 7-13 with 10 rbi and hitting four balls over the outfield fence. His stellar weekend earned National Player of the Week and SEC Player of the Week honors. Prior to the 2018 SEC Tournament, Sasser was named a Second Team All- SEC performer. He is a student of the game, studying opposing pitchers scouting reports and film prior to facing them; “Usually my first at-bat of the game, I’ll go up there looking for a fastball that I can drive. And if his tendencies are learning toward off-speed pitches early in the count to lefties, or runners in scoring position with an open base, then I may sometimes, occasionally sit on an off-speed pitch that I can drive and take a fastball first pitch.”

In his freshman season, Smith held a 3—2 record in 11 starts, second-most on the team. In the process, he garnered a 3.35 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 37.2 innings-pitched. As a senior at Midlothian High School, Smith threw two no-hitters and collected 100 strikeouts on his way to a school-record of a 0.44 ERA with only eight hits allowed. His dominance earned him a Rawlings-Perfect Game Second-Team All-American and Texas – All-Region First-Team honors. In total, Smith was a three-time District Pitcher of the Year in Texas and a two-time Perfect Game Underclassman All-American.

Stiehl governed UMass Lowell on May 1st, pitching 7.0 scoreless innings and striking out six against. Command of Stiehls fastball is key. It reaches the upper 80s and lower 90s, setting up a the late-breaking curveball that keeps hitters off balance. Prior to playing at Northeastern, Stiehl received recognition as an Under Armour Pre-Season All-American while reigning at Manchester High School in Connecticut and completing a prep year at Cheshire Academy.

Through Bryant’s 2017 campaign he appeared a team high 26 times earning himself 2 wins and 1 save. In his sophomore year at Bryant he emerged as one of the region’s top relievers getting named to the Second Team ALL-NEC. On May 11th Wrighter pitched a career high 4.1 innings in Bryant’s 17 inning game against Sacred Heart. He did not allow a run throughout those 4.1 innings. Before Wrighter became a Bulldog he went to Windsor Central High School where he was a four time division all-star and lead the team in hitting in all four of his years.
