The Newport Gulls have goals that go beyond the field itself. Our mission is to provide a level of community involvement and family entertainment to children and adults alike, that is second to none in New England. It is because of our players, coaches and fans that we have been able to do just that. Being a non-profit organization, none of this is possible without the many volunteers, staff, host families and businesses in our communities that support us. June 2019 Newport Gulls Fans, On behalf of the Newport Gulls we would like to welcome you to Cardines Field as we begin our 19th season in the City by the Sea. Since the Gulls arrival in 2001 we have had great success on and off the field. On the field, the Gulls have had the best won – loss record in the NECBL over that period of time, and the Gulls have had the highest attendance and have the most NECBL Championships with six. The Gulls have made it to the championship series in 11 of 18 years. In 2012 the Gulls were named the Number #1 team in the country by Perfect Game. The Gulls have won numerous community and regional awards, have had a documentary aired on Cox Cable, and have been recognized in books and magazines. However, what makes us most proud is the Gulls have given back over a million dollars in value to our community through summer camp scholarships, ticket giveaways, donation baskets in support of silent auctions, college scholarships, and cash donations. We have supported efforts to fight all forms of cancer, ALS, and help those in need. Our FANantic About Reading Program brings our players into every elementary classroom on the island in support of summer reading, and our summer camps allow young kids to learn the game of baseball from the players and coaches in each community. This year the Gulls won the Excellence in Business Award from the Chamber of Commerce and was recently named Best Family Entertainment in Newport County by the Newport Life Magazine. The Gulls also inducted its 5th Hall of Fame Class in February honoring those players and volunteers who have made an impact on the history of the team since our humble beginning. We are excited for another summer of baseball, family entertainment, and bringing our community together. None of our success is possible without the support of so many; sponsors, host families, volunteers, coaches, players, interns, and loyal fans. We are so blessed to have the best fan base in summer college baseball, filling Cardines every night to support their team. Lastly, we are so blessed to have such a great host city and the opportunity to play at historic Cardines Field. On behalf of the Newport Gulls, we sincerely want to thank every single person who has contributed to our success, thank you. Thank you all for your loyalty and support. Sincerely,

Cardines Field: A piece of baseball history since 1908 Cardines Field, the home of the Newport Gulls has a rich history involving the great American pastime. The parcel of land on which Cardines sits, formerly known as “The Basin,” had been used in the 1800’s as a source of water for the steam locomotives until the area residents complained about the stagnant water. In 1908, a small group of New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad employees cleared enough away for a diamond to play host to a six-team league. In 1919, the railroad granted permission to the oldest established amateur league in the United States, known as the George S. Donnelly Sunset League which still plays today - 99 seasons later. Between 1925 and 1936, the City of Newport leased the field for $1 per year. In 1936, the Federal WPA constructed wooden bleachers, a backstop, fencing, and additional improvements in which some are still standing. That same year, the City of Newport purchased the field and quickly made it one of the finest fields in America. Cardines is a cousin of other notable fields of that era, Ebbetts, Fenway and Wrigley all boasting a stone facade and wooden bleachers with unique outfield angles that made players famous in their ability to play the caroms. By the 1980’s, Cardines Field was in danger of being torn down to make room for a parking lot to support the successful tourist industry in Newport. A local group led by Ron MacDonald (R&R Construction), raised the funds necessary to repair the aging facility and made significant improvements to the field. Due to the efforts of Mr. MacDonald, the City of Newport passed a resolution that will keep Cardines Field as an historic landmark in Newport history. Today, the “Friends of Cardines Foundation” with suppor t from the Aletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust and the City of Newport work hard each year to improve the historic landmark, which, in 2005 saw the addition of a new lighting system and 2018 a new playing surface. The Newport Gulls have contributed to the renovations by constructing a modern new concession stand, purchasing picnic area materials, baseball screens and batting cage, as well as painting the inside and outside of the stadium when needed. Over the years, many baseball legends have graced Cardines Field, including Jimmy Foxx, Larry Doby, Lou Gorman and Satchel Paige who sat in a rocking chair between the hockey style dugouts thinking up new names for his many pitches. Folklore has it that Babe Ruth
6
once toed the batters box and rubber at Cardines.... One thing is for sure though, together with the City of Newpor t, the Newport Gulls and their community partners, will continue to work to ensure the beloved ballpark will be there for generations to come.

Newport Gulls Hall Of Fame 2019 Ceremony
February 2- Gurney’s Newport Resort
Seven Newport Gulls Alumnus entered the Newport Gulls Hall of Fame on February 2, 2019. The Fifth Hall of Fame Class included five players: Ryan Chambers (Brigham- Young), Paul Nardozzi (Pittsburgh), Andrew Kittredge (Washington), Daniel Wright (Arkansas St.) and Jeff Melillo (Rutgers) as well as two longtime volunteers: Kristine Hendrickson (Gulls Director of Public Relations) and Robert Capodilupo (Gulls On-Field MC). “Every two years, the entire Gulls family gets together to honor contributors to the storied history of our organization, which makes this event special not only for me but for everyone involved,” said Newport Gulls General Manager Chuck Paiva. “Our host families, fans, sponsors, coaches, volunteers, and countless former players have made each of the five Hall of Fame inductions feel like true family reunions. Seeing so many familiar faces again while inducting six more outstanding gentlemen and the Hall’s first woman made for a truly special night” Ryan Chambers spent the summers of 2003 & 2004 in Newport while he was attending Brigham-Young University in Provo, Utah. Chambers finished his career with a regular season batting average of .298, 14 home runs and 14 doubles. The New England Collegiate Baseball League named Chambers to the All-NECBL First Team in 2004 and he was ultimately drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 2005 MLB Draft. In 2005, Paul Nardozzi set the Newport Gulls single-season strikeout record by fanning 66 opposing batters- a record that still exists. He won 11 games over the course of two seasons (2005 & 2006) in Newport and helped capture the Gulls’ third championship in 2005. Nardozzi pitched collegiately for the University of Pittsburgh and was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 31st Round of the 2007 MLB Draft. Andrew Kittredge was a 2009 NECBL All-Star, member of the All- NECBL Second Team, member of the 2009 NECBL Top 10 Prospect List, and Pitcher of the Week in Week 8 of the 2009 NECBL Season. The Spokane, WA native attended the University of Washington and won a total of six games in his one summer in Newport. Kittredge hurled a stellar seven innings of work in Game 1 of the NECBL Championship Series where he struck out 12 batters en route to the Gulls capturing their fourth Fay Vincent Cup. Kittredge was drafted in Round 45 of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners and he made his Major League Debut in July of 2017 for the Tampa Bay Rays. A member of both the 2011 & 2012 roster, Daniel Wright was named to the 2012 All- NECBL First Team and was the 2012 NECBL All-Star Game Starting Pitcher, all while leading the NECBL in wins (6) that summer.
10
Wright had a perfect 2-0 record in the 2012 playoffs as the Gulls took home the NECBL Championship and were given the #1 Overall Ranking in Summer Collegiate Baseball. The Cincinnati Reds selected Wright in the 10th Round of the 2013 MLB Draft and in May of 2016 he made his Major League debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jeff Melillo played collegiately in his home state of New Jersey at Rutgers University and spent two summers with the Newport Gulls- 2011 & 2012. He was the captain of the 2012 NECBL Championship and #1 Overall Team in the Country, a 2012 All- NECBL First Team performer, the NECBL’s 2012 Most Improved Player, a member of the 2012 NECBL All- Star Game team, a Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All- American and the nation’s Top Rising Senior. Jeff still holds the NECBL and Newport Gulls record for on-base percentage (.548), aided by a .404 batting average which took home the 2012 NECBL Batting Title. Director of Public Relations Kristine Hendrickson began assisting the Gulls in 2001. Hendrickson helped create and administer the many community programs in which the Gulls still run today, facilitated the Gulls internship program, led the team’s marketing efforts, and has planned and executed many team events including four Hall of Fame Ceremonies. Kristine is the first woman inducted into the Newport Gulls Hall of Fame. Robert Capodilupo, the Gulls On-Field Announcer from 2005-2010 is currently finishing his undergraduate degree at Harvard University. The On-Field Voice of the Gulls excited and entertained Gulls fans with help from his father Ted. On- Field games and antics are a staple at Newport Gulls games and Robert demonstrated unparalleled professionalism at a young age, setting the precedent for all Gulls On- Field Announcers since leaving his post. Over 260 current and former players, volunteers, interns, host families, sponsors, family, friends, and fans were on hand for the event, which doubled as a silent auction benefiting the team’s operations. Among those in attendance were the City of Newport’s new mayor, Jamie Bova, and state Rep. Marvin Abney, Chair of the House Committee on Finance. Representatives from other NECBL member organizations, including the Keene Swamp Bats (Keene, N.H.), Ocean State Waves (Wakefield, R.I.), and the league’s newest team, the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.), as well as the league’s President, John Derosa, joined in the festivities.

Newport Gulls Coaching Staff Kevin Winterrowd (Manager) Kevin Winterrowd has been promoted to manager of the 2019 Newport Gulls after serving as the team’s pitching coach the past two seasons. He will be heading a team seeking to capture a league-leading seventh championship in team history after not reaching the playoffs each of the past two seasons. Winterrowd is no stranger to Newport or the New England League. Since 2001, the Yukon, OK, native has been in and out of the league in multiple capacities, beginning as an assistant coach for the Keene Swamp Bats. He managed the North Adams Steeple Cats during the 2002 and 2003 campaigns and then joined the Newport Gulls in 2010. Winterrowd was an assistant coach for long-time manager Mike Coombs, instructing the team’s hitters and infielders along with coaching third base. Winterrowd’s most recent stint at the helm of a New England League franchise came in 2013 when he led the Keene Swamp Bats to their fourth league title. Keene recorded 27 regular season wins under his guidance en route to the being named NECBL Manager of the Year. Winterrowd has be quoted as stating: “Newport has an atmosphere rivaled by few and it starts with leadership. The organization has been run well since the beginning, I’m honored to be a part of it.” Throughout his time developing talent in college baseball,Winterrowd has coached 100 former players that have either been drafted or signed professional contracts. He has also been a national scout for USA Baseball in Cary, NC, where he was responsible for evaluating and selecting players for the 17U National Development Program and National Team Identification Series. “I enjoy developing the kids in a competitive environment. My goal is to send them back to school as better ballplayers than we got them.” Jack Patterson (Bryant University) pitched for Wintterrowd in 2017 and is currently in the Chicago Cubs organization; “Coach Rowd’ is going to do great because of his ability to keep us players focused and to not overthink.” Patterson went on to say, “I remember I wasn’t even on my ride back home after the season and I received a lengthy text about the season stating we will always share a bond as members of the Gulls Family, and to let him know if there was anything he could ever do for me- that stuck with me and spoke to his sincere desire to see his guys succeed”. “We are excited to have Kevin take on this role. He knows the league, he knows Newport, and he knows how to win. The team is ready to get back to the championship and Coach Winterrowd is a great man to help us do so.”- Newport Gulls General Manager Chuck Paiva

Greg Zackrison (Pitching Coach) Greg Zackrison brings with him ample coaching experience in the NECBL and overall baseball knowledge. Zackrison’s most recent summer baseball experience was as Field Manager of NECBL division-foe Plymouth Pilgrims, a post he held from 2013-2018. He was named the 2014 NECBL Manager of the Year after guiding the Pilgrims to a Southern Division Title, finishing that season with a 34-13 record. The NECBL is not the only stop for Zackrison in summer collegiate baseball. He led the Oneonta Outlaws of the New York Collegiate Baseball League from 2010 to 2012, winning the NYCBL Championship in his second season, garnering 2011 NYCBL Manager of the Year honors. He has also helped the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League win a league championship in 2008 while serving as an assistant coach. Prior to Bridgewater State, Coach Zackrison was the Pitching Coach for Division II Stonehill College (North Easton, MA). His pitching staff’s 2.50 ERA was tops in the Northeast 10 Conference and ranked third nationally throughout Division II. Zackrison joined Stonehill’s staff after experiencing tremendous success while at Massasoit Community College (Brockton, MA). Zackrison was Massasoit’s Associate Head Coach helping NJCAA Hall of Famer Tom Frizzell from 2003-2013. The Warriors of MCC went 299-176-3 (.629), including four New England Regional XXI Championships, a 2010 Massachusetts State NJCAA Championship and a 2013 MCCAC Championship. He coached 12 All- Americans, including four First Team selections, and 57 All- Region student-athletes.
James Sauro (Hitting Coach) James Sauro joins the Newport Gulls as the team’s Hitting Coach in 2019 after having spent the past six seasons with in-state rival Ocean State Waves. Sauro brings a wealth of knowledge with him to an already experienced staff of Winterrowd and Zackrison. “Anytime you can get a Coach who is committed to the game of baseball and understands his craft well and can teach that craft to aspiring professional athletes, it is a win for everyone”, said Newport Gulls President & General Manager Chuck Paiva.
Sauro has been the Head Coach of South Kingston High School (South Kingston, RI) since 1997, leading the Rebels to a Rhode Island State Championship victory in 2018- the school’s first since 2002. In addition to his familiarity with the NECBL, he is extremely familiar with championships as those same South Kingston Rebels reached McCoy Stadium for the 2016 and 2017 State Championship games before taking home the title last spring. Sauro, who first joined the Ocean State Waves as an Assistant Coach, also captured back-to-back Southern Division Titles as the club’s Field Manager in 2017 and 2018. During this span Sauro amassed a 56-32 record- a .636 winning percentage. The Waves were ranked as Summer Collegiate Baseball’s No. 1 Overall Team during the 2017 Season under Sauro’s leadership. Sauro played collegiately for the University of Rhode Island and still remains in the top five all-time in career batting average. Sauro on coaching in the NECBL: “It is always very exciting to get to coach some of the best baseball players in the country!”
