MAKING PAYROLL EASY Payroll and PAYE is guaranteed to give small business owners the biggest headache, and unlike VAT, not just once a quarter. For most, as soon as you have a single employee you’ll need to calculate and deduct Income Tax, NI and normally pension contributions every time you pay them and then make an online return to HMRC showing details of their pay and deductions. You’ll also need to produce payslips. This applies to directors as well and even if you take dividends as a business owner you should take a salary to enable you to get credits for National Insurance so you build up entitlement to the State pension. If you don’t comply with HMRC’s detailed and hard-to-understand complex payroll rules the fines will come thick and fast. Speak to us without cost or obligation about how we can help you make your business life easier.

Adam Sadler – aka Adam Hussain, Benny Blanco and Short Term

Member of Goldie Lookin Chain Newport’s very own comedic rap crew.

This month newport vision met with Adam Sadler – aka Adam Hussain, Benny Blanko, Short Term amongst others, from Newport’s very own comedic rap crew Goldie Looking Chain. We had some real giggles, not all suitable to share here, but having listened to their lyrics which are known for being humorous, controversial and often explicit, what else would you expect! So, Adam why all the different names? It’s like Eminem, he has 3 different names; Marshal Mathers, Slim Shady - You gotta have a name to be in the game. So, what have GLC been up to lately? We’re still making music but you know how it is, life gets in the way, family kids etc but we’re still going strong and we’ve been busy in the studio lately, our new album, Fear of a Welsh Planet, is due out in October. We aim to release one album a year, we’ve still got lots of bullets in the chamber to fire yet.

12 newport vision August 2017

Tell us how GLC came about? Back in 2000 - I had a crap red ford fiesta - it only had a radio; no tape deck or CD player. I used to drive round with my boom box in the back which run off batteries. Eggsy gave me a rap tape he’d made. We started off as a secret gang making songs whilst smoking, then we burnt a load of CDs and handed them out randomly to people. It was when the internet was just starting out. People started talking and we just got more and more traction so decided to do a gig in Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff. Most of us had never been on stage before people went mad for it! Then we went to Bristol and got a manager.

Why do you think GLC have been so successful rapping about Newport? This is our culture, we’re not trying to be something else. This is where it’s at! In the USA they rap about the women and the bling – In Newport we rap about cheese n chips, medieval ships and 10p crisps. You gotta rap about what you know. As our saying goes – ‘You knows it!’. Are your biggest fans here in Newport? We have fans all over the world. After we got signed we set tour dates in Japan, America and all over Europe. Bristol is good but Scotland is nuts!! They have Ned culture there which is similar to our Chav culture - but we’re not chavs we’re Clarts.

Tell us about other jobs you’ve had? I used to work in Construction before the band, although I say that loosely. I was a labourer carrying crap around, getting covered in dirt mostly. I’ve worked at the Celtic Manor, I used to sell drinks on golf buggies. We used to have wacky races on the course until my mate got caught. Terry Matthews never found out – unless he’s reading this now of course. I used to work in BeWise too.

worry about the money - just enjoy yourself. If it takes too long to write, chuck it in the bin, its over cooked. Good songs write themselves and just jump out. If it takes too long likelihood is it’s rubbish.

Do you have a moto in life? It’s nice to be important but more important to be nice – Eggsy told me that one. Most things he says are rubbish but I do live by that one.

Where do you like to hang out in Newport? Baileys pub, Baneswell - I love sport and it’s a good ruff and tumble boozer. We’ve got some decent new places popping up which is nice to have and sadly some good things have come to an end but it makes you appreciate what we had. Times change but we shouldn’t be scared of that.

Album – Fear of a Welsh Planet out this October, stay tuned for updates and upcoming gigs on this summer. For local gigs facebook and twitter. @adamhussainglc

B

You seem a bit of a joker or is that just your character? I’m not sure, I can’t really tell the difference any more. When you’re from Newport it’s part of our culture to be streetwise and be up for the crack, we can’t hide our background. I am a little sensible and quite private in my personal life. I guess it’s like having an outlet.

So what’s next for GLC? Things change, some members have left, some have joined, but no one has died fortunately. I think we’ll start GLC Juniors and get them to do the rap and reinvent ourselves through the kids, send them off on tour then sit back and reap the rewards. A kind of mentoring programme for the next generation. You see there are many links in a Goldie Looking Chain, it’s a full circle, there are no breaks to a chain, it goes on and on and on sort of thing. Profound. So what advice would you give to someone hoping to get in to the music industry? Don’t do it for money, do it for the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle but don’t newport vision August 2017 13

Have an event to attend and feel like your skin is lacking a bit of oomph 7 steps to prep your skin for a red carpet event…..

01

Look after your skin, have regular facials weather they be microdermabrasion’s or a lymphatic drainage facial or even a light peel. I believe if regular facials are done every 4- 6 weeks you can really tell the difference.

02

Use a cleanser that’s suits you. A cleanser should not make your skin feel tight and dry. Just clean. My favourite is the Bioderma Micelle brand, they have different versions for each skin type. Neils Yard also do fab natural products and they smell sensational.

Family Summer Holidays Ideas Pull-Out

Holiday pull out

There’s nothing to do… So during the looooong summer break your children are complaining one day in to the 6 weeks that they have nothing to do. How about some of these activities where you don’t have to travel too far or spend too much.

Workshops Pets at home - Pet product’s retailer Pets at Home runs free workshops for kids in all of its 400+ stores during school holidays. Sessions last between 30 minutes and one hour. Sessions are designed for 5-11 yr olds. 22 newport vision August 2017

Lego Builds If you’re between 6 and 14 (sorry grown-ups, this one isn’t for you!), go into your nearest official Lego store (our nearest is Cardiff) on the first Thursday of every month between 4-6pm to take part in the Lego Mini Build.

Get there as soon as you can, as stock is limited to 200-300 models per store (depending on size and location), and it’s first come, first served. Staff will show your kids how to make the model, which Lego told us is worth around £5 (but it’s not for sale). Once it’s been made - it should take about 10-15 mins the kids can take it home for free.

Activities where you don’t have to travel too far Get Baking and cooking – kids love helping out in the kitchen (honest- and if they don’t they will by the end of the holidays) bake some cakes or biscuits (if nothing else you’ll get a sugar fix to keep you lasting all day with the mini-me’s!

Sen BBQ

Anyone for a kebab? I’m pretty sure the majority of us like to participate in a good kebab from time to time. Take out or eat in Sen BBQ know how to deliver the goods. Sen BBQ is situated on Chepstow Road in the heart of Maindee, a perfect location to drop in for a bite to eat on your way home after a few drinks perhaps. But did you know through the back is a small Turkish Narnia where you can sit in? You’d never know you were sat on Chepstow Road out the back of a kebab shop. Nothing fancy but adequately neat and tidy with comfortable dining table and chairs accompanied by a 5 hygiene rating.

The menu offers a good range of dishes; cold and hot 28 newport vision August 2017

The menu offers a good range of dishes; cold and hot starters such as feta cheese and humus, falafel or kofte balls, chicken and beef burgers with all the usual sides and a small range of Turkish pizza specials ranging from £2-6. The Chef ’s Specials cover a range of meat dishes with rice averaging £7 a dish, even a sirloin steak served with chips, mushrooms and grilled peppers, salad, rice and fresh bread all for £10 and barbecued quail with the works for £6.50. Then there’s the kebabs except there are no pittas here!

g Turk Cuisi ish ne

Kebabs are presented in a wrap like roll of freshly cooked bazlama flat bread – the Turkish equivalent to a naan bread.

Kebabs are presented in freshly cooked bazlama bread

For this visit we went for the BBQ Full Mix sharer platter for 2 consisting of lamb and chicken shish, lamb chops, lamb ribs, chicken wings, kofte, quail, mixed

If you’re a meat lover then you won’t be disappointed with this generous and filling dish all for just £22! A right good feed and an alternative to the usual kebab that won’t break the bank whether you’re eating in or taking out!

If you’re a meat lover then you won’t be disappointed

B

I’ve had a kebab many times from Sen BBQ – my personal favourite is a chicken shish, with all the salad and a little garlic sauce. The chicken is diced in to bite sized chunks and has that expected grilled barbecued flavour. Sen also has their own salad mix finely chopped, other salad is available. The meat and salad are then tightly rolled into a flat bread wrap - easy to eat, no knife and fork required - way more delicious than a typical pitta.

donner, salad and rice. The meat is seasoned well and the lamb chops are finger licking good.

Mclean Turkey Burger Another burger recipe? Guilty. Well, I did say I love burgers. And remember a turkey is not just for Christmas – combined with all these tasty ingredients, you really won’t be disappointed with this super-lean hero burger. Method Preheat your grill to its highest setting. Chuck the turkey, fish sauce, coriander, sesame oil and spring onions into a large bowl. Season generously with salt and pepper, then get your hands stuck in and work the ingredients well. The more you work the meat, the better the burgers will hold together when cooked. Shape the meat into two equal patties.

Place the patties on your grill pan or a baking tray and grill the burgers for 5 minutes on each side or until they are totally cooked through. Check by slicing into one of the patties to make sure the meat is white all the way through, with no raw pink bits left.

Ingredients 400g turkey mince 3 tsp fish sauce ½ bunch of coriander, leaves only, roughly chopped 2 tsp sesame oil

And remember a turkey is not just for Christmas Meanwhile, cut your burger buns in half. Mix together the yoghurt and chipotle paste and spread over the burger buns. When your burgers are cooked, remove from the grill and build your dream burger, stacking it up with tomato and lettuce – the bigger, the better.

Education Leavers Successfully Getting Into Employment

Whilst 2017 has whizzed from January to August in a blink of an eye it has surprisingly brought with it some good news, less unemployment and more job vacancies! From January to March 2017 the UK had 767,000 job vacancies. This was 16,000 more than the last quarter of 2016 and 14,000 more than for a year earlier. So this is great for everyone right? Young adults are better educated on leaving school than ever before. Nevertheless, the unemployment rate for those aged from 16 to 24 has been consistently higher than that for older age groups. Not only are they more likely to be

34 newport vision August 2017

unemployed but even when in work, young adults are very likely to be low paid. Across the UK, young adult poverty has risen by more than any other age group in the last decade. But how can that be?

Are employers looking for employee’s with more experience? How do we ensure our 16-24 year olds are recruited?

There were 826,000 young people (aged 16 to 24) in the UK who were not in education, employment or training for October to December 2016, 60,000 aged 16 to 17 and 766,000 aged 18 to 24. So what does that mean for Education Leavers? Are employers looking for employee’s with more experience? How do we ensure our 16-24 year olds are recruited?
