Celebrity Edge and her secrets to looking fit’n’fabulous at 59! Her big break came at sweet 16, when her father’s friend asked her to design his kitchen. “It was my first assignment and I haven’t looked back since,” she tells me. “The passion grew stronger and the projects bigger!” Having achieved iconic status, Kelly's contemporary stamp

“I like to feel a sense of harmony in my house, cocooned in comfort and surrounded by gorgeous pieces that I have discovered and acquired over the years, in order to create that sense of calm and relaxation within my home. For me, that’s what accessories do… they act like jewellery; they’re the finishing touch bringing everything together, telling your story in your home.” Craft champion Craft-loving Kelly is clearly all about creativity and there’s one trend in particular that she’s currently enjoying… on-trend terrazzo. “For me, it’s one of the biggest trends at the moment, but not your usual large, junky terrazzo… terrazzo has had an upmarket makeover, with bespoke pieces available that use chips of marble for a truly dramatic effect.”

is emblazoned on numerous high-end properties, private jets and superyachts, along with countless commercial projects, worldwide. A simple design philosophy Famous for her taupe colour palette and minimalist taste, the internationally-acclaimed interior designer typically works with neutral colours, a trademark of her vintage-inspired “East-meets-West” style. "I like the palette's simplicity. Not only is it easy to work with and pair different colours, textures and fabrics to, it also screams luxury. These tones complement any splashes

According to the queen of design, craft is crucial. “Craft, like design and art, is extremely important, and plays a vital role in our economy, not just in terms of trade and employment. This is why I am actively involved with the Great Britain Campaign, helping small businesses in the UK to showcase what they have to offer. I’m a huge supporter of craft in Britain, and would hate to see this tradition die out. Creativity is what makes the world go round!”

Inspiration, inspiration, inspiration... Along with her home town, London, Kelly's trips overseas always influence her work. "I loved living in Chelsea and now in Notting Hill. I think that wherever you live or hang out will always have an influence on your inspiration." Her ‘go-to’ interiors shops/ trade fairs? "There are so many to go to nowadays! The Cloth Shop in Notting Hill is one of my favourites. I love London Design Week, which is always incredible and I never fail to find something inspiring and original. Decorex is another great one… always packed to the brim. Every year, I go to Maison et Objet in Paris and Salone del Mobile in Milan for inspiration." She says her travels have played a key part in her success: “Travelling brings me so much inspiration! I travel to such wonderful places through work and everywhere inspires me. I travel regularly to the Far East, America and Europe for work. I love the Eastern philosophy, sense of tranquillity, harmony and way of life. I also adore Europe. Places like Paris have such fantastic culture, people, food and sights… always inspiring. Among my favourite Parisian restaurants are Le Voltaire and the chic La Société. I also love Italy, particularly Positano, Capri and Florence.”

Life up in the air & on the ocean wave… Another prestigious assignment entailed styling British Airways’ (former) first-class cabins. "The designs have since changed, but I still love flying with BA. It’s the height of comfort, which is exactly what anyone would want while travelling.” With her relentless travels, does she have any travel tips? “Pack wisely, especially for a business trip, ignore any jet lag and stay in the time zone that you’re in. Read a great book, watch a good movie, use a good moisturiser and drink lots of water. Amazing food and great company help, too! That’s about all you need.” She has, however, had to overcome one of her travel bugbears… “Overpacking. I am the most organised person in the world but I have previously been guilty of overpacking.

Now, I take my time when I pack, so I’m careful to take just what I need.” Celebrity Edge The interior design visionary recently collaborated with Celebrity Cruises, which is launching a ground-breaking new cruise ship promising an assortment of “firsts” for the cruising industry and the world with the ship’s refined, outward-facing design. Pushing the boat out with the cruise ship interior design boundaries, the transformational Celebrity Edge will set a new standard on the market, thanks to its state-ofthe-art, revolutionary design. Kelly was brought on board to design the ship’s spectacular, ultra-luxurious accommodation, including its Iconic Suites, Edge Villas and Edge Staterooms with Infinite Verandas, turning every room into a statement about

modern luxury. She was also at the forefront of creating The Retreat, a luxurious, private space comprising chic indoor and outdoor areas with a sundeck, pool and poolside bar. Opening up the world for discerning travellers, Celebrity Edge sets sail later this year. What has Kelly learnt from this revolutionary project? “That there is so much more to come, and one day I will design an entire ship. That's my dream!”

Fit'n'Fab at 59 Despite her full-on work schedule, the flawless inspirational style icon never fails to look amazing. "My daughter, Natasha, has taught me how amazing an alkaline lifestyle is. Honestly Healthy recipes and daily exercise make the perfect duo for me. Also, Dr Joshi looks after me. As for skincare, I love Linda Meredith’s facials. Sleep and drinking loads of water are essential with my workload."

Kelly’s range of luxury products for the home are available from her retail store: www.kellyhoppen.com

Stylish Kelly's a firm believer that age doesn't matter. "I've never thought about it. This is why I've always been honest about my age." Striking a life/ work balance is especially important to her. "I work out every morning… it helps set me up for the day. I work in a very focused way and when I finish, and at weekends, I relax and recharge my battery, unless filming. I’m lucky... a great team of people behind the scenes helps me balance everything."

Kelly is an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, cultivating young talent and inspiring young people to pursue their business ideas. She’s also an ambassador for the UK Government’s GREAT campaign, which showcases the very best Britain has to offer. © Angela Sara West 2018 www.angelasarawest.com

GETTING YOUR BUSINESS NOTICED

You could have just set up the most amazing business with great products and fantastic service. Your vision of where you are going and what you are doing is clear and determined. However, if your potential customers have never heard of you and are unaware that you even exist, your business is likely to disappear without a trace. What can you do to get your business noticed? Well you can pay a marketing company lots of money, or you can do it yourself. Using your unique insight you can create a personalised, precision-targeted marketing campaign that no external agency could pull off whilst costing a lot less. Here are our top eight tactics to ensure your business is noticed by the right people.

1. Advertorials Research shows that advertorials will be read by more people, and generate more responses, than a straightforward advertisement. This mix of advertising and editorial is an article written for a magazine or local newspaper subtly sprinkled with relevant sales information.

2. Business Cards Most business cards are about as much use as a scrap of paper with a name and number scribbled on it. Not great for showcasing your business. Make sure you stand out and add in more details such as the services you provide and images. Your business card should be memorable and pack a huge promotional punch!

3. Blogs Don’t be scared if you aren’t a best-selling author like JK Rowling. By by offering engaging information and insight you can build a personal and lasting relationship with your customers giving them a regular reason to visit your website. 4. Emails Creating an inbox friendly e-mail that looks as if it is written specifically for the recipient and that encourages a response is what is needed. Automated sales e-mails can be as welcome and subtle as a brick through a window. Think personal, not corporate, and focus on your readers’ concerns not your business’ – this goes for your e-mail subject line too. 5. Press Releases Designed to let us mere mortals communicate with the big shots in the media and, consequently, the potentially thousands of people reading or reading that media, a well-crafted press release is a way to make tomorrow’s headlines and grab some free publicity into the bargain. 6. Sales Letters An effective sales letter grabs the reader’s interest at the first line then takes them, one inviting step at a time, towards an irresistible ‘call to action’.

Newport Vision offer a consultative service to help new and established businesses with marketing campaigns. To book your consultation call 01633 771777

The simplicity of its construction, the precision of its composition and the efficiency of its narrative makes an exquisitely crafted sales letter part modernist masterpiece and part customer catnip. 7. Social Media Can a social medium be used for marketing purposes without spoiling all the fun? Yes, of course, depending on who your followers are and what you do with them. Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin and Twitter have different audiences and uses and, used correctly, can get your business seen, heard and noticed like no other. 8. Websites As far as websites are concerned, size doesn’t matter. Whether you are Pizza Express or Pete’s Café, your site gets exactly the same space on the screen. The site that succeeds is the one that uses its space best to give visitors, and search engines, exactly what they are looking for. Summary Despite what marketing professionals will tell you, you don’t need to be a marketing professional to write effective marketing content. Each of the methods described here can be expertly produced by following a practical step-bystep procedure, like following a recipe to bake a cake or a DIY guide to repair a dripping tap. All you need is a good instruction manual.

Generational by Nathan Palmer

Investing has always been a buzz word for a father or a mother that has dependents. Generically speaking their aim in life is to set up and create a future for the ones that follow them. This month’s foreword, I wanted to find fashionable items that can empower your loved ones with a luxury item that will increase in their valve.

Old/Classic/Rare vrs New/Contemporary/Available I investigated the rare and vintage market as it seemed that there was more evidence of a growing fascination for postwar complicated timepieces and further reputation of the steel-cased chronograph as a serious bet for would-be watch investors. Appetite for Art Volatility in the art market has been driven by prices of post-war and contemporary art. While the appetites of great institutions such as the Louvre, which opened a new franchise in Abu Dhabi, put more pressure on supply. Prices for the very best 19th and 20th century art continue to hit the headlines, there is hope within the industry that the sensational Da Vinci art can attract a wider audience. 20 NEWPORT VISION AUGUST 2018

Investing abroad It can be tempting to explore so called "up and coming" markets where property is dirt cheap but it’s usually a much safer bet to opt for an established market. Mortgage lenders will also look more kindly on properties in areas with a proven rental market. Set clear goals and expectations as to what you want from the investment. If your primary reason for investing is you're attracted to the romantic notion of investing abroad then it maybe best to consider property closer to home. It’s not always as idyllic as it sounds.

Mercedes-Benz 300SL ‘Gullwing’ For both the jet set and the burgeoning sports car crowd, there was one sports car that reigned supreme in 1955, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing,” as it became known. Gorgeous proportions, brilliant race-bred engineering, and blistering performance made the Gullwing not only one of the most desirable vehicles of the 1950s but one of the most desirable vehicles of all time. However, not all Gullwings were created equal, and if you were a well-heeled sports car enthusiast in 1955, the aluminum-bodied 300 SL was the car to have. Its lighter bodywork made it even more competitive against other British and Italian 3-litre sports cars. Additionally, these cars were also outfitted with the Sonderteile engine, which utilized a competition-spec camshaft, increasing power output by 15 horsepower. With both a slight increase in power and decrease in overall weight, the additional performance in these cars was instantly discernable from behind the wheel. It goes without saying that the alloy Gullwing was the cream of the crop and handedly capable of outperforming all of its competitors on both road and track.

The Fabric Of course the most common place our clients have splurged is in the fabric itself. I occasionally have requests for the top of the finest fabrics which to me are Zenga fabrics from traditional fabric mills in Italy. Extravagant luxury can be found in Fratelli Tallis Di Delfino’s line which blends precious wools with 24 carat gold! Sporting exclusive elegance such as this is not cheap with one of these suits costing over £15,000. Now that is one expensive suit. It is not just the material of the fabric that makes a fabric expensive. The efforts of the master weavers and dyers create for some of the most exciting and strikingly stylish patterns out there. Truly quality you can see and feel.

Bespoke Suit When it comes to bespoke tailoring, the sky (and your wallet) is the limit. In my experience of suiting men and women from around the world, we have come across some very expensive suits that took bespoke luxury to new heights.

Adora Svitak, 12

THE NEXT GENERATION Newport Vision are huge advocates of the next generation and supporting them as they make the transition from full time education to working life. Gone are the days where the ‘Kevin and Perry’ tantrums are the norm, we are now seeing a movement where our youth are making huge steps into establishing themselves as major innovators and entrepreneurs, welcome Generation Z. Through more efficient, non-traditional routes, namely the internet and channels such as Youtube they are taking the opportunity to learn things for themselves. 24 NEWPORT VISION AUGUST 2018

Though Gen Z can be less focused than their Millennial counterparts, in school, they will create a document on their school computer, do research on their phone or tablet, while taking notes on a notepad, then finish in front of the TV with a laptop, while face-timing a friend. You get the picture. Gen Z can quickly and efficiently shift between work and play, with multiple distractions going on in the background...working on multiple tasks at once. Talk about multi-multi-tasking. Just think about how this kind of flow might reshape the office. This newly developing high tech and highly networked world has

resulted in an entire generation thinking and acting more entrepreneurially. Generation Z desires more independent work environments. As a matter of fact, 72% of teens say they want to start a business someday. Generation Z’ers were born social. Arguably, as a result of the celebrities and media they follow, Generation Z seeks uniqueness in all walks of life primarily through the brands they do business with, future employers, etc.

At Newport Vision we have decided to celebrate Generation Z by dedicating a page to them each month. We want to proudly showcase the achievements of the next generation in South Wales by giving them a platform where they can confidently show their talents, uniqueness and entrepreneurial flair. If you are between the age of 10 and 18 and would like to be involved or are a teacher or group leader and would like to put someone forward then please contact Newport Vision today!

ACADEMY FOR

CONFIDENCE

Wenda James-Rowe is passionate about helping young girls and women to reach their true potential and embrace their individuality.

To find out more or to make a booking contact Wenda on 07968694517 www.thegogirlacademy.co.uk

The Go Girl Academy was founded by Wenda James-Rowe in 2012, when as her job as an Image Consultant and Fitness instructor, Wenda was regularly told by parents that their daughters lacked confidence and self-esteem and that frustratingly were at a loss as to how to tackle this.

This is exactly the message and ethos of The Go Girl Academy, we are all unique and individual and we all have unique individual qualities. If we realise what we are good at and what we are passionate about early on in life, this can be instrumental in helping us with career and life decisions in the future.

Wenda is an identical twin and grew up being compared to her very brainy sister. “I used to compare myself to my sister and wonder why I wasn’t as academic as her? “ I then realised in my later teens that I loved working with people and was actually more creative than academic. I wish I had realised this much earlier as I really did beat myself up about this over the years. Both my sister and I have gone on to have successful careers but in very different fields.

The Go Girl Academy delivers a range of life-changing and inspirational holiday camps, inspiration days, events and workshops which promotes self-esteem, confidence and well being for girls aged 9-16. The true essence of Go Girl is to empower girls to reach their true potential, to embrace their individuality and to lead happy fulfilling lives. We also are passionate about promoting entrepreneurism and work with inspirational businesswomen who share their life and career stories with our Go Girls to inspire them to dream big!

MAKE-UP with Alex Niven

makeup slides off throughout the day, then a mattifying primer would be the best option for you. Investing in a primer can help to prolong the wear of your foundation, and during the warmer summer months, it will help to keep your makeup looking fresh throughout the day.

What primers are best for my skin type? Listed below are several options for pairing foundations and primers together. A primer is designed to be applied underneath makeup to make it last longer, appear more “glowy”, or to control oils in the skin. Primers can come in the form of creams, powders, sprays, gels, and liquids. When choosing a primer, it is important to think about what it is you want the primer to do. Are you looking for something to give your skin an all-over glow? Or are you looking for something to keep your foundation from becoming greasy throughout the day? When it comes to choosing the right primer for yourself, the overwhelming amount of options available can make it a little confusing to know which one will work best. Knowing which primer to use for your skin type is essential, as using the wrong kind can actually make your makeup wear off faster. Each primer is designed for a specific purpose, and some

primers are only suitable for certain skin types (eg, oily or dry skin types). Key words like “illuminating” and “mattifying” will let you know which skin type each primer is for. Pore filling primers provide a smoothing effect, and can help blur fine lines and visible pores. In some cases, you may need a primer that does several things and should look for one which has multiple benefits. Each person is different, and asking a makeup consultant their opinion is always a good idea if you are struggling to find the right one. The primer that will work best for you will depend on your skin type and the foundation you wear. If you have a more dry skin type and find that your foundation looks too powdery, investing in a good illuminating primer will help your skin to glow and look fresh. If you have an oily skin type and find your

To further smooth pores and fine lines, try it with Makeup Forever Pore Smoothing Primer. This silicone based primer glides across the skin and helps to reduce the appearance of texture such as acne scars or open pores. Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation & MAC Strobe Cream ( £33.50 / £25.00 ) Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation is the UK’s number one bestselling foundation, and for good reason. It’s lasting power is unmatched by any other foundation, but if you find it’s a little too drying on your skin then try it paired with Strobe Cream by MAC. This lightweight illuminating primer is perfect to add a luminous, healthy glow to the skin. Apply Strobe Cream before foundation application and on the tops of cheekbones for an added glow. bareMinerals Powder Foundation & Makeup Forever Primer ( £27.00 / £26.00 ) bareMinerals Powder Foundation is a perfect lightweight summer foundation for those who want a more natural finish to the skin.

MAC Face and Body Foundation & Smashbox Photo Finish Primer ( £24.50 / £26.00 ) For a lightweight, glowy summer skin, try MAC Face & Body Foundation paired with Smashbox Photo Finish Primer. This primer works to even out skin tone and prolongs the wear time of any foundation. The foundation can be used on both the face and the body, and looks gorgeous when applied to the décolletage and tops of the shoulders.

FOOD REVIEW

MAMMA

METRE LONG PIZZA

30 NEWPORT VISION AUGUST 2018

We cordially received an invite to Mamma Lina’s Italian Restaurant in Rogerstone. Such was the formality we dressed up. We have been to the restaurant before and never had even a trace of disappointment. This time was different though because there was a gimmick! Handmade freshly prepared metre long pizza and bottomless prosecco. I know what you’re thinking - you had me at gimmick, right? Us too. Mamma Lina’s Restaurant & Cocktail Bar, located on Tregwilym Road in Rogerstone, opened its doors back in November 2016. The building itself is newly renovated with bags of charm and plenty of Italian influence. On arrival we were greeted with a warm reception from two of the owners, Laura and Gianluca, who we have known for a number of years and never have we been treated like anything other than family.

LINA’S

That said, every guest is guaranteed a very warm welcome and their hospitality and quality of food has earned them glowing reviews including most recently achieving the Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor for the third consecutive year. The restaurant is perfect for both intimate diners in small groups and larger parties without losing the ambience. Some of my favourite evenings here have been listening to live music, sipping cocktails and chatting with other patrons. The drinks menu offers a good selection of wines, beers, and an array of cocktails – something for everyone.

AND BOTTOMLESS PROSECCO

Today, however, we only had eyes for the prosecco when taking the “bottomless” from the invitation as a challenge. The pizza was perfectly hand prepared from scratch in the restaurant kitchen and cooked in a gorgeous custom built wood fired pizza oven that has been imported from Italy. As Gianluca and his team happily explained to us it is commonplace in Italy for friends to relax and share these extra-large pizzas with different toppings and shapes depending upon the region of Italy you are in. As for the Prosecco – do I need to provide any info about this apart from it is chilled, crisp, fizzy and bottomless for two hours so I recommend you make arrangements to leave the car at home! We are pretty sure that Mamma Lina’s is not just the only restaurant in Newport serving metre long pizzas but the only one in Wales! We loved it and will be returning. Thank you Mamma Lina. Buon Appetit! Visit www.mammalinas.co.uk for more information about the restaurant. LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 31

TRAVEL REVIEW

THE DON CESAR HOTEL, ST PETERSBURG FLORIDA It is a completely surreal beach town where the locals are as relaxed as the tourists. 36 NEWPORT VISION AUGUST 2018

The iconic Don CeSar Hotel a replica of an Italian castle exceeds all of expectations.

You will have noticed that I took a few weeks out recently to go on a bit of a tour of the East coast of the USA so that I could write about it in this and upcoming pieces. By far my favourite location was St Petersburg Beach in Florida. It is a completely surreal beach town where the locals are as relaxed as the tourists. I don’t think that I have ever experienced such a laid back destination before.

Arguably the jewel in the crown is the iconic Don CeSar Hotel which is a replica of an Italian castle and which exceeded all of my expectations. It would be an understatement to say that the building demands your attention whether you approach it from the road or from the beach and it was the perfect place to unwind and reconnect with the family. The architecture of the hotel is exquisite but do not let that detract from the beach with its soft white sand and perfectly

clear blue ocean. Most of my friends and family assumed that the pictures I was sending back had been editedin some way. We stayed in an ocean-view room which was particularly spacious and benefitted from a balcony from which we gazed over the Gulf of Mexico as the sun went down. Guests are able to hire various beach essentials from the hotel and we made use of a large family-sized lounge chair with a canopy so that we could watch the waves rolling in whilst the children played in the sand.

When we did venture from the Don CeSar it was to take walks along the beach and to try out a few of the beachfront restaurants or to visit the pretty downtown area. The service at the Don CeSar was first class and, thankfully, I was rarely left without an empty glass during the evening to the extent that I became known as ‘Mrs Tom Collins’ by the end of our stay. We were in search of luxury and we certainly found it at the “Pink Palace”
