to our vision Welcome to the July edition of Newport Vision. We have been to the beautiful PIER64 where we were wined and dined within an inch of our lives. It is truly a beautiful setting and exceeded even our expectations. Read on for more details. Featured on our front cover is Sir Richard Branson. I spent quite a while looking for the perfect description of Sir Richard. Nothing quite captured it perfectly until I read how he describes himself on twitter. Tie-loathing adventurer, philanthropist & troublemaker, who believes in turning ideas into reality. Otherwise known as Dr Yes at Virgin! We chat with Richard about his long-standing love affair with Mallorca & his Son Bunyola Virgin Retreat!
WELCOME TO THE JULY EDITION OF NEWPORT VISION. Shevaun Mckenna MUA answers the questions we are all asking and our new celebrity fashion designer Nathan Palmer shows us what’s hot right now. Although we are an independent magazine and rely on advertisements to cover our running costs each month we nonetheless dedicate pages to start-up businesses and local charities. We have been overwhelmed with the way in which Newport has embraced our magazine and we would like to thank you for inviting us into your homes, business and communities.

Sir Richard Branson – Back at Son Bunyola! Planes, trains and Virgin mobiles… with outstanding resorts around the globe, too, this billionaire businessman has transformed the world’s landscapes and skies with his boundless brand. In March 2000, multi-awardwinning Richard was knighted by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace for "services to entrepreneurship". Two years later, he was named in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons and has also been ranked in Time magazine’s "Top 100 Most Influential People in the World". Having clocked up five decades in business, Virgin’s expansion has seen him successfully diversify in sectors from health care to health clubs and cruise ships to space ships. His phenomenally-fruitful, world-renowned brand has given us everything from music and mobiles, comics and gyms, to high-speed trains and transatlantic travel. With 60 Virgin companies worldwide, he now employs around 71,000 people in 35 countries around the globe.

With his unrivalled taste for adventure, there have been ballooning expeditions and world record-breaking accomplishments galore, including clinching the fastest-ever Atlantic Ocean crossing. In fact, he’s entered the Guinness Book of Records no less than seven times! The Virgin tycoon has also starred (usually as himself!) in blockbusters Casino Royale, Around the World in 80 Days and Superman Returns, along with small-screen series The Simpsons, Friends, Only Fools And Horses and Baywatch. Barefoot luxury at Branson’s Necker Island home Offscreen, the white-sand beaches of Necker Island, lapped by turquoise water and stunning views of neighbouring islands, are where this adventurous entrepreneur usually resides. A young 29-year-old Richard bought his much-loved Caribbean retreat in the British Virgin Islands in 1978 to impress his future wife, Joan, whom he later married there. Despite its $5m price tag, he initially offered a cheeky $100,000 for the uninhabited 74-acre isle.
Britain’s best-known entrepreneur talks to Angela Sara West about his properties around the world and how he loves his favourite Mallorcan retreat so much, he bought it twice!

I left Britain for my love of the beautiful British Virgin Islands and, in particular, Necker Island “We’ve built our home there, a place where my family and I are able to truly relax. I’m so inspired by this idyllic island paradise’s beauty.” Having transformed it into a multi-million-pound luxury resort, with a 10-bed villa overlooking the beach, other luxury residences, private pools, tennis courts and a helipad, Necker is now one of the most exclusive resorts in the world…
Less than impressed, the seller (British aristocrat, Lord Cobham) threw Richard off the island to find his own way home which, incidentally, is how his brainwave for Virgin Airways (later Virgin Atlantic) came about! A year later, he paid a desperate-to-sell Lord Cobham $180,000 under the condition that Richard would build a resort there, marking the start of his luxury property portfolio, Virgin Limited Edition. He sold his UK properties, including his Oxfordshire estate and London home, to make the move to his new main residence in 2013. “I left Britain for my love of the beautiful British Virgin Islands and, in particular, Necker Island,” says Richard.
12 NEWPORT VISION JULY 2018
The private island paradise is also a playground for Richard’s large and lucky group of famous friends and showbiz pals. He describes his party island as ”a wonderful magnet to attract wonderfully-interesting people,” and has played host to a “who’s who” of Hollywood heavyweights, rock stars, royals and ex-presidents there, including Robert De Niro, Demi Moore, Harrison Ford, Kate Moss, Mick Jagger, George Michael, Mariah Carey, Princess Diana (with Princes William and Harry in tow), The Duchess of Cambridge, Nelson Mandela and Barack and Michelle Obama. One Direction’s Harry Styles once famously shared a hot tub with the Virgin boss there, while the tennis-loving host regularly
invites ex-tennis champ, Boris Becker, to participate in the “Necker Cup”. Planes, flames & hurricanes When not busy schmoozing or setting sail on his luxury catamaran yacht, the Necker Belle, Richard rides around on a golf buggy or his electric bike, taking in the natural wonders such as flamingos and lemurs, along with the startling views. But the business magnate’s magnificent abode has twice been devasted by Mother Nature…. The Great House was rebuilt following a fire caused by a lightning strike during Hurricane Irene in 2011, with actress Kate Winslet heroically rescuing Richard's 90-year-old mother, Eve. “She was wondering when a director was going to shout CUT!,” says Richard. And he wasn’t exactly dressed for the occasion himself. "All we could do was run over to the house as fast as we could, stark naked!" Necker reopened in 2013, 20-percent bigger and better. The Balinese-style home now came complete with hammocks, eight guest rooms and Jacuzzis, “Like the old house, but on steroids!" But the main house
was left uninhabitable again after finding itself directly in the path of Category-5 Hurricane Irma when it hit last year. “We felt the full force of the strongest hurricane ever in the Atlantic Ocean,” says Richard, who rode out the storm in his wine cellar. “Many of the buildings, and much of the vegetation, were destroyed or badly damaged.”. Mallorcan magic… Back in business in Bunyola! While his main residence is out of action, Richard’s spoilt for choice with his other properties around the world. His privately-owned collection of award-winning luxury hotels and retreats with Virgin Limited Edition also includes a lodge in the Swiss Alps, a safari camp in Kenya, and a kasbah in Morocco's Atlas Mountains. “Whilst Necker Island is being rebuilt, I’ve had the pleasure of spending time at many of these properties,” he tells me. More evocative of a home than a hotel, each unique retreat offers a “home-away-from-home” feel. “I’ve tried to create the kinds of places that I would never want to leave. I’ve always run my homes like businesses, and run all my businesses like homes.”
spectacular Son Bunyola, resulting in him selling up in 2002, selling his iconic La Residencia Hotel, a Mecca for A-listers, including Leonardo Caprio, Goldie Hawn and Michael Douglas, too.
Richard’s been enjoying a slice of Spanish life at his newly-renovated gated Mallorcan estate, Son Bunyola, between Esporles and Banyalbufar on the northwest coast, more than ever. He’s had a long-standing love affair with the largest of the Balearic islands. “Mallorca has always held a special place in my heart, since I first visited as a child.” But that love affair was marred with disputes with the local authorities, who refused planning permission for the British businessman to build a luxury boutique hotel at his
Following a change of heart and Richard's realisation that he really missed Mallorca, he says he couldn’t resist when the opportunity arose to buy Bunyola back lock stock for around £11m in 2015. He plans to convert the estate into the very best eco-resort in Europe. “Central to the estate is a finca building dating back to the 1800s, surrounded by vines, citrus fruit trees, almonds and olive trees,” he explains. “It’s absolutely beautiful and I look forward to seeing how plans progress!” Haute historic homes Part of a World Heritage site, the expansive estate sprawls over 700 acres and Richard cites numerous reasons for choosing the area. "The northwest coast has always been a location for which I have great fondness. It has so much to offer... unspoilt nature, picturesque villages, top-class restaurants and finca hotels and culture. The region is dominated by the LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 13
Tramuntana mountain range and its breath-taking scenery, and is home to some of the most historical and picturesque towns on the island. My son, Sam, even named his own daughter Eva-Deià, in honour of the village of Deià, which is one of the most beautiful in the world.” Overlooking 5km of breath-taking coastline, his property comprises the historic Mallorquín manor house (the above-mentioned finca) plus three country houses, which he has recently transformed into ultra-luxury villas, available for exclusive hire. “We opened villas Sa Punta de S’Aguila and Sa Terra Rotja in summer 2016, with Son Balagueret opening last summer. We usually stay in Sa Terra Rotja, our four-bedroom villa situated near the edge of the estate, but I’d be torn if I had to pick a favourite out of the three.” Exposed beam ceilings, walkout balconies, sumptuous bedrooms, a formal dining room with a fireplace… Sa Terra seamlessly blends old and new with an elegant result. Outside, a private terrace and pool overlook the sparkling Med, while a peaceful pebble beach is a mere stone’s throw away. Built in traditional Mallorcan style, with its original turret dating back to the 13th century, three-bedroom abode with courtyard, Son Balagueret, simply oozes history, while terracotta-tiled, five-bedroom Sa Punta de S’Aguila is sympathetically-built into the landscape along a track above the coastline, affording panoramic mountain and ocean outlooks from the flowerlined terrace.
Each villa boasts a private pool plus a dedicated concierge service via DEIA VIP to attend to every wish’n’whim. “Not to mention stunning views!”, adds Richard. “A stay at Son Bunyola is not like any villa stay, and it is so much more than a place to rest your head! All guests are encouraged to treat the villas like their own home from the moment they arrive; we like to ensure our guests feel special and receive excellent customer service, and aim to create a truly unique experience.” Glory Days Historically, Son Bunyola was an important estate, producing its own olive oil and wine. In restoring the land to its former glory, Richard has planted
almond and citrus fruit trees and vines, alongside the ancient olive trees. With a strong ethos of giving back, the prolific philanthropist says Virgin Limited Edition’s recruiting policy is to give back to surrounding communities by offering training and employment. “We recruit locally at Son Bunyola, and source food and wine from right here in the region. We work hard to protect the beautiful landscape we’re so fortunate to occupy. Our approach includes a commitment to responsible supply chain management, fair trade policies, ethical dealings with our employees and the local community, and, of course, the environment."
We’ve had a special bond with the island for several generations, and I’m sure it will go on for generations to come!
Balearic playtime His favourite things to do on the island? "That’s the beauty of Mallorca… there’s so much to do and something for everyone, even if it’s just picking a great sun lounger and sunbathing.” The charismatic business magnate’s world-record breaking boat, Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, was found abandoned on the island a few years ago, after being s old to a sultan. As an experienced kitesurfer, he holds world records in that sport, too. “I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie, so I must have a way to stay active and adventurous, and Mallorca is great for hiking and cycling. I’d also recommend setting sail and exploring the coastline of Tramuntana where you’ll find some great spots for snorkelling and the chance to
discover some hidden caves. With clear Mediterranean waters, the area is perfect for scuba diving and fishing excursions, too.” When he’s not out and about, practising sports or embracing the island’s copious culture, there’s always his terrace for practicing his other preferred pastimes of yoga and Thai Chi. Richard enjoys a good game of chess, too, and is something of an ace when it comes to tennis. Luckily, the court’s just a short lob away… Expanding the property empire to infinity & beyond… Next stop? Space! So, what’s next for Richard’s property portfolio? Space travel has been his dream ever since watching the moon landings on
TV, and he has described Virgin Galactic, the world’s first commercial space line, as being “the greatest adventure of all”. With trips to the moon in the pipeline, could he soon be building there? “There are still so many places to see and not enough time to do it in. I’ve been lucky enough to visit many wonderful countries around the globe… But I’m very excited about the future of commercial space travel and what our team at Virgin Galactic are planning for our future astronauts!” The magic of Mallorca There are zero plans for retirement, but when it’s time for time out, there’s always this stunning Spanish island, with its dramatic scenery of verdant countryside against a backdrop of magnificent mountains and cobalt blue water.
"Mallorca is so special to me because it provides the perfect environment to relax, laugh, learn and love with my family,” Richard reveals. Eva-Deia now has a brother, Bluey, while Richard’s daughter, Holly, blessed him with twin grandchildren, Etta and Artie. Now he has the grandkids, Richard says he enjoys being able to spend more time in a place that means a great deal to them all. "My favourite memories are the most simple; sitting around the table talking, admiring the scenery and enjoying meals and good company. We’ve had a special bond with the island for several generations, and I’m sure it will go on for generations to come!"

I chose Verbier because it’s an amazing year-round destination, offering world-class skiing, fabulous après-ski and everything you could wish for in a summer escape! Mont Rochelle Hotel and Mountain Vineyard near Cape Town, South Africa: “This truly is one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa, a country I’ve been a regular visitor to for many years. I always make a point of enjoying the fantastic wines and local hospitality.”
The villas at Son Bunyola - Sa Punta de S’Aguila, Sa Terra Rotja and Son Balagueret – are available for exclusive hire from March to mid-November, and on request over the Christmas and New Year periods.
“There are few things I love more than travelling, discovering amazing locations and turning them into magical retreats for others to enjoy, too!” Ulusaba Private Game Reserve next to Kruger National Park, South Africa: “Ulusaba holds a special place in both our hearts, and we always have a wonderful time when we visit. Just the thought of the African bush conjures up fascinating images of breath-taking wilderness, sunrise safaris and a retreat far away from the city. Here, your imagination becomes reality. We usually relax in the Cliff Lodge, which has sweeping panoramic views over the bush, where you can see the sunrise, sunset and the stars. One of our other favourite rooms is the romantic Treehouse, which overlooks a watering hole where you can watch herds of elephants and rhinos drinking in the pond, which is full of hippos and crocodiles. It’s not uncommon to see the Big Five on just one safari trip here!”

NATHAN PALMER As a young child, Nathan Palmer would visit his Godfather after Sunday school. He'd help him thread needles, sew on buttons and cut fabrics, but little did he know that this would lead to him following in his Godfather's footsteps almost 30 years later as he became a bespoke tailor. Nathan was a sporty child and as a teen started competing in athletics. He shined in the 110m and 400m hurdles and went on to proudly represent Great Britain winning a silver medal in the 110m hurdles at the European Youth Olympic festival in 1999 and breaking Colin Jackson jnr hurdle record at the British champs. His sporting achievements didn't stop there, he also played international 7's rugby on the IRB circuit with friends such as 24 NEWPORT VISION JULY 2018

Realising that competing professionally had a short shelf life and knowing from the get go that coaching was not for him, Nathan decided to pursue his love of fashion and enrolled in Caerleon University. "At that time I wasn't the best" says Nathan, "I found the University methods difficult, I always dreamed of creating my own fashion brand and having my own fashion company. I am a visual learner rather than an academic, there were people who were better fashion illustrators, researchers etc than
myself who would create a great portfolio. I always knew what I wanted to create but never articulated my research or story which didn’t go down well with the lecturers, I suppose what I learnt from that time in my life was how to create a concept from one idea’’. “I was always in love with fashion and style but my passion grew and grew and I enrolled in a tailoring coarse in Canton. It was here that I say I received my 'old-school' training" says Nathan. “There was a wealth of knowledge that attended the coarse which helped grow my confidence, preparation and tailoring skills which I now put into practise everyday. It was a very small number of us and I was the youngest and the only man at
the coarse all of the other tailors were in their retirement, but I absolutely loved it and learned so much more than I did at University, unfortunately that course came to an end”. It wasn't long before Rapper Professor Green, Tinie Tempah and Jason Derulo were wearing Nathan’s fashion line which he started whilst at University and the rest as they say, is history. You only have to have a look on Nathan's Instagram page (@ NPBespoke) to see that his suits have graced many A list studded event’s, red carpet premiers and even Buckingham palace by the likes of Sam Warburton, many friends of the brand include Jermaine Defoe, Wilfried Bony,

MAKE-UP Q&A with Shevaun Mckenna This summer I’m going to a couple of all day events, namely the polo, Wimbledon and a friend’s wedding. I usually only wear a tinted moisturiser so how do I keep my skin looking fresh and youthful without the make-up looking caked on, especially around the eyes where it sits in my laughter lines? Ok so I get asked this question regularly. The trick is how you apply the makeup as well as products you choose. So firstly... if you’re out in the sun, a factor as a base is a must (heliocare 360 mineral). This can be used on top of a light base of moisturiser if needed... embroylisse lait creme is very good. Next is to choose a base, so if you are used to wearing a tinted moisturiser, some foundations will feel heavier on your skin so keep it light (mac face and body, Armani illumious silk, Charlotte Tilbury light wonder foundation) and using a good brush is key- Tom Ford cream foundation brush is my fav! People think if they have uneven skin tone or problem/ blemish areas you need a heavy foundation to cover....NO! That actually masks the whole skin so using a good concealer in the blemish/problem areas is the answer, followed by your choice of foundation (mac studio fix concealer, nars soft matte concealer). Now for the under eye concealer- note there is a
28 NEWPORT VISION JULY 2018
difference between bags and dark circles and there is two different ways to treat both... Bags...is really a lymphatic drainage facial using a good eye cream and a light reflecting concealer (Charlotte Tilbury the retoucher) Dark circles can be colour corrected with firstly a light application of colour correcting concealer (becca undereye brightening concealer) then another light application of a 1/2 shade lighter than your skintone liquid concealer (nars creamy concealer) All these can be applied with a warm ring finger!! Finish the look off with waterproof mascara and a cream blusher (Bobbi Brown pot rouge calypso coral and mars the multiple Portofino are my summer loves) If your t-zone tends to get a bit shiny, dust a light application of translucent powder (laura mercier translucent powder) and always taking a refresher spray in your bag to keep your makeup looking fresh throughout the day (Mac fix plus which comes in a travel size too).
Ok great! I feel my top lip could be fuller and as I don’t normally wear makeup, when I wear lipstick I feel it’s too much, especially reds and darker colours. Can I make my lips look fuller using a light pink or gloss? Yes, using a lip liner just line on top of your natural lip line with a soft nude colour (Charlotte Tilbury lip cheat pillow talk or supersize me) then blend the liner with your finger and blend it into your lip. FOOD REVIEW
THE PERFECT WATERFRONT LOCATION. LUXURY MEETS COMFORT ON THE WATER.
PIER 64
spectacularly modern chandelier and velvet and leather furnishings, framing bi-folding doors on the adjacent wall. And what a view to behold!
We were blessed with a mini heatwave at the beginning of June, Newport Vision decided to venture a little further afield than the norm when doing our monthly food review, and we visited Pier 64 in Penarth! As Newport seems to be missing a marina of our own and with our beloved neighbours, Cardiff, being fortunate enough to have a beautiful coast that is just a hop, skip and a jump from us, we made it our jaunt for the evening. As we pulled up to the car park the beautifully modern, wood cladded building welcomed us in but gave nothing away. Stepping into the reception area we got our first glimpse of the light and luxurious decor that promised a comfortable and enjoyable evening with a
The main restaurant is perfectly placed between the open plan bar area and the fantastic outside sitting area that gives you a front row seat to the marina itself where row on row of beautiful boats and yachts are anchored! With the temperature that afternoon hitting 23 degrees we ensured we stayed hydrated by ordering our first round of cocktails at the bar. From the extensive selection we ordered Passion-ate mocktail and a Rum Old Fashioned, we sipped away at our drinks before sitting in our booths that faced the stunning marina. We ordered starters and mains from the a la carte menu and enjoyed our cocktails whilst debating the purchase of a yacht and the possibility of putting it through as a business expense. For starters we ordered chorizo and mozzarella bruschetta, baked Camembert with cranberry sauce and toasted sourdough bread and as we were almost perched at the ‘dock of the bay’ we thought it only right we order seafood and
so the pan-fried scallops with pancetta lardons & pea purée and the sea salt and dry chilli flake calamari served with sweet chilli and soya sauce dip completed our first course. This mini feast was promptly served and impeccably presented. The freshness and quality of the ingredients was apparent from the first bite and the experienced chefs had baked, grilled and fried our dishes to perfection! The Camembert was baked beautifully and had a creamy and earthy taste and aroma which was complemented by the cranberry with the perfect amount of crusty sour dough bread. The scallops were like seafood flavoured marshmallows, with a sweet and delicate flavour, soft and not too chewy, absolute perfection. The calamari's came perfectly fried with a light coating of crisp batter flavoured with sea salt and chilli which paired perfectly with the calamari‘ subtle taste, and where I’ve often left a serving of calamari half eaten as it has been over cooked and
become tough, I can assure you, the plate was clean when the waitress came to clear the table. Mains were next: we ordered the rack of lamb, beer battered fish and chips and, as we were in one of the finest steakhouses, the men ordered the Welsh chateaubriand. The lamb was beautifully displayed over a mini mountain of perfectly flavoured garlic mashed potatoes with ratatouille and a red wine jus, the lamb and mash simply melted in your

mouth and the jus was to die for. The fish was fried in a tasty batter that was neither too heavy nor greasy but simply encased the chunky fresh cod that sat on a bed of perfectly cooked and salted chips. The pea purée and tartare sauce complemented the dish. The chateaubriand came on a platter for two with one ordering crumbled Stilton to crown his medium fillet and the other ordering a peppercorn sauce. To accompany, they ordered braised red cabbage, creamy garlic mushrooms, green beans with shallots and parmesan, truffle chunky chips and creamy spinach! Were their eyes bigger than their bellies? Indeed. Did they over order? Of course. But did they regret it? Not in the slightest! Each accompaniment was cooked as it should be and packed with enough flavour to be served as stand alone dishes, but let’s be honest, the show stopper, without a shadow of a doubt was the chateaubriand. We savoured each bite of our dishes, enjoying each other’s company in beautiful relaxed surroundings with every intention of merrily declining dessert and ending our night with another cocktail. That is until our friendly, attentive and highly efficient waitress pointed out that the perfect way to end the meal would be with one of their highly recommended desserts... as if we needed persuasion!

We politely umm’d and ahh’d over even looking at the menu but our minds were quickly made up when she proudly announced that on the menu they had the most amazing cheesecake or chocolate dessert that consisted of Ferrero Roche - she need say no more. The desserts were brought with four spoons and like children in a candy shop we over indulged unapologetically in two of the nicest desserts we had ever tried before we took a much needed stroll along the marina.
Just in case the above didn’t give it away, we had a fantastic evening, in beautiful surroundings with amazing food and friendly and attentive staff. Would we return? We already have, the very next weekend in fact, enjoying two courses from their set lunch menu! But please don’t take our word for it, book in and visit them yourselves and don’t forget to tell them Newport Vision sent you!
Nordic walking is a full-body exercise that's easy on the joints and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Find out about the Nordic walking technique, the health benefits and getting started.
WALKING ON THE WILD SIDE Nordic walking was originally a summer training regime for cross-country skiers.
Newport Vision met up with Ed Woolley, a British Nordic Walking Instructor from Nordic Walk Newport. Nordic walking was originally a summer training regime for cross-country skiers. It's based on using specially designed walking poles in a way that harnesses the power of the upper body to propel you forward as you walk. It is now a recognised way to turn a walk into a whole-body exercise that can be done by people of all ages and fitness levels. You'll be provided with Nordic walking poles (which are different to those used for trekking because of how the strap is used and the angle you plant them on the ground) and you’ll need trainers or walking shoes and appropriate clothing. When properly used, the poles take the weight off the knees and lower body joints – this makes you feel lighter on your feet. Similar to other forms of moderate activity, regular Nordic walking can lower your risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and helps with stress. Nordic walking, like any other form of exercise, can also be used as part of an exercise programme to lose weight. Ed holds walks at: • Tredegar House • Fourteen Locks Canal Centre • Newport Wetlands Centre To Find out more call Ed on 07906365280

Lighting is key, especially if your get-together is going to stretch from day into evening. If you prefer a vintage feel, string up LED festoon lights in your themed colour or add tea lights to glass hurricane lanterns to set the mood. For a more contemporary touch, choose a statement candelabra for the table to add drama. When it comes to china, melamine is a pretty but practical choice especially for picnics – opt for sherbet shades for a retro Fifties feel. Don’t forget the niceties such as a stack of crisp linen napkins in a floral design and personalised name cards for your guests – you may be outside, but the details still count. Use glass pebbles to anchor them and to weigh down the corners of a tablecloth if you’re using one in the event of it being windy. Brightly coloured patterned cloths give an instant design statement perfect for balmy nights alfresco dining. Finally, fresh flowers always provide an extra special finishing touch – opt for single blowsy blooms such a peonies or dahlias in hot pinks and oranges for a quick pop of colour.

START OF THE SUMMER WINES Summer Standby
Tesco Côtes de Gascogne Blanc 2014 France (11%; Tesco, £6.50) Chill this colombard/ ugni blanc blend right down and you have a wine reminiscent of a juicy, ice-cold pear, peach and melon cooler, with a waft of blossom. One to wallop back while watching cricket/tennis/children fighting or add fizzy water for a lovely spritz.
Star Buy Red
Taste the Difference Barbera d’Asti 2013 Italy (13.5%; Sainsbury’s, £8.50 Juicy but also taut, with a compact, silky texture, this is a bright barbera from north-west Italy that’s reminiscent of red and black cherries. Lovely. A real bargain at this price. Bring out the home‑made pizza or a veal chop.
Sleek White
Domaine Jean- Maurice Raffault Blanc 2017 France (12.5%; Yapp, £14.75) With subtle wild flower and green apple scents this Chinon wine is an Old World Chenin Blanc, with a crisp dry un-oaked palate of white orchard fruit underscored by a zesty acidity and mineral notes. Utterly mesmerising summer drinking.
Red Elegance
Chianti Classico, Isole e Olena 2015 (13.5%; The Wine Society £19) Paolo de Marchi is one of Chianti’s top winemakers. He seeks finesse and elegance from his vineyards and this represents incredible value. There are aromatics of cherry and herbs, with refreshing acidity.
Think Pink Tropical Rose
Muga Rioja Rosado 2014 Spain (13%; Waitrose, £9.99) I have been all over rosé the past couple of months and found this one to have beautiful red apple and tropical notes, but thicker and creamier than those from Provence.
MiP* Made in Provence Classic Rosé 2017 Côtes de Provence, France (12.5%; £13.95, Lea & Sandeman) I really can’t recommended this pale rosé enough, it’s perfect for the summer and if I am to be honest with you it has at least two dedicated shelves in my wine cooler, it’s the best.

TRAVEL REVIEW
The huge palm trees and beautiful bright flowers in the grounds reminded me why we love Florida so much.
WYNDHAM
Last Thursday, we packed up the children and far too much luggage and headed to Gatwick Airport to start our mammoth three week vacation travelling through North America. First stop Orlando. We arrived at the Wyndham Orlando Resort. It had been a while since we visited this hotel. With plans to visit theme parks and local attractions we needed a resort where relaxation was the ongoing theme. With a jam packed itinerary and a hire car that resembled a bus more than a family car, we were excited to spend 12 days together, enjoying some much needed quality family time.
ORLANDO RESORT
40 NEWPORT VISION JULY 2018
While we had been to International Drive plenty of times, we had only stayed at the Wyndham Orlando Resort twice and both times before the huge renovation. When we pulled up, I was more than pleasantly surprised. The grounds are neat and beautiful and remind me why we love Florida so much. There are huge palm trees and beautiful, bright flowers and the decor is very clean and modern. They offer everything you need for the perfect Orlando vacation! I found it very refreshing that the Wyndham Orlando Resort is more like the old school motels I used to stay at with my family when I was a child. No elevators and no long hallways. Instead, you enter your room from the outside. But there’s nothing old school about the rooms. Our room featured a king sized bed, wood floors and bright, modern furniture.
Thanks to their recent multi-million-dollar renovation, all of the resort’s rooms feature all of the latest upscale touches, including pillow-top mattresses, massaging showers, mini-fridges, 40-inch flat-screen TVs and high speed WIFI access. Our family suite even had a separate space with a bunk bed which the children were crazy about. They had their own tv (with parental controls) and even though there was no door s eparating us and them, it still had a very private feel to it. Within the first hour, we had to make a couple of calls to guest services and we were greeted by the sweetest representative who made sure we had everything we needed promptly and even called back to make sure we weren’t in need of anything else. Good customer service is everything at a hotel, wouldn’t you agree?
Our room happened to be right next door to their newly renovated indoor fitness centre. My 8-year old couldn’t wait to get inside and exercise (clearly she doesn’t get that from her mother). While I’m not the biggest fan of exercising while on vacation, the facilities were so clean and offered every type of machine I could think of. The biggest hit for the children were the two outdoor pools. I’m pretty sure they were fish in their past lives. They would stay in the water all day if we allowed it. You are able to choose from the main pool or the “quiet pool” which is slightly smaller and next to the heated spa. On the second night, the children just didn’t want to leave the pool so we made the decision to dine at the poolside restaurant, the Gatorville Poolside Bar and Grill.
Our food was so good and our server was awesome! I highly recommend the shrimp tacos! While we could have had the best time without even leaving the resort, we took advantage of the local attractions. Wyndham Orlando Resort is the official hotel of I-Drive 360, putting you right in the heart of exciting new attractions, outstanding dining, and world-class shopping. The Coca-Cola Orlando Eye, offering breath-taking, 360-degree views of Central Florida, is just a short walk away. If you are heading to a theme park, the resort offers a complimentary shuttle to Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and SeaWorld Orlando theme parks. The only complaint we have is that it flew by way too quickly. We would have loved spending more time together at the Wyndham Orlando Resort. I know we will be back very soon!

WEST END AND THE LION KING EVERY YEAR CENTRIC AIMS TO HELP A LOCAL WELSH COMMUNITY CENTRE AND THIS YEAR WE HAVE CHOSEN NEWPORT’S LEARNING DEVELOPMENT CENTRE which caters for 42 children across Newport, all with a statement for special educational need. The LDC pride themselves on the delivery of a broad based curriculum, as well as running extraction groups for those who need more specific support with self-esteem, self-help and independent living skills. To give these children opportunities to visit a place of great interest to enhance their individual learning, comes a cost. This year the LDC are looking to enhance the students creative writing, music and drama skills and would like to take all students to see the Lion King in London. The LDC have held many fund raising events to make this possible. Centric Recruitment and Edwards Coaches came together to make this happen on May 16th 2018.
