THE CARMARTHEN BAY

LIFESTYLE

Having been born and bred in Wales and working here for the last 25 years there are not many corners of the country that I have not visited. Embarrassingly, I hold my hands up and say the majority of my travels around Wales have been work related. That is until recently when I got the opportunity to let my hair down and visit Carmarthen! And this is what we found . . . . . Lush rural landscapes, crystalline coastlines and rugged foothills. Fantastic bars, eateries and entertainment. Luxurious and welcoming accommodation with fantastic entertainment.

The abundance of nature’s beauty spots, including the beaches and foothills means Carmarthen is perfect for long walks along the beaches and hillsides with family and pets, winter picnics and even exploring the local heritage sites such as Kidwelly Castle. LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 09

As one of the world’s biggest classical stars, this top tenor’s sold a whopping 80 million-plus albums, with his new album, Sì, this month topping the UK and US charts at No.1. Andrea Bocelli talks to Angela Sara West about the highlights of his glittering career, performing for Pavarotti, and his latest album featuring Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa and Josh Groban. He gave Elizabeth Taylor “golden goose bumps”, Céline Dion stated “If God had a singing voice, he would sound like Andrea Bocelli,” while David Foster describes him as having “the most beautiful voice in the world…” Andrea Bocelli’s been awarded a Golden Globe, seven Classical BRITs and World Music Awards, and a sought-after star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

ANDREA BOCELLI – TENOR AT THE TOP! He has performed for four US Presidents, three Popes and at Princess Eugenie’s wedding, in venues ranging from NYC’s Central Park and London’s Windsor Castle to the Pyramids in Cairo and even under Paris’ Eiffel Tower.

12 NEWPORT VISION DECEMBER 2018

He’s now the first classical singer to top the UK album charts in over 20 years, simultaneously clinching his first US Billboard 200 No.1.

Italian inspiration

Andrea tells me his talent became apparent at seven years-old. "I could instantly recognise all the famous voices of the time. I’d learn the great arias and try to emulate the great interpreters, singing loudly with them in our living room. Relatives and friends told me I had a pleasant voice and often asked me to sing.

Their insistence led me to think that singing might, one day, become my profession.” The Italian tenor’s first musical hero was Beniamino Gigli. “Followed by Mario Del Monaco…Enrico Caruso… Giuseppe Di Stefano…Mario Lanza…and, of course, Franco Corelli, who still is my greatest source of inspiration and with whom I had the honour of perfecting my craft.” At 14, he enjoyed his first competition success, performing O Sole Mio. "As a teenager, I played piano, singing what I loved most. My studying became more systematic and serious when I entrusted myself to Italian composer, Maestro Luciano Bettarini.”

To fund singing lessons, Andrea performed in piano bars. He studied and practised law, but the stage summoned. “I came to fame late, at 35 years-old, after experiencing many doors closed in my face and many dashed hopes." Now the biggest-selling artist in the history of classical music, from Tosca and Carmen, to Madame Butterfly and Roméo & Juliette, the opera king’s covered them all. "I never abandoned the dream of making music my profession, even at university and when singing in bars... Reality’s exceeded a thousand times even my rosiest fantasies!"

Success secrets

The eternally-humble tenor says singing’s the only way to express himself fully. "My primary school teacher once warned me, 'Always remember, Andrea, that God has given you a gift, and of this gift you have no merit.' I’ve tried to honour my gift with much dedication, seriousness, honesty and conscience.

Music is my daily bread… it’s a need, passion, joyful elation and vital élan towards beauty and making life lighter. The art of sounds, music’s always the source of an inner wealth and consolation. Good music’s fatally connected to good because it has a strong influence on our conscience, contributing to our spiritual evolution and, therefore, making us better people.” But, he says, life’s also about other important aspects. “I try to be a good father, companion and person who expresses his ethical convictions with simplicity in daily life, even beyond music." For Andrea, singing’s a “sweet privilege”. “To perform to an audience, whether heads of state or family and friends, shares a gift that Heaven has

given me. It’s the simplest and most direct way to win their affection and give back as much, and as intensely, as possible." He says the more honours he receives, the higher the expectation. “The main challenge is to put all of myself at the service of music, using my voice at its best through continuous technical and interpretation refinement. It seems I can touch people’s hearts through my singing and I’m the first to be astonished, and grateful, for their kindness. To succeed in my field, you need a pleasant voice, willpower, spirit of sacrifice, stamina, plus a pinch of narcissism!"

LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 13

King of classical crossover – the album with A-list duets The self-described ”modern but old-fashioned tenor” has showcased his mellow-yetpowerful tones at sell-out arena shows and prestigious international events, including Princess Eugenie's wedding, the Oscars, Olympic Games, World Cup and UEFA Champions League Final. He also records pop albums, collaborating with Tony Bennett and contemporary artists like Jennifer Lopez, Ariana Grande and Mary J. Blige. For his chart-topping album, SÌ, Andrea duetted with Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Aida Garifullina and Josh Groban. His first album of all-new material in 14 years sees him return to his roots, with an intimate collection of sensational songs celebrating love, family, faith and hope, including an emotional duet with his 21-yearold son, Matteo. “I wanted to go back to my memories of being a young man, playing at a piano bar. I thought, ‘Maybe it’s time for new songs…’, like starting all over again.” Heart…soul…positivity… family…melody and magic… the uplifting album includes personal tributes to his family and reflects his spirituality. “In this historical period we’re going through, we too often say ‘no’. But ‘yes’ (‘sì’) is the word you say when you have your first kiss, agree with somebody, want to make someone feel good... ‘Sì’ is the word you say every time things will end well. For 1,0001 reasons, ‘sì’ is the expression of a positive, powerful human word and feeling and emotion.”

14 NEWPORT VISION DECEMBER 2018

Andrea adores duetting... "When two voices are intertwined, they reciprocally enhance the interpreters’ expressive qualities. When this intimate and deep alchemy takes place, something magical happens..."an artistic practice that gives me much satisfaction. There are many talented artists with whom I hope to share the stage… too many to mention! To sing together, both in opera and in pop, is a very gratifying and intense experience."

On the road… dream operas and Christmas classics

The legendary tenor’s world tour takes in everywhere from the UK, US and Canada, to Germany, Italy and Spain."Every concert’s special and every stage thrills me. I try to give my best to all those honouring me with

their presence, offering them moments of joy and celebration. I live every concert with apprehension and joy of an important moment and unique encounter."

His ‘dream’ operas?

"All the compositions by Giacomo Puccini, a good selection from Verdi and Pietro Mascagni, and many of the French 19th-century works." He enjoys executing Christmas classics, including White Christmas, at his festive events. “They’re even more exciting and joyful occasions to celebrate together, warming hearts and conveying Christmas wishes through music. The concerts usually showcase the most-loved pieces, mainly from an operatic repertoire, followed by pop classics and songs that my audience anticipates."

His favourite venues?

"I appreciate operatic theatres’ acoustics... they’re magical places, where humanity’s told and its values expressed, without electronic amplification devices. Nevertheless, in large arenas I always perceive a very intense wave of positive energy from such vast audiences and can disseminate my music preferences on a large scale."

Celebrity Fight Night

Andrea’s fulfilled his ‘American dream’ of performing at the Statue of Liberty to an audience including Leonardo Di Caprio, Robert De Niro and Cameron Diaz, while his annual star-studded fundraiser, Celebrity Fight Night, draws famous faces, including John Legend, Susan Sarandon, Steven Tyler and Sir Michael Caine, to Florence or Rome.

Sometimes, it seems a paradox to me that my life may be considered so interesting to the point of making it into a movie! Time out in Tuscany

When it's time to swap A&R for some R&R, Andrea's spectacular villa in Forte dei Marmi’s just the ticket. "I love spending my rare moments of rest in the country village where I was born, or my house by the sea with my wife and children.” His children are following in his musical footsteps. "Amos and Matteo have been playing the piano for many years, while little Virginia’s also becoming interested in music. Matteo has a voice with interesting potential…”

"Last year, I was joined by Sir Elton John in the world-famous Colosseum. We’ve previously hosted Queen Rania of Jordan, Sharon Stone, Sophia Loren, Nicolas Cage, Lionel Richie and George Clooney, among many others."

Performing for Pavarotti

Andrea sang a beautiful rendition of Ave Maria at late great Luciano Pavarotti's wedding. "It was a marvellous, generous, brilliant, cheerful and touching wedding ceremony... just like the groom.

Although there were over 600 guests, it was intimate and worldly… a concert of feelings, in his home city, Modena. The fact that Pavarotti chose me to perform at such a delicate and important moment of his life was, for me, a further testimony of his esteem and genuine friendship. I still miss him very much…"

Silver screen star

Based on Andrea's amazing life, The Music of Silence features an all-star cast, including Antonio Banderas and Game of Thrones’

Toby Sebastian. "Sometimes, it seems a paradox to me that my life may be considered so interesting to the point of making it into a movie! I’ve great esteem for the actors and director, Michael Radford, author of great masterpieces like Il Postino: The Postman. It contains some songs I composed in my youth, which were perhaps a little naïve, but are dear to me.”

Despite being born with poor eyesight, becoming blind in a football accident at 12, audacious Andrea lives an adventurous lifestyle. "That's right! Although I’ve had to moderate my taste for challenges and strong emotions that, in my youth, made me quite daring, above all with sports. I love sailing on my boat, swimming, surfing, skiing, horse-riding, boxing and football. An avid reader, I’m fond of writing poems and playing chess, too."

LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 15

Keeping the faith

Andrea says faith is the greatest gift. “I’ve tried to honour this extraordinary miracle which is life, in the desire to always stay on the path of ‘good’ and cultivate faith. My life’s not free from mistakes, but I’ve no particular regrets." What’s next for this magnificent music maestro? "I hope to go on singing as long as our Lord will want it, and to continue, along with the foundation bearing my name and the many friends that support it, to offer my little contribution to make the world a better place. The world of culture and entertainment’s facing radical transformations and new challenges, but I’m eternally optimistic because, as history’s extensively shown, good music will not die!"

Newport Vision Magazine is the brainchild of Lela Mackenzie. Seeing a gap in the local market Lela set about making a digital and print magazine that promoted local businesses, people and events. What started off as an idea to positively promote her beloved home city, Newport Vision Magazine has now evolved into Newport's only luxury lifestyle magazine. The magazine now not only highlights the great businesses that Newport has to offer, but also a lifestyle that most aspire to have. "I was tired of the reputation that Newport had and as a mother to two sons, I wanted to inspire them by showing them the success stories that were coming out of Newport and South Wales." "I was born and bred in Newport and I have a lot of hard working, successful friends and family who, earn well and like to spend their hard earned cash on buying nice things and visiting nice places.

So the magazine is a collaboration of interviews, features and advertorials and although we are funded by advertisers we make sure we support charities and start-up businesses. Start-up's are definitely something I love to support, as being one myself, I understand the difficulties that new businesses face. Being a business owner in an industry that I had little experience in has been a steep learning curve. I am a true believer in you can do anything you put your mind to. Being hard working, genuine with people and building strong working relationships to me, is key. The businesses in Newport are beginning to thrive again and us all supporting each other will only make us stronger."

to develop a broad range of expertise. Recently accepted on NatWest's Entrepreneur Accelerator Scheme Lela has no plans of slowing down. "The success that the magazine has had has been amazing and although we may not be the biggest publication in the area we are definitely a force to be reckoned with. 2019 is going to be an exciting one for us, we are offering more services to our clients, launching another two magazines, as well as starting to run corporate and leisure events."

THE QUAY TO HOSPITALITY The banks of the river Usk in Newport are beginning to attract some great new businesses with the newest of them being Quay Apartments at Clarence House. 32 NEWPORT VISION DECEMBER 2018

Whether visitors are attending Newport for business or pleasure they now have an alternative to the accommodation offered by hotels in the area. Quay Apartments offer fully furnished serviced apartments at a highly affordable rate and are designed to provide the comforts of home with the luxury of a hotel stay. Situated on the top two floors of Clarence House the apartments have fantastic views of Newport’s city centre, have 24 hour security and car parking. Each of the 14 apartments are ensuite with fully equipped kitchens, offering the most modern facilities and comfortable living dining rooms, ensuring a relaxing break whether it be for overnight or a longer term stay.

Newport is the newest location for the chain that have apartments in Manchester, Leeds and Salford Quays, the initiative of Ali and his 3 brothers. When Newport Vision asked Ali, Why Newport? "A business opportunity came up in Newport and we did our research and found that newport had a lot to offer so we went ahead with it. "We were looking for an up and coming city and with all the development going on in Newport, plus it being sandwiched between Cardiff and Bristol it seemed perfect as not only is it attracting it’s own visitors for business and leisure but it also acts as an overflow for Cardiff when their hotels are full.

When we actually visited the city it was a done deal, the warmth and help we received from everyone we came into contact with was absolutely overwhelming and we really felt like it was a community that we were being welcomed to and that we wanted to become a part of." The decision has been a great one for the brothers and they have wasted no time in quickly redeveloping14 of the apartments in just two weeks. Recruiting a team of staff from Newport has gone seamlessly, Ali says, "it was important to us to hire the right people, as we are a family business and that's how we treat our staff also, we all work together, side by side, our staff give us 100% and they get the same back from us, our team in Newport are great!"

The hard working and ambitious brothers have no plans to stop at just the apartments. "The regeneration that is happening in Newport is really exciting and we can't wait to be a part of the growth that is happening here in this city" said Ali. When I asked Ali about adding more apartments on some of the floors that were vacant, he told me, "The 10th floor is in progress and all going well, work will start in February/March next year. We'd love to occupy some of the lower floors, but maybe add something different to complement the apartments. We are happy that there are other great business right next to us such as The Riverside Sports Bar and Kitchen, Sixteen Brasserie and The Pod. A short walk from The Neon, Quarters Coffee, Monusk Tapas and Horton's Coffee "Having come from a larger city, there are still a few things that Newport is missing and having already met local business owners and seeing their passion, it won't be long before Newport is thriving". It is definitely an exciting time for Newport and Ali is right, the fantastic businesses that have graced our riverfront are thriving and definitely adding support to the nearby Friars Walk and the City Centre. Long may it continue and we can't wait to watch as Quay Apartments, Clarence House and the other businesses on the riverfront continue to grow and prosper.

FOOD REVIEW

So ordinarily, if we are going to go out for a meal, we usually wait until the weekend as we enjoy the atmosphere and buzz that fills Newport's venues only on a Friday and Saturday night, or so we thought. Whilst organising an evening meal we decided to go against the norm and book a Wednesday evening, throwing caution to the wind and being the rebels that we are, we also decided to have what we would normally eat on the weekend and we booked to go to Newport's best Indian restaurant, Hatti's. Now we have been to Hatti's on previous occasions and it's remained a firm favourite with myself, family and friends and this is why. Hatti are also open on Christmas Day, to find out more or to book a table please call 01633 222788. 77-78 Lower Dock St, Newport NP20 2AE www.hattinewport.co.uk

LUXURY IS IN THE DETAIL AT HATTI Now we have been to Hatti's on previous occasions and it's remained a firm favourite with myself, family and friends and this is why. 34 NEWPORT VISION DECEMBER 2018

After parking just across the road in the George Street Furnishers car park, (which Hatti's have agreed use of in the evening times) we were welcomed at the entrance by Hatti's Manager Zee and his team and seated in the downstairs bar area where we waited for our guests to arrive. Whilst deliberating which drinks to order we were surprised to find that for mid-week, it was surprisingly atmospheric with a mixture of couples, families, corporates and parties enjoying themselves in these beautiful surroundings. Now if you have only driven past the exterior of Hatti's you will notice the outside is decorated quite traditionally, the inside however is modern but welcoming and just like the blue lights indicate, quite different from anywhere else in Newport. The comfortable leather seating area with crisp interior decorating all adds to the experience and you are instantly aware of the high standards throughout. Once settled at our table with drinks being served we began to look at the extensive menu. As always, I like to ask what the waiter recommends.

Rather than offering a favoured dish as most waiters would, I was asked a variety of questions to see if I had any allergies, dietary requirements, preference of tastes and spices? I was elated to find that Hatti's do not do things by halves, not only do they happily offer to make up a dish to suit your taste using your favourite ingredients but they also cater for celiacs, vegetarians and vegans. After ordering our bespoke dishes and curries we were promptly brought a selection of gluten free, plain and flavoured popadoms with 8 different chutney's. We marvelled at the spice and herb infused poppadoms and was offered to order more drinks before our starters arrived. By our ordering, Zee could see we were open to trying new things and offered to make us some bespoke cocktails. We readily agreed and were delighted to see that at Hatti's, nothing is too much trouble and it is not a restaurant that concentrates on numbers but one that is truly about the experience as a whole and ensuring that each individual has an enjoyable evening.

Between the 4 of us, we discussed how we had dined in 5 star restaurants worldwide and the service and standard that we were receiving this evening was on par with the finest establishments that we had visited in America, London, Dubai and Indonesia. Who would have thought? A local independent in Newport, holding their own!! Our starter platter arrived and we were not disappointed. The presentation was excellent and the taste test did not disappoint, with Tandoori Spiced Lamb Chops, Samosas, Sheek Kebab, Garlic Chicken Tikka and quite possibly the most amazing Onion Bhaji's we have ever tasted the platter is definitely what we would recommend to those who spend ages deliberating what to have because they like to try a little of everything. Our Mains soon followed and it was obvious to see that the Chef had been briefed perfectly by our waiter as to what our preferences were and the tasting of the masterpieces specially prepared for us once again began. We had ordered two

lamb dishes, one with a mild and creamy butter chicken style sauce and the other a spicy lamb shank taken off the bone and cooked in a delicious tomato sauce which had a flavoursome kick to it. A Sheek Kebab main with another tailored sauce and a Duck curry, which were accompanied by a selection of flavoured rice and naan breads were also served. Zee convinced us to try his favourite which was a naan topped with cheese - we were slightly sceptical but seriously, don't knock it until you try it, Zee, you have converted us! At this point, you can imagine, we were struggling to see how dessert could fit in, so once again, asked the advice of our waiter, specifying that we would prefer something light. Without hesitation he said, "leave it to me" and as everything else so far that evening had surpassed our expectations we didn't bat an eyelid at not knowing what was on it's way. Once again a sharing platter arrived with a selection of bite size desserts. It seemed we did have enough room after all. So as you can see, Hatti's remains our favourite Indian restaurant by far, not just because of the outstanding food that is prepared using the finest quality ingredients and not because of the great atmosphere and plush interior that the venue has, even because of the outstanding service provided by the team as a whole. It is in fact all of these things combined that prove to us, simply, that luxury is in the detail! LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 35

TRAVEL REVIEW

before enjoying a typical Arabic lunch of mezze, tasty dips, warm flatbreads, tender grilled meats and vibrant salads. In equal measures of terror and childish glee, we scream as our Landcruiser increases its speed to over 120km/h heading straight for the huge sand dune directly ahead at full force. We launch up the steep sandy slope, bouncing and flouncing around, letting out even louder shrills, quickly followed by gasps of excited laughter. The adrenaline rush box has been well and truly ticked! The day after the exciting new route from Cardiff to Doha was launched, with onward connections to 150 destinations worldwide, I and a group of top selling agents were given the chance to experience the new kid on the Arabian block first hand.

We’re still not all 100% sure how to pronounce either the country or the city but we were on our way, directly from Cardiff – what a treat for a long-haul destination! Following a short stop for dune pics, one lost bumper and one tyre reinflation, our heart rates are allowed to decrease as we spend an hour soaking up the sun and paddling in the inland sea – it’s so strange to see the sea and the desert meet –

Heading back to Doha we are once again reminded of the huge sporting event which will take place here in 2022. Currently it seems rather wasteful to have 7-lane motorways with only enough traffic for two but the commitment to investment and infrastructure shows that Qatar means business when it comes to football. As the first World Cup in the Middle East, it’s easy to see why they want to put on a good show. As we pass one of the mid-construction stadiums (all will be within an hour’s drive of the capital) it’s plain to see there has been no expense spared… even when it comes to the environmentally friendly cooling technology which will be used we’re told. As we are visiting in May, we understand

why it was a smart decision to move the tournament date to November/December… Even sunbathing is thirsty work! Back at the Ritz-Carlton we enjoy a cooling mojito in the pool bar, take time to enjoy the luxurious amenities (and a complimentary camel-shaped biscuits) of our rooms as we get ready, then head out for dinner at Al Sufra, a stunning restaurant within the opulent Kempinski Hotel on the Pearl,

The next morning is an early start and we’re whisked to the Shangri-La for an early breakfast. We’d been wondering why it was such an early start until we were taken directly to the top floor of the lift – the 48th no less – then asked to climb a further two flights… and find ourselves on a helipad! Set up right in the middle is a single table, laid out immaculately and laden with a plethora of breakfast treats. We are collectively speechless. The skyscrapers we’d gazed up at from the ground the previous evening we could now look across and down on, along with the airport and Bay. This really was an experience never to be forgotten. It was the first breakfast the Shangri-La had ever organised on its heli-pad (which, incidentally, has never actually
