THE BARONESS OF MAYFAIR,

LADY MICHELLE MONE OBE, TAKES THE INTERIORS WORLD BY STORM! Angela Sara West talks to one of the UK’s most successful entrepreneurs, Lady Michelle Mone. Multi-talented and multi-award-winning Michelle Mone is one of the UK's most successful self-made women. She’s not only the ultraglamorous Baroness of Mayfair, but also founded the UK’s leading designer lingerie line, Ultimo Brands International. She’s also a global ambassador for Bentley and British Airways, a reality TV star and has a highly-successful jewellery collection for QVC. Now, she’s set to conquer the world of interiors with her immaculate interior designs. Despite growing up in an impoverished part of Glasgow, Scotland, and leaving school at 15 with no qualifications, she lives a life of luxury and enjoys an expansive, and everexpanding, multi-million-pound business empire. Her rise to fame and fortune began with Ultimo in 1999. She went on to create the award-winning fake tanning range, UTan, and a best-selling jewellery range for QVC. She now has a new string to her business bow… Launched last year, Michelle Mone Interiors offers high-end, bespoke interior design services around the world. 10 NEWPORT VISION OCTOBER 2018

“Although I am labelled an entrepreneur, global speaker, author, innovator and parliamentarian, being a designer has long been a big part of my life and, therefore, my success,” she explains.

no-one can rival that as no-one else is me! We are constantly pushing to be bigger and better than our competitors. Business is a really exciting thing and my passion to launch new ventures motivates me.”

A business baroness Michelle’s entrepreneurial spirit kicked in at a very early age. “I’ve always had the drive, from just 10 years-old. Failure drives me and I always keep going as I never will go there!" What’s her ethos and what’s at the heart of all her businesses? “Hard work, innovative design, originality and personality. Those attributes run through all of my businesses.” She says it’s a combination of those qualities that sets her brands apart from similar offerings. "Everything I do has my own personal and professional stamp on it…

But business hasn’t always been booming for the Baroness. “In the beginning, finance was my biggest challenge… having a great idea and vision but not having the finance to take it to the next level is often the case with businesses. A distributor ran off with £1.4m of my money! However, that was also my biggest lesson. In business, you learn a lot from the low moments.”

Hard work, innovative design, originality and personality. Those attributes run through all of my businesses.

give up. Always deliver for your customers and team, no matter what. Be unique and passionate and never stop! Business isn’t easy, and success is even harder. It can be a long journey, so you need to be hard working, different and determined – that really is the secret.”

In 2015, the inspirational born achiever was awarded a Life Peerage to the House of Lords. “Receiving my OBE was one of my proudest moments and becoming Lady Michelle Mone of Mayfair and a member of the House of Lords were also huge honours for me.”

Sell-out success for Diamonique The super-smart business woman’s phenomenallysuccessful jewellery collection, Michelle Mone for Diamonique, has proved so popular that one of her necklace ranges sold out on the QVC retail channel in just 92 seconds! “My range for Diamonique is incredible and I am so thrilled with its sell-out success. I was so proud. I never lose the feeling of feeling incredibly happy when a project I’ve been working on for a long time does really well.”

The lingerie tycoonturned-Parliamentarian subsequently set up The Mone Review, focusing on helping start-up businesses. Her top tips for setting up a business? “To succeed in business, you need determination like no other. It may sound cliché, but never 12 NEWPORT VISION OCTOBER 2018

Michelle’s personal style is all about customised glamour. “I would say I’m glamorous, but always with a sophisticated, tailored edge. There’s always a line I don’t cross when it comes to glamour. My jewellery pieces are very glamorous and really are statement pieces, so they can totally enhance an outfit and really make it something special. I often wear block colours and add the jewellery in for the sparkle.” Grand international designs As one of Britain's wealthiest men, Michelle’s partner, business tycoon Doug Barrowman, is the driving force behind Knox Private Office.

Michelle and Doug set up Michelle Mone Interiors (MMI Global Limited) as part of Doug’s Knox Group. Multimillionaire Michelle’s new move into the interiors sector has already seen huge success. “Michelle Mone Interiors, for which I collaborate with the fantastic leading designer, Julie Chapman, is a huge passion of mine. This partnership allows me to combine my business attributes and unique design flair with Julie’s unrivalled experience and expertise as Head Designer for my company.” With offices in London’s Chelsea, Monaco, Dubai and the Isle of Man, Michelle’s new global business delivers a high-end, very personal and bespoke interiors service that balances luxurious elegance

with intelligent design and creative infusion, promising to turn clients’ homes and businesses into places of inspiration. “I am as passionate about my new businesses, my jewellery range and Michelle Mone Interiors, as I was years ago launching Ultimo. It’s a journey… and a really exciting one!” Dubai luxury real estate & mall Michelle’s latest joint business venture with Doug is a £250m Bitcoin-Priced property project in the heart of Dubai, comprising two luxury apartment towers and a huge shopping mall. The Dubai development is “the pinnacle of design, architecture and commerciality” and purchasers can decorate their

new home using Michelle’s design service, paid for using the cryptocurrency. The luxurious apartments come complete with access to a gym, swimming pool and residents' lounge, and boast magnificent views over the Dubai Hills and the city’s stunning skyline. A jet-set baroness! “Permanently” on the road for work, Michelle’s businesses take her all around the globe. “A few weeks ago, I was in Dubai and then flew to the South of France before heading to London. Now, I'm on the Isle of Man, where my home is with Doug. I’ve also recently visited South Africa, the US, St. Barths and Thailand. I’m very lucky!” The global entrepreneur extolls the virtues of Emirates. “They are just the best at everything.”

Her favourite hotels and stretches of sand? “The Palace at One&Only Royal Mirage in Dubai is outstanding. All of my favourite beaches are in St. Barths.” “Although I’m busy, always travelling, always with a suitcase, I never feel I’m working because I love it so much! I enjoy experiencing different places… when you do that, every day is a school day!” A prolific portfolio of property, yachts & a private jet… Although Michelle travels the world, she says there’s no place like her first home. “Scotland is my favourite destination. It's beautiful, it’s where I'm from and I started my first business there. The Isle of Man is home now, though, and I feel I can relax there.”

LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 13

She and her Scottish boyfriend, venture capitalist Doug, divide their time between six luxury homes; a sprawling £120m château-style estate on the Isle of Man, a Belgravia penthouse apartment and a sevenbedroom villa in the South of France. They also own palatial homes in Thailand, St. Barths in the Caribbean and in Scotland, near Gleneagles. Doug owns a luxury car collection, including a fleet of five Ferraris, two super yachts and a private jet. Michelle enjoys the process of renovating her own homes. She says she embraces a range of styles and isn’t afraid of a pop of colour, but always opts for British craftsmanship, timelessness and sophistication “with a sexy twist and a touch of real glamour”. With their exceptional eye for design and attention to detail, Michelle and Julie have put their interior design stamp on the stunning Isle of Man mansion, which comes complete with a fully-equipped spa, swimming pool and high-tech gym, along with a helipad, amphitheatre and staff quarters. In London, Michelle resided in a £2million Mayfair penthouse apartment with its own cinema and nightclub on one of London's most exclusive streets, before moving into the London riverside penthouse, with an unbeatable, front-row Tower Bridge view which, she says, “Looks like something out of a movie.” When it’s time for some well-deserved R&R, Michelle heads to her holiday homes to enjoy the high life in the sun.

“We’re very lucky to have a home in the South of France and a new one in St Barths, which is no.1… we just love spending time there.” A healthy passion With beautiful blonde locks cascading over her shoulders and flawlessly-applied makeup, the first lady of lingerie never fails to look amazing. She says she found herself in a much more positive place when she developed a recent new passion for health and fitness.

"My one main tip is exercise for one hour a day, wherever you are, whatever your mood. A healthy body = a healthy mind. Exercise and health has changed my life. Ambition, happiness and confidence all create instant glamour for me." The elegant entrepreneur is inspired by the “juice master”, Jason Vale, and advocates a healthy diet, including ginger and malt vinegar shots, while her top beauty must-haves include her UTan tanning range. “It always gives you that healthy glow whenever, wherever you are." Sailing off into the sunset… super yacht style! Michelle says she has “no regrets” in life and has now met

her match in Doug who, she says, makes her feel like she is “in a fairy tale… a beautiful dream”. She once said she plans to retire at 48 and her dream is to build a sailing boat with Doug, to their own design, and sail around the world... Is this still the plan? "Let’s see! As long as I’m happy, travelling the world and my businesses are successful, that’s what matters." Michelle’s motto is “Work hard, play hard”. How does she manage to maintain a successful work-life balance? “When you love what you do, you’re living the dream and it doesn’t feel like hard work. That’s the secret to balance!” © Angela Sara West 2018 www.angelasarawest.com

You’d be forgiven for thinking I was about to describe a luxury art gallery in New York. One thousand thread count Egyptian bedding, Bulragi toiletries, camomile-infused mattresses and a choice of 12 pillow types for an indulgently restful night’s sleep… A luxury hotel in Singapore perhaps? 18 NEWPORT VISION OCTOBER 2018

A Master Chef who has worked for French President General de Gaulle, Versace dinner plates, private vintage wine and gourmet fare pairings… An exclusive Parisian dining establishment maybe? Actually, these features make up just a small amount of what’s on

offer aboard Oceania’s fabulous Marina ship which I had the pleasure of visiting this week. Reading some of these accolades may go a little way to understanding why the budget for building this ship went over by a cool $200 million!

I would say sack the designer, but the result is well worth the overspend! Despite the huge expense, everything onboard is tasteful and understated. Even the $250,000 vase and table between the twin grand staircases isn’t screaming ‘look at me’ in a brash or brazen way. In a way, the ship reminds me of Diana. She didn’t need to shout about her good looks and she wore her jewels elegantly, without the need to show off.

There is only one announcement a day and a very serene time can be enjoyed by all, be it encouraging your inner creative flair with the resident artist, taking part in the highly popular knife-skills culinary class, relaxing in one of the on-deck hot tubs, taking in a show or reading in the library… The choices go on.

The Finest Cuisine at Sea is a bold statement to make, but Oceania relish in being the foodie’s cruise line. And they’re in good hands with Jacques Pépin as the Culinary Director. Jacques, a rustic French restaurant on board named after the same, is said to be a firm favourite among British guests… Save yourself for the cheese course, it’s to die for!

There is a myriad of itineraries on offer with Oceania Cruises, from the plains of Patagonia to the cultural mysteries of the Far East. Or why not take in everything on the iconic Around the World in 180 Days cruise!

Wine connoisseurs will be salivating over the wine pairings on offer at La Reserve; and with seating for just 24 people you’ll never be left parched. If you’re looking for something really extra special then Privée is a beautifully intimate space at the aft of the ship, set for just 10 people. I loved the natural light and beautiful white furnishings used in this space. Often people are put off by larger ships, however this one has half the number of

UK’S FIRST PROTON BEAM THERAPY PATIENT HERALDS A NEW ERA FOR CANCER CARE IN BRITAIN

Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales

The Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales in Newport is the first oncology clinic to bring high energy proton beam therapy to the UK 26 NEWPORT VISION OCTOBER 2018

and announced the commencement of treatment in April this year with its first patient. This has been a landmark moment for cancer patients in this country, who will now no longer need to travel abroad to mainland Europe or the USA for such treatment. Proton beam therapy is a type of radiotherapy used in cancer treatment, delivering heavily

charged protons in a more targeted manner to reduce damage to peripheral tissue and organs as well as side effects. Protons deliver the same damage to cancer cells as radiotherapy; however, they can be controlled to stop at a defined point in the body. Due to its precision and accuracy, research has highlighted that proton beam therapy is particularly good for treating

Simon Hardacre, the first patient to receive proton beam therapy here in the UK The proton beam therapy suite

cancers in children and can effectively treat hard-to-reach cancers in the brain or near the spinal cord. There are more than 90,000 cancer patients in the UK every year who are treated with radical radiotherapy and around 10% of patients treated with radical radiotherapy – the figure accepted at European level – could be better treated with proton therapy. The first patient at Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales in Newport, Simon Hardacre, who received treatment for prostate cancer, said: “When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I wanted to research the best possible form of treatment for me, which is how I came across proton beam therapy. I am delighted to say the treatment has gone exceptionally well in that I have been given intensive cancer care without suffering any gruelling side effects.

“It will take some time before I know that the therapy has been a complete success but what I know is, that my body has been spared damage to healthy tissue and I have been able to go about my daily life during treatment. I was told to expect that my body would show signs of improvement in terms of how I was feeling within three months and that happened in even less time. I realise that protons are not the answer in every case – and I still have to wait to see how things finally work out, but I genuinely believe we are in a new era of cancer care in this country now that proton beam therapy is finally available.” Dr Jason Lester, senior consultant oncologist who treated Mr. Hardacre at the Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales, said: “Treating the first person in the UK with high energy proton beam therapy is a significant event, and it opens up a new frontier for treatment in the UK. In the case of Mr. Hardacre, we feel really positive about the way he coped with treatment.

He will need regular check-ups in order to monitor his progress, and it was great to see him benefit from having treatment so close to home with minimal disruption to his daily life. We hope Mr. Hardacre is the first of many to see the benefits from high energy proton beam therapy treatment here in the UK.” Since treating the first patient, the Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales has commenced high energy proton beam therapy treatment with a number of patients from across the country and beyond. The first patient to receive proton therapy for breast cancer in the UK also began treatment at the Newport centre in August. Eight Rutherford Cancer Centres are being built across the country over the next few years, in order to provide a treatment centre within 90 minutes of 75% of the UK population.

FOOD REVIEW

As we travelled along Chepstow Road in Llandevaud we were welcomed by a beautiful venue which comprises of a welcoming lounge area with a fully equipped wine bar, the restaurant and a brasserie. We were shown to the lounge area by a friendly member of staff and enjoyed a variety of alcoholic beverages, our favourite being the parma violet infused gin; definitely a must for the seasoned gin drinkers. As we enjoyed the classy surroundings and the relaxed atmosphere it was apparent that this might end up being a late night after all with the possibility of a taxi being called rather than the drive home! As we enjoyed our drinks we were shown to our table and the feast began! We were immediately brought a selection of homemade breads which were absolutely delightful, after trying my hardest to abstain from bread throughout the summer I thought I’d treat myself and what a treat it was – my favourites being the sour dough and the beer and onion roll, you simply must try these.

THE FORESTERS Having heard about the recent refurbishment and that the brasserie was ‘the place to go for outstanding casual fine dining’, we were excited to be invited to The Foresters for a dining experience in September. 32 NEWPORT VISION OCTOBER 2018

Menu at The Foresters Bread Sour Dough Beer and Onion White Starters Tomato Panacotta with a Basil Sorbet Chicken Liver Parfait with a Red Onion Marmalade Lobster Ravioli with Camarthan Ham and Pickled Veg Swede and Cumin Soup Mains Salted Cod, Fennel, Welsh Mussels, White wine sauce Seasoned Pesto Tagliatelle with Wild Mushrooms Pork Tenderloin, Swede, Celeriac with Baked Potato Mash and a Pearl Barley Jus Cornfed Chicken, Baked Potato Mash, Red Wine Jus with Wild Mushrooms and Leek Fondue Desserts Thyme Rice Pudding, Vanilla and Raspberry Ice Cream Baked Vanilla Cheesecake with Orange and Honey Gel and a Chocolate Soil

On to our starters and fine dining experience began. A fantastic selection of starters arrived and after tasting all four, we deliberated as to which was our favourite. The Lobster Ravioli and Swede and Cumin Soup were the favourites followed closely by the Chicken Liver Parfait, and whilst we enjoyed the complimenting flavours of the Tomato Panacotta with a Basil Sorbet, the other dishes stood out for us. Mains promptly followed and this time our deliberation turned to debate. Whilst two of us favoured the salted cod with mussels and fennel in a white wine sauce, the other two felt strongly that the cornfed chicken stood out.

The succulent chicken was cooked perfectly with a flavoursome and crispy skin, sat perfectly on a bed of roast potato mash with a red wine jus, which was absolutely delicious, framed by a very tasty wild mushroom and leek fondue. The Pork was a close second, cooked to perfection and full of flavour with the tagliatelle being lightly seasoned with pesto but partnered perfectly with wild mushrooms. At this stage we were quite full and could have happily passed on dessert yet we soldiered on. We shared a baked vanilla cheesecake with an orange and honey gel and chocolate soil which was amazing, rich and tasty and everything a cheesecake should be. The thyme rice pudding was my favourite and was paired with a tasty vanilla and raspberry ice-cream. So how would we rate The Foresters? The surroundings, atmosphere, service and food was outstanding and made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening, in fact we’ve booked in to try their Sunday lunch next and we can’t wait to return! INSPIRATION GUCCI Inspired by Gucci’s first restaurant, The Gucci Garden, in Florence, we are absolutely loving the bottle green colour scheme this Autumn. Using luxurious velvets and pairing with opulent gold and onyx accessories, creates an art deco ambience bringing a luxurious feel to any home. This bold look has continued on from the tropical inspired trend that began in 2017 and leaves us in no doubt that this lush emerald green is here to stay in our homes well into 2019 and beyond! 34 NEWPORT VISION OCTOBER 2018

CRUISE AUSTRALIA

Ocean Alliance has been appointed the MYBA Central Agent for the 105-foot Akhir M/Y MOHASUWEI. The yacht is the newest addition to an impressive fleet managed by the Sydney-based brokerage house in a growing Australian charter market. Launched in 2009 by Cantieri di Pisa, MOHASUWEI arrived in Australia in 2017 undergoing a large internal refit to produce a very modern and welcoming interior before launching into the charter market. She has accommodation for eight to ten guests in four cabins, all with private ensuites, with the Owner and VIP staterooms enjoying a full beam expanse. Additionally, the yacht is available for event charter for up to 36 people. The interior space features 36 NEWPORT VISION OCTOBER 2018

multiple living areas including a large main salon with two separate zones and a cinema room complete with comfortable sofa lounge, surround sound system and its own private ensuite. A unique feature of MOHASUWEI’s interior is the selection of playful and distinctive photography pieces from renowned 1960s photographer, Terry O’Neill. Once outside, the large sun deck offers panoramic views and features both casual dining as well as a large sun pad. The versatile outdoor area on the main deck can either be utilised for formal dining or a more relaxed lounge space. Meanwhile, the impressive beach club, usually reserved for larger superyachts, allows guests to comfortably move between the yacht and the water. The yacht is well equipped to offer watersports for children and adults alike, including the support of her 10.3 metre Technohull chase boat.

Like many of the superyachts available for charter in Australia, MOHASUWEI’s homeport is Sydney and the yacht will be available in the Harbour, Pittwater (north of Sydney), the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef. “MOHASUWEI’s silhouette is distinctly Italian and she is distinguished in the market for this reason. However, it is her interior which is truly spectacular. Her Owners undertook an extensive interior refit and the yacht now exudes casual charm and elegance not to mention an impressive display of vintage photography,” offered Mr Joachim Howard, Managing Director of Ocean Alliance. Australia’s superyacht charter market has rapidly grown in recent years and Ocean Alliance has continued to be a leader in charter management and marketing.

Ocean Alliance’s Charter Experience Manager, Laurie Foulon, explained, “All the feedback we receive from our MYBA colleagues is a trend towards authentic and unique experiences. This is, in part, driving the growth and interest in Australia as a yachting destination for it has so much to offer in this arena. Furthermore, the yachting lifestyle is enjoying a renaissance in Australia and more yachts are arriving on our shores and being made available for charter. More yachts equal more options for the chartering clients.” Australia is often considered a year-round cruising destination as yachts can chase the summer weather. From April to October, chartering superyachts head north to the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands

The Owners are passionate about cruising in Australia and want to promote Australia as a luxury travel destination. on the east coast, or to The Kimberley and Ningaloo Reef on the west coast. This is when the Humpback and unique populations of dwarf Minke Whales are migrating and the visibility for divers is optimum. From November to March, the temperatures in northern Australia encourage the yachts south to enjoy the more temperate climate and events such as New Year’s Eve on Sydney Harbour, the Australian Open and the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. “The Owners are passionate about cruising in Australia and want to promote Australia as a luxury travel destination. It is perhaps something unique to the Australian yachting scene – Owners become advocates for the country,” stated Captain Matt Conroy of MOHASUWEI. LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 37

PRINCESS EUGENIE, UNDERSTATED PRINCESS OR GLAMOUR QUEEN? Since they announced their engagement on Jan 22 2018, we have heard very little about the upcoming wedding of Princess Eugenie of York and Jack Brooksbank. Overshadowed by her cousin Harry’s wedding to Megan, which took place earlier on in 2018, it is now time for Eugenie to take centre stage and enjoy the limelight. With all eyes once again on St George’s Chapel in Windsor, October 12th promises to dazzle, like only a royal wedding can. But the million dollar question remains, what will the beautiful bride be wearing?
