LOCAL BUSINESSES - LOCAL EVENTS - LOCAL PEOPLE Positively Encouraging Growth and Prosperity

our vision Here it is! Our 9th Issue of newport vision. So now that the snow is clearing it is safe to say that Spring is finally here!

So we were right, our vision is shared by our city’s residents

And just as Spring signifies a new lease of life we thought that it would be the perfect time to apply that to Newport Vision in the form of our new partner, Emma. Emma brings with her a wealth of experience and excitement so buckle up as we are sure that you are going to enjoy the next part of our journey with her on board. Over the next couple of months you will notice some big changes (we won’t spoil all of the surprises) which we can’t wait to share with you. We would ask that you continue to stay involved by sending in your; photos, poems, stories and ideas. After all, this is Newport’s Magazine for Newport and it’s residents. We really do need you! So thank you once again and enjoy the March issue.

Kymin celebrating 25 years

Kymin Financial Services are a firm of advisers based in the City of Newport and we celebrated our 25th Anniversary on St David’s Day, 1st March 2018. A brief history of Kymin Kymin Financial Services are a firm of advisers based in the City of Newport and we celebrated our 25th Anniversary on St David’s Day, 1st March 2018. Kymin originated in Monmouth, the name being taken from the National Trust monument overlooking the town, called The Kymin. We opened our office in Newport on the day The Queen granted it City Status, 14th May 2002. Kymin offers a wide range of specialist services and our Financial Planners give advice to individual clients on Investments, Inheritance Tax and trust planning in addition to advising on retirement planning including pensions, as well as long-term care, mortgages and protection. We also advise Businesses on all types of pension schemes as well as other employee benefits. We believe in building long term relationships with our clients, many of whom have been with us for 25 years. We have a dedicated and skilled team of Financial Planners, research and

technical support as well as the administration team who work together to effectively manage our client’s finances. The key to Kymin’s approach is a thorough and well-informed investment process with a transparent charging structure. In summary, Kymin always puts the client first. We are fortunate to receive many new clients by referral from our existing customers as well as from a number of professional connections that we work closely with. Kymin has been a strong supporter of St David’s Hospice Care over many years and members of our team have been involved in many St David’s events including, the Monmouth Raft Race, the Three Peaks of Wales Challenge and the Dragon Boat Race, as well as being a co-sponsor of City of Newport Half Marathon. Staff retention is as important as building long term relationships with our clients and other professional connections.

The two founders, Gerald Davies and Simon Aston are still with Kymin, Managing Director, Robin Hall has been with the firm for over 12 years. This month, one of our admin team is celebrating 15 years with the Company. We like to think of Kymin as a family firm, a bit like the old-fashioned country solicitor where we have a friendly but professional relationship with our clients. We look forward to the next 25 years serving the area and we approach the future with confidence, both for Newport and Kymin! newport vision March 2018 07

Project FairTrade at St Mary’s Primary School So Fairtrade fortnight took place from 26th February until 11th March and St Mary’s Primary School decided to do something special to celebrate. Headteacher Mrs Donna Evans kindly invited Newport Vision to listen to Year 3’s presentations in order to teach us more about Fairtrade. The children were asked to prepare speeches on Fairtrade and they did not disappoint! They presented informative and confident speeches about why we should buy Fairtrade and even showed examples of Fairtrade products. The research and effort that went into the speeches, posters and powerpoint presentations were second to none and Newport Vision was very impressed. We listened to some shocking facts including how millions of

farmers and workers who produce the food we love still don’t earn enough to feed their own families. It’s time for this injustice to end said the pupils! There are over 1.65 million farmers and workers spread across more than 74 countries who now participate in Fairtrade - why not keep your eyes peeled next time you go shopping and try and spot how many products have the Fairtrade Logo on them. Fairtrade Fortnight has definitely put a spotlight on this issue at St Mary’s and Newport Vision felt so welcomed by the children we congratulated the best 3 in each class with a National Book Token Gift Card. Katie Colella, Amazon Queen!

A new year always brings with it new hopes, goals and ambition. Fad diets, exercise regimes and new positive outlooks are always top of the list but for more and more of us we want more than that – we want a career change! Newport Vision got the chance to meet up with our local Mumpreneur, Business Mentor and Blogger Katie Colella to find out how she achieved her newest title as Amazon Best Selling Co-author! So Katie, huge congratulations on topping the Amazon #1 Bestseller on Kindle. Tell us how this all came about? Well I started this business, Katie Colella Social in 2016 after realising that I had invaluable skills that could help other entrepreneurs and small

12 newport vision March 2018

business owners. It’s been such an exciting time as I have since been awarded 3 online business awards and have been nominated for the ‘Online Business Mum’ award with Bizmums. Wow that is a fantastic achievement, especially in such a short period of time, but let’s start from the beginning Katie tell us how you got started?

I started my business journey at the tender age of 18, buying a sandwich bar business. Since then, I have been self-employed off and on, with more time spent working for myself rather than others, owning a guesthouse and selling online. So you knew from the get go that you were going to work for yourself? Yes definitely, I have always had a strong self-belief and been an achiever who wasn’t scared to work hard.

G So how did you make the change to working online? In 2012, I started an e-commerce business selling various items online, which later became more niche and ‘ihearthomes’ was born, selling shabby chic & vintage gifts & homeware. I really enjoyed the social media side of this, and realising this was the direction business was heading, signed myself up to go to university for the first time. In 2014 I graduated with a Merit in a Foundation Degree in Social Media at Cardiff University. Ihearthomes was by all accounts a success, why did you decide to sell it? I fell out of love with the business and had lost my ‘mojo’ for it. I needed a change and felt that the business could do with some new passion injected into it. I believe in doing what you enjoy and I just wasn’t enjoying the business in the same way anymore. I now feel so much more aligned as a business mentor, helping women starting out in business with the skills they need to succeed.

So from Ihearthomes you started Katie Colella Social and became a Virtual Assistant? Yes, I felt my time spent working with aspects of social media for my own business had by far given me more skills, to be able to offer out to other business owners, entrepreneurs & busy people and I am now working with people globally. The help, support and advice I was giving to others naturally led me into Business Mentoring. Which is when you decided to write a book? Well although writing a book has always been a dream of mine, I was actually writing about myself for my blog when I saw an opportunity on Facebook. A page I follow was asking for Mumpreneur’s to send in their stories to be included in an upcoming book. I applied thinking I had nothing to lose but not seriously believing I’d get chosen as so many others applied and the rest is history!

So within a matter of couple of weeks, you wrote your story, submitted it, became a co-author and now the book you have co-written is on Amazon? Yes, it’s overwhelming and we have already topped the best selling list on Amazon and are now doing a book tour! Amazing Katie, so what does 2018 hold for you and Katie Colella Social? I’ve had a great start to 2018 already. Our official book launch is this month and I have started a 12-month group mentoring program for women starting out in business, who are looking for help & support. I’ve had some amazing women sign up so far. I’m also working 1:1 with some real action taking female entrepreneurs who want to grow their businesses. 2018 is going to bring huge growth! Jamie, the Branch Manager told Newport Vision, “We are so proud to hold such an extensive choice of quality tiles at Laporsa and the old saying ‘Beauty doesn’t come cheap’ just simply isn’t true for us. We have such a history in distribution throughout the whole of the UK and have built such long-standing relationships with overseas manufacturers, we negotiate the lowest possible rates and pass the saving on to our customers. Instead of bleached woods and pale colours that have been a massive trend over the last couple of years we welcome a new take on luxurious modern design and get ready to introduce darker wood tones and more solid colours bringing back retro glamour. If the urge to get away from the greys, creams and pastels has been niggling away at you for some time, now is the time to hop skip and jump into a new trend.

Newport’s Queen of the Ice Mica joined GB Bobsleigh in the summer of 2016 and made her competitive debut on the North American Cup circuit that November. Mica has been a track and field athlete since she was 14. She specialised in 100m and is the current 100m Welsh Champion. She was the finalist in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games of 2014 as part of the 4x100m relay team. Two Years ago Mica decided to combine track and field with Bobsleigh in 2016, making her a dual athlete in both summer and winter sports and establishing herself as the leading brakewoman in the GB Bobsleigh Team with her pilot Mica McNeil. Mica joined GB Bobsleigh in the summer of 2016 and made her 24 newport vision March 2018

competitive debut on the North American Cup circuit that November. Mica enjoyed a superb start to her bobsleigh career, picking up a brace of silver medals and a bronze on the NAC circuit. She was second with Mica McNeill in

her first two races in Calgary and third in Whistler as she claimed a hat-trick of medals in her first three competitions for GB. Her World Cup debut saw her finish eighth in Whistler in December 2016 and she was seventh in the European Championships in Winterberg in January 2017. World Junior Championship Gold followed later that month as she and McNeill became the country’s first female World Junior Champions since Paula Walker and Rebeka Wilson triumphed in Park City in 2011.

February 2017 when she placed 16th with McNeill in Konigssee. However their funding was withdrawn in September last year and led them to create a crowdfundraising appeal which incredibly reached their target of ÂŁ30,000 within a week. Known now as the team powered by the people and this culminated in the best ever finish of 8th in the Olympics by a female bobsleigh team.

Bistrot Pierre

Fancy some food French style? Get along to the popular Bistrot Pierre at Friar’s Walk. Newport Vision visited the Bistro on a wet and windy evening. The low orange lighting, warm and welcoming restaurant all added to the ambience and what better way to warm warm us through but to start by ordering some wine. House Rose – light, crisp and a hint of sweetness. To start Champignon farci £6.50 Grilled Portobello mushroom and goats’ cheese wrapped in Bayonne ham, served with green herb and caper dressing and crouton. Rich flavour with a variety of textures. Soft mushroom and cheese with crisp salty ham and crunch of the crouton. The capers are quite potent. An interesting combination of flavour that work well together if you like rich full flavoured food.

Ravioli aux truffes 5.95 Ricotta and truffle ravioli in a light cream sauce with garlic and truffle oil, not only did it look delectable but had a delicious creamy texture with a delicate moreish flavour great for a main. £11.50

g Fren Cuisi ch ne

Navarin d’agneau £15.95 Navarin of lamb with leeks, roasted root vegetables, onions and rosemary in a red wine jus. The lamb is always a favourite and it was amazing, full of flavour and fell apart in the mouth and the vegetables accompanied perfectly with jus that glistened on top and left me wanting more. Haddock au beurre blanc a la moutarde £14.50 Smoked haddock, pomme puree, soft poached egg and grain mustard beurre blanc. I was tempted by the haddock when smelt it being delivered to another customer on a nearby table. For those who are not fish lovers the aroma is quite strong and the flavour similar but beautifully complimented by the creamy potatoe puree and delicious mustard sauce. I’m not keen on mustard but the flavour was not detectable in fact was a really nice addition to the dish. A very well put together and balanced dish. Light yet filling.

Tarte au citron £5.95 Caramelised lemon tart with raspberry sorbet Delicious palet cleanser and sizeable slice of tart however surprisingly the sorbet stole the limelight and was truly woke up the taste buds. I’m not wild about pudding but this comes highly recommended. Café gourmand £6.95 Berry macaroon, chocolate brownie, caramel profiterole and vanilla ice cream on an almond crumble with espresso coffee, at this point we were struggling to take another bite but these delights are not to be missed, perfectly formed and the perfect ending for an enjoyable evening. MEET THE month newport vision meet TEAM This with the team at Trecco Bay, Park Dean Resorts.

Q&A Name: Andy MacArthur Age: 53 Originally from: Greenoch, Scotland (where the temperature is much colder). Service at Trecco Bay: 8 years Why Trecco Bay: I’m a Scotsman and actually came here from Scotland for a weekend away and fell in love with the place – when I heard them was an opportunity going here I jumped at it as I was looking for a new challenge. 30 newport vision March 2018

Before Trecco: I previously worked in sales and retail. Family: 2 Children and 2 Grandsons. Loves: I love Vespa Scooters, I have an 1959 model and I attend Rally’s in Italy. Cliché, but I also love my job, the buzz of the caravan park is second to none, seeing families enjoying time together and the lifestyle more than anything, I genuinely enjoy coming to work. Hates: Sales people! Favourite thing about Trecco: Not long after I first started I met a family who came to Trecco for a weekend who fell in love with the place but thought they could never afford to buy, when they found out how affordable it was they were amazed, they bought here and we see them every weekend, they are now good friends of mine.

Name: Jack Johnson Age: 24 Originally from: Up North, Blackpool. Service at Trecco Bay: 10 months so far Why Trecco Bay: I had visited the park with family and they told me about the opportunity, I jumped at it as the people here are lovely and where else in the UK could I find a place to work with two parallel beaches and an amusement park? I love the fact that we have a Blue Flag beach and I can literally walk along the coast from here to Ogmore.

Before Trecco: Carphone Warehouse Family: I’m single – you can hit me up online. Loves: Footy, I’m a Blackpool supporter, I also love Reading, my fave book is The Chimp Paradox. Most of all I love Skiing, I can find an adventure anywhere, I am always out and about looking at the beautiful scenery, on the beach, Coney Island and I even found a local Wimpey, I had to have a double take, it’s definitely one of the hidden gems in this area – I love the nostalgia of this place. Hates: I’m a dog lover so hate the thought of cruelty to dogs. Favourite thing about Trecco: It’s unpredictability – every day is a new memory with different people.

Name: Matt Perry Age: 27 Originally from: Manchester Service at Trecco Bay: 2 years Why Trecco Bay: My partner is Welsh, I met her whilst working in Zante and followed her back here. I saw this job advertised online and the rest is history. Before Trecco: I used to work in the motor trade selling cars. Family: I have a two year old and my girlfriend is due in July with our 2nd baby. We aren’t married yet but plan to in the future. Loves: I really enjoy pond fishing and going to the gym.

Family time is also important to me now, I love taking my little one to the farm but he enjoys coming here to Trecco Bay, he loves the swimming pool and Siz and Lizzies soft play but his favourite without a doubt is dancing at the show dome. Favourite thing about Trecco: I’m lucky that my family from Manchester have also fallen in love with Trecco Bay so they often holiday here so I get to see them and spend time with them.

FAMILIES MAKING LASTING MEMORIES

Art Students Get Inspired by Newport Museum Newport Museum and Art Gallery has teamed up with Coleg Gwent to host an exhibition of work by art students from the City of Newport Campus. The exhibition is entitled Inspired By…and was launched at Newport Museum and Art Gallery on Friday 26th January. The students were asked to produce a piece of art in response to items or artwork currently on display at the museum. The artwork includes paintings, graphite pencil drawings, etchings, 3D pieces, painting on glass, and abstract relief work. For this project, the students were given a live brief and deadline, and asked to produce work that was of a high enough quality to go on display to the public. The collaboration between the museum and Coleg Gwent aims to encourage students to use local resources and venues, such as Newport Museum and Art Gallery, and to use the local area and local artists as a source of inspiration.

20 shortlisted entries will be displayed in the free exhibition, which runs from 27th January until 21st April. The other artwork will be displayed on rotation on a screen in the gallery. The exhibition offers the students the chance to develop links with arts centres, and to gain a better understanding of what it is like to work in a creative artistic role. By engaging with their local community, they are also able to contribute something positive to the area. Over 60 people attended the launch, including art students, family and friends, staff from the Art department, as well as Angela Lloyd, Chair of Governors at Coleg Gwent, and Gary Handley, Director of the City of Newport Campus. Charmaine Turner, Lecturer at School of Creative Industries at City of Newport Campus said: “We are thrilled to collaborate with the museum and for our students to be given this fantastic opportunity. This project aims to encourage them to use the resources and venues in and around Newport, and to start

to think about the commercial aspects of a career in the creative industries. Oliver Blackmore, Collections and Engagement Officer at Newport’s Museum and Art Gallery said: “The students submitted an incredible variety of artwork across many different mediums, and it was very difficult to shortlist the final 20. We are very pleased to be working with Coleg Gwent on this project, and it is clear that the students took this very seriously, and have put a lot of thought, time and effort into their work.” Nichola Watkins, Head of School of Creative Industries at City of Newport Campus said: “This exhibition demonstrates the exceptional skills and talent that is being developed and nurtured by the art department at Coleg Gwent. We are very proud of the pieces that our students have produced, and the incredibly high standards they have achieved.” Find out more Inspired By… exhibition, please visit: http://www.newport.gov. uk/heritage/index.cfm/ eventDetails/227971/ Creative and art courses offered by Coleg Gwent, please visit: http://www.coleggwent. ac.uk/

watercress sauce followed by a chocolate fondant tart. He will be mentored by an industry professional over the next few weeks before going forward to compete in the Wales Final in February. Mr Fairlie said: “This is was the first time the students had worked in a professional kitchen and they did a fantastic job. They all worked incredibly hard and produced very high quality food. The competition was extremely tight and they should all be very proud of what they achieved.”

Students cook up a storm at Coleg Gwent Coleg Gwent recently hosted the local heat of the Springboard FutureChef competition for the third consecutive year at Crosskeys Campus. Springboard’s FutureChef competition helps young people aged 12-16 to learn to cook by inspiring them to explore food and cooking as a life skill. It helps develop culinary talent and offers information about entry routes into the hospitality industry. The competitors included two students from Rhymney Comprehensive and two from Bishop of Llandaff School. They were given 90 minutes to prepare, cook and serve a hot main course and a hot or cold dessert for two people, with a budget of £7. The competition was held at the Crosskeys Campus in the

40-seater Morels restaurant, which was recently awarded a Trip Advisor ‘Certificate of Excellence’. Morels offers Coleg Gwent Catering and Hospitality students the opportunity to develop their skills in a commercial environment. This year the food was judged by Kevin Fairlie, Chef and Coleg Gwent Lecturer and Linda Warwick, Senior Technician. They were supported by Morel’s staff and trainee restaurant manager Ffion Thorne who is studying Catering and Hospitality at Crosskeys Campus, and will be representing the college in Pembroke at the UK Skills heats. The winner, Ewan Chadwell aged 13 from Bishop of Llandaff School cooked seared salmon with beetroot puree on creamed potatoes and kale with a

Paul Warren from Springboard said: “We would like to thank Coleg Gwent for hosting this fantastic competition. We are looking forward to working with Ewan and his mentor in the next stage of the competition.” Head of School Helen Lawless said: “I am delighted that Coleg Gwent was once again chosen as the venue for the local FutureChef competition. Morels offers Catering and Hospitality students the chance to develop their skills and gain experience in a working restaurant and kitchen. They are able to get an understanding of what it is like to produce high quality food, under pressure, and to a budget.” Coleg Gwent offers a variety of Catering and Hospitality courses, including a City and Guilds Diploma Professional Cookery Level 1 and 2, and Entry Level Hospitality and Catering Studies. Morels restaurant is open to the public for lunch, Tuesday to Friday between 12.15pm – 2pm. It is also available for private functions on a Wednesday evenings between 6.30 – 8.30pm.

With 2018 well underway it’s not too late to plan! A Year Of Change? people mean it and others cross everything including their toes in the hope that their declaration alone will make their statement a possibility!

And so here we are in 2018! How did that happen, seriously it was 2010 just the other day, did I fall asleep for eight years? You may well be asking the same question! We are at the beginning of yet another year and as usual our gage of optimism for the oncoming year will be mainly measured by what we experienced in 2017. For the planners amongst us we have already written down a million things we want to achieve by the end of the year (which for those of us, who don’t plan, gives us an acute form of mental indigestion!). Many of us declare if it’s been a bad year that we are never going to go through anything like that again. Some

36 newport vision March 2018

There are three camps of people when it comes to embarking on a new year.

1. The first camp are the

planners/visionaries; all their goals have been written down (in a brand new journal specifically for the New Year), what they would like to see, do and achieve for the year. If the previous year has been a bad one, they will make plans to avoid a repeat of it, doing everything in their power to avoid making the same mistakes again.

There are three camps of people when it comes to embarking on a new year.

2. The second camp, are the

non-planners! They are the total opposite of the first camp; they don’t plan anything, they will drift into the New Year with little expectancy of it being anything worse or greater than the year before. They may have a little hope that it will be a better year, but that will rest solely in the hands of fate rather than having anything to do with them!

3. Now the third camp of

people is where most of us sit. We are a mixture of the first two camps we are the well-meaning intentional planners! We have every intention of writing down our goals (and sticking to them), if we’ve had a tough year, we will declare that we are never going to go through another year like that again…ever…! We make firm and assertive decisions that we are going to change things this year! We become determined and start to see the New Year panning out to be new and exciting. Unfortunately however, our ‘intention’ is our biggest problem – why? Because that’s all it is, an intention – most of us whilst thinking about our goals

will never actually get around to writing them down. We never get beyond ‘thinking’ about our hopes and dreams and whilst it will have an effect when we are thinking positive, without action to our thoughts and legs to our dreams we end up the following December practically in the same position as the previous year.

Small changes are often better than sudden knee jerk reactions. If this sounds familiar to you, don’t panic, there is help at hand! Let me encourage you and make some suggestions which may help change this New Year we are all about to embark on for the better. Small changes are often better than sudden knee jerk reactions. We are far more comfortable with subtle changes in our lives than massive re-directions that are impossible to maintain. For example, if your New Year’s resolution is to lose weight but you decide to go on a quick fix low carb 500 calorie per day diet, how many of you know that you are going to crash and burn by the end of the first week (for some of us it would be the first day!!!). Making a huge change to your body without giving it prior notice will cause your body to freak out and rebel!! The old saying of the longer it takes the more likely it

will stay off is fact! Subtle change always outweighs drastic change. It’s the same with every other thing in life and why it is so important at the beginning of each year to set short term targets and realistic goals. How much easier would it be to say ‘I am setting a goal of losing 4lbs by the end of January’ as opposed to saying ‘I want to lose three stone by the summer! It’s a fact that vague goals produce vague results – you have to be specific about what you want to achieve.

g

This way your mind, body and emotions can work with you – it’s not a sudden or dramatic change but a gentle and firm move in a new direction.Yes it’s a much slower plan, but slow and steady is achievable! So what is it that you would like to see happen or change in your life this year? The first thing you need to do is get a note pad and pen – take it from a thought and an intention to a possible reality. Write it down, sit back and ponder, then ask yourself the question; ‘in reality, how long will this take me to do?’ Then write that down and move on to the next thing you would like to be

write it down

different this year. Continue to do that as many times as you have things you want to see changed. Once you have done this, congratulate yourself that you have taken it from a thought swirling about in your head to actually putting it on paper. Now obviously just writing things down won’t get them done, BUT it’s the first step! Remember, slow and steady will win the day, small adjustments, specific goals and short term targets – you got this, you can do it! The hardest thing is to take that first step but 2018 regardless of the challenges it may bring can be a year of significant change for you and the first steps to a lifetime of change that YOU are in control of. Happy goal setting! x Donna Howells Senior Pastor, Newport City Church
