the
vision Our scariest issue so far is here! A BIG welcome to our 5th issue of Newport Vision, 5 months in and going strong. This month we are jam packed with interview’s, fab idea’s on where to go for Halloween, Bonfire Night and for Christmas, as well as our regular pieces.
Once again we are absolutely delighted with the support and encouragement we have received from our readers.
For October we are supporting 2 charities, the first is Olivers Journey. Oliver’s family are fundraising to raise £60,000 for the two year old to have life changing Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery. They are hosting a fundraising dinner at The Celtic Manor resort on Saturday 14th October. For more information you can call Jane on 07876727970. The second charity is CLIC Sargent, the largest provider of specialist children and young people’s cancer support outside of the NHS in the UK. This month they have kindly added a haunted Halloween quiz that you can play and then donate. If you want to join the fight and help #YOUNGLIVESVSCANCER please contact your local Fundraising Engagement Manager Cerys Sadler based here in Newport on cerys.sadler@clicsargent.org.uk or call 07944 696849. We have had a lovely autumn poem sent in by one of our readers. If you have a poem, short story, photograph, artwork or your child has a colouring or something else you are proud of and would like to share, you can do so at info@newportvision.co.uk. We hope you enjoy reading October’s Issue as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together for you!

SCORING A DELIBERATE OWN GOAL – TAX INVESTIGATIONS Going through an investigation by HMRC is right up there with divorce and bereavement for severe stress and financial loss, yet thousands of business owners put themselves right in the firing line, taking the most amazing risks with their financial security, health and even family. Low or non-existent drawings, tiny profits, gross profit margins way out of kilter with industry norms, paying cash to employees or sub-contractors, and excessive spending or acquiring assets with no apparent means of paying for them are all common and stand out like a sore thumb. Could you live and keep a family on less than £10,000 per year? Yet, that is what many are reporting on their tax returns. By the time HMRC have gone back 6 years and added penalties and interest to the tax and then added on tax credits, many end up owing HMRC tens of thousands. Don’t end up in the same boat. Talk to us without cost or obligation about how we can help you avoid being HMRC’s next victim!

Bridging the Severn...
Thinking of moving? Now is the time to sell! If you weren’t already aware, property is hot right now in Newport. The announcement to remove the Severn Bridge tolls has Bristol buyers looking further afield to Newport in search of more bang for their buck. To manage the demand and cater for the upsurge in prospective buyers coming to the area Newland Rennie estate agency has merged with David James & Partners in Bristol to add value to their customers. Newport Vision met with Gary Plumley of Newland Rennie to find out more. So Gary what can you tell us about the current property market? We are already finding that the majority of people who come through our doors, particularly at our Chepstow branch, are coming over from Bristol. People have been moving over here from the South West of England for years but we have seen a pretty steep increase recently and prices in Newport are rising quite significantly. Newland Rennie have recently merged with David James & Partners creating a group of nine offices on both sides of the 08 newport vision October 2017
Severn and now employ 70 staff. We felt it was a perfect solution to provide a better service for both our vendors and prospective buyers. So what is attracting potential buyers to Newport? Someone moving into the area from Bristol will find they can get a lot more for their money, and are still able to commute into the city for work either by road or train relatively easily and quickly. With Newport going under rigorous regeneration its becoming more attractive so people are getting ahead of the curve.
to sell your property
So how quickly is the market moving? Houses in Newport are selling quickly which is creating a shortage of properties. Not enough properties are coming on to the market to satisfy the demand. What other services do Newland Rennie offer? The merger means we can now offer a full ‘plot to key’ service, which is especially useful if you’re looking at rural property. You might buy a plot of land or barn to convert at auction and would have to look elsewhere for planning advice and an architect but now we offer all of this under one roof, valuations, building surveying, land compensation, expert witness and rural AMC finance.
Newland Rennie has been awarded exclusive membership of The Guild of Property Professionals for Newport, what does that mean? Guild membership is usually only granted to one agent in a given area and means we’ve met the industry criteria for professionalism and customer service. Being chosen to represent the guild in Newport is a great honour. It is a tribute to all the hard work invested in our reputation for exceptional service and underlines our position as a leading estate agent in the area. Estate agency is all about people which is why we remain committed to the principles of good old-fashioned, honest, personal service and this has always been our trademark.
If you’re thinking of selling your property you’re in safe hands with Newland Rennie. Contact them today for a valuation. You can call Gary and the Newland Rennie team on 01633 221441.

Interview
This month newport vision were lucky enough to get an appointment with the much sought after, Jenna Mcdonnell. Make up artist, hairdresser, Guinness World Record holder and now established business woman, we grabbed the opportunity to talk to the very jet lagged but still beaming Jenna to find out more about one of Newport’s most humble entrepreneurs. So Jenna, I’ve been lucky enough to have my hair done by you at my sister’s wedding but take us back to the beginning, did you always want to be a hairdresser? When even back in High School I was forever doing my friends and families hair. At 14 I was asked to do hair at a friend’s wedding and by 15 people were trusting me to cut hair. I remember having a list of appointments on the back of my bedroom door. This was back in the 90’s so I’d be doing plaits, cornrows and spikey hair-up do’s, a bit different to what I do now. Wow, so you had a creative flair quite early on? I started drawing before hair, that was my first love. I was always doodling and sketching and my friends in infant school would ask me to draw little cartoon characters for them. I remember 12 newport vision October 2017
having a list of drawings I’d have to get through each day, anything from Mickey to the Tazmanian Devil. My passion for drawing led me to do an Art Foundation course in the old Allt-yr-yn uni. So how did you get in to hair as a profession? I went on to do a fashion degree at Caerleon uni, I chose that specifically because I knew I could incorporate wigs into my designs. I made loads of wigs whilst I was doing my degree. Then I worked as a leisure receptionist at the Celtic Manor and then Friends Hair in Maindee.
just wanted to focus on weddings. People would always complement me on how I did my own makeup and customers started asking me to help with theirs. That’s when I realised I could specialise for Weddings. Until then I wouldn’t even charge for the make-up as I wasn’t qualified and that’s what led me to go to Coleg Gwent in Crosskeys where I did Theatrical and Media Make-up. Is that where you began doing Halloween make-up?
When did you decide to specialise in weddings?
Well it definitely helped. I love Halloween and used to love dressing up and going out to town with friends. We would try and come up with bigger and better ideas every year.
I just loved doing weddings, at one point they were all I wanted to do. I wasn’t passionate about cutting or colouring hair, I knew I
We think your Halloween makeup is outstanding. Do you just create whatever comes in to your mind at the time?
Jenna Mcdonnell
No, it's only one day of the year, so there are no second chances. I'm usually fully booked months in advance with back to back appointments so I don't have much time to experiment. I have a fantastic team that help me come up with an idea or theme and then I plan what I am going to do and the equipment and products that I’ll use. I like everything to be perfect so a lot of planning goes into each person's make-up. On the day it is like a military operation. So did you open up your shop after leaving college? God no, loads went on in between, I still worked at Friends and then I moved to Australia. Australia?! Tell us more... I was looking for a new challenge so I got enough money together and flew to Australia looking for work. I had no job lined up but managed to find a job just before I ran out of money at The Shangri La Hotel in Sydney. After just
one month they promoted me to Salon Trainer. I was shocked when they offered me the job let alone a promotion - 'Me? Jenna? Salon Trainer?' I was over the moon. It gave me a new found confidence that I didn’t have before. And then you returned to the UK? Newport is home isn’t it. There is something about Newport, about the City, the familiarity, my friends and family. So when you returned, what did you do next? I rented my shop, although it was never meant to be an actual shop. Initially it was meant as a work space as I was making personalised bags at the time. I needed a space for my stock and set up my sewing machine but I quite quickly realised I could do hair, make-up and bags all under one roof. So just 3 months later, September 14th, I officially

heard your having a hard time, so I thought I’d help, this is for you.”
Talking of a huge amount of work, tell us about your Guinness World Record?
Let’s do a quick fire round... When you're not fundraising, breaking records or making people look amazing what do you do with your spare time?
Fave Bronzer?
I often go out, either to Caerleon or to The Lamb in Newport for cocktails, it’s one of my favourites.
Osis+ Session
Well I am a massive fan of Mark Everson a pencil artist from Cwmbran and one day I was discussing a drawing he had done of Luca, our own local superhero who was struck down by meningitis at the age of 3, and a 24hr sketchathon he had done. I was so inspired by what Mark had done I wanted to do something for charity. I wasn’t sure if people would turn up in the middle of the night to get their hair done so I challenged myself to 100 hair up’s in a day. My receptionist contacted The Guinness World Records and because nothing like it had been done before they said they would have to challenge me to do 300 hair-up’s in 8 hours!
Tarte concealers That’s such a lovely idea Jenna, maybe one of our readers know of a deserving family or cause? We’ll definitely watch this space.
Where do you like to go for a meal? Hmm, either The Man of Gwent or The Hanbury. Which local person inspires you? Helen Thomas-Powell , of Do You Believe. Who is your fave celeb Make-up Artist? Mimi Choi from Canada
So another military operation and 300 updos?! I officially did 304 in 7 and a half hours and the money I raised all went to local charities. It’s something that I want to do every year now, a charity event for a local cause, and not just the one’s that everyone is aware of and supports. I’d love to just turn up on someone’s door and say, “I’ve 14 newport vision October 2017

Ok, now product round, your fave Lipstick? Kylie Jenner Lip Kit in either Candy K or Koko K Fave Foundation? Kat Von D, Tattoo Cover Foundation
Fave Illuminator? Boots SEVENTEEN, 3-way glow
Estee Lauder, Bronze Goddess Best Hairspray?
Any other product you can’t live without? Revitalash, It really works, I have recommended it to so many people I now even stock it in the shop. Amazing, I now have a list of products I want in my stocking from Santa! So what does the future hold for you? Hopefully, I’ll expand and my team and shop will get bigger, but 10 years from now, I’d love to open a training school and teach.

I think a smokey eye is one of my most requested looks. So here’s a few easy steps to help you achieve your smokey eye at home.
Step 1
Prime your lid ladies!! There’s nothing worse than a smokey eye that ends up looking like you’ve been crying for an hour. Priming the lid keeps eyeshadow from budging.
Step 2
Kohl liner (black, brown or slate) Apply to upper and lower lash line and smudge with a pencil brush or even a Q-tip then set with a matte eyeshadow of your choice.
Step 3
Using a medium colour matte eyeshadow (again black, brown, grey or for a pop of colour- navy, plum or forest green) and a fluffy blending eyeshadow brush blend the shadow from your lash line to the crease of your eye. TIP- keep your eye open when applying to the crease, this guides you whether or not if your applying too far up the brow bone).
Step 4
Using a larger fluffy blending eyeshadow brush and a skin tone or warmer colour matte eyeshadow, blend over the crease to soften.
Step 5
Good brush recommendation set: Spectrum 10-piece Mean Girls Set £49.99
Apply kohl liner to the waterline
Step 6
Curl lashes and add mascara TIP- Using dark shadows can cause fall down/mess onto cheekbones, under eyes etc, clean up with damp cotton ball and apply concealer.

Restaurant Review
Eat at Meat! This month Newport Vision made a pit stop at one of Newport’s favourite, independent burger joints, Meat. It opened it’s doors back in May 2015 and are doing just swell. They’re only open 4 days a week – Wednesday – Saturday so you’ll be best advised to book in advance as they are busy. Their small yet perfectly formed premises on Clytha Park Road at the top of town has an inviting aura about it. Its rustic and informal layout makes it feel like a great place to gather with friends and family and grab a decent bite to eat. Being quite small it has a really cosy feel about it, particularly in the evenings, with 28 newport vision October 2017
the lighting adding a nice bit of ambience and warmth, just what you want as the cooler nights start to draw in. They’ve found a rather interesting use for some old upcycled doors by using them as a feature on the ceiling which I thought was quite cool and unusual teamed with some rather nice bold wall art featuring their signature Meat Bull amongst quirky quotes and pictures of some of its previous diners including Billy Connolly. The menu too is small but perfectly formed offering a handful of gluten free beef burgers from The Classic to One Hot Muther and The FB – I’ll let you work out what that stands for
but I’ll give you a clue, it has 3 3.5oz patties with the trimmings to match. There’s also chicken burgers, a foot long hot dog and veggie options, my personal favourite – When Halloumi Met a Bun, which I assume to be a play on the name of the film When Harry Met Sally. This veggie burger sounded really appealing but I couldn’t resist the beef. I’m a sucker for a Nacho, always a winner in my eyes, so Nachos to share and I couldn’t resist trying the Beer Battered Halloumi Fingers. A decent sized portion with a selection of different sauces to suit all tastes; mild salsa, a tomato based sauce, BBQ to hot chilli. Great to get you going
Meat before the main event! A little naughty I know but if you’re a cheese lover the Halloumi fingers won’t disappoint. The beer batter was delicious, light and crispy to taste. A perfect contradiction with the yummy hot salty molten cheese.
For some people the burger is the classic go to choice wherever you’re eating out but whether you’re a burger fan or not Meat is definitely worth a shout. A great little place for a decent hearty bite to eat in cool and unfussy surroundings.
It goes without saying that the burger is the main attraction at Meat, stacked high with 2 x 3.5oz patties in every bun, all priced at £7.95. I went with The Classic, served with the crispiest bacon rashers, gherkins and their Meat secret sauce. A truly scrummy and mouth watering burger, well seasoned with a symphony of flavours that work so famously together. Sticking with the Mexican influence my partner in crime ordered The Gringo – chilli infused beef, lettuce, salsa, guacamole and sour cream with a side of Dirty Fries – cheese, bacon bits and jalapenos. Can you see a pattern forming here guys? If this isn’t getting your taste buds going the real thing definitely will.
Simply put, good quality burgers done well. Meat, we salute you!
Sides are separate so I opted for the standard fries alongside my classic burger. I must compliment Meat on a well seasoned, hot and crisp fry, not too thick not too thin and no need to add salt – just perfecto. The chunky coleslaw is also a nice addition, a little pricey at £3.50 but if you like a fresh crunchy slaw it’s definitely worth a bash although as you can imagine we were pretty full by this point thinking our eyes were definitely bigger than our bellies! Dessert is also available.

Bedroom Trends for 2017/18
A timeless trend that is still a favourite as we go into 2018 is sticking to one colour but with different tones and textures. Mixing Matte and shiny metallic with a splash of glitter tells about the bedroom owners fine taste. Grey and White shades are especially popular for this look. 32 newport vision October 2017

Recipes
Nutty Toffee Apples
Studded with crunchy nuts, these grown-up toffee apples work well for a Halloween or Bonfire Night party recipe. METHOD 1. Push the wooden sticks halfway into the apples at the stalk end. 2. Dissolve the sugar and water in a thick-bottomed pan over a gentle heat. 3. Add the butter and syrup to the mixture and bring to the boil. Continue to boil, without stirring, until the toffee reaches 140C/275F (use a sugar thermometer to measure this). 4. Remove the pan from the heat and gently stir in the nuts. 5. Carefully dip each apple into the toffee, making sure each apple is well coated, and set aside to harden on a baking try lined with non-stick parchment. RECIPE TIPS You can also cover your toffee apples with dessicated coconut or chocolate sprinkles.

Autumn Coming By Paul Blanc-Patrouilleau I love Autumn when it’s come carves placidly into Summer’s sun curved passively yielding to a blend crouched lower round earth’s bend Soon Summer’s done land’s lost its fire there’s the ire at the chill spear Lightening fear sudden squall purple clouds appal flaked shadows spun sporadic tear -ful gutter or leaf whether relief outburst run breeze calm collected cool air tepid dank low-lit by puddle and pool I love it then when Summer’s undone can love it more when all Autumn’s come
