Welcome This month sees a couple of new events (hopefully weather permitting). The postponed Auction of Promises is on Well what an end to March! Don’t think April 5th and the PTFA Spring Dance many of us foresaw that. With snow still a Ceilidh in the Village Hall on the 20th, lying everywhere it looks like a white which should be fun! Easter for everyone, in lieu of a white Christmas! Happy Easter! The weather has brought out the community spirit well and truly in the Best wishes villages, as you’ll probably know Paul & Siobhan already, as a local wedding has already Contact: featured in national news, amongst Paul & Siobhan Gothorp other fantastic efforts. 2 Cae Gwyn Thank you to everyone who has sent in pictures of the snow, please do keep them coming - those we haven’t got room for inside are on the website. And a huge thank you to everyone who’s responded to the various requests for snow clearing and car moving to help their neighbours in need!

Thank you! A Big Thank to local farmer Andy Murray plus the others( who I am sorry I can not remember they names). They came to our rescue when we got stuck in the snow just outside Mold. We had thought we would manage to get home from the concert we had been to in Manchester, but we were wrong. Though we did have to walk some of the way back, we were able to leave the car in a much better place, as it had been in the middle of the road coming out of Mold not a good place . Thank You Gents Jane Clarke and Ann Jahn

Llanferres Playing Field & Recreation Association would like to thank Gordon Jones for his generous donation from his 60th Birthday Party

Thank you! Can we thank all the residents of Cae Derwen who cleared the snow, not once but twice, (on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd March). Without your tremendous effort the old couple who live at the top of the close would not have been able to get out and buy food. Very many thanks for a great community effort. John and Joan Almond.

Gardening Club news Llanferres Parish Gardening Club Our guest speaker at the meeting on Monday 11th March was David Shiel, AONB Senior Warden. Although originally booked to talk about the 'Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB', David changed his talk to the 'Jubilee Tower on Moel Famau'. A brief introduction about Moel Famau itself, which attracts over 200,000 visitors a year, was followed by the history of the Tower from the foundation stone being laid in 1810, to celebrate the Jubilee of George ììì that year, the building in 1813 - 1817 and the momentous collapse in 1862. One corner of the tower is now being excavated and replaced as original to show visitors the original style. Leaflets were distributed giving a potted history of the tower. Once again, a talk by a dedicated worker who gave a well illustrated history of the area. Seeds were given out for the 'Members Only' class at our Annual Show which will be on Saturday, September 7th. Our next meeting will be on Monday April 8th when Nicolette Evans of Northop College will give her talk 'Herbaceous Plants into Autumn'. As always, visitors and new members will be most welcome. Easter Vestry - Tuesday 9th April at 7.30 pm in the Church Please do come along and support your Parochial Church Council at the AGM of your local church. New officers will be voted for and any concerns you may have may be voiced at this meeting.

Before endeavours fade 2014 marks a significant anniversary in the history of the United Kingdom with the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War in August 1914. A war which stemmed from the old days of Empire and secret treaties and alliances, the “war to end all wars” and a “war for civilisation” which shaped the 20th century, and yet, was a precipitant in an even greater conflagration in 1939. A conflict where the old mentality of dashing cavalry charges met the new mechanised warfare of machine guns, huge artillery bombardments, poison gas and the fighting tank. The war left over a million Commonwealth dead and touched all communities in Britain including our own five parishes, and many phrases such as “going Chef Armstrong demonstrates skillsin into No Man’s Land” or “keeping my head below the parapet” arehisstill common usage without our realising their origin. Whilst each death was a great family tragedy and a sad memory for many following generations, the 31 recorded deaths across our parishes are hugely dwarfed by casualties from the townships, and indeed Ruthin where 70 deaths are recorded, almost half of those from the single battle of Mametz Wood on the Somme in July 1916, as part of the “Big Push” In my own village of Llanferres, our 8 losses (although 2 are also recorded elsewhere) fought in numerous of the theatres of war including Gallipoli, Northern France & Belgium and the often forgotten Middle Eastern conflict

Church News and I am hoping, where research permits, to tell some of their stories in future issues. Research is difficult (and in some case expensive), not least because what records exist are now over a century old and almost 60% were destroyed, somewhat ironically, in a German bombing raid in September 1940 on the War Office in London - although thanks to Heritage Lottery Funding some of the burnt and water damaged remains are being painstakingly photographed and reassembled by the National Archives Office in Kew, starting at both ends of the alphabet and working slowly inwards. Documents for the Royal Welch Fusiliers, for whom many of our men fought, are currently en route to the Wrexham Heritage Museum (from Caernarfon) which is ultimately good news, but currently stuck in limbo. If time, records and energy permit, I would like to broaden my research to all our communities, so would be most grateful for any records, pictures or reminiscences anyone might have; which can be e-mailed, posted or I am happy to travel to view. Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE We have just finished our 2012/13 cookery workshop programme with our Sous Chef Cathy leading an amazing session on ‘Adventurous Puddings’. This chocolate fondant was one of our favourites from this workshop. It’s really not too difficult and is a big WOW!!

Chocolate fondants 50g melted butter , for brushing cocoa powder , for dusting 200g good-quality dark chocolate , chopped into small pieces 200g butter , in small pieces 200g golden caster sugar 4 eggs and 4 yolks 200g plain flour Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Brush the melted butter all over the inside of the pudding mould. Place the mould in the fridge or freezer. Brush more melted butter over the chilled butter and add a good spoonful of cocoa powder into the mould. Tip the mould so the powder completely coats the butter. Shake out any excess cocoa Place a bowl over a pan of barely simmering water, then slowly melt the chocolate and butter together. Remove bowl from the heat and stir until smooth. Leave to cool for about 10 mins. In a separate bowl whisk the eggs and yolks together with the sugar until thick and pale and the whisk leaves a trail. Sift the flour into the eggs and beat together. Pour the melted chocolate into the egg mixture in thirds, beating well between each addition until all the chocolate is added. Tip the fondant batter into a jug, then evenly divide between the moulds. Place the fondants on a baking tray. Cook for 10-12 mins until the tops have formed a crust and they are starting to come away from the sides of the moulds. Remove from the oven and leave to sit for 1 min before turning out. Loosen the fondants by moving the tops very gently so they come away from the sides, easing them out of the moulds.

New Members Needed. The children's playing field has been available for the children of our community for well over ten years. This has only been made possible by the people who volunteer their time to help out, not only with the work parties and fund raising, but also by joining the committee. This may sound like a load of hassle, but there really is not that much to do, other than come to the meetings every few months and join in. The meetings are usually held in the Druid pub and last about an hour. Most of the current members have older children who no longer use the Park, or, in some cases none at all! If we do not get new people to come along and join in, the park and playing field will no longer have a committee and will close. We’re sure there are plenty of parents who use the facility and whose children would not like to see it closed, but we need you to volunteer. The AGM will be announced shortly, so please come along , or contact one of the above.

Many Thanks Dan Hurst 810461 on behalf of LPFRA.

Maeshafn Cricket Club news Cricket News April 2013 Well here we are again - cricket season is upon us, yet it has just been snowing for the past few days and we don't yet know our fixtures. The North Wales league have cocked up and booked us in for the same home fixtures as our host club at Tata Steel Sports Club. Not sure 44 blokes can manage to share 2 changing rooms and 1 wicket but I suppose it is possible if we take it in turns to bowl and bat.

A note from your County Councillor We are at last seeing the first signs of spring in our hedgerows with Snow Drops and Daffodils leading the way and the first green buds forming on the Hawthorn. Sadly, these days they are having to compete with the ever increasing amounts of litter which is also very obvious at this time of year. Everything from Mac Donald's takeaway cartons to plastic bottles, plastic bags to more worryingly, empty beer cans. Many of the hedges and fences are also draped with the green and black remains of plastic packaging. The cost of clearing this litter across the country is considerable and the impact on the environment and the beauty of the countryside itself is difficult to put a price on. We can all do our bit to help reduce this problem by taking our litter home and where possible by reporting those people who have no respect for our country side.

but it will also help me to produce a list of all those things that the ward needs completing during my term of office. With funds being tight, it is often a case of first come first served and if we are prepared with lists of roads that need resurfacing and projects that may need financing, it will give us a head start. If you have any thing that you would like to see included in the plan please let us know by contacting either myself or any of your Community Councillors.

Local news VILLAGE COMMUNITY SAVE THE WEDDING DAY ! It’s the day before the wedding, snow is falling, we start to clear the drive ready for Paul’s brother and family to arrive in their camper van from Switzerland. The beautifully restored M.G. roadster that Paul had been preparing for the big day for 5 months was put under wraps and the Land Rover discovery was dug out. Many hours later we realize it’s not stopping and all the ‘day before the wedding plans' are forgotten, Alison stays positive. In the evening after the Swiss family Jelley have settled in, they were rather shocked at finding that they had left less snow behind on their Swiss mountain! We went down to the Church to test the sound system for the music and to take some flowers Alison had arranged. On entering the Church gate we started to have major concerns on how people would get up to the Church the next day, then on entering the Church it was clear there was no electric, the whole of the village suffering a power cut! We groped about with mobile phone lights putting in the flowers and went home feeling very despondent to say the least. We asked our twins Chrissie and Mark to text friends and see if any could come and help clear a pathway through in the morning. Wendy Shillito rang to check the prayers she was reading and got our tale of despair. 6 a.m. Day of our daughter’s wedding, oh no, it is still snowing, Paul drops myself and the twins off at the Church, Yes!! the electric is on! but the drifts up the Church are waist deep.

We walk home at 7a.m, as Paul had to start collecting the hairdresser, make up lady, from their abandoned cars in Mold, he then collects Alison’s brother, Glyn and friend Tim from Mold , and Richard and Chris Smith, Mark’s friends to start digging, along with the Swiss family. This was the start of Paul’s never ending shuttle run of collecting and delivering, he covered over 125 miles that morning, not getting out of the car from 6a.m. until he went to pick up the bride and bridesmaids at 11 45 and quickly changed. We thought between these few, we might, if lucky, make a small pathway to get Alison and Mike to the Church. Paul went to collect the ushers Glyn and Mark from' the big dig' at 11a.m. along with the Swiss family and Tim, they all came in the house very emotional, with tears in their eyes describing the scenes at the Church, the army of volunteers and the fantastic atmosphere. Alison leaves the house wearing her beautiful dress, a fantastic smile, and wellies, along with the bridesmaids, they had no idea of the amazing achievement of the people involved. Alison was absolutely astounded by the scenes that greeted her when she arrived at the Church, a blue 'carpet' was placed beneath her feet. She was overwhelmed by the people’s kindness. Every person in the Church, both friends and family were overcome with the kindness of the village community spirit. We had family who had travelled from New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Switzerland and

We know there are many more adults and children who we have not mentioned by name, these kind individuals, we need to say a special thank you to, as we were unknown to them and they still came out in a blizzard to help Alison and Mike have such a perfect and special day As a token of our gratitude, as we cannot think of a better way to thank everybody involved, a sum of money has been placed behind the bar with Julie and Jim at the Druid Inn, from ourselves, Alison and Mike and Mike’s parents, for everybody to toast the happy couple, which you all made a wedding to remember. We are delighted that the kindness, hard work and community spirit of Llanferres has made National news for all the right reasons. FROM ALL THE JELLEY FAMILY AND ROBERTS FAMILY A BIG THANK YOU ! Nature Notes This has been the winter of the Siskin. Siskins regularly visit garden bird feeders, especially in winter but this year their numbers are way above normal. Thirty or so are not unusual and there was a flock estimated at about 150 seen locally, and it was pleasing to note a few Redpolls with them. Although we have a local breeding population of Siskins, many of the birds we see in winter are migrants from, probably, Scandinavia. These migrations are very spasmodic, in that some years only comparatively small numbers come over, whereas in other years they arrive in huge numbers and this year would seem to be one of the latter. The bird organisations express some uncertainty as to what causes these migration variations. The usual cause is lack of food but this is not always the case and it could just be down to an exceptionally good breeding season leading to overpopulation in some areas so that despite, what would seem to us as, plenty of available food it is not enough for the inflated population so they migrate to other places. In Britain they take full advantage of the generosity of garden owners who put out seed and nuts in the bird feeders. To migrate is not a decision that is taken lightly as there are many risks. Exhaustion can take a heavy toll, especially on birds that are not fully fit and predation is always a hazard. And then when they arrive, how can they be sure that the food supply will be better than where they have left. To minimise the risk of predation, many species migrate at night but

this is not the case with Siskins, as they fly during the day. Last month I mentioned that I had not seen any newts in my pond but I am pleased to say that they are now present but still arriving. I said I had not heard of any frog spawn but a few days later friends told me of some in their pond but the following day it was encased in ice after a very cold night. It is probable that the spawn will survive and hatch as it is very resilient. However, late spawning might have an effect on the resulting tadpoles in that, unless we have a warm spring and summer, they may not have time to develop into frogs before next winter, as their development is temperature dependent. If this happens they can remain in the juvenile state through the winter and metamorphose into adults the following spring. I note that Herons are feeding young in their nests and, given that their eggs take 3-4 weeks to hatch, the eggs must have been laid about the third week of February which, according to my records, was a week of continuous night frosts. But it shows that animals and plants are defying the wintery conditions as witness the number of wild plants that are flowering, such as Wood anemone, Primrose, Barren strawberry and wild Daffodil. Ants are emerging from hibernation so they must think warmer weather is coming. Let us hope they are right!

We enjoyed hearing all about the history of Spoons, and seeing all the different shapes and sizes from the very early days. They ranged from a very tiny one used for Snuff up to the present day large Ladles, all highly polished. At April's meeting we are going to hear about the Pleasures of "Scuba Diving" from Mrs Viv Craig which sounds exciting and interesting but, to me, very scaring as well.
