Welcome Welcome to the April edition of News & Views. We’re now into Spring and it doesn’t feel much different to Winter! Hopefully, things will pick up weather-wise soon. Well done to the Playing Field Committee on winning the big Tesco prize on offer. More details are on page 18. And well done to the committee too for an excellent Llanvega$ Casino Night at the end of March. Just a quick update on the Quiz Night - we raised an excellent total of £470.88 after costs, which meant after a donation of £50 to Marie Curie Cancer Care we added £420.88 to News & Views funds, which was a great boost. So thanks once again to all who attended and contributed in many ways to the successful event.

As mentioned previously, the next edition of News & Views will be the 200th, so if you have any photographs of events/incidents over the last 20 years we’d love to receive them! There’s also an idea to revive the Llanferres Carnival from days gone by for 2017 - more details are on page 22 of how to join in if you wish, or help organise the event. Our best wishes go to councillor Yvonne McCorry for a speedy recovery. Thanks to everyone for your continued support. Best wishes, Paul & Siobhan Tel: (01352) 810668 Email: news@llanferres.org www.llanferres.org

Glyn Edwards, Rhos Isa, and all the family would like to express their sincere thanks for all the kindness and sympathy extended to them following the sad loss of Gwen. She lived and worked in Llanferres for over sixty years. Born and bred in Pentrecelyn, Gwen moved to Fron Hen following her marriage to Glyn in 1955, and devoted her life to her family and the farm. She will be fondly remembered as Glyn's beloved wife; the very supportive mother and mother in law of Delyth and Rob, Huw and Gwyneth and Gwyn and Sarah; the loving nain of David, Kate, Alun, Sion and Vicky, Mari, Jonathan, Michael, and Ceri; and the proud great grandmother of Celyn. Her funeral was held at St. Berres church on 7th March following a private burial. Generous donations in her memory were gratefully received in aid of the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The gardening club held their meeting on 14th March, 2016. The guest speaker was Carol Madden and her topic was: " A seed for thought". Her aim was to encourage members to collect their own seeds, save and plant them to provide more rare and expensive plants in their gardens. This was a humorous and informative talk. The refreshments were provided by Mary Barton and the raffle prizes were won by Ivy Watts and Karen Langford. Our next Meeting is on Monday, 11th April, 2016, when the guest speaker is Ifor Jones. Mr. Jones recently returned from Papua, New Guinea after living and working there for nine years. Please come and join us. Christine Smith, Hon. Secretary.

Llanferres Playing Field & Recreation Association has bagged a share of a £11.5million carrier bag charge fund We are delighted to announce we have bagged £12,000 from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. The supermarket teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help initiative, which saw grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to environmental and greenspace projects. Eight million shoppers voted in stores up and down the country. And it can now be revealed LPFRA has been awarded £12,000. The results have been announced and we will now begin work on bringing our project to life. The charity Secretary, Gareth Jaggard, said “We will be replacing the zip wire which needs to be taken out of service due to its age and new assault course will provide children the opportunity to race each other. We will be installing some new items of play equipment that will be accessible to wheelchair users and also provides experiences to those with learning difficulties. This inclusive play equipment is an area that the charity hope to expand upon over the coming years. Being awarded the £12,000 has meant that we can create a hedgehog habitat and wild meadow area. We will provide homes for hedgehogs and maintain the environment to a sustainable level, the local school children are looking forward to studying the hedgehog numbers. Caroline Silke, Head of Community at Tesco, said “We have been overwhelmed by the response of our customers and the feedback has been brilliant. “We can’t wait to see the money being put to use bringing these projects to life. The LPFRA would like to thank everybody in the community who helped us by voting in store.”

Railways in Llanferres Railway mania swept the United Kingdom during the mid-nineteenth century. Many schemes were devised ranging from the severely functional to the highly speculative. Four schemes were proposed that would involve Llanferres parish. In 1845 it was suggested that a railway should run directly between Ruthin and Mold. The route would pass from Ruthin to Plas y nant. From here a tunnel would be driven under Moel Gyw to emerge at Cynant in Llanarmon. The final stage would be down the Alyn Valley to Llanferres, Loggerheads, Rhydymwyn and Mold. However, tunneling costs were high at that time so the proposal was not viable. The next proposal was for a railway spur to be run off the Mold to Denbigh railway at Rhydymwyn. It would pass along the banks of the River Alyn to terminate at Loggerheads on the green area in front of today's cafĂŠ. Construction would have involved diverting the course of the meandering river in places. Despite obtaining an Act in Parliament for permission to construct the railway the promotors had second thoughts and formally abandoned the plan in 1869. By 1869 it was possible to travel by rail between Ruthin and Mold via Denbigh. It became apparent that a more direct route would not only be quicker but would also be significantly cheaper for users. This led to the original 1845 proposal being resuscitated in 1888. This in turn led to much discussion and to two further proposals.

The first was for a cogwheel driven railway straight up the hill from Llanbedr over Bwlch pen barras. This would have been far too slow to be seriously considered and was swiftly dismissed. The second was for a tunnel to be driven under Moel Famau with an underground station constructed beneath the Jubilee Tower. A lift shaft would ferry tourists to the surface. This fanciful proposal would have been expensive to construct and would never have recouped the outlay necessary. By now tunneling costs had been reduced by 50% so that the original proposal was a practical possibility. Over the next nine years there was much discussion by Ruthin Town Council about this and other possible routes connecting Ruthin with other towns. The Light Railways Act of 1896 encouraged the building of railways in rural areas by reducing both the legal costs and the cost of construction by relaxing some of the regulations. However, eventually after much indecision the idea was dropped. The matter was raised again after World War I in 1919 and discussed at length by Ruthin Rural District Council. Finally it was decided that the most economic connection between the two towns was by road transport and no further consideration was given to the railway route. This was a relief to the landowners in Llanferres who had objected to the proposed route down the Alyn Valley.

Do you remember the Llanferres Carnival? Would you like to be part of a group to look at the possibilities of reviving the event? Sheila Hawkes has suggested that we could revive the Carnival in Llanferres, and wondered what interest there is in the community to do so. The thinking is that 2017 would be the first new one, and there would be a need for all local organisations to support and become in involved - either helping to organise the event, or by taking a stall, or staging some other activity within it, or however they wish. If you're interested in an initial discussion of the idea please contact News & Views in the first instance by email: news@llanferres, or drop a note into 2 Cae Gwyn.

A note from your County Councillor Spring is now fast approaching and after such a wet winter we are all looking forward to getting out into our gardens. After the latest accident on the A494 between the Llanarmon Yn Ial turning and the Clwyd Gate I have once again called for double white lines from the turning up to and past the Clwyd Gate. Sadly most of the accidents involve people overtaking as they approach the bends in the road before the Clwyd

Gate and as always speed is involved. Darren Miller our local AM has also asked the Welsh Minister to review this section of the A494 which is a Trunk Road and therefore comes under the Welsh Government. I am grateful for his support. There have been some minor amendments to our local bus services and new bus timetables are available from County Hall and the bus companies. Once again we have been fortunate not to lose any major services. This is in part down to the fact that the residents of our ward always take part in the

Baby and Toddler Group 9.15 to 11.15am every Tuesday during term time. ÂŁ1 including a drink and biscuits. We encourage parents and grandparents of babies and toddlers to come along. It is a good way for the children to have a play while getting to know those they may start school with and also to meet other local parents.

A note from your County Councillor annual bus service consultations and in doing so prove there is a need for our local services. It is important to note that the 9.00 am Ruthin to Mold service no longer goes through Llanferres but now goes via Llanarmon Yn Ial, Graianrhyd, Eryrys and Maeshafn. The original service was not well used and the consultation showed that there was a demand for the revised route. Did you know that the county also gets money towards our bus services from the Welsh Government for every bus pass that is issued to a resident who is over sixty. Even if you do not use the buses by applying for a bus pass when you reach sixty you will be helping in a small way to support our rural bus services. My mother took great pleasure in pointing out to me that I will be entitled to a bus pass from this April and so I must get my application in soon!! Once again forms are available from Denbighshire County Council. I recently visited the county’s indoor bowls centre at Ffrith Beach near Prestatyn which is an amazing facility. If you enjoy indoor bowls (the indoor version of crown green bowling) or if you are just looking for something to do on a wet afternoon it is well worth a visit. Shoes and bowls are available for hire and food and drinks can be purchased at the venue.

Can I just confirm that we can not use the Mugger ( tarmac play area) at the school for overflow parking when we hold events in the village hall. Sadly it has not been built to a high enough specification to take the weight of cars and therefore our plans to alleviate parking problems in Tyn Llan by using the area for additional parking have been put on hold. Great news. The pot holes in Rectory Lane have been filled but the great mystery is by whom? If anyone knows please let me know so that we can thank them!! The county is not owning up to it yet. Best wishes for the Spring. Martyn

Babysitter (18 years old), willing to work day time and night time for ÂŁ5 an hour. Currently at university in London but available to work from June until September. Any enquiries please contact me on 07909223189 or email: daniel.scott.philipson@hotmail. co.uk Daniel Philipson

Nature Notes A part of my hedge has not been cut for two years and the rate of growth of some species is quite remarkable. Sycamore and Ash grew six and a half feet (2metres) in one year while Elder and Wych elm were not far behind. Hazel and Wild plum only managed four and half feet (1´4metres). I speculated as to the possible age of this hedge as it is obviously of some vintage. In 1965 Dr. Max Hooper, who worked for Nature Conservancy at Monks Wood Research Station, hypothesised that an ancient hedge could be dated by the number of species it contained. After studying over 200 hedges of known age, by their presence on ancient maps, he came up with what was to become known as Hooper's Rule. This promulgated the theory that if the number of woody species was counted in a thirty metre length of hedge and multiplied by one hundred, a fairly accurate age of the hedge could be determined. Although some questioned the validity of the concept, it has proved to be remarkably robust and serves as a useful 'thumb rule' for dating a hedge. I followed his rule and counted eleven woody species (not including things like Ivy or Honeysuckle) in thirty metres which suggests that this hedge could be 1000 years old, give or take a 100 years. The life of woody species can often be extended by judicious cutting, as is evidenced by the pollarding of trees. If this rule is as accurate as some believe then my hedge could be regarded as an 'Ancient Monument', predating such iconic monuments as Valle Crucis Abbey and Castell Dinas Bran by a couple of centuries. However, these all pale in comparison with the Yew tree in St. Dygain's Church at Llangernyw which was claimed by Dr

David Bellamy to be 4000 to 5000 years old. If true, it is a sobering thought that when 'the Romans came to Wye and up the Severn strode' this venerable tree was already 2000 years old and that it thrust its embryonic shoot through the soil when the ancient Egyptians were building Tutankhamun's tomb. Although spring is advancing there appears to be anomalies. Frogs have spawned, Newts are back in the ponds and the earliest Bumblebees are coming out of hibernation. I have only seen one species so far - the Buff-tailed Bumblebee(Bombus terrestris) but I have seen feral Honeybees active around their nest entrance in a tree burr. Yet the general impression, by comparing previous year's notes, is that ground flora is a little later than usual. Conversely, Herons have nested earlier with the first chicks hatching in late February, in a Shropshire heronry, about two weeks before they are customarily expected. At the time of writing, I have not seen any summer migrant birds or had any reported to me and I have often recorded Chiffchaffs and Sand martins by this date. Several local residents have complained about the dearth of birds in their gardens and one asked if it could be down to cat predation and whether this could be reduced if all cats were obliged to wear a collar with a bell attached. The RSPB report that cats kill about five million birds a year but claim that they do not have a significant effect on the overall bird population, as the majority would die by natural causes. They do concede, however, that a correctly fitted, quick release collar carrying a bell could reduce predation in individual gardens. John Almond ☎01352 810808
