LLANFERRES PARISH GARDENING CLUB The meeting held on Monday March 13th had Sue Griffiths as guest speaker. In her well illustrated talk "Italian Gardens" Sue spoke of the gardens she had visited in Northern Italy and near to Rome. Many of these gardens are only open on three or four days a year and then only to pre booked coach parties. The overall impressions was of their age with water features to the fore and great swathes of green trees and shrubs. The main flower present was the rose. Members enjoyed this talk about those gardens - so very different from the typical English garden. Show Secretary, Ivy Watts, has virtually all in place for the Show Schedule and a copy should be in each "News and Views". The next meeting will be on Monday April 10th when Amy Green of the North Wales Wildlife Trust will give a talk entitled "Living Landscape" based on the Rivers Alun and Chwiler. As usual new members and visitors are always welcome. Annual Subscription ÂŁ5.00 Casual Visit to one meeting ÂŁ1.00 Hon Secretary Mrs Joan Almond 01352 810808

It was suggested that a 'Tidy Up' day (10.00am - noon) be arranged for after the Easter holiday with a pub lunch to follow! It was reported that there was still a 'leaf' problem at the bottom of Tyn Llan which may cause the drains to be blocked again, should we have another bout of heavy rain. As everyone's term of office draws to an end, Cllr Holland thanked the Community Council for their support and advice during this time. Likewise, the Chairman expressed the Community Councillors thanks on the excellent support that we have received from Cllr Holland. His unfailing attendance at nearly every meeting has been much appreciated. Messy Church

March's Messy Church was about Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness. The children created a sandy desert collage with temples and animals. We made a variety of animals out of Playdoh and a Lego temple. We made chocolate nests with mini eggs looking ahead to Easter and reflecting on temptations of chocolate. We shared a lovely meal of soup and chocolate nests. The next messy church will be on 9th April at 4pm in Gwernaffield village hall looking at Easter

A note from your County Councillor After a good start to the spring I am now sitting at my desk looking at the heavy rain pounding on the window as I write this column for News and Views. The cherry blossoms are out but I just hope that we do not get any last minute snow courtesy of North America where the weather has been extreme over the last few days. It is not very often that I report sad news in this column but I would like to add my condolences to those already expressed to the family and friends of Gerald Jacob who was so tragically killed in the recent road accident at Loggerheads. All our thoughts are with the family and their friends at this very sad time. I attended the public meeting organised by the community council last Thursday to discuss what to do with the redundant telephone boxes in Tafarn Y Gelyn and Maeshafn. The community are looking to turn them into information points for visitors and possibly defibrillator sites for residents and visitors alike. If you have any ideas for their use or old pictures from those communities the Community Council would like to hear from you. The road works warning signs on the A494 took us all by surprise last week. Normally as your County Councillor I would get an advance warning of all road works in the area but as the trunk road is now managed by Flintshire this did not happen on this occasion and

so no advanced warnings from me in News and Views. I had reported the poor condition of the A494 between the 40 mph signs over twelve months ago and the DCC highways department advised at that time that they had passed my concerns on to the Trunk Roads Agency. The good news is that they have done an excellent job and the road surface is superb but we may now see an increase in the speed of some vehicles which we need to monitor. If this happens I will ask for the drive alive team to visit the area. I was asked recently about the new mast that has appeared on the side A494 opposite the Church/ pub. Apparently it is to allow the remote control of all the road side lights in the area. More good news in that the county has also resurfaced some of our pavements in Tyn Llan and in other villages such as Eryrys. They look a lot better and will provide a safer surface to walk on for residents of all ages. This morning at a well attended public meeting in Llanarmon the Wales Regional manager for BT was challenged about the poor roll out of Superfast Broad Band across the ward. There are still major concerns about the sort of service the villages of Eryrys, Graianrhyd and Tafarn Y Gelyn will receive and residents from Tafarn Y Gelyn were amongst those present at the meeting. BT have given a commitment to review the level of service to those

Local News villages and to also look into the high rate of land line problems in some areas at the same time. The regional manager has agreed to provide me with a monthly update which I will pass on to you. A number of residents in Rectory lane have responded to my article in last months News and Views about their new street lights. Many have complained that they are too bright. Denbighshire's street lights team will now revisit the area and will hopefully tone down the lamps that are proving to be a problem.

Telephone Kiosks Following a successful workshop in the Village Hall, the content of the Information to be placed in the K6 Kiosks is now determined. To enhance and introduce colour, it is planned to ask the school children to contribute their thoughts and to include some of the photographs of a bygone age for historical content. Do you have any old photographs of Tafarn-yGelyn or Maeshafn (especially the Engine House in the Quarry). If you have, these can be scanned and the originals will be returned to their owners. If you can help, please contact the Clerk to the Community Council. Contact details on page 37 of News & Views.

Finally, this will probably be my last article before the local elections in May. I would just like to say that it has been a great pleasure to work for you and with you over the last five years. Five years that seem to have flown by. Best wishes,Martyn Thank you.

Bags 2 school The next bags to school will be after the Easter holidays (4th May) ready for any seasonal spring clear out you may be having. Bags to school will collect second hand clothes, shoes, bags and soft toys. In return they give our school cash that we can use to buy vital resources for the children. We will distribute bags in April but clean bin bags are fine too if you are ready to start collecting now! Huge thanks in advance for your support. Ysgol Bro Famau Ukbags2school.com

Cottagers' Garden Improvement Society In 1865 the Gwernaffield, Llanferres, Cilcen and Nerquis Cottagers' Garden Improvement Society was formed. This formidable sounding society was arguably the precursor to later village gardening clubs or societies. Its objectives were typically Victorian - "to improve the tastes, and to encourage the habits of industry and frugality, among the labouring classes". The rules of the society excluded anybody taking part who occupied a property exceeding ÂŁ10 in annual rental. The organizing committee was composed mainly of the local gentry and clergy.

Initially most of the prizes were awarded in kind (for example seeds, tools etc.) rather than in cash. There was some criticism of this policy as it implied that the entrants could not be trusted with money and it was eventually changed. However, subsequently, when all the prizes were in cash, it was noted than one prize-winner spent twice the sum of his prize money in celebration!

After the prizes were awarded the remainder of the day was spent in dancing and games until 9 pm. A band was present throughout the day playing airs during the exhibition and dance The society held an annual show music in the evening. every summer. Initially the venue was at Gwernaffield, then at The annual shows were generally very Gwernymynydd and finally, for eight successful. Local News Local Marathon Man runs for Claire House On 23rd April Steve Clarke will be running this year’s London Marathon in support of Claire House Children’s Hospice on the Wirral. Claire House do an amazing job providing care for terminally ill children of all ages and, importantly, for their families in their time of need. Steve said: “I recently visited the Hospice and despite the circumstances it is a place of laughter and joy as well as sadness. The Hospice relies almost entirely on donations and fund raising. Last year you helped me raise £1300 for them by running the Liverpool Half Marathon and my aim this time is to raise £3000, make it round in one piece and finish ahead of the lorry that collects the cones at the end of the race!!!” You can help Steve raise money for this great cause by donating directly to the Claire House fundraising page on JustGiving - https://goo.gl/5Twwdz JustGiving sends your donation straight to Claire House Children's Hospice and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more. Steve thanks you for your support and we wish him well!
