Local News Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The meeting held on Monday March12th had as guest speaker Mr Brian Palmer, a volunteer for the 'Woodland Trust' who gave a talk about the restoration of ancient woodland. He explained that 12,000 years ago Britain was covered in woodland and over the millennia it had disappeared down to an average of only 2%, N.E. Wales still has 4.7%. Growing ancient woodland had been cleared for agriculture and for charcoal to support the Industrial Revolution. In England and Wales Ancient Woodland dated back to 1600 and has particular species growing. Brian explained how the Trust is working to remove alien trees and plants to give these, perhaps 400 year old trees, breathing space and their younger saplings room to grow. The interest in planting trees was explained, along with the Trust's policy, which is to 'CREATE, PROTECT AND RESTORE'. It has saplings for any group who plans to grow an area of amenity woodland. We ended with a short tree quiz, which was won by Hugo Watts who was given a Wild Cherry sapling to plant. Our next meeting will be on April 9th when Mr George Pilkington from 'Nurturing Nature Ltd' will speak on" Bumblebees" with information on nest boxes, ecology and pests.

Cllr Holland was happy to pursue this item. Also, the Carnival Committee would be concerned with regard to Carnival deliveries. Declarations of Interest - the Councillors were reminded that they should declare an interest at the commencement of the Meeting, or as soon as the councillor affected becomes aware that they have a personal or personal and prejudicial interest in today's business. Any member declaring an interest are required to state clearly what that interest is. Declarations of Interest - both Cllr's Isla and Ivy Watts declared an interest in Item 11 Maintenance in the Community - Maes Ysgawen. The reason given that they were close family members. With regard to the proposed New Allowances for Councillors, a letter

had been received from 'One Voice Wales' recommending that the costs be included in the Precept requirement for the coming financial year. Llanferres have not awarded any payment, due to the very high costs which would be reflected in the Precept. A letter of complaint will be forwarded to the Welsh Government, copy to One Voice Wales to highlight the planning and timing of this new regulatory item. One of the paving slabs had slipped beneath the Tafarny-Gelyn Noticeboard, making access to the Noticeboard unsafe. This has now been repaired, thanks to Cllr Almond. County Councillors Report - Cllr Holland offered the following Report prior to the Meeting. a) The County Council has now got authority from the Welsh Government to erect non- standard signs when and as required on our highways. b) I have requested an extra grit bin in Cae Derwen. c) New curbs were installed on the Cilcain road in Tafarn Y Gelyn before Christmas and patching will commence this week to resolve the pools of water on the road, which have adversely effected neighbouring properties. d) A request for dog poo bins for Maeshafn has been made, but to date I have not had a reply from county. e) We have appointed a new Chief Exec for DCC. Judith Greenhalgh will take up her role soon. I was involved in what was an extensive selection process and we all look forward to working with her. Dr Mohammed Mehmet leaves us in April after ten years as the county’s Chief Exec. He will be a hard act to follow in these difficult times.

Llanferres - Community Council
Flintshire County Council have confirmed that they will replace and move their tourist route sign in Maeshafn and the county are in the process of replacing our give way sign. I chased this issue once again. g) There was another accident on the A494 between the Llanarmon turning and the Clwyd Gate. A car took out two telegraph poles and I have asked the Trunk Road Agency via Highways to get the relevant Utility company to replace them asap. I have also asked for the cable that has been lying in the hedge on that stretch of road for some time to be removed/repaired. It is a danger to passing cars and to the hedge cutters especially if it is live!! h) At the full council meeting last week, we agreed the budgets for the coming year and due to cuts in our direct funding from the Welsh Government and the disappearance of many of their grants, council tax will rise by 4.75%. This is in part also due to the fact that we need to put more money into our social care budget for our ageing population. i) The AONB have conducted a survey to see how dark our skies are as part of our attempt to get a designated Dark Sky Status for the ANOB. The survey showed the following, Llanferres was 3.50 NELMs rating, Llandegla 5.80, Loggerheads 5.75, Llanarmon 5.40, Eryrys 5.60 and the Horseshoe Pass 6.00. The higher the score the darker the sky. Therefore, the AONB are looking to apply for Dark Sky Community Status for those areas who qualify and over a period of time full Dark Sky status for the whole of the AONB eventually.
j) Cllr Holland is also investigating sheds still in Big Covert that should have been removed. k) Finally, I have applied for white give way lines at the junction with the village road Maeshafn and the road to Fairy Glen. Llanferres Carnival - Update Mrs. Sheila Hawkes gave a report on the current position of the Carnival arrangements. Essential attractions have been booked, all good old-fashioned fun that will bring back memories for the older generation and create new ones for the youngest in the community. Children's races, tug of war, provision of a Beer Tent and Vintage Tea Room is all in the planning. With plenty of refreshments, Cllr Barton in the stocks, a Marquee with various stalls, the Parade, led by the King & Queen of the Carnival the whole day promises to be spectacular! Any remaining funds will go to the upgrading of the Village Hall. Date to book 6th May 2018. It was confirmed that all insurances were covered. Reports from Other Meetings - Cllr Barton and the Clerk attended the 'One Voice Wales' area meeting, held in Llandulas. The Police representative sent apologies for non-attendance and the majority of the meeting was taken up with discussions regarding the Councillor Allowances. Green Flag Award (Cllr Barton) - adjourned until next meeting. Photographs will be required and feedback concerning the Wildflower Meadow. Maintenance in the Community Maeshafn - the outer wall will be repaired completely by the end of the week. The Mower Shed roof has now been repaired. avenues including such things as the AONB SDF grants. 2) I have received some very positive feedback from residents on the Cilcain Road Tafarn Y Gelyn about the work undertaken to stop the pooling of water on this road. Some other residents have now contacted me about the entrances to their properties and I will see what can be done to help them. 3) New Bus Time tables will be introduced on the 11th March and I am pleased to say that we have only lost one service on the Mold Ruthin route. The service that has been discontinued is the last bus from Ruthin to Mold which apparently is very rarely used. There have been a small number of changes to bus departure times around the late mornings and the New Service provider is the MH bus company. I will be dropping off copies of the new bus timetables in the village shops and pubs as soon as they have been printed and they are already available on the relevant websites. 4) Last month I arranged a meeting between village hall committee, the school head and county officers to look at the committee's proposals for up grading the facilities in the hall. It was a constructive meeting and although funding is tight the county will help the committee to find grants etc to help fund the planned alterations. During the meeting it came to light that the hall committee and the county are insuring the building. The good news is that the committee can cancel their policy because the county will continue to pick up this cost.
5) I have already circulated the details of the meeting held on the 16th February at Loggerheads where we discussed the problems residents are encountering in Loggerheads and Cadole when there is snow on the ground. I visited the area myself last weekend and experienced the abuse from members of the public when they are challenged about parking illegally. With the chairman's permission I will give a full update at the meeting because I have further news that will improve the position in future. 6) During the Snow last weekend, the County did struggle to keep all our roads open. We did encounter extreme conditions where no sooner had the snow ploughs cleared the main roads the wind was already blowing more snow across the roads behind them. Sadly, I did receive several calls from residents who could not get out of their lanes due to the snow drifting but if the road was unadopted or private the county was unable to help. 7) The village Recreational Ground Committee are holding their annual Casino Night this Saturday and there are still tickets available. It is a black-tie event and worthy of support. 8) The Highways Dept will be confirming the road works schedule for the coming financial year next week and I will report on how this will affect our community at our April meeting. Welsh Curlews need your help! The Curlew is one of Britain’s most iconic bird species. Its distinct and evocative song is a familiar sound; a harbinger of spring that is deeply ingrained within our culture.
How can you help?
Sadly, the Curlew is under severe threat, facing an uncertain future throughout Wales and is fast becoming rare.
Secondly, we are looking for volunteers to survey areas where the birds have been recorded in the past. You don’t
Evidence suggests that since the 1990’s, Wales has lost over 80% of its breeding Curlew population. Today, there may be as few as 400 breeding pairs left in Wales and is now considered to be the most pressing bird conservation priority in the UK. It is ‘Red Listed’ on both the Welsh and UK Birds of Conservation Concern (BoCC). With the current rate of decline it is thought that, without intervention, breeding Curlews could be lost from the Welsh landscape within fifteen years. We need to act now to stop them edging towards extinction. In January this year, the Welsh Curlew Conference was held at Builth Wells. It was attended by 120 delegates across the conservation, farming, game and rural policy sectors to address the issue of reversing curlew declines in Wales through working together in partnership. From this, the North Wales Curlew Action Group was formed, and we need your help to ensure that this species has a future in our area.
Firstly, it is vital to determine where Curlews are present. We need as many records as possible to tell us where curlews are during the breeding season (between April and June). If you encounter any curlews whilst out and about, please let us know.
Image courtesy of RSPB have to be an expert birdwatcher Curlews are easy to identify and a handy fact-sheet and recording form will be available soon to make it an easy a process as possible. If you are keen to know more and to take part in this project, there will be an illustrated talk at Loggerheads Country Park on Thursday 12th April from 6.00 -7.00pm. If you require any further information, please email Vicky Knight from the Clwydian Range & Dee Valley AONB at vicky.knight@denbighshire.gov.uk

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ In last month’s article, no sooner had I mentioned all the signs of spring, we were visited by what the weather man called 'The beast from the east' with heavy snow which put spring on hold and put us back into the gloom of winter. With the exception of a few sunny days, we are still there. One of the signs of spring I've always looked forward to is the activity and calling from a rookery as nests are repaired and relationships strengthened. This starts in February and by March they usually have four to six eggs. The small rookery at the end of Maeshafn road has moved to the other side of the turning for some reason. I have counted seven nests and the birds are busy. For the first few years of our marriage, Jean and I lived on a farm in Northamptonshire. Most of the rural villages had their own rookery, either in the grounds of the vicarage or the church yard itself. Our village was no exception and a flock of rooks was always feeding in the field behind our house. This is where I witnessed a rook court on two occasions. A group of rooks had formed a circle around a very dejected character and took turns to caw their disapproval and hopped forward to peck the 'accused'. This went on for close to an hour before they all jumped in and killed it. I can only assume some serious rule of the rookery had been broken and justice was swift. As a boy growing up on the Wirral, I would cycle all over with my notebook when the Wirral was lots of individual villages. Before the urban sprawl and the Copyright © April 2018 Eddie Wilde.
M53 motorway which has made it all one mass of housing estates I would go and watch the rookeries. There was a big one in the grounds of Clatterbridge hospital also another huge rookery between Eastham and Bromborough until the monastery at Carlette Park was turned into a college. I used to move young fledglings which had fallen from their nests off the road. The A41 was widened and the trees felled. Such a shame. Among the members of the crow family the rook is the least destructive I haven't know them taking eggs and chicks of other bird species and unlike the carrion crow they leave lambs alone. But to some farmers a 'crow is a crow' and are all treated as such. More next time. Eddie Eddie Wilde 01352 810271

A note from your County Councillor Once again the snow has been falling across the ward and we have again seen every man and his dog arriving in Cadole and Loggerheads to sledge. We want people to come and enjoy the area but when it snows people seem to lose all sense of reason. They park all over the highway and verges, they park in front of peoples drives and become abusive when they are politely asked to move their cars, they actually cut the fences of the local farmers fields to gain access and they leave large amounts of rubbish behind them. After the snow in December I organised a meeting with the police, highways, NRW, Countryside Services, the Chairs of both Llanferres and Gwernymynydd Community Councils and my opposite number on Flintshire County Council. It was a successful meeting and we had agreement from the county that Forestry road would be snow ploughed asap to allow traffic to get to Moel Famau and to help residents at the same time. NRW agreed to open and clear their car parks and leave the barriers up to give greater access for all concerned and Countryside Services agreed to do the same at Loggerheads. More importantly the county agreed to go away and look at the way we enforce the no parking policy. All present acknowledged that in the long term the only way to resolve this issue was to issue parking tickets and fines. I visited the area after the recent snow falls and encountered abuse when I took pictures of the volume of cars
parked on the A494 and when I tried to explain that they were parking illegally and causing a traffic hazard. The good news is that the county has now reorganised the enforcement team and some officers will be based in Denbigh rather than just Rhyl and Llangollen. Each week the weather forecast will be checked in advance and two enforcement officers will be sent to our area to ticket offending vehicles when and as required. Let us see how this works!! During the snow I received a number of requests for help to clear snow from local roads. With the combination of very fine snow and high winds, drifting snow was a major problem and no sooner had a road been cleared than it was blocked again. Sadly the county were unable to help those residents who live on unadopted or private roads but in many cases local farmers came to the rescue and can I thank everyone who acted as a good neighbour during the bad weather. In Llanarmon Yn Ial the Community came together to get a bride to the church on time and the bride and her bridesmaids all wore matching green wellies!! New bus timetables have been introduced as from the 11th March. We have only lost one service namely the last bus from Ruthin to Mold but there have been some minor changes to the late morning services and we have a new provider M&H. I was sorry to see that Stage Coach did not win the tender this time because they were reliable and friendly but I hope that M&H will step up to the mark. All new time tables are

A note from your County Councillor available on line and at county hall. I have also delivered a supply to the Community Shops in the ward and if you let me know I will gladly drop one off for you if you require a paper copy. We all thought that local government reorganisation had gone away but the new Welsh Assembly Local Government Minister has raised the spectre again and councils are already being pressurised into completing joint Local Development Plans. DCC has objected to this proposal but sadly like most things coming out of Welsh Government it looks as if this will be forced upon us. I attended the village Casino night which was a very enjoyable evening and very well supported. I hope that is was also a financial success and I would like to pass on my thanks to the organising committee for all their hard work. Finally, I would like to thank everyone for their kind words of support after my mother fell and broke her hip last week.
She is the proud owner of a new hip but it will take some time get back to normal. My apologies for the delay in responding to recent e-mails but as you can imagine I have been spending some time travelling back and to to hospital.
Best wishes, Martyn

Colomendy Cave There are a number of natural caves in our area that have been found to contain prehistoric remains. Probably the best known are Colomendy Cave in the Loggerheads Country Park, Maeshafn and Orchid Caves in Big Covert and Lynx Cave on Bryn Alyn. In August 1975 two members of the North Wales Caving Club examined Colomendy Cave and discovered a collection of bones and teeth. They ceased operations and consulted Melvyn Davies of the then Nature Conservancy Council who had had considerable experience in cave archaeology. As the discovered material proved to be of human origin Melvyn, with helpers, conducted a systematic excavation of the cave. All the material removed from the cave was sieved to ensure nothing would be missed. Apart from animal bones they discovered the remains of two humans. One curious feature being that all the long human bones were broken at the middle, and sometimes near one end. Presumably this was a result of some form of pre-interment ritual. A further excavation took place in 1976 which yielded further animal bones and the remains of a third human skeleton. During the final excavation in 1977 a Neolithic leaf-shaped flint arrowhead was found. It had been partially broken and had also been in a fire. No more excavations took place at that time. The entrance mound outside the cave entrance was left untouched for later archaeologists. In October 2015 Richard Hankinson of the Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust conducted an evaluation excavation at the cave. This was part of a wider programme of re-visiting known caves of
archaeological interest in north Wales. Two small trenches were dug. One inside the cave and the other in the undisturbed platform outside the cave mouth. Finds included animal and human bones, a shard of pottery and twentieth century rubbish. The human bones were dated using the carbon 14 method to about 2900-3100 BC. This date is not too dissimilar to that of finds in Orchid Cave. Colomendy Cave is about 3m in length but there is evidence that it was originally closer to 5m: the entrance had been quarried away, probably in the nineteenth or twentieth centuries as there is further evidence of quarrying nearby. It appears that the cave entrance had originally been walled off to protect the burials as the wall is still in situ. This is unusual as such a feature would normally have been removed by explorers to gain access to the cave. Its survival is no doubt a result of the quarrying activity.
